If you were to ask anyone to explain the benefits of owning a Nintendo Switch, we'd argue most would demonstrate the console's ability to 'switch' between handheld and docked play. It's the entire selling point of the system after all, and having a console be so versatile can only be a good thing, right?
Wrong – well, according to Wedbush Securities' Michael Pachter, anyway. Yes, one of the gaming industry's most high profile analysts has said that Nintendo should scrap the original version of the Switch entirely, and instead focus only on the handheld-only Switch Lite.
In an interview with GamingBolt, Pachter says, "I don’t really understand the whole hybrid concept... I don’t think most people play it in both modes, I would say that maybe 20% of Switch owners play both modes; and I think most Switch owners play it handheld only. So I honestly don’t understand the whole point of the hybrid. Who cares? Play it as a handheld."
Things get a little more interesting:
"And Nintendo isn’t that smart," he continues, "so you never know what they will do next, but I think the smart thing would be to get rid of the Switch console and only have the Switch Lite, get rid of the docking station, get rid of playing on the TV; maybe offer a Fire Stick style dongle for those who do want to play it on the TV."
So, Nintendo should get rid of a console that's breaking sales records left, right and centre, and release a Fire Stick instead? Hmm.
We'll let you mull that thought over in the comments.

Has Pachter ever been right about anything?
Oh, he's still around? First I've heard of him in a while. Hopefully the last.
Pachter summarized in one image: 🤡
I think he's completely wrong.
I remember that there was a research from Nintendo showing how the gamers were using their Switch and the pie graph was pretty much 50/50.
I am on the camp that uses it both ways and to think that Nintendo should ignore the hybrid concept is ludicrous.
Why do News-Sites still report about Pachter, this man only talks BS
Also " I would say that maybe 20% of Switch owners play both modes", yeah that would still be ~12,4mio Switch owners
Oh Pachter, never change.
So this dude ran out of money again and needs to make moronic statements to get attention.
Nothing new here. Analyst my ass.
When I play by myself, it's handheld, but multiplayer needs the big screen!
Pachter's job is to be wrong, as a leading example of what not to do.
.... Well that’s a hot take. I’m even tempted to say this man is wrong. But hey...
Nintendo fans like to claim Pachter is always wrong whenever he says something negative about Nintendo, and conveniently ignore all the times he's been right, but this statement is a real head-scratcher.
Out of the 2 years using my switch I think Iv used handheld 3/4 times I like using the telly and a controller .
Stop giving Pachter the attention he craves.
Crap! Now I’m commenting and NintendoLife are gonna think articles are popular and so they should give him more exposure for clicks and so forth.
Anyways, he’s always saying controversial things for controversy’s sake. He’s got his head up his own ass and I don’t care if he is right or wrong on any issue, he doesn’t deserve the platform after what he said following Iwata’s passing.
You can prove anything with facts you just made up. I learned that from politics.
I doubt only 20% use it as both, and even if that is true, that’s ignoring people who only play docked.
I play it as a handheld about 25% of the time, so that’d be a no, sir.
"get rid of the docking station, get rid of playing on the TV; maybe offer a Fire Stick style dongle for those who do want to play it on the TV"
So... he basicaly just sed get rid of a feture then sed to bring it back.. ok... though to be fair if the switch lite could dock I think it would beat the original switch with ease.
Also tbh if it was done via a "amazon fire" stile stick.. i have doubts itd be anny good itd probably have letancy and then you know ppl like him would come out and say the same bs he has sed hear "ohh nintendos dumb thay suld just get rid of it" ... ugh...
My switch never leaves the dock. I like my games on a big screen so i can see what the hell I'm doing. Besides it just looks better. This guy is the very definition of a douche.
This is who the managers at EA listen to. This why everything has moved to loot boxes and subpar short games with endless dlc.
So many nintendo experiences require a large screen.
I remember watching his videos on Game Trailers website and thinking he was a moron. Always hates to see Nintendo do well, must really irritate him that they are at the top of the market now.
This is nonsense. Being hybrid constitutes the magic of the Switch. I was never interested in Switch Lite.
Man, he's getting dumber in his old age.
Erm, this defeats the object of the name "SWITCH", still think it shouldn't be called switch lite.
Im quite happy playing both modes! I prefer docked but when someone else needs the tv I Switch!
I have a Switch Lite but only because I dont get much TV time. Either the kids are on it playing a game or watching TV since this pandemic started. Otherwise I would use the tv far more.
Oh him again. Quite a while the last time he showed up as news. Anyway doesn't he know that we're still not at a point where we can stream high amounts of data especially hi-res games wirelessly at an efficient rate and without any issues like slowdowns and latency? The very reason for the slow adoption of Miracast. Heck even Chomecast is riddled with issues.
Also, 4G, WiFi and even bluetooth eats your batteries HARD! What more when streaming games!
It's not the same as with the GamePad and Wii U console or even as simple as a wireless controller and console/PC. Not even the likes of Stadia.
Cool. I play docked 100% of the time, and I don't think it's just me.
I've said it in the Wii U era:
DO NOT POST about Pachter. He doesn't know anything about:
1. Nintendo
2. Gaming
3. Games.
4. Gamers.
5. Nintendo.
He has a credibility of absolute 0. Don't give him a podium.
And yes, I play mostly handheld, but I 100% disagree with this idiot. The Switch's strength is that you have a choice how to play. If you want to play handheld? You can. Want to play tabletop? You can. Want to play on the big TV? You can! Want to play with friends at home where everyone has their own screen? You can. Or want to sit around the TV and play on a single screen? You can.
No idea who this guy is, but he's not the first to have this "hot" take. Let me tell you though, I absolutely do use both modes consistently all the time. I'd say I use my Switch about 50% docked 50% handheld. People who say there's no benefits clearly don't lead incredibly busy lives or have children.
The Switch is just a super convenient system. If I want to play on the TV, I can. If I'm playing an inappropriate/violent game and my son is around, I can take it out of the dock and continue playing. If I need to stop briefly to attend to something else or play with my kid, I can just hit the sleep button and then get back into the game seamlessly later. If my son or wife want to watch TV, I can continue handheld. When they're done, I can stick it back in the dock and play on the TV. If I'm going out somewhere and want to play on the go, I just hit the sleep button and wack it in my bag.
The Switch is awesome.
Also, surely if they went a 'Fire Stick TV' route, that would involve streaming and therefore would reduce performance and increase latency?
I play docked 90% of the time.
But what I don't get is, if people have a choice of product, why would you get rid of one of them unless it stops selling?
Yeah, because absolutely no one plays multiplayer Smash on a tv, right?
How does Prachter still have a job when, to my knowledge, his analysis is always wrong, and he has never made a single correct prediction? Wish I had a boss who would accept a near 100% failure rate and still sign my paychecks.
Pachter is like the Trump of the gaming world. Always wrong and always embarrassing.
Do Nintendo still share the stats around playing Handheld vs Docked? I remember they shared it quite frequently earlier in Switch lifecycle and it was relatively even. The launch of Lite will obviously skew things significantly too.
I play 95% of the time in handheld, but that's almost entirely due to fitting gaming into my life - which means limited availability of TV for docked play. However, that 5% of docked play is hugely valued by me, especially on games that hugely benefit from it - BotW springs to mind, and certainly for the sequel.
So yea, the stats undoubtedly will show handheld dominating, but that's doesnt mean anything in isolation... docked play is a huge part of Switch and they need to keep both elements.
It's impressive how poorly thought through this is. Even if it was true that the audience plays exclusively in either mode, having the ability to develop games for two distinct audiences with a single SKU makes a tonne of business-sense.
If his premise was "most people play on the TV, the handheld mode is holding the main audience back", he'd almost have more of a point. This way round, he's just attacking a value-add for a supposed "handheld-first" audience (you know, an audience that has purchased tens of millions of copies of famously horrible on a TV games like, err... Mario Kart 8?)
Funny thing is, making a single version of the console that ships without a dock, and selling that dock separately does actually make sense as an eventual way of selling this system. But he sure arrives at that conclusion after a whole lot of nonsense.
What a muppet, quite why anybody gives this clown the time of day is anyone's guess as this just makes him look dumber than we all thought he was
@fafonio He's more an anal cyst than analyst.
I am 95% handheld 5% docked but I still would want docked to stay
This guy's an idiot.
O look, a worthless, clueless "analyst" who does nothing useful but talk crap about stuff he has no idea about.
I am usually about 50-50 TV-handheld but given that I have been working from home for the past 7 months I have been on TV exclusively apart from Mahjong in 51 Worldwide Games as that's impossible to get 3 stars with an analogue stick.
Regarding his "firestick" remark, I guess he doesn't realize that the dock does more than simply allow connectivity to your TV but also allows the Switch to operate with increased power for improved visuals and performance.
He says "I don’t think most people play it in both modes, I would say that maybe 20% of Switch owners play both modes; and I think most Switch owners play it handheld only. "
"I think" ?? Wow, great professional analysis, he "thinks" huh? If at least he had some numbers or a study to support that claim. The Lite does not offer more performance in handheld mode and yet the regular model still sells more worldwide. Why does he think that is? That this is because people want a docked mode they won't use? What a moron. He just blurts out stuff without even analysing the facts.
For the record I play my Switch docked more than handheld but it's about 65% docked and 35% handheld, I do enjoy being able to keep playing on the go, or some types of games I prefer to play handheld and others I'd rather play them on a large screen with a good controller with large sticks.
The hybrid design is the single most genius concept that suits my current gaming lifestyle to the T. Most of the time its in docked mode but when the time calls for handheld and/or tabletop mode it's for a reason and I couldn't be happier.
How this dude got front page attention with that nonsense is beyond me. Is there no reviews of anything that can be published instead I mean every week there's games that release. I'm hoping Nintendo Life reviews 9 Monkeys of Shaolin cause I'm super curious on their take. Some say it's awesome and others are meh. I dug the demo!
The product is breaking all kinds of sales records and he thinks Nintendo should go back to the drawing board? I'll bet they buy bread in loves in his house, rather than sliced.
Pachter isn't that smart. I only play my Switch in docked mode so Nintendo would miss out on my hard-earned dosh.
I like Pachter, a registered bafoon, saying others aren’t smart.
A pure handheld would have flopped, the hybrid nature catered to two very different audiences. It is literally the USP. In a way, it brought the concept of a handheld back from the brink because it was not JUST a handheld.
Don’t know this guy, but sounds like a clown to me...
@RudyC3 Yeah, the point when a so-called analyst is quoting oddly specific figures or percentages, without citation, and says "I think" or "I assume" a lot, you know they are full of ****.
Just today a student of mine warned another student against buying the Switch lite because you can't get a new joycon if an analog stick starts to drift.
Also, I really like Labo.
So while I do mostly play my Switch in handheld mode, I would definitely NOT consider a Switch lite to be an adequate substitute.
Please say sike
Needs a good patching
Michael Pachter isn't that smart.
An analyst who uses "I think" as much as that, probably hasn't really analyzed much.
I'd say I play 80% docked between the two docks I have. 20% undocked is animal crossing, pokemon and like mario 35 while tvs on something else and a small bit of that is times I travel using my lite.
So hes wrong for me. Nintendo got to sell me a switch, a lite and a second dock.(I probably dont need all that tbh but like its handy)
I probably only play handheld 10% of the time, and all the other switch owners I know IRL do, too.
No clue what the heck this guy is talking about.
Don't know who this is and not buying the nintendo isn't smart thing but I would like to see the dock disappear and nintendo focusing on cross saves between systems. When I want to play on a real screen I either use my PC or Xbox.
So to summarize:
Nintendo should scrap being able to play on the tv, make it a handheld, but then offer a dongle to play on the tv??
Pachter: "I don't understand the whole hybrid concept. Nintendo aren't that smart."
Nintendo: can't respond now, too busy selling 60 million Switches as fast as they can manufacture them.
This comment of Pachter is ludicrous.
The main appeal of the switch in my opinion is the all in one package you're getting. The ultimate form of a gaming console. Play however you want, wherever you want.
Sometimes you want it handheld for single player. Sometimes you want a big screen for multiplayer or for stuff like shooters. Sometimes you want to play it on the couch, sometimes on your bed, sometimes on the go.
A lot of that stuff can't be done when only having a Lite.
I do play in handheld mode about 90% of the time as it’s much more comfortable to me than sitting in front of the TV. But the other 10% is when I’m playing couch co-op and those are some of the best gaming experiences I’ve had. Very thankful the Switch lets me enjoy games both ways thank you very much and happy to spend a bit more for the docking station. What does it matter anyways, there’s a Switch Lite for those that want just handheld gaming.
Pachter? I hardly knew 'er!
Patcher is so dispensable that I have a Lite and I believe that this is nonsense. Every Switch, even without a dock, should be able to connect to the TV with a cable.
Stop reporting on what this guy says!! He has been so blatantly wrong in the past its literally a miracle that he still has a job. I'm sure hes a great dude who loves his family, but his opinions on video games are not worth writing about at the point
I’ve said it before and I will say it again, give me a light with a cable that goes into the tv and I would be very happy. Joycon can be bought if wished.
Considering how bad the drift has gotten on my left joycon, playing the Switch docked with my pro controller is the only practical way for me to play. Needless to say, I vehemently disagree with this guy.
While I do see them adding a tv only option eventually, as people switch to the switch, I do not think that this guy is accurate in terms of people playing it on the tv. You can tell that the whole “fire stick” lingo indicates how he believes one business model works for all
When looking at the commenta above this one, I think we all agree:
“Pachter isn’t that smart”
Hard disagree. I play 80 percent docked. Itd great for multi-player and whenever I want to play games on my pretty TV screen with a pro controller. I can't imagine playing the switch handheld for more than an hour.
I want the exact opposite, I want a higher powered switch console... The handheld doesn't bother me that much
The stock handheld controllers are awful though and I’m not talking about drift, they make my hands cramp. Bought a 3rd party set (horripad) and it’s night and day
I reckon this bloke gets paid by websites like this one to talk bs, I cannot believe anybody else would pay him.
WRONG!!!!! THIS GUY IS CRAZY... THE HYBRID IDEA WAS BRILLIANT!!!
He just genuinely doesn't understand Nintendo. For him (as for the top execs at companies like EA and much of the gaming press), Nintendo doesn't fit neatly into their schema of understanding of how the games industry works/how they would personally like it to work.
We all have our blind spots but his is so big that he shouldn't be earning a career analysing the industry. It's that simple.
Then again - good luck to him and good luck to the investors that follow his advice. Spread the wealth guys - hope you're not investing my pension fund!
NL is feeding the troll.
As someone who still takes their 3ds out of the house, the guy is so wrong
"I don’t really understand the whole hybrid concept..."
Laughable! As an so called "analyst" he should do his homework first before talking about things he doesn't understand.
I can't believe this guy gets paid
yikes what an idiot. Has he never taken a car ride as a passenger? went to a friend's house? Doctors office? waiting room for any appointment really. It goes on and on and wow look at that u have console quality games if u want instead of candy crush. plus on the idea of going to a friend's house I love putting my switch on their TV dock to share something then take it back. it's just brilliant. The opposite of this dude. Though I did get a good laugh out of him!
Nintendo released stats saying that there was roughly an even spread of handheld/TV only/both play styles. I think handheld just out edged TV only by a couple percent.
So he might understand the concept (it's really not that hard) but he is wrong in this instance.
(I'd say the 80+ people arguing about Pachter for the millionth time aren't very smart either)
@Volmun
"Also tbh if it was done via a "amazon fire" stile stick.. i have doubts itd be anny good itd probably have letancy and then you know ppl like him would come out and say the same bs he has sed hear "ohh nintendos dumb thay suld just get rid of it" ... ugh... "
It could work. Aside from a pretty poor range I had no problems with playing games on the WiiU Gamepad. A Switch with a dongle would be the same in reverse. The only differences would be that it would have to stream in 1080p (or at least 720p) instead of the Gamepad's 480p, but that shouldn't be a problem with modern Wifi standards. It would probably need new hardware however, I think the WiiU had a dedicated WiFi chip just for the Gamepad connection.
That said, I think his whole reasoning is stupid. Nintendo would gain almost nothing from focusing on a handheld and as others have said, even if his estimate of "20% use the Switch in docked mode" was correct (which I highly doubt) that still would alienate a big part of the customer base.
I don't remember the last time I played in handheld mode. Bad opinion, whoever this guy is.
I don't know who Patcher is but that's not how this works.
That's stupidly hilarious.
Way to cause some hate
.... also i go between my tv and handheld all the god damm time. Stuff dongles. This guy should no better.. complete lack of respect for nintendo.. and lact of respect for consumers and people in general.
In my previous married life, I played my Switch 90% of the time handheld mainly because the wife hogged the tv with all her mindless tv programmes... Now I am free, single, and living on my own, my Switch is 90% in the dock 10% handheld when travelling about or even if I fancy a quick game on my lunch break.
This was the point of the Switch, to give you more time and more ways to play. How does someone actually become a well known analyst based on absolute bull?
This fool thought Nintendo should exit the hardware biz altogether and put all their IP on mobile...
The appeal of the Switch is to have different ways to play, even if u barely use tabletop or one of the other two.
This guy clearly lives alone. When playing local multiplayer on Switch, docked is infinitely preferable to table-top. Handheld is convenient, but big-screen is always the way to go when others aren't using the TV.
Last night i started playing Mario Sunshine on the TV, then my flat mate comes home and wanted to watch Netflix, so I picked the switch up and continued playing on the couch. This was the same in the Wii U era and I have got so used to being able to do this so seamlessly that I honestly don't know how I would cope without it!!! Patcher is sooo wrong (at least in my experience)!!!
Oh this guy again. I think someone needs to explain to him the purpose behind the Nintendo Switch. While they're at it, they need to remind him that the Switch prints money. What could Nintendo possibly know about running a successful business anyway?
Come on, even a broken clock is right twice a day... Shut up or be right for once. Or at the very least be wrong and still say something meaningful.
Remember, everyone, this is the guy who said that Netflix would go under while Blockbuster Video would live on, only for the opposite to happen.
Patcher isn't that smart
click-bait as usual very slow news day
Atleast Nintendo is smart enough not to taket advice from that Guy. What exactly would be the difference between dock station with ac adapter and a stream box and an ac adapter, except that it would make gaming on the tv a lot more complicated?
"I don’t think most people play it in both modes"... well, I only play this way, but who am I... this was not rhetorical, really who am I? Where am I? Heeeeeeelp!
Why do you guys even report on anything Pachter says?
Why is it newsworthy what that quack has to say?
Yes! I'm not interested to play on TV,only handled for me.
I guess I'm the "20%" who plays it in both docked and handheld modes. And besides, docked is way better for local multiplayer which Nintendo is the last major company to still offer a genuine delivery of.
Analysts since the switch was announced: "I don't get it.".
Millions of people buying it: "We do!".
People been being sceptic of the switch since the reveal and it's proven time and time again Nintendo is doing good by listening to it's own ideas instead of the analysts.
Isn’t the OG switch still outselling the Lite? This guy is a clown either way though.
False. If I could dock my switch lite, that'd be cool. So more dock options. Not less. Especially since there are plenty of games that stay on the switch and therefore can't be played on a regular switch (animal crossing, etc)
Does this guy even play games? I'm 36, and have a wife and career, and the switches versatility is literally the key selling point for me. If my wife wants the TV, I have handheld mode, if she's reading, I use the TV. I play it on my lunch break, or on the bus (before I started working from home), and my nephew uses the TV while I play handheld when I visit and we play smash multiplayer. At night I have one of those snaking phone clips attached to my headboard so I can lie flat in bed and play using my 8bitdo controller while I wait to get sleepy. I don't have kids, but I imagine the versatility is even more useful for people who do... Nintendo absolutely makes some baffling decisions, but a docking handheld was not one of them.
I bet this guy thinks that Legend if Zelda Breath of the Wild was terrible too. In both cases, he would be wrong. In my house as well as everyone I know that owns a switch, docked is the normal play mode while handheld is used when the TV is in use.
Yeah, this guy probably needs to retire. I think the industry has passed him by. In lockdown, the duel modes helped us watch what we wanted to and play what we wanted to. Plus, if it is so dumb and ridiculous, why has xCloud for Microsoft become such a big deal?
Nintendo is smart enough to not do what Patcher says because Patcher doesn't have clue.
Bold opinions for sure, but personally I play my Switch docked 80% of the time, at least. Handheld is a wonderful option to have, though.
"I don’t really understand the whole hybrid concept..."
Then really he shouldn't be commenting on it. I'm sure this guy just trolls Nintendo & it's fans for exposure & to insite debate.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
What an idiot
"I don’t really understand (...)"
Yup. That's Pachter alright.
Guy sounds like an ass clown 🤷♂️
I have nothing to add that hasn't already been said. This guy is an ID 10 T.
Four switches all docked to 1080p monitors. Maybe 10% play portable
And that way, the Switch's entire appeal would go down the drain, with all the third-party ports by specialists such as Panic Button, Saber Interactive and Feral Interactive and the like being suddenly out of reach because "it's only a handheld".
No thanks Pachter, your wishes for Nintendo to go third-party can wait.
Pachter needs a swirley.
who the f is pachter why have you brought this loser into my life?
Words fail me. I can't even be bothered to rant.
He is a sick man.
"I would say that maybe 20% of Switch owners play both modes"
Nintendo literally released their own stats saying about 50% use it in both modes and another 20% use it primarily docked.
Pachter is a bloody idiot and his advice is highly overrated.
He's been championing the idea of Nintendo strictly going portable only for a while now-- He sees no value in Nintendo continuing to do the "connect console to TV" business so that part is left to Sony and Microsoft strictly. Some people would agree, but I'm not one of them. To each their own.
Pachter, shut up, get a haircut and find a real job
I LOVE playing on the TV... but in my house it’s often not an option and I have the luxury of playing handheld... and I love it. The Switch has been a true game changer for me, a married man with a full time job, two kids and a dog lol
i reckon i do 50/50 handheld and docked. wouldn't sacrifice either.
F**k patcher I would never change my switch for a lite version
Patcher is wrong again. If Nintendo aren't that smart how has this Switch been a real financial success? Also, with the WiiU, the one thing 90% of ppl asked me about it who never played it was if the gamepad could be taken away of the house or even just out of the room. The Switch was spot on exactly what they needed to do. Effectively the hybrid console. I play mostly handheld by a large margin but I think the option of docked, TV mode is great & what the gaming community needs. I'm a dad gamer myself.
Something people have to remember, is patcher gets PAID for his opinions on these things.
Opinions which are almost always wrong, coming from someone with zero clue.
How do I get paid to be an analyst who is always wrong?
About once a year I read something about what this guy says Nintendo should do. I can't think of a single time I've agreed with him. I wonder if he's high profile because he gets a lot of attention for his ridiculous takes. Not that he's actually "that smart".
Among other things he is totally missing the fact that Nintendo is known for being one of the last places to find a lot of local multi player games. That would totally dry up.
Even if Patcher were right (he's definitely not) and only 20% of Nintendo's sales were coming from Hybrid Switches, that's 12 million units. Why would they not want to sell 12 million units?
Since he's wrong and a lot more people do buy the hybrid. Why wouldn't Nintendo want to make an extra $100 in revenue on the product? What does it matter to them if the dock doesn't end up getting used? The only way that would make ANY SENSE is if the profit margin on the hybrid Switch was lower than the lite. May guess is it's higher.
Sorry, who? XD I play it both, docked at home handheld on bus
What a C**T!
I only play docked but it is still good to have the option. Or if I'm watching TV and I want to look at the eshop I can do that at the same time.
Nintendo needs to keep Switch branding and do Switch 2, 3 and so on in the future.
ONLY 20% use both modes? So Nintendo should screw over around 20% of their users because some out of touch analyst says so? Sounds like someone needs a new line of work.
I've only ever played my Switch as a console connected to the TV, and I frankly don't care about the portability aspect. From the first time I held it in my hands I felt it was too expensive and fragile an investment to play "on the go", anyway (and the early reports after the Switch's launch of "bent" systems caused by people apparently handling it too roughly during tense play sessions only served to reinforce that concern).
As for Pachter, he gets a lot of press but what he's suggesting would pretty much nullify the very moniker of the Switch: its name is derived from its ability to be played "on the fly" either connected to the TV or as a portable. If he wants a pure portable, he can always revisit the 3DS (and the reason Nintendo left portable gaming with that system in the first place was the advent of mobile devices, especially in Japan). His opinion and $5 will get you a low-end cup of coffee at Starbucks. He's clueless if he thinks for a second that Nintendo abandoning dedicated console gaming wouldn't be a major disaster for the entire industry and hobby.
I think they should ditch the Switch Lite.
I agree. Playing on the TV is great, but a more powerful handheld>>>>hybrid console. I almost feel like they are training us to move away from the TV for future consoles, and I am 5000% ok with that. If it weren't for drift, I would ditch my regular switch for a lite
I'm sure games like Ring Fit and Fitness Boxing are great handheld experiences.
I've done Mario Party and SSBU tabletop before 3 player....it worked I guess, certainly wasn't a great experience.
It would be nice to have a job where you’re paid to provide commentary and no matter how wrong you are and how many times, you still keep your job.
@Euler No political discussions here!
Also lol at how many people are so offended by this. As a home console, the switch is barebones and unremarkable. As a handheld, it's revolutionary
I only use in handheld, but the joycons suck. Glad they can be removed for split pad pro.
I hardly ever use handheld.
Docked is the way to go.
Lol. Typical Pachter.
‘Get rid of the dock. Use a wireless dongle instead’.
Lol. OK Pachter. If it’s OK I’ll go with what the actual engineers say though, is that OK?
What everyone has to take into consideration is his motivation , as a "analyst", is to move the stock so he makes more money for his clients. He claims his expertise so that he attracts more clients.
It is all smoke an mirrors to effect a rewrite of historical events to bolster his credibility. He is like social media for investors.
Where did this guy get his stats? I use mine docked 90% of the time.
I got the switch for nintendo games & play them on the tv, sometimes socially with family. A tv screen is a must to play socially with family & friends. Every holiday, vacation, and family visit, we play on the tv together.
Handheld is a great feature, and I know a lot of people mainly play handheld. This Patcher fella fails to see the market as a whole.... which is his job, no?
Did he even consider why it's called a SWITCH?
I think this is the first time I've read something he said that was in any way negative regarding the Switch. I usually take whatever he says as an interesting perspective, and while he seems to be an intelligent person, I disagree with him here. The main mode for me is the TV, and I would say based on sales figures of Switch versus Switch Lite that the majority of Switch owners agree.
I haven't seen this guys name mentioned in ages. I didnt know he was still relevant to the games industry. If he ever was.
I'll admit, I dont know if I ever docked my Switch even once, possibly the day I bought it, but I cant remember. Regardless, yeah I play it in handheld mode exclusively. That doesn't mean I don't appreciate the functionality of the Switch, and I genuinely want it to stay that way.
Shows what he knows. Because of joy con drift, I'm only able to play it on TV with a pro controller.
"I think most Switch owners play it handheld only."
Not "I have data that shows..." or "I know it to be true through analysis..." or anything like that, but "I think...". Yeah, OK.
Personally, I use the Switch docked most of the time. before the pandemic, I still used it docked mostly, but would take it with me whenever I had to get my car serviced, or if I was going somewhere where I'd have to do a lot of waiting. So I use both modes. What about me, Pachter, huh? What about me? Am I nothing to you? After all we've been through together, you would just throw me away like so much trash? I LOVED YOU YOU UNGRATEFUL CAD, I LOVED YOU!
Lol what a bunch of crap.
Hybrid is what i whas and still am hyped about. I hope Nintendo stays on this track (Hybrid 2 in 1)
Switch is still selling like hot cakes straight from the oven.
I disagree with him 100%. I mostly play on my TV. In fact, I'm not a fan of handheld only devices being fired to only experience the game on a small screen. I love to have the tv option. The handheld aspect is more of a bonus to me for the convenience of being able to play while on commute. If the Switch was a handheld only I would not have bought one.
I would have 1 regular and 2 lites right now, but the joy-con drift issue made me stick with the regular. Didn't want to send my whole console in every time drift popped up.
@mariomaster96
Oh that's simple- they still report on Pachter so that they can get people like you and I to get upset by the headline and leave mocking comments. They get ad revenue when we engage with their website.
Plenty of people who bought the Switch for this particular reason do understand the point. He's one person who doesn't. So why does anyone think he's qualified to judge whether it's a good idea?
This chap is clearly saying stuff, as usual, to grab headlines. The figures speak for themselves. I think the Switch sells about double the amount of the lite and just overtook the NES lifetime sales.
The strangest thing though is to call Nintendo not that smart. They've been going over 100 years, have billions in the bank and even failed products generate profit (ok not the virtual boy). I wonder what he thinks about all those companies and products which lose money hand over fist before failing under crippling debt. Maybe he really means they are unpredictable and can actually read the market much better than he can over a long term period.
This Pachter is a moron. Me and everyone in my house hold play the switch directly on the TV, even when we have friends and family around, and everyone I've ever known that has a switch does the same. I may play my switch portable time to time, but that's only if the TV is being used for a movie, show, or ps4. And as soon as its bout to go flat, it's back to the TV to play. If Nintendo ever went full portable device, can certainly say I'd never buy their gaming console again. And I've played Nintendo since the original one. Hate this guy and I've only just heard of him. Can say if he created a gaming console. It would never take off, clearly has no sense or understanding of what people want.
@AstroTheGamosian
While Pachter is normally wrong that view was a common one at one point.
Espically once Netflix switched to their current streaming service
Me and my friends that own the switch system use both modes depending if we use multiplayer or single player games we switch between handheld and TV, to say something so uneducated that 20% of players use both is extremely sad. Out of the 7 main people I game with we all use both. So how is it only 20% (1 out of 5) only use both? Right here your article is displaying incorrect information.
Don't believe everything you read online this individual who made this article should think before they post I see no information on surveys done to prove his point. ✅
What a moron.
I really pray that Nintendo sticks with the hybrid model moving forward for a Loooooooong time.
It has revolutionized how I play video games and increased my spending MANY-fold.
The convenience is massive.
This guy has no idea.
The switch/hybrid console is great because it gives you OPTIONS. how he can't understand that is completely baffling. what a tool.
Yeah that's not even close for my house- we play 90% of the time docked.
Hybrid is one of the best of Nintendo's innovations ever.
@TimboSlice me too. I'm going to be so happy/relieved when/if we eventually get a "Switch 2" and it's just more of the same but with added power. It's all I want. I love the hybrid concept so much.
Ah, yes, replace the Switch with a Switch, just worse in setup because it's smaller and less elegant.
The Switch is such a perfect system as is for me - it is the perfect size in handheld for me to not feel cramped, nor too big (hence why I don't want a Lite), it caters to all sorts of experiences - I like playing singleplayer in handheld but TV multiplayer is amazing. This guy continues to be a laughingstock, but since his stuff never amounts to anything...keep the laughs comin', Pachter.
I ain’t got no interest in handheld only.
I'm sure he's been right about something at some point, but I wish I could remember when.
What an absurd thing to say!!!
Majority of my gaming is done on my Switch and I'd say about 90% of it occurs on my tv!
Often playing games like Doom 2 or Borderlands with my wife!!
AND
It's where I watch majority of shows on Hulu!
Will you shut up man?
If they had a LITE back in March 2017, I would have gotten that and saved $100.
If have time to play on my TV, my PC/PS always wins out right now
They should expand cross save with PC like Witcher 3. Let people keep a true Home experience but still play on the GO with cloud saves
I probably play mine mostly handheld but come on. I still enjoy playing on the TV when I can and multiplayer games need a TV and detachable controllers. Plus, clearly people still be the regular Switch even though the Switch lite has been out for a year, I think the regular Switch is still out selling the Switch lite.
Plus don't give Nintendo any ideas right now. "Introducing the new Switch Pro, you can get this or the regular Switch at stores until March 31."
Has this dude EVER been right about anything Nintendo? I like putting my Switch in the dock and getting upgrade visuals on most of my games. I play it both ways. Its the damn reason it's called a 'Switch'. I mean... what the hell, dude🙄
Wow, this guy really has no idea what he's talking about. There is no reason that changing between handheld and console is a metric that he should be making up statistics for. What he's not thinking about is that the switch fills 2 very different markets, handheld and console, and is incredibly successful in both of them. Not only that, but financially it's less expensive to market and produce 1 console than 2. The switch lite may seem to break that idea, but in fact it only exists because of the switch. The only reason the switch lite can exist and be successful is as a cheaper alternative to the switch. This is the first time I've ever seen this guy, and even still I can tell he is just trying to make a dumb hot take.
How?
The Switch has just been the highest selling console in a record breaking number of consecutive months.
I get Sony and Microsoft are so predictable that it basically does his job for him. But he's always so off the money with Nintendo.
Seems obvious that person is stupid. So what if the Switch is played in handheld or TV mode? Nintendo isn't that stupid. They're not competing with anyone. They've been innovative for years.
@Splinky I guess
Yes, I use my switch more in handheld then docked. However, the fact that I can play it both ways means it’s my #1 played console for almost 3 years and I don’t even see a reason for my ps4 or x1 other then the 2 games I have played in them each over last 3 years. I don’t even bother with ps+ anymore. And my x1 is starting to feel that way too.
Uhh.. pretty sure it's the other way around. I never use the handheld mode except for when I'm taking a crap, multitasking, or at work for my breaks. 85-90% of the time I'm playing docked because it looks better, feels better and sounds better with my home theater system.
In fact. I think that's why the lite was created. A lot of people I know dont even want the lite but had to get it due to the shortage a couple months back.
Thanks guys, i needed to be more pissed at work...
Shut up, Pachter. You're a clueless idiot and no one likes you.
There aren't enough facepalm gifs in the world for how dumb this is. The hybrid feature is a HUGE part of why Switch is hands down my favorite console. There are games I love on my PS4, but even when I'm playing them I'm lamenting that they're not available on the Switch. Being able to play on my TV at home, and them grab my Switch to bring with me and continue THE SAME GAME when I'm away from home is freaking amazing.
What a crap take lol if I had only wanted use the switch as a handheld I would have bought the lite. Having the options is the best part.
Also, I don't know that I have ever been on an article's comment section and seen so much agreement. His idiocy truly united the community.
This is crazy talk. Sure people have different opinions about things but this makes no sense.
When switches were difficult to get in the beginning of summer I found a switch lite and picked it up. I was at least able to play the new Nintendo games. But there were a couple problems with the lite vs switch. I am older so even though it's not hugely bigger the switch had a bigger screen than the lite. So that made it easier for me to play mobile. Another issue is I am primarily a pc gamer so I like my games on a screen. The screen size of my biggest problem with the lite but the next most important thing is I am a streamer and steam my game play on twitch and that can only be done with the switch itself. So I use both modes plus steam it. I know the last item doesn't pertain to most people but it is another reason the switch is better than the lite. Also as I said about screen size already. There are a lot of us gamers that are getting older and our eye sight is getting worse and the slightly bigger screen makes a big difference and if it's still not big enough I can throw it on my 32" monitor and see it.
Why would Nintendo even consider eliminating the switch, with it being one of the best selling Nintendo consoles
Does anyone take this moron seriously? He is clearly saying stuff to grab headlines
Getting rid of docked play would just turn the Switch Lite into a Stadia that plays Nintendo games basically. He literally is just suggesting Nintendo should enter Cloud based gaming, and from their terrible online service, we know they are years and years away from anything like that. Taking away docked play would remove all of the casual family gamers that Nintendo picked up from the Wii era.
As someone who plays the Switch daily and probably 70% on a TV, all I can say is don’t let some white collar investor who doesn’t own a single video game give you advice.
After all of these years how does this guy still have clients??? He has been wrong about Nintendo every time. I am so tired of this clown.
He is so far off base is not even funny. I play at least 90% on tv dock. Looks so much better on the 92" screen.
In fact I okay so much in the dock that my switch has warped and the screen buldges a bit because of the battery. 😬😬😬😬😬
Nintendo really really needs to do a switch pro that has much better engineering and build quality.
Wow this dude is a idiot i wouldnt get a switch light if my life depended on it. I love my switch though but the switch light is also a lot weaker than the switch and cant even play every game with it i dont think
@Rob3008 Did you mean Biden? Okay, that makes more sense. I mean, we all know that Biden gets caught in way more lies than Trump.
Thise commits are absolutely savege you all saying what I thnk bout him to now if you exuse me I going to grab some pop corn and continue watching you guys rost him
Utter bullcrap. This guy should direct his ignorant analysis elsewhere and stop harassing Nintendo.
@KillerBOB So everyone but you on here is an idiot. Cool man, thanks for the great input.
Why does Pachter get everything wrong how has he still got a job.
I only really us the switch on the TV
I don't really use it as a handheld.
The millions of Ring Fit owners would disagree. Moron.
Thanks a lot Nintendolife. I could have gone the rest of my life without hearing this clown's name again and you went and ruined it.
Don’t feed the troll. The guy makes a living on saying stupid things and getting clicks. Force him back under the bridge.
Don't know who this Pachter person is but he should mind his own dang business. I play on the TV a lot and I like the simple design of the dock.
My Switch stays docked roughly 95% of the time. So does my brother's and my niece's. I wonder how Pachter plays his Switch.
Patcher is a dipsh*t. The end.
The only thing I can add is that everytime I say I wish my switch had a pro version because it looks like crap on my 4k tv there are a bunch of nintendo defenders here who tell me to use myswitch for portable play because not being tethered to a tv is better anyway and to buy a playstation if I want to game on tv. Goood to see so much dock support here but I wager it's partially because no one likes this analyst.
Lol what an idiot. Why get rid of a feature that literally only adds to the console...
"I think..." that says everything. The Switch sold more than the Switch Lite and most of the Switch Owners play their Switch docked and I, personally, had never so much fun playing videogames, just because I can play the same games everywhere I want AND at home on my kickass big Television!
Nintendo should focus more on bigger and better Joycons, a 4K Solution and Folders!!
I play exclusively on the TV, and I even own a switch lite. In the rare event that I’ll take THAT Particular device and use it, it’ll be handheld.
I feel like the worst part of the switch lite is it’s inability to connect to a tv at all 😅
Pachter is a fool
As somebody who literally only plays in handheld mode, this is moronic.
Who hires these people to interview idiots? Nintendo has been The top of the food chain forever, for one, and bandwagon haters always have the most idiotic things to say. Pachter clearly is an imbicile. What would make you think most people dont play in both modes? Handheld players biggest wet dream is to be able to put games on the tv, and honestly many games are better suited for tv. Please stop forcing the opinions of ***** idiots into the world interviewing obvious fools.
The main draw of docked mode is local multiplayer.
I play my switch in mostly docked mode, am I strange ?.
It's why I love it as I can play on tv then switch to handheld when my partner wants to watch his programs. Some times I play in bed but mostly docked.
Here's an idea for an article. Times he was actually right in a prediction.
Considering how well the Switch is selling, I find Patchter's assessment dumb. People obviously like the hybrid concept, as the original model seems to sell better than the lite. Personally, I play about 50/50 between docked and handheld. I also enjoy playing tabletop with a pro controller. The versatility and convenience of the Switch, along with it's expansive library, are exactly what makes it so popular. No matter the lifestyle, the Switch accommodates.
Don’t E V E R listen to Pachter.
I think pachter isn't very smart!!! Saying to get rid of something that's selling like crazy!! Who is this guy and where does he come up with such a stupid idea?
@Dr_Corndog That's because he's only wrong about nintendo, like you and most bandwagon haters. I 100% bet when MS and Sony show us their imitation, you just like this fool will turn your arguments around, as usual. If your only defense for calling someone on obvious ***** is to call them a fanboy, you make yourself look foolish. My proof is in the numbers. There cannot possibly be that many people just 'being a fanboy', nintendo makes its money for a reason. The proof of pachter being wrong is in the product itself.
@Buckyooliver I’m the opposite, but that’s the beauty of the “Switch”.
@sixrings You would lose that wager. I would wager that your 4k tv is more a trophy than media for gaming though.
I’m sure I read an article somewhere that said Pachter was less accurate than random chance with his predictions. I can’t remember were otherwise I would provide a link 😂
"Herp, derp. I don't personally understand who plays it as a console, therefore it's a feature that nobody wants and utilizes, because logic."
I play mostly docked and then whenever I’m on public transportation (slightly less these days) I use handheld. So if it weren’t for covid I’d do both quite a bit.
@Antidummy isn't 4k standard in all new TVs now? Quite affordable these days at that. Who would view their TV having the feature of 4k as a trophy at this point?
@eltomo
Yeah I think that is how must of us are. Handheld mode is fine for playing most single-player on the couch while someone is watching a show on the TV. But then docked-mode is a virtual must for playing multiplayer Mario Kart, Smash, etc. Does the Switch Lite even have the little kick-stand on the back for standing it up and playing multiplayer on it?
He actually thinks Nintendo should take away the feature that makes the Switch unique and along with BotW launched it into becoming a huge success hahaha. Wow. If you wanted to compile a list of the dumbbest things Nintendo could do, this would absolutely take the number 1 spot.
How does this guy get paid to talk about videogames? Especially Nintendo? He consistently shows a clear lack of understanding about the company, its games, and the way it operates. He's wrong 90% of the time. I don't understand how he's in the position he's in.
This is clown shizz, he doesn’t understand how Nintendo works
Oh look Pachter is being contraversial again, Yt subs must of dropped.
@Robzilla Personally I prefer to give all 8 players a single joycon and huddle around a screen the size of an apple. We stay warm that way.
Looks like Pachter wants to give that Japanese analyst who claims that the PS5 will sell 300+ million units some competition for the worst possible take.
He's back. Oh man. I kinda miss his stupid predictions.
This one is a bad one too. Like, even going with his point, he says Nintendo should get rid of the hybrid concept by discontinuing the base model and then afterwards sell an accessory to make the Switch lite a hybrid again. Why?
I haven't heard of this guy, but clearly he's off his rocker. What would Nintendo gain in abandoning TV mode and going all-in on the Switch Lite? Is he aware local multiplayer is still a thing? That Nintendo has some of the best local multiplayer games?
I love my switch, i play it more than my PS4 or X1 most of the time, because of its Hybrid nature, it's one of the most awesome features anyone could think of, imo. I'd be tempted to buy a Switch Lite IF it COULD dock, but strict handheld? I'll pass, i got my N3DSXL for that. Would have made more sense if the Lite could dock and just make an optional bundle pack with a dock (that both S and SL could fit on and a Pro Controller for like, idk $85, i think that would have made them a significant amount of extra revenue.
@JSDude1 100%
First, why are we back to all the NL sites regurgitating anything Patcher? I mean, seriously?
Second: In his own words, even though it's a ridiculous low-ball figure, even if we give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he's right, that "only 20%" uses the hybrid functionality. Is his actual suggestion to therefore, by his own numbers, abandon 20% of the product's market?! His professional opinion as an analyst is that abandoning 20% of your market is a smart plan?!?
20% play in docked mode, right? I don't know, maybe, show us evidence. But, 20% of what? Those with a dock able Switch, I guess, or maybe be he is including the Switch Lite owners as well, who can't dock so they don't. But they make up a lot of the 80%.
A lot of Switch Lites are selling, but a lot of young gamers don't play much past the first game. So the Lites take a back seat to the smartphones Xboxes and tablets.
For me it’s probably:
Docked 90%
Portable 10%
(Or maybe 85/15)
Everyone I know with a switch plays 50/50 both ways, that analyst is an idiot
What he gets for thinking. Too bad he's too up his own ass to realize he's wrong. I play, and a great many people do prefer playing on a much larger tv. The fact that it CAN be played portably is just a bonus.
I only play Switch in handheld mode. Switch replaced my Vita. I play PS4 and One on a 4K TV
Ha ha! Looser. I play both ways almost every day.
Pachter is an idiot and he always be one.
Why does this douchebag still had a job? If Nintendo ain't smart they wouldn't be in business for this long and the hybrid feature of the Switch is its best feature. Getting rid of that is like getting rid of the DVD feature of the PS2 or backwards compatibility of the Game Boy Advance, it just wouldn't make any sense as those features are bonus compatibility that came with the system.
Pachter is basically Nester from the old Nintendo Power comic strips. He’s an ass and he’s always doing it wrong.
I would say I play about 50/50 and this is a must for me.
What a bad analyst that can't read the market. Go home, you're drunk hehe
If we had seen the Lite massively overtake the sales, then maybe he could be somewhat right...but I didn't see those numbers.
A fantastically selfish and personalised take.
This may suit HIM, and a subsect of Switch users, but it is not remotely true of a huge number of the player base.
Keeping Switch as it is does no harm to his exclusive taste of the device (new model or current) why on EARTH would you want to remove the use on a television just because you don't use it.
I'd love to know what leap of logic made him think this. I suspect there's some ulterior motive involved. Perhaps it confuses his statistics which he had neatly seperated into handheld and settop devices 🤣
What an ignorant jerk.
What an idiot. I only ever play docked. Think I'm gonna have a smash bros party at my place with us all huddling around one small screen? Got to be the stupidest thing I've ever heard.
@Kienda What did he say about Iwata?
I'm sorry, but this guy has consistently seconds that he's a moron. He might know the financials, but he certainly doesn't know the industry and these opinions are clearly not in touch with the 66m+ switch owners
Theses people know we won't let this happen..
That’s right Pachy; use a “dongle” so that there is latency between the console lying somewhere and the TV. That’s what gamers want.
Prat.
Actually think’ll I’ll just refer to him as Pratchter from now on since he seems to to love portraying himself as one.
sounds like an idiot to me
Imagine taking anything he says seriously.
Umm... I hardly ever play in handheld mode.
Why is anyone still reporting on this guy? He's just a talking head who is, every time I see him open his mouth, wrong. And he's wrong now. I am pretty sure I speak for every Nintendo fan when I say this dude couldn't be more wrong if he said grass is purple with magenta highlights.
@Matdredalia who we talking about??
Wrong. The Switch has been the best selling console in the US for 22 straight months because people love options, and Nintendo games. I bought my first Switch when ACNH released and I could only get a Switch Lite. I love the Switch Lite, and definitely find it easier to play in handheld mode (and it will probably be my commuting Switch), but I really wanted to play on my TV. I'm an Xbox person, so I wanted the console experience and wanted to play with friends on the TV. When I was finally able to get an actual Switch I was thrilled. That Switch mostly stays docked. I loved having both so much that I bought a 3rd Switch (!) that I use mostly in the bedroom but also dock to the TV from time to time. I play different games on different Switches. Nintendo's hybrid model is so successful that I bought 3 of their consoles in one year! I think they're rockin' it!
@ryan_craddock stop reporting this idiot's opinions.
It's clear not even you, as in NL, trust him (and why should you), so why make a fool of yourselves and offer him space, time and effort?
Oh right, because people will come in droves to insult the old, out of touch man.
What amazing integrity, it's clear you only report worthy stuff 👍🏻
I don't know what makes me more sick: this man's incredible streak of BS, or the fact that despite that outlets like NL still see fit to give his opinions weight.
@Rob3008 You just had to go and mention politics huh?
Seriously have you seen anything Biden has said or done in the last year or are you just along for the ride on the TDS train like every other brain dead liberal?
Biden can barely speak a sentence without tripping over himself and saying something completely ridiculous and stupid.
Enjoy 4 more years of whining crying and complaining about Trump everywhere you go everyday of your life, TDS must be very depressing.
Imagine not being able to resist thinking about someone you apparently don’t like, he’s living inside your head rent free. 🤦♂️🤷♂️😂
Oh dear this really shows he’s not a gamer himself coming out with crap like that.
Cancel Patcher
I have an OG Switch and I play it like 75% in docked mode. So this would be stupid for me. The fact that I can play switch handheld is a convenience to me. If needed, I could always just pick it up and play handheld while traveling. Not have to carry a massive PS5 or Xbox one power brick across locations, is awesome. An awesome convenience. Now they could stop selling the $299 OG Switch and bring in a $199 dock only model with a resolution upscaler. But ALL games have to be compatibility with all 3 versions, Nintendo DS style.
This guy is wrong. The versatility of the console being hybrid was a way to play safe and appease the large portion of home console users. Even if it may be primarily used at the end of the day mainly in hand-held mode, the niche of it being dockable was a selling point of its own, whether or not they end up using it.
No, seriously: how is this guy still relevant in 2020? He's been a hack of an analyst for years that only ever gets brought up when he baits Nintendo fans.
I'm not surprised he would say that, he isn't in touch with gamers I would say. I do play in handheld a lot, but I also really like playing on my TV or projector. I have a ton of co-op games that would never work without the dock.
"Maybe offer a fire stick solution to play it on a TV"
Soo...kinda like the docking station then? Just with more strain on the system and dependency on its battery life?
And without the Switch's modular controller that made games like, say, Okami HD such a joy to play since it combines the basic pad controls of the PS2 original, the motion controls of the Wii version and new touch screen controls, offering something for everyone?
Man, Pachter is a genius! If only more companies would take his advice!
I mean, if you simply do the exact opposite of what he "analyzed", you'd pretty much be golden.
How is this bloke still relevant in any way?
Release A FIRE STICK how much was Amazon paying that schmuck to say that! The whole point of having a switch for both portable and home use is to make more money targeting both markets. Do they know why people use it in portable mode more? People have lives outside of their home. Maybe they fly and like to game. Maybe they're on bus like me.
It’s funny how people who act like this think they’re smarter than a multi-million dollar video games company.
The headline should have been: Man admits to never getting off the toilet due to ingenuity of handheld video game console: "Just keep it portable!"
Known Gobshite talks crap. Next.
I created this account just to say that I've never heard of this guy before but this is the dumbest crap I've ever heard. If this is the kind of "news" you report then in definitely gonna unfollow. But who knows. Maybe today was just a REALLY slow day for nintendo news.
If anything they should ditch the switch lite and make a switch XL with more power that can play at higher resolutions and/or frame rates.
He has been wrong since the Wii days and people keep quoting him.
why on earth people keep quoting him? and worst of all, PAYING HIM?!
Oh Hell what if the person can’t see on the tiny screen and never uses handheld mode??? You Patcher need F*** off!! I bet you never bought/played a switch so you shouldn’t post s*** about it
Let's review Pachter's bold predictions:
So I think it is safe to say the man's accuracy mark is well below the analyst Mendoza Line.
Can you smell it?
Someone burped.
@tourjeff Research 🙄 I think console mode is good for Nintendo only gamers who only use switch and like to use it is a home console.
Nearly everyone I know uses it as a handheld, but I think it is a good feature to keep.
However Pachter is right about wireless - Nintendo showed 0ms latency on Wii U gamepad so imagine using Switch as the Wii U gamepad now that would be something.
"Nintendo Isn't That Smart": Pachter Says
This is all that is needed to say whom is the douche....here. And never worked in anything Innovative.
It's almost like making bold claims and proclamations based on anecdotal evidence/personal experience rather than an abundance of factual evidence to the contrary is a bad idea.
However, I do think Nintendo would benefit from releasing a "fire stick" type of device for travel. I have a third-party travel dock that I absolutely love because it's so small and convenient. And for those players that like to bring their Switch on the road for multiplayer, it's a hassle to bring the huge official dock/power brick combo.
I love the switch for both docked and handheld. That's why it's great. Considering the lack of power, it's clear the versatility is it's strength. Furthermore, there seems to be an age bias in this article assuming handheld use is more important.
I don't even own switch but why am i this mad ...
Analyst my ass, he just randomly pull off that 20% number. Also ..
"I honestly don't understand the whole point of hybrid. Who cares? Play it as a handheld."
WHO THE F*** ARE YOU TELLING PEOPLE WHAT TO DO?!?!?
I think this guy clearly says things that make absolutely no sense so he gets people talking about him. Comment sections on articles with his name on them have dozens or hundreds of people expressing how wrong he is...but this guy knows what he's doing. Nintendo would never follow his inane suggestions, lest they go bankrupt. But that's not the point. The point is he makes headlines.
People really need to stop giving him attention.
Nintendo is worth $62 billion as of this moment. Nintendo routinely has the most cash savings of any Japanese company. But they’re not that smart?! My god, what an insane and stupid statement. This man will never understand the Switch.
@Dualmask his article should've been blacklisted before print.
How is this guy so high profiled? I have never heard him say anything that's become true.
The last official numbers from Nintendo showed it was fairly equal, and there's zero evidence the situation has changed. In fact, with the Switch Lite now available, chances are the number of hybrid units being used only as a portable system has decreased.
@Justifier well hopefully he changes or goes into hiding... someone exile him lol
Like that’s ever gonna happen. Imagine if they did this lol
It would go from 3 years ago where the whole idea was portability but also running it in the toaster to getting rid of the entire toaster and making it 3ds but big
This interview already says it all. He has no **(^^ clue and where is he pulling that number from? Most likely where the sun doesn't sunshine is what that is. Getting his 20min of fame and this will follow him for the rest of his douche life and people will never let him get away from it. Remember in the day and age of Internet what you say or do stays forever somewhere to be found.
As a newbie, I've already found the use of the dock easier than having to go struggle to plug in a dongle on the fly.
It was actually the selling point over the Lite especially since I get two controllers instead of just one device with the Lite
I play 90% docked because my tv is beautiful and I'm not into a tiny image on screen unless im in bed or riding public transit. So this man is incredibly ignorant.
What a fudge pachter.
Pachter strikes again, eh? AKA the analyst who is almost never right. Yawn.
@Zeldafan79 yep. Switch handheld is locked to 720p while docked is 1080
@Daniel36
'I think' I noticed that trend also. Wonder if he own's either system. The dig at Iwata....just wow. Also, no idea who he is or why I would care about his opinion anyway.
He says "Play it as a handheld." People do that. Turns out you've been able to do that since 2017. Plus, you get the option to easily play it on the TV in a way it was meant to do.
@CharizardEmperor It depends greatly on the game but yeah, I have absolutely no intention of playing Mario Galaxy, Pikmin 3 Deluxe. Metroid Prime 4, Bayonetta 3 or BotW 2 exclusively on a handheld.
Man’s on crack.
Oh, actually a wireless HDMI connection-stick was actually how I thought they would do the TV-play, before they released Switch.
The dock is great too! Skipping wireless connection reduces lag.
Shut up, Pachter.
F him, I mostly play on TV and get in handheld when my boyfriend wants to use the TV while I`m gamin, which basically happens once in a lifetime, so yeah, I love the hybrid nature. Nintendo should keep it like that for the next generation too
@xZombieMob Biden has a stammer, well done for mocking someone with a disability. Douchebag.
@arabiansanchez hell yeah pretty games deserve a pretty display to make your eyes pop! for simpler games like indies or visual novels I think handheld is fine, but for example playing xenoblade 1 and 2 handheld makes me unhappy lol
I'm probably 90% docked playing on TV, unless I'm traveling. That's the beauty of the system
Not only is the hybrid Switch straight-up more popular than the Switch Lite, but no hybrid Switch also means no Ring Fit Adventure, which has been a massive success over the last year and has easily been Nintendo's biggest blue-ocean game since Wii Fit/Wii Fit Plus from back in 2008/2009.
Having a Switch Lite only which would also remove tabletop mode, which would cripple games such as Super Mario Party or 1-2 Switch, which have collectively sold over 14 million copies.
@tourjeff Exactly! The hybrid concept is WHY it has excelled. Pachter is a troglodyte and all of his ramblings should be dismissed as the rantings of a lunatic... period.
Oh, this guy is still going.
Nintendo is smart enough not to listen to him, at least.
@SigourneyBeaver Hah, well said!
@tourjeff and I use it almost exclusively docked. The idea that is should be handheld only (especially when considering that couch multiplayer games like smash bros and mario kart are among their best-sellers) is asinine.
This is literally the stupidest thing I’ve seen all month. First of all, if Nintendo got rid of the Switch and kept the Lite, they would lose out in sales. Most people like the Nintendo Switch because of its hybrid concept. I know that’s one of the reasons why I bought it. People find it cool. Second of all, some games like Super Mario Party can’t be played because of its undetachable joy cons. Also, I’d rather play games like that on the tv if I can. Third of all, the fire stick remote kind of thing reminds me of the Wii. Critics would slam Nintendo for not bringing up a “new” concept. This guy needs to do more research before he even thinks about publishing something.
Yes Nintendo drop the version of the switch that can play all the games for the version you can't play in table top mode or allow easy 4 players on. Definitely don't even bother to release that rumored upgrade either, yea who needs those right?
I admit this guy has been right some of the time, yet conversely has also been wrong. Just like everyone else. Nobody's perfect after all.
That said....I 100% disagree with Pachter. I don't travel much with my Switch (short commute) and often prefer playing on my TV depending on the game. I play docked about 95% of the time, but I do like the option of moving my gameplay around on the fly if needed. Hence why the Switch's concept works well for so many in this day and age.
Thats nuts. I was Nintendo loyal before the switch. I've owned every game system Nintendo has put out, except for the switch. Why? Because the switch was a dumb idea from the beginning. I have no desire to pay $300 for a game boy that you can hook up to your TV. I want a console, and if they make another I'll buy it.
"No One Plays Multiplayer" Claims Man With No Friends
Patcher isn't that smart. I never play my switch handheld. The switch lite was a horrible decision
@Joe_Schmoeless the switch is awesome, don't deprive yourself. The switch lite is idiotic
In this world there are two certainties. 1 gaming is better with doritos. And 2: there are two people you know are full of sh--:Trump and Pachter.
Let's all give a round of applause to the man who singlehandedly managed to get into that dumpsterfire of a catagory.
@Xiovanni As a mental health patient who's fought their entire life against Schizoeffective disorder I'd ask you not compare people like me to Pachter. It's an insult.
According to NL's poll most people play docked most of the time, and do switch between modes.
Hmm. Well, I play pokemon on docked mostly.
Iknow pokemon is one of the games which are fine handheld, but for some reason I prefer docked.
I'm a weird chap tho because I play games whose entire appeal is mostly online (smash, mario kart, pokken, etc) without NSO.
but I certainly like some games better on docked, like the 2d mario platformers.
So yeah, this dude is absolutely full of red hot steaming delicious bollocks.
Usually don't bother to comment but "nintendo isn't that smart"... I mean c'mon. I'm no longer traveling for work in these times, but when I was the switch was perfect for travel play and setting up in the hotel. Plenty of reasons to use it in docked mode. Just a trash take... Maybe this trash pile was written just to garner reaction....
I bought a Switch Lite because I wanted a portable device. Then I realised that I wanted to play on the big screen also so bought a Switch also. Best of both worlds as the Lite is a better device for portability.
Dont know the guy...
@hammers1man are you sorry for having 2 switches?
@Steo If the Lite sells well and people like it why is it a terrible decision. I prefer it as a handheld, the Switch itself is a little too big for comfort and portability on the go imo.
I admit that I don't follow this guy that closely, but has Patcher ever been right about anything?
Ummm no thanks! The dumbest thing I've ever heard. I play my Switch mostly docked but once in a while handheld too.
So, get rid of the dock, so there can be a Fire like dongle? What would this accomplish?
@Dr_Corndog when has he been right? Not a rhetorical question because I'd really like to know. A broken clock is also right twice a day.
@xZombieMob while I do agree it'll be a pain to see and hear Biden stutter for the next 4 years, you need to get used to the fact that he's going to win. Do you seriously see reelection chances for Trump? think about it. The man's almost 75, completely out of touch with his country's people. he's a good business man, which means as a president he leads the country to greater economic boom, but at what cost? I think america needs a very left leaning leader right about now to alleviate part of the issues that have been building up. if things have improved socially by 2024 it might be fine to elect a republican again, but not Trump who will be almost 80 and senile by then.
Is up for to debate who care who not yes? Is pactherski crystal bulb? No think so not. I trust ONLY cousin boiko
@Steo Imagine being the guy that claims to be Nintendo loyal and he didn't buy one of Nintendo's better examples of forward thinking. I jumped on the switch when they announced it, partially because I missed the Wii u and 3ds since gaming at the time wasn't a luxury I could partake in anymore.
@doctorhino
I'm not arguing about this worthless guy for the millionth time like these goofs though, just pointing out how stupid it is 🤡
Patcher has been outTrumping Trump in games forever!
Games like RE4 looks much better in handheld mode, whilst the Nintendo exclusives like Luigi look way better on the big screen. It’s all a matter of choice and for me the switch offers something truely unique and special.
I bought a Switch, and NOT a Switch Light. There's a reason for that, I'd imagine.
@hammers1man Because you're not alone.
Everyone has their opinion and options but after owning both Lite and the regular, I will never buy another Lite model, especially when $100 more, you get rumble features, bigger screen, ability to connect to the tv and more importantly, ability to replace the controls. The new Lite model I had, the controls were really cheaped out and felt like it, left stick had issues and buttons had some small delay, in some games. We all know Nintendo has had a bad generation when it comes to controls, switching to the big model, everything feels solid and on point as it should be.
The Lite model needs to be discontinued as far as I am concerned. The price tag isn't worth cheaping out as that is what you get in return.
@NintendoLife isn't that smart. They keep amplifying this idiot's nonsense.
@reporterdavid Personally I would of loved a cheaper Switch console (no screen) to accompany the Lite. Being able to seamlessly connect the 2 for game saves also. I don't regret having 2 switches as I think the Lite is a much better portable device. I never liked the DS to be honest but the PS Vita is a fantastic handheld and the Lite beats it as the best handheld ever made. Shame about the lack of Bluetooth audio as the Vita has it.
“If the next Zelda game was for mobile devices it would sell 100,000,000,000 on its first day out.”
@shani He gets paid a lot of money to give advice to people who spend lots of money on video game company stocks and shares, so what he says is newsworthy regardless of your opinion, I'm afraid.
He certainly knows a lot about the gaming industry, but he has very limited business sense. He is more like a blogger than a business opinion.
There's an entire ecosystem around people who stream games on the internet and can't do it from a device that doesn't output a video signal. On top of that there's people (such as myself) who use their device as a hybrid device and not exclusively a handheld. Believe it or not, the screen on the switch actually bothers my eyes so I very much limit the time I spend in handheld mode. There are also games for the switch that don't support handheld only... The switches entire gimmick that it's portable and usable on a home TV so the Pachter can keep his opinion to himself.
@KillerBOB Is anyone arguing for him? I just saw a crap on him fest.
That is such a weird thing to say. I don’t have the data to back it up, but from what I’ve heard from people, it seems like the vast majority either play on TV only, or switch between TV and handheld fairly often
This is the stupidest thing I have ever heard! Patcher is the one who isn't smart. I play the nintendo switch mostly on TV mode.
This guy must be a very lonely person.
Playing with people is fun... "Real" people, not just online.
@countzero I think the gamepad used Bluetooth for sending and receiving data to the WiiU?
Ither way yeah iv wanted something similar to the wiiu experience on switch for a while like a inhanced Dock or something.
I even thought itd be cool to have a WiiU/Wii Disc player Dock and use the swigch like a GamePad so we can play some of the games still stuck on the WiiU (main one for me is Xenoblade X... loved that game lol) sorry if this is a bit rambly as I'm prity tired XD
Oh so sorry gents, I was busy all day and somehow missed this one. As I stated on Twitter I have nothing but the utmost respect for Mr. Pachter. I do however feel the need to leave a strong worded reply:
That guy is a complete moron! The whole point of it being called the Switch is because it can SWITCH between docked and handheld mode! I don’t understand why Nintendo released the Lite model, so that’s the model that should be scrapped if one has to go. I like the Switch, but honestly I’m completely confused by Nintendo’s thought process this generation. They’ve always been pro-cooperative and fun, but now they have a Lite model that can’t handle coop and a stupid new subscription service that took away the fun multiplayer aspect.
I think anyone making any decisions, nevermind a multi billion dollar international corporation, based on what this dude "doesn't understand" would be a misstep.
What the hell difference does it even make to him? Do what you want, dude. People playing on the console have no impact on you anyway.
@Dr_Corndog I mean, he's not often right, and there's no direct correlation between him being wrong and it negatively impacting him. So it's not surprising people have a consistent view of him. This is a classic Pachter take: "Nintendo dumb" as they take in money.
IT sounds like he is in the dark maybe he needs to buy A SWITCHLITE, (get it?)
That Pachter guy be saying "Nintendo is not very smart" and goes on to ramble about something way more dumber than that statement itself... go Switch Lite only? How stupid and moronic of an idea is that?! What a dumbarse!
I 100% disagree with pachter. That defeats the purpose of the switch
I always play with my Switch docked. For handheld, I used my 2DSXL. The kids play Switch much more as handhelds, but I'm the one paying for it all
He is stupid, that's all
I remember Pachter said Switch will sell only 40 millions at the best
Ah yes, scrap the main selling point, and the one thing that allows the switch to call itself the most revolutionary modern console. Very smart Pachter, you big dummy
Never heard of Wedbush Securities or Michael Pachter until today. I almost exclusively play Switch on TV and so does everyone else I know, unless commuting or on vacation. The entire reason why I'd never buy a Lite is the lack of that flexibility. I think this guy isn't very much in tune with gamers at all, so I doubt they are one of gaming's top analysts, amd if they were, they won't be after this embarrassing interview.
What a fool. These "analysts" try to create the conversation to have Nintendo exit the console business. Now that Nintendo is back on top, they find a foolish reason. I LOVE docking my switch and play both regularly.
Clearly this guy has no idea what he's talking about
Patcher isn't that smart!
I'm really impressed that I guess he saw that one guy from Stadia's terrible take and went all "hold my beer" on this.
This guy sounds like a complete door knob who clearly knows NOTHING about this industry and the Switch/Switch Lite.
I love my Switch and it is my favorite console... Oh wait AND handheld in 1 device! I got sick of multiple devices and sometimes wished my gameboys/3DS could be played on my tv when not in the mood for handheld so wait for it... The Switch solves that problem you moron (Pachter).
Clearly 22 months now it's the best selling console I think is what I read recently so clearly this system Nintendo has with Switch and Switch Lite is working lol, what a dumb a**!
Nintendo may not be smart, but compared to Pachter they're brilliant beyond reason.
"Nintendo isn't that smart." Right, but I'm sure that THIS guy is an intellectual GENIUS.
Yeah, I hope this guys never runs his own business. 😂
Also, it seems like he's salty that he was completely off base with his initial Switch sales prediction(he predicted it would do less than 10M in its first year). "I don't get the hybrid concept" well that's fine, but millions of people say otherwise.
He clearly does not know what he's talking and is using numbers he's just guessing off the top of his head.
So, why would any site give this guy a headline article? May as well just stop anybody on the street and get a just as informed opinion, it would be just as much "news" as this.
"Who cares?"
Umm...20%; you JUST said that. That's a sizeable portion, equal to one fifth of this massive install base.
Anyway this guy has historically blown hot air, his predictions probably bring correct an ironic 20% of the time. (Wii U's predicted failure, and like nothing else).
You're an idiot. Nintendo is all about family play and preserving multiplayer fun on one console needs to be fought for. Your opinion sucks and you should shut up
So he's ignoring every content creator for switch games there is? Because currently most people need to hook up a capture card to the doc station to stream and record.
he still has that job huh
I've only ever played Nintendo home consoles. I don't take my switch out if the dock.
This guy is mental.
The switch is still breaking record, how stupid it would be to only keep the lite 🤦🏻. Patcher should really stop talking about nintendo.
What a moron. The Switch brings together all that was great about the Wii and the Wii-U and adds handheld portability that made the DS range so loved.
I can't physically play hand-held, so no. I play with my face on a Pro controller with remapped controls. Even if I could play hand-held I much prefer playing on the TV.
Lol he's upset that he can't afford the real switch.
Classic case of a hater thinking that their opinion is better than all the others XD
Yes and no. I’m sure Nintendo are pleased with their sales for the switch for what we hear it’s record breaking. However, in the customers favor they should have changed the dock so that it’s also an “adapter” so that you can still charge your console, use the tablet, and have gameplay on the TV as well. There are so much potential possibilities that Nintendo could have made happen but once again they deliver the bare minimum enough to please fans and the fans just eat it up like it’s steak and lobster.
So carry 2 Switch's and make 2 Switch's for everyone who wants to play on the TV and in handheld, pay $100 more too. Does that sound smart to you especially after recovering from a production shortage? The only way to dock the Switch Lite would be streaming but the encoder is choppy to save resources for devs (use video capture then use xCloud or Stadia to see what I'm talking about) and it's not compatible with more games than it is so those are games that'll never be able to be played on the TV regardless. It would take a new console generation to make an encoder on a handheld good enough to replace DisplayPort.
Even then, To avoid those two situations, Nintendo would need to exit the TV business. No big 3 console manufacturer has ever left the TV business so he thinks Nintendo is going to be the first one to do it? This is less realistic than Nintendo allowing people to lease one for $15 a month. Believe me people, Nintendo is not doing this and we really should be doing the opposite, discontinuing the Lite and only produce the original.
I made an account just to say that this man has terrible opinions
@Antidummy Looks like your cat walked across the keyboard again.
Why should Nintendo abandoned the better version of the switch. The switch lite is garbage so no thank you
@Lanmanna Pretty sure I remember him being down on the Wii U, and obviously he was right then.
@MindForged Yeah, it's not like he's always been right, either. Pretty sure he's predicted the demise of the console market several times now, though to be fair that prediction has been made every couple of years since the early 80s. My point is that Nintendo fans pile on him every time he comes up, even when he's right.
As someone who is disabled, having the traditional controller that puts both arms in front causes extreme shoulder pain for me, the handheld mode is ok-ish but i had to purchase a separate ergonomic grip case for my switch so my hands dont cramp and turn into dead spiders (yknow like when u spray a spider with a ton of lysol bc youre too afraid to get any closer then it shrivels up & its legs look like That™). Anyways, I absolutely LOVE being able to dock my switch and play with the joycons separate and relaxed on either side of me. I've never been so comfortable playing a game and was actually looking for something similar to get for my xbox so the controllers are split. I was thinking about using two controllers and mapping just the left and right sides but having the whole controller in each hand is kinda heavy. PS if any of yall know a way I can make that happen for my Xbox I will love you forever 😄😜 [description of disability: ongoing osteonecrosis, as time goes by the more I use joints, move around, the worse the necrosis gets. my right femoral head collapsed, left on the way, irregular edge of shoulder and elbow joints cause limited range of motion & prevent smooth movement. wrist/hand/fingers ache and cramp when used long & with non-ergonomic support i.e. joycons without an added grip case; just to give an example of what pain im in and hopefully tell what kind of accessible solutions would be possible for me & others like me]
I fully disagree. I purposely bought the Switch for it's switching abilities. All people I know only buy the lite due to cost and the economy but have or will go out and buy the full version asap. Patcher needs to stop talking about stuff they know nothing about.
Pachter has always been wrong. He is not an analyst he is a sooth sayer
Ugh. Patcher is such a douchebag.
He knows that when the PS5 and XboxX come out, most people will buy a Nintendo Switch, and he doesn't like it.
There are no good reasons to buy anything but a Switch when the next console generation begins. We've hit peak graphics, so there's no game you can design that can't be programmed for the Switch.
I've never heard of this loser. And he's wrong. I just got my switch 5 days ago. I probably use it more on the dock then on the handheld mode because of the bigger screen and I can play with my wife.
This is a bad take. I literally bought a regular switch over a lite so I could use both modes. I also play both modes all the time. Just because you dont understand something doesnt make it a a bad idea. I dont want a switch lite. Im sure Im not the only one.
Never mind the fact A LOT of games depend on the controllers being detached, mario party, odyssy for example and that you can't really have two people playing on one switch lite.
1) Who in the world is this guy and why does he think his opinion holds that much weight?
2) I almost exclusively play my Switch in console mode 🤪 I find playing Splatoon in handheld far too uncomfortable, and the only time i used handheld mode is when a friend is over and they want to use the tv. Giving the user options makes everyone happy, so what's the point in taking them away?
Pachter is a numbskull. Most people I know play the switch a majority in docked mode. I personally play in docked mode 99% of the time, as I'd rather kick back and play on a large screen, plus anything with local multiplayer is infinitely better docked. Who shall I believe? The random analyst who apparently did no research or the gaming giant that has brought my great games over the last 30 years?
Respectfully, no and he's an idiot.
Este analista falou muito besteira... Tudo baseado no que ele ACHA, não em dados reais.
Can’t play multiplayer on a small screen.
@TheWingedAvenger
I agree and I haven't touched my PS4 in 2 years now. I play PC and Switch and plan to stick with just PC and Nintendo now.
This analyst originally stated that the Nintendo Switch (Codename NX in development) was too expensive ($300) and not an affordable alternative to the PS4 and Xbox One. He also stated in 2015 that third-party support for the Switch did not look very promising. He also stated that the Switch would sell 5 million units by 2018. The Switch sold almost 20 million units by June 2018 and is now over 65 million units. I know that this guy’s schtick is to try and get attention in the VG Sector, but he certainly has a history of not getting it right with Nintendo but scores some impressive points with his flip-flopping.
This idiot must be living under a rock
If there's one word Pachter doesn't seem to understand, it's INNOVATION.
While being a hybrid console is the Switch's main innovation, I'm surprised there's no mention of all these other features, especially when it comes to games that are centralized around Joy Cons or Joy Con accessories, and this is only naming a few.
@Dr_Corndog Not true. I have to say, I'm a nintendo fan, and I think there are some things that they could do better. But economics do not back this up. Tons of people got the Switch, and a lot of people play on TV.
Pachter isn't that smart, as proven time and time again. Let's see...
How many times did you have some sort of prediction that was totally wrong? 🤔
@Dr_Corndog not speaking as a Nintendo fan, but I seriously would like to know what specifically he was right about (that everyone else wasn't saying a month before him) as pertaining to Nintendo. Because I really haven't heard or read a single thing and I'm not exaggerating.
@VGVESTOR Glad I'm not the only one that noticed! 🤣
So first off, as a disabled man who spends a lot of time in bed due to pain, I absolutely need my favorite form of escapism to be able to toss and turn with me. However, on my better days? Go figure, I kinda like pretending I'm normal and can play on a television. So even as a primary user of handheld, I still greatly love the option to go docked.
Secondly, the ability to play on screen greatly helps when playing with friends in person. While not impossible to play split screens in handheld, it's much less strain on the eye to do so on a television screen.
Okay, there's no fancy way to put this... This guy is a moron.
@Creamysugar honestly I think he's trying to play the whole "controversy sells" angle. He knows half the crap that comes out his mouth is just that. But he has to make headlines somehow otherwise he doesn't stay relevant and doesn't get paid. I guarantee you he flaps his gums to the editors with negative opinions so he gets us viewers to do just what we are doing while he's holding shares of Nintendo stock.
@tourjeff It wasn't quite 50/50, because they did a three way break down, but they did make an infographic showing playtime in each mode. About 30% play only in handheld/tabletop mode, about 18% play online in docked mode and about 52% play regularly in both.
Either way, your point stands. This guy is a clown and he's full of it. Even if he were completed right and only 20% of players even played in docked mode (rather than the reality of 70% playing in docked mode at least regularly), what kind of business decision would it be to alienate 20% of your customers for no reason? It's not like selling the standard Switch model is hurting people who prefer playing in handheld. It's one of the dumbest arguments I've ever seen.
As someone who plays in handheld mode 95% of the time, I've still logged quite a few hours in docked mode and I'm always glad to have it for party games like Jackbox, Mario Kart, Smash, etc and for showing off games to friends and family when they want to see some new game that I've gotten.
@Dr_Corndog That's fair.
He obviously doesn't live with a family whose members fight over time with the Switch and no we can't afford to buy multiples. Out of the five of us, two always play with it hooked to the tv; two always play with it handheld, and one bounces back and forth depending on what game she's working through. Anyway, per what seems to be the theme of this comment thread, he's clownin'.
@Dizavid Not to ruin your perfectly good joke, but his name is Pachter (Pack-ter), not Patcher. But yeah, he's a fool. And I understand completely what you mean with the disability. This guy is trying to make an argument about how taking away accessibility and options is somehow a good thing. Even if he were right about his numbers of 20% of users playing docked (he's wrong, it's 30% handheld, 18% docked, 52% both.. so 70% use docked mode), 20% is a huge amount of a playerbase anyway.
If we cut services and features because it wasn't useful to more than 20% of the population, we wouldn't have most things in this country.
@weo3subs This Pachter fellow is a known clown. Virtually everything he's ever said has been nonsense. Don't quote me on it, but I believe he's the same guy who said the Switch wouldn't even sell 5 million in its first year on the market and probably would sell less than the Wii U by the end of its life. He's completely out of touch with reality.
I refuse to explain myself to stupid people, im not the jackass whisperer
Get a clue Patcher
Looks like another old white dude commenting about things he is out of touch on. 🤷♀️
How many people here want to discontinue the Lite? so many comment here for that, I think the Lite is a great handheld, I actually prefer it to the switch in handheld mode and when I am away from my house.
why this idiot is still getting atention, if Nintendo followed every crap he said, Nintendo would have been doomed, lets get rid of Switch and only sell Switch Lite, that genius( this is a irony) getting rid of options for people to choose what play style better fit them( this is so stupid) what if i like to play more my Switch in my TV, getting rid this option, who limit person who perfer to play his Switch games( both first party and third party)
Someone tell him that he's not that smart. I for one play my Switch in docked mode exclusively. Also the switch lite has a massive problem and that is the joycon drift.
I've never heard of the guy before but I'll assume he's good at what he does, however I still disagree with him. The whole reason I even bought my Switch was because of the hybrid functionality. Some games are more comfortable to play on a screen with a regular controller. Besides, they've already developed the technology. Why would they even scrap all that? It's been the best selling console for what, 2 years straight or something? That's because the same reason why companies buy their employees laptops mainly now along with a docking station, monitors, and a keyboard/mouse. So they can have the full functionality of a desktop while still being able to take their work with them. The Switch is also big on multiplayer games with players all on the same screen. You have to have the TV docking function for that. So yeah, I disagree. Nintendo knocked it out of the park with the Switch, and they currently have full control of the hybrid gaming market. Keep it up, Nintendo.
Man this guy is an absolute moron.
I play mainly handheld but when I can I pull out my pro controller and fire up my dock. This guy doesn't have a clue.
Of course they're not going to do this. It would require them to to fix the Joycons.
I mean their Wouldn't Even be a Nintendo switch Lite If the Nintendo switch didn't exist don't hate on me I like both Nintendo switch and Nintendo switch lite .But I think handheld is more boring though because I liked the Nintendo switch better because you get to play it on your TV than handheld who wants to play handheld when you can play it on your TV
Why would the people (me included) who want to play both modes want some stupid Fire dougle!? NINTENDO ISN'T STUPID! THEY WORK HARD TO GIVE US ENTERTAINMENT. Nintendo definitely shouldn't listen to you, and I hope they don't listen to you Mr.PaChTeR.
This is the dumbest article ever. I literally never play it as a hand held. What about multiplayer. Dumb
@Dr_Corndog thing is... This man has been on the room and gloom train for nintendo sice the wii u came out, making comments that 'nintendo should go third party' and things of that nature. He makes sensationalist comments because they draw the gaming media's attention and boy do they eat it up. I forgot about the guy till I saw this article pop up. Honestly a focus on handheld only may not be a bad option for nintendo but to ignore the people who want to play docked is kinda lame to be honest. I play more in docked than I do in handheld lately because I am playing divinity original sin 2, handheld isn't the best for that game imo.
I play mostly on the tv and play handheld when other people want to use the telly. So eff off with that rubbish Pachter.
This just in: "Pachter wrong about absolutely everything ever."
In other news: "The sky is blue."
That was and is hands down the DUMBEST THING I'VE EVER HEARD. I pray the industry leaders don't actually listen to this guy cause I love taking BOTW with me wherever I go don't get me wrong but when I'm home it's running on my TV with a pro controller same with every other AAA or first party title. Now for some reason Diablo and castlevania games I love playing handheld but that's about it.
I'm the guy who leave it docked all the time. Like to see those Nintendo games in all their glory on big screen the art work really shines.
No comment 🤦🏻♂️ This is dumb. Like. Was he joking? Is he trying to say no point as a console Bc it’s Lesser than the others?
I totally disagree with him! My switch has been docked since the say it launched- if It didn’t have the TV docking option i would lose interest in the switch quickly! I have no need for the portable feature yet. The hybrid ability of the Switch is partly what makes it hugely successful!
Who the hell is Patcher and why is he such an idiot? I use my switch handheld and docked.
I had to make a profile just to comment on this BS of an opinion article.
The reason the switch is selling so well is because it is a hybrid console. I play mostly docked, but I LOVE the fact that I can take it on road trips, to long days at work or when campus opens up again. Good job drumming up controversial points I guess.
He is arrogant to think that he speaks on the behalf of all switch users. His comment is absurd and looks like it was done out of malice to try to get a reaction out of switch users. I use my Tv screen more than my gamepad screen and this is why his reponse is wrong. He should scrap his false ideas and his ego and let us switch users speak for ourselves.
@Reprise your statics of how you play your Switch is exactly the statics Nintendo showed in they financial breefing in 2017, and no a Fire Stick solution Micheal Patcher is genius, why not offer the same quality when you dock your Switch to play in your TV, in fact using a Fire Stick solution for that will only make more curbosome to play on TV
@PhilKenSebben he was always dumber, become old man dont change that
That's why there's a switch lite
I think this is so stupid it has some of the best sales me as an adult and others I know love that it can be connected to the tv I wouldn't play a lot of the games if I couldn't ... But say my 10yr old sister yes she would play it hand held but also would love to be able to connect it to the tv. This just seems like he is trying to screw them over so something else can get more sales.. . If the PSP could be plugged in to a tv I'm sure a few people would have scrapped the consoles to be able to play it on the tv and portable. Myself went out looking for only the Nintendo switch that could be connected to the tv I didn't want the light version.
@NEStalgia that lie that only 20% of Switch user play in both modes, Nintendo showed in 2017, a static that stated 50-70% of Switch users play in both mode.
I so disagree with this. Oh man. I usually only play my switch docked. It would really suck to be forced to play games at 740p or sub 1080p. I really dislike the joycons so being forced to use them would only be a detriment for me. I don't think this is something that can be quantified with a loose percentage score. The switch works because it is a hybrid console, it's what got people to buy it. Even if you only use one or the other it's still cool that you have that choice.
There seems to be no intelligence in Pachter. The original is perfect. We play it handheld so we can take it anywhere and on the TV so people can see and not crowd each other because of a small TV. Also some people have wired controllers that can only work on the TV.
@NotTelevision he is wrong. Period
if you analysis the Switch weekly sales( specially in japan) you gonna notice Switch outsell Switch Lite, most of the coment here show how Switch is a amazing console and can fit perfectly in anyone lifestyle, lets get rid of this aspect( i am a genius) and make Nintendo bleed money now( i am a genius again) i get the impresion everything Micheal Patcher make this stupid statement he want his wet dream of Nintendo becoming a third party like Sega or follow that same path of Microsoft and Sony( why we need a hybrid console that stupid, please ditch this)im glad Nintendo dont follow his advice or ortwise bye bye Nintendo( is that you want Patcher).
Why on earth would I want to play BoTW on anything except my giant screen? Sure, I use it as a handheld playing games like tetris, and sometimes Animal Crossing, but some games you just don't play handheld if it can be helped.
@Giancarlothomaz You know that, and I know that, but apparently this six figure analyst didn't know that. But even if we choose to trust his brilliant deduction that it's 20%, his suggestion to therefore abandon that market while directly starting it's 20% of the products market still proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that this guy isn't merely bad at the video games business, he's simply bad at business entirely...
Pachter has always been a moron. He's wrong on so many things, so it's easy to ignore. I had no idea the headline was from him or i wouldn't have wasted my time clicking...
See I want a switch pro that can amp up the power to deliver 4K gaming and I want it to be a traditional console without the battery or built in screen.
Then I want a switch go that has cloud sync with the pro version for when I take my games on the road.
@Crockin I have a Lite and have never had drifting issues. I have had it for about 8 months now and have had no drifting issues. Finally picked up a regular Switch with the cute Animal Crossing characters on it (the special edition) and it’s hasn’t even been a month yet and the joy cons I bought as spares are messing up. Actually it’s barely been 2 weeks. And they were drifting new out of the box... I would go with the Lite because I don’t think drifting is as common...
Patcher doesn't even mention anything about those that only play it docked on a TV... do they not exist according to him?
Not only is he telling Nintendo to get rid of the Switch, he's also telling Nintendo to get rid of Super Mario Party because that game CANNOT be played on a Switch Lite because it can only be played using one joy-con... also what if you want to play with your friend who doesn't have a Switch Lite? The Switch allows for multiplayer on the same console... the Switch Lite doesn't...
@BooJoh nope
A lamppost has a higher IQ than patcher, what a stupidly ignorant thing to say. And the fire dongle is completely contradictory to what his saying further reinforcing my belief that he's one of the dumbest entity's this world has unfortunately produced
Then, if we got rid of the Switch, would the Switch Lite be called a Nintablet?
I don't know where the "only 20% play it in both modes" comes from lol but I trust Nintendo to do their research before making such a drastic decision. I LOVE playing Pokemon Shield on the tv more than handheld mode. I'd honestly like to see Xbox and PS make something so convenient/versatile lol it's nice being able to play both modes.
That would be awful, very rarely play in handheld mode.
He predicted the Vita would outsell the 3DS; FALSE.
He predicted the Switch would flop upon release: FALSE.
He's dead wrong on this topic hands down, you cannot take this clown seriously. The whole point and the reason why the Switch exists is because you can swap from your TV to a handheld whenever you want. Super convenient, no hassles, perfect for on the go gaming. You also have to consider that certain games are focused on the Joy Con controls that it is required in order to play them. Super Mario Party is one of them.
Also, would you really want to play multiplayer games like Smash and Mario Kart on a dinky screen, huddled together with your friends? Wouldn't you rather do that on a TV screen? You're willing to tell Nintendo to stop their innovation and focus ona simple minded aspect like a bland tablet handheld?
Pachter, do you see how stupid you sound?
Never ceases to amaze me this dude is paid to provide worse analysis than what your average gamer community rando could offer.
Nintendo has provided data on Switch usage stats. It'd take maybe two minutes of research for Pachter to educate himself on roughly what percentage of Switch owners play games on the TV, which is well north of 20%.
The hybrid approach allows them to maintain their iron grip on the handheld gaming scene while also being competitive with PS4/Xbox One. But sure, it'd be smarter for Nintendo to drop out of the home console scene entirely and only offer a less popular and less expensive piece of hardware because Pachter has trouble understanding the appeal of a hybrid system.
What a dummy.
I don't use the switch in handheld mode. I have a switch because I'm forced to because of certain games I want to play. If I am home, I rather play on a big screen, not a tiny one.
@Gvaz noone forced you to buy a switch.... you bought one because it has games you like on it..... wtf
This guy is a complete joke, who employed him to be an analyst!!!
I used mostly handheld, but my kid uses it mostly docked. This guy is a turd.
I love that it’s hybrid! I have a dock for the living room tv and a dock for the bedroom tv, which is absolutely awesome to have & I play it handheld if I’m out for the day with work or if we go on holiday (obviously that doesn’t happen anymore).
I don’t see the point in the Switch lite personally but I guess it suits some people. The hybrid thing is the best idea Nintendo ever had!
This guys out of touch with the market.
@Kienda Wait, what’d he say about Iwata? I didn’t know about that.. anyway, this guy doesn’t seem to know anything.
I'll say this – I love my Switch Lite so much that it upsets me immensely that Nintendo didn't make docking an option through an option 'special' cable.
It didn't NEED to be 'dedicated for handheld play only'. It just seemed cruel not to make it optional to buy a 'dock' later.
So for now I keep an old full Switch around for the 25% of the time I want to go docked. Nintendo wins then on selling me two Switches but loses from the point of view of making their users lose a bit more faith in them as a good and decent company.
I literally love playing it on TV. It's to play games like smash and mario kart on the big screen with friends and family and I like Animal Crossing and all the Zelda games on switch on big screen. I enjoy the BIGNESS while at home. It's more fulfilling. I almost never play it handheld at home. And that goes for every person I know as well. We play it handheld on the go. And if we wanna play smash. We use the console already connected to the TV.
Gaming just feels better on bigger.
This is the biggest crappie opinion I've ever heard.... Most people use it as a handheld only and 20% on TV? On what info does he base this?? Self-made facts of Lollypop land?
I am assuming this fellow is one of the performatively stupid media "personalities" so beloved in the USA of late. The classic example is Jim Cramer:
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/8-dumbest-things-we-heard-this-decade-bear-stearns-is-fine/
After the gratuitous insult against Iwata very shortly after the latter's passing, I think this Pachter fellow's "abrasive, bellowing idiot" routine is plain to see. Hopefully November will begin the process of moving these agents of decay out of the spotlight.
And we should take his word? I love the Switch as it is. People would have loved it more if it weren't for the drifting joycons. The Switch has its own thing. It's hybrid. In can be played handheld and on the big screen. THAT'S ITS THING. This Pachter guy should pach off.
Didn't I tell you people... this Switch Lite will be the new 3DS in disquise. Told you all before. They were testing waters and now making believe Lite is the newest and doesn't even have a dockstation... it means it kinda forces to play this as a handheld hardware. Even a 5 year old could've predicted this. You're all blinded. Nintendo will eventually scrap that Dock thing and only handheld hardware. You just watch
@ArcaneShadow Gaming should be played on bigger screens. You will never ever capture the same experience as on smaller screens. Its watching a dot moving on a screen. It's not the same
I know it's the infamously ever-wrong about Nintendo Pachter, but the logic seems flawed even for him. Nintendo currently cater to two audiences and are doing really well, this isn't smart they should just drop one of those audiences and then they would do better? Hard to see how they would do better just jettisoning a chunk of their customers that are super happy with and paying for what they're selling. Good job Nintendo don't rely on people like him and go their own way.
@CrazyFrog6 What's not true? I said Pachter is wrong here.
I partially agree. Nintendo should release a most powerful Switch without screen to save money to make it competitive against ps5 and new xbox, and a dedicated portable console, a new revision of the lite. But scraping the console side of the switch all together would be stupid.
I’ve never liked Pachter but I think this is the most outrageously clueless thing he’s ever said.
One of the selling points of the switch is that it was the first console nintendo has made in years, yes the switch lite can go anywhere but some of us actually enjoy having the console feature more and buy it for the console feature that's why when this year he consoles were selling for over 500 when nintendo MSRP is only 300 and switch lite wasn't and it never makes sense to stop making your biggest selling item , it actually makes more sense to make and update with more of them, Nintendo bring on the consoles
I think they should just do it better. Get the iPad Air 2020 performance in a new Switch Pro. The reason the Switch is a bad hybrid device is because the home console portion isn't fast enough.
I do think selling a Switch box with a pro controller is a good idea also. More options are fine. The Lite didn't wreck the original Switch.
More Power and a cheaper Box version also.
Thus guy is such a clown
@sanderev yeah. they might as well report on some other anaylst or stop altogether.
I mean I am not an anaylst, but I probably know more about what he is talking about than he does.
1. Nintendo should keep the hybrid model for their next system.
2. Offer a Pro version either in 2021 or 2022.
3. Nintendo should never listen to Patchter (luckily it seems like they don't even know he exists)
xD
Patchter is just a ***** who happens to get clicks, because news sites like MNN and NL are stupid enough to report on him. This article is just one example of NL being greedy (wanting clicks even though this ain't news)
I don't know if I've ever heard an intelligent thought from Pachter
90% play on TV docked. But happy for those 10% of times where I can continue in handheld.
Pachter says he doesn't understand how great that is. But that just goes to show you shouldn't talk about something "you don't understand" and then decide someone "aren't smart" for having a different view.
So what If only 20% uses it docked? Atleast we have a choice
Ah yes, I love playing a good game of just dance handheld... And 1, 2 switch
@Fazd,
Which is what people sometimes fail to see, the fact you can play in handheld if you want to, you may never use the feature, and vice versa if you prefer handheld gaming, but the choice is a huge selling point imho.
Well...he's not wrong.
Sorry, my talk to text misheard me. Kindly replace 'not' with 'always'. Thank you.
We own 3 switches at my house we ONLY PLAY DOCKED what the heck are you talking about if there was no dock we would own zero switches. We are adults we have no urge to play in the backseat of a car or on the way to school. In fact I wish they would sell a docked only version for 200 we have absolutely zero interest in handheld in my house . I'd love to save 100 bucks and not pay for the screen
The 20% is an assumption on his half. If he had actual data then I think it would be a valid statement.
Can we get rid of patcher's flatulences spammed as news? Thanks 👍
The man is an idiot. Stealing a living.
Another “commentator” and member of the gaming community who clearly doesn’t understand the appeal many of us have not just for the switch but Nintendo - same as commentators that claim a game isn’t Nintendo friendly or Nintendo will be bust in a year. These idiots need to pipe down and stay in their own lane. Not that they should have a lane in this industry.
@Nerdlabs001 what?!?!? Adults don’t play in handheld?!?!?!? You are sounding as crazy as him. I’m an adult and play 50/50 or there abouts - nothing childish about playing in handheld mode
Nintendo's not that smart? I don't know a thing about this guy, but I do know he's full of himself. It takes a certain degree of arrogance and useless pride to say such a thing. It would be one thing if what he said had any truth behind it, but on the Nintendo youtube polls around 60% of voters claimed that they play the console in docked mode mostly in comparison to handheld. This was a couple of days ago and I didn't check the age of the poll so its accuracy probably changed, but I'm sure most of us Nintendo and Switch fans all agree on the point that this Pachter guy is the one who's not smart. If Nintendo truly wasn't smart then they would never have become a multi-billion dollar company or the third most valuable company in all of Japan.
@mariomaster96
"Why do News-Sites still report about Pachter..."
Look at the number of comments this article gets. got it?
@Stocksy Same here I'm 25 and I play about 40% docked and 60% handheld, perhaps he's referring that he doesn't see many adults play their Switch out in public as much as he sees kids do. Otherwise, his comment makes absolutely zero sense.
OMG Never heard anything more stupid.
Yeah ***** right. I dock mine all the time. The only thing the lite has on the regular switch is the battery life. Thats it dude.
@BooJoh Ha, was wondering the same thing myself.
Absolute crap, why would Nintendo do this anyway when the Switch has sold so many devices? I love the idea behind the Switch because of its portability; if I'm going out on a long car journey or if I'm going to Youth Club or college, I can take it with me and continue where I've left off. When I'm at home, I hook it up on my Graphics Tablet and play games. It's so versatile, that's its selling point, without the portability and the ability to turn it into a home console just by putting it in the dock, the Nintendo Switch will just be called a "Nintendo". In fact, I'm not even interested in the Nintendo Switch Lite, and I never will be. Don't listen to this boomer, obviously he knows nothing at all about gaming and isn't doing anyone any favours. He sounds like someone who hasn't gamed in his life, and sounds like he hasn't tried the Switch himself. Basically he's the Donald Trump of the gaming world. Nintendo are definitely more intelligent than him, even a pigeon is more intelligent than him. XD
@zitpig true! XD
514th comment. I didn't read them all. For the people who did, did anyone up there actually agree with Pachter?
But what to make of crystal bulb with this man? He no predict nothing like 30 anniversary and flame emblem. Cant expect to know my tv way
@NEStalgia exactly, i get the impression from Micheal Patcher stupid statement, that he is very pissed( why people are still buying Nintendo stupid console, they have far better options in Sony and Microsoft consoles, a hybrid console, that stupid please ditch this and make a real console like Sony and Microsoft do with them)Patcher want Nintendo to follow his stupid ideas, so Nintendo could turn into a third party like Sega or follow the same path Microsoft and Sony follow for they console.
Pachter reminds me of Neil from the santa claus. He never got a nintendo as a kid and now he doesn't believe in them
Well I don't play the switch. I play the Wii U. But I don't think they should throw out a good console. It's great.
@Volmun seems like you can barely spell english words so don't moan about others. If you can't spell properly then don't say anything at all. Lol "sed" and not "said" wow. Sed is a Unix/Linux CLI command but has no actual language equivalent in english...
Love the analytics here. “I would say that maybe 20% of Switch players play both modes”. Would need a super computer to run all those stats. Mind blow.. What an idiot. Would love to see a survey of the percent of people who play both modes and how much time spent on each.
Yeah No this is obviously someone who does not have kids
Wow 520 comments... people really love to hate on this guy. If he doesn't understand it, he shouldn't be an analyst... it's a simple concept. Didn't the NintendoLife poll show more than 20% of the website visitors use a mix of docked and handheld? Maybe he should have done some research before making these claims. Just because he doesn't understand it, doesn't mean it doesn't work.
Uh I play my Switch handheld AND on the TV. I love this feature and use both. Especially if it's local multiplayer, switching to a TV we can gather around and play was awesome. People I know want the version that can play docked too. I can only imagine this attitude comes from only considering the mobile game market and how big it is. Nintendo offers more than the garbage on mobile.
20% is still alot of people lmao
I always thought it was Patcher.....oh well, screw this idiot. He obviously has an axe to grind with Nintendo. As mentioned, how anyone in the industry listens to him is so beyond me, especially if money and investing is involved.
And then to call Nintendo not that smart when it has had the leading console for 22 months. Selling 20 million copies of Animal Crossing during a pandemic? What a fool he is.
Obviously Mr. Pachter is out of touch and doesn't live with children.
I thought this guy had died in a terrible and painful accident years ago. Or maybe it was just a beautiful dream.
I preferred a world when gaming news media didnt mind this TERRIBLE (because he is terrible, at least speaking of video games) "consultant's" opinions.
There are a few things Nintendo lacks. Intelligence isn't one of them.
The switch lite is terrible. You cant dock it, you can disconnect thr joy cons, the drifting is terrible. Thr switch is better in every way. It really is a lite version. Break a "joycon". Get a new one, cause you cant just buy another. Wanna a pro controller. TOO BAD.
How about you shut the hell up and let me play what I want?
This post is such an obvious money grab. But just in case anyone from Nintendo is looking at this crap I use my switch in handheld full screen and tabletop mode almost every day and if it didn't do that I probably never would have bought it.
@Zyph sorry mate. Not true at all. I stream games at 1080p 60fps on my Nidia Shield TV daily, and can stream that to twitch without noticeable lag.
Technology is accelerating
I doubt only 20% of people use both modes, anybody that knows what’s good for them uses it on TV handheld is so bad like for instance the range for wireless controllers is so ass I can’t even like hold my controller under my table while my handheld mode switch is on the table or my latency goes up like 3/4 of a second
Personally I enjoy the ability to dock it and play on my tv or take it with me if I'm going somewhere so I definitely don't think they should get rid of it.
Also I do not believe there's any way to stream or record off the lite version...but you can with the full sized dockable one.
why do you guys amplify this clown's voice?
I know a LOT of people who play theirs on the TV.
Well that guy dont know as much as he thinks that why he isn't making game consoles but just writing piss poor reviews for them.
I'm going have to disagree here. When I did play my switch a lot sure most of the time I was playing in handheld but then the video chip fried making to built in screen streak and smear. This happened after less than a year of owning the device. If it was a Lite I would literally have nothing but since it can play on the TV still I can use it until Nintendo reopens their repair centers.
@AmplifyMJ 100% agree always nice to get on the TV for a game, but when the TV is require for General media consumption one can still game. Also now my gaming can follow me to the garden and many other places. 2 docks in considering a third and loving it. This man is against the curve.
@Deltath
Ah crap, good catch. I didn't have my glasses on when reading the article, so my brain just saw the easiest name to see. I'll go edit it out if I can find my comment.
I've never heard of the guy, but from reading other comments...it seems the guy just says what he knows will stir people up so he can inflate his fame. I can see making a knee jerk reaction without realizing you're missing variables, but it really doesn't seem like it would be THAT easy to miss that there's plenty of good reasons to keep the option of both alive. If he ISN'T just doing it for fame/infamy, then someone really needs to teach him that adults are supposed to think things through before making extreme statements. There's very few absolutes in life, so anytime we state one....we should always bring our A game. This guy brought his D(ouchebag) game. And even then it was a D minus.
I like being able to play both ways
I just looked up this guys bio and his literal job is to stir up crowds and guess what? He has been doing just that with both Facebook and has talked bad about iwata after his death (come on man he's been great at his job and I'm not defending nintendo they've done a ton of dumb things but he always seemed to steer them in a pretty good direction). He literally is just trying to get attention why are you taking this seriously? He couldn't be dumb enough to talk bad about Iwata as hard as he did if he wasn't just seeking attention, he knows full well nintendo is a smarter company than most others and that docked mode is just as used as the handheld he just wants attention. Heres an idea: don't give it to him.
As a switch lite owner of 3 consoles when looking at buying my kids the hand held system i originally thought we can play together ❤ 😒 wrong cant share games have to buy the game times 3 if you want to play together.
I just signed up to comment on how this is the stupidest idea.
This has to be the dumbest article.
I'm a truck driver and when I'm home I love playing my switch on my big flat screen TV. When I leave out I take my switch with me and play portable.
Another desperate ploy to stay relevant.
😳 My face when I saw the number of comments! 😂
I have both Switch consoles. I got both around the same time. While I enjoy how much easier it is to carry my Lite in my backpack, I rarely use it. Matter of fact, if it wasn’t for me seeing the article on this site, about charging the console, I wouldn’t have touched it when I did. Also, it’s rare that I play my OG Switch on my tv.
Welp Pachter's off his rocker again.
I Enjoy the Switch feature. Being able to play on TV, gives me a chance to play the games my kids are playing with them. The Switch controllers being able to come off leaves many different ways to play your game. In addition to turning one controller into two(which is awesome in my household of two kids). Just because the benefits are not accustomed to your game style, doesn't mean Nintendo isn't smart. If You like the Lite so much, stick with the hand held consoles. But to others, being able to play your Switch on the TV brings Local Multiplayer back in the equation, making it much easier to play with friends and family together. I wish other Game developers brought more local Multiplayer games to the table. Nintendo has brought the "table" to the Screen. Thank you Nintendo.
@Giancarlothomaz He's the same guy that predicted 3ds was going to fail after ps vita launched.
I really don't understand how he keeps getting paid. He's an industry analyst at a securities firm. People are investing large sums of money based on his advice. One would think keeping that job would depend on accurate estimations over time, and that too would involve understanding the market of said industry. This guy repeatedly has proven little understanding of the market, and continuously bad predictive. And now he's gone as far as calling abandoning nearly a quarter of a market as "smart" proving it's not just the industry he doesn't understand. He has no business acumen at all.
So what is he doing still employed as an analyst at a securities firm? Anyone that depends on his predictions for large sums of money would have gone bankrupt a decade ago!
1) I don't want a Switch Lite
2) I almost exclusive play in docked mode
NLife knew exactly what they were doing, posting an article about this clown. 90% of the time he’s wrong, but he just there to get under your skin.
Pachter has to been the most inaccurate, poorly advising “analysts” out there. The only things he ever gets right is when he states the obvious.
“Nintendo’s not very smart, so they should stop selling the consistently highest selling model, of their sales record breaking console, because of a percentage I plucked out of thin air, with no actual research, says Switch owners don’t play games on their TVs, even though the last, actual research that was actually done, shows it’s closer to 50/50”. Sure thing pal.
The man deserves no praise, or acknowledgement. But his dislikability makes for great clickbait, sites like NLife just can help themselves and acknowledge the clown.
Pachter is famous for one thing and one thing only, being out of touch with gamers.
This has to be the dumbest article I've read in awhile
why even get rid of the dock if you want fire stick instead, are you too lazy to pick it up or put it in???
What? Where are these stats even pulled out of? Delete this article 😂. Or don't because its gotten huge amount of clicks and the comments section blew up, exactly as planned.
Circa 2017. 2 seconds to search on google.
More opinion than analysis. Pachter has said some things that I agree with, but most of the time his ramblings lack any kind of external validity to those who actually own anything Nintendo. He has got this so wrong surely he has lost all credibility. Devaluing his own brand
@Signed_Up_To_Comment I'll assume you're talking about GameStream and not Geforce Now. Try to think a little about your setup. That's because you're streaming your PC games through (I assume a fast) local network and/or internet. I am talking about a direct console to TV connection. Correct me if I'm wrong but the only options we have right now for that are Miracast, Chromecast, Bluetooth, Wifi Direct, Infrared. If you're trying to stream realtime rendered games especially at 4K over any of those then goodluck. Unlike movies, streaming games is a hard hurdle.
If wirelessly streaming games was easy then HDMI cables shouldn't be our only option by now.
I'm not contesting the fact technology evolves. I'm saying we are not there yet in terms of speed and efficiency.
What a stupid article. Must be nice to have money to burn, with all the financial hardship from a virus, to just "scrap" the old Switch, and buy a new Lite.
Hahaha, can’t believe Patcher is still doing the ol’ Nintendo-whining circuit! He’s been an “analyst” for decades, and has spent almost all of those years deriding Nintendo and their decisions to an almost fanboy-ish degree. Given the massive growth in Nintendo stocks since he started slating them years ago, the big question is how does he still have an analyst job?!
Has this guy lost his mind?? The future is the hybrid, they just need to offer joycons with the 3ds style thumb sticks and make it fold in half controller to controller so it can fit in a pocket and boom switch 2 new and improved. Keep the dock. The future will be phones that dock to TVs that will replace consoles and desktop setups to replace desktop PCs (unless you want high powered gaming) Nintendo had that part right. Also the lite sucks. Wouldnt be against a 3d switch like the 3ds screen either.
I don't completely disagree with the sentiment but I don't think this is the correct approach. I use handheld mode 80% of the time. That being said, I love docked mode and many games are better with a regular controller type of experience—I just never find the time. Also I will say that the Switch is only playable in handheld mode if you buy a grip because the default design of the Joycon + Switch combo is horrible and will give you crippling hand cramps in mere minutes.
Personally I think they should just ditch the Joycons and create a Switch Lite type of console with actually decent grips and just sell separate controllers for people who want docked mode. Make the console a really solid handheld with the option to dock. They can keep the existing Joycon paradigm they just won't ever need to be a part of the handheld experience.
lol what? Is this a joke? Where is this guy getting his information?
Michael Pachter is paid by games companies to advise them. Nintendo isn’t one of them. Thus he slags off Nintendo. They’re not the only one he does it to.
He is a smart man. Even if only 20% of Switch owners use the TV, by generation’s end, that might be around 20 million people. Which is about the entire install base of the GameCube
I prefer to play Switch on TV at home with the Pro controller but it is nice to have the option of making it portable when I go travelling.
I think it’s Mr. Pachter who isn’t very smart here. But when has that been anything new.
This guy has no clue if nintendo switch was just another handheld i would not have one because its an hybrid you can put it on the tv combined with the quality games]that i got it.
I play a lot on handheld mode as it's easier to pick up and play, but I actually enjoy TV mode a whole lot more.
This guy is a clown if he wants Nintendo to get rid of the main selling point of the console 😑
What a dummy. I personally prefer docked mode, and I only play handheld if I'm taking it on a trip or I need to be away from my TV but that doesn't mean I insist the Switch should be "TV only." And I won't begrudge those who primarily play handheld, whether it's with a dockable Switch or the Switch Lite. If people sold their dock because they're that confident they won't need it, good for them. It doesn't mean everyone else should be denied a chance to dock.
Pachter is the Skip Bayless of Gaming. He is meant to give idiotic hot takes to get more clicks or views to generate revenue.
Really. Me and one of my two sisters use it both ways. The other sister just got the light so she could play it hand held.
Huh, well isn't he just so ***** smart then? I wonder why his excellency hasn't descended from on high to help us mere mortals out with his cogent expertise.
Man ***** this guy. Nerds are supposed to be the cool ones but clearly they're letting anyone in the club these days.
Ok, so, who is Patcher and why am I supposed to care what he says?
I've been playing my Switch in Handheld mode lately only because I misplaced my charge cable, and it won't let me play docked mode using my phone's charge cable to charge my Switch. Once I find the proper charge cable I'll be playing in TV mode so I can play everything on a bigger screen.
The switch's main selling point is to be a hybrid console. Does he not know that?
Sureeee and while we're at it why don't we have ebay stop online shopping and start taking bids at auction houses only
My wife plays handheld only because she literally only plays Animal Crossing and that's what she was used to after New Leaf. We waited in line for almost two hours to get her the AC dockable Switch. A Switch she never docks, but wanted for the design. Nintendo has always used exclusivity as a selling point. Meanwhile, I flip flop all the time. The option IS the selling point, even when it's not.
I think the boost in Lite sales had more to do with availability when Animal Crossing went crazy popular during the early stages of Covid lockdowns.
@xZombieMob cry more
@BenAV I had the same response. Switch is doing dynamite business right now, anyway.
How ridiculous... I may not play via my TV a lot of the time but there are some games that need it, ringfit for example, or playing with family.
So, are we finally talking about new hardware here?
I think I know what happened here, Pachter was so convinced by the Xbox Series and PS5 that he felt the home console part of the Switch had became useless. He secretly wants a more powerful handheld that can keep up with these next-gen consoles, just without a dock. That would be a huge mistake, however.
The dock IS useful. Playing games on them makes a bigger difference than what you think. I know multiplatform games won't look as detailed as the other consoles, but the TV still has its own properties that make the experience much more immersive. You've also got the finest first-party and exclusive games there, and those are the ones that feel more authentical on a TV. Nintendo now develops with an unified platform in mind, so these multiple peripherals and iterations won't be trouble, just like the multiple mobile phones iterations and Xbox Series S/X.
Besides, it helps the console survive power outages (I don't know if the other modern consoles can too, someone who knows please tell me...)
I play handheld 90% of the time, but I would never want a Switch Lite. Those things are basically time limited so long as Nintendo doesn't fix the joy-con drift.
I only play it in docked mode, I rarely ever played it as a handheld
@BooJoh Well, no. And the fact that these gaming websites still give this complete moron attention is extremely annoying.
Where is he getting these statistics from? And what’s stopping people who play it hand held only from playing it held only right now? All Nintendo would have to do is offer a reduced price package that includes an AC charger and excludes the dock and controller grip. I only play hand held, when I’m out or when my family needs to use the TV. It’s really nice to have both playing options. Being able to play it on screen justifies the higher price point for games like BOTW and being able to appreciate the game on a big screen without losing the players commitment to keep playing from the comfort of their bed. I have bought more games for my Switch than I did for my DS and Wii combined.
The dumbest ***** I've ever heard
The problem with Nintendo is they won't get proper feedback being as popular as they are. Whatever factors keep them from fanbase feedback, they should stick to program design concepts and ask the fans what physical features each new system should contain that will help with gamelan comfort and functionality.
This one concept has eluded development companies for years and never has there been a console that lived up to expectations at anywhere close to 95% and above. Closest I've seen any console appeal to people, it had about 83% of the details people wanted and expected.
Always are we saying we want this feature and that feature added, yet the companies will take away something that was functional and made the experience more enjoyable.
Plus, Nintendo always has the right concept with each system. However, the execution should ALWAYS rely on customer and fanbase feedback.
And not just social media, but face-to-face interactive questions and comments throughout the year, so the company (or any company for that matter) will get proper assessment of product placement.
What better way to be involved with the whole production process and guaranteed sales than to have game loving minds coming together and allow the product to be good upon release.
My sister bought Switch light though it would be cheaper and play the same game, After 3 months she sold the switchlight and bought the switch, She said bigger the better, Stop this nonsence, and that is your answer.....
@Dr_Corndog I guess I had seen your message in a different POV...? Idk, It took me ages to find my reply, and I never found what you initially said... I hate this chat system.. Also, there is one more thing I have to say. I thought the Wii U was great (I have one myself. Its color is black but that's not important) and I also think it's a good My First Game Console for little kids. Basically everything on there is Nintendo, and if their parents used to have a Wii, they can play their games on the Wii U. I'd say the Wii U is a good way to get a first view of the gaming industry. That's my opinion tho.
Haha, incredible he still got a voice/has a job and that others post his drivel.
(Not important, but just as a note: I play 90% on TV.)
Well he's an idiot because I almost exclusively play my Switch docked and so do all of my buddies who own one. And the pro controller is infinitely more comfortable for my hands than the tiny joy-con buttons that you have to press as a portable.
@Dr_Corndog can you really blame them though? I dunno who this guy is but he seems pretty moronic to me from this at least. Anyways, If you say unreasonable things about a franchise or Company which has a fanbase, for example, this...... you'll definitely get haters who will probably refuse to see your achievements. If this Patcher guy is so smart, he should know this.
My POV, this guy is an idiot , even if a small percentage of fans played on the Dock, it would still be a few million players , sure focusing on the switch light would earn them more money , but that would be Basically saying eff you to all the people who do play on the docks which would earn them a terrible reputation.
Everyone I know including myself, uses the Switch on the dock mode more than handheld. The guy saying otherwise, know nothing about what he is claiming. He should just quit his job and go bacl to school. What a moron.
Pachter is a f.. moron
Uh....I care? He can shove it. I love it on my PC screen. I only use the handheld if I need the PC for something else or am going somewhere.
I play my Switch mainly Docked, occasionally in handheld. Having the option is genius as it caters to both traditional and mobile gamer. Simple. The Dock should have had some hardware in though to bump performance more (better processor chip that draws more power).
The Switch Lite is awesome the Original Switch looks balky.
Most idiotic opinion on Switch ever. If you want handheld only, then go with the Lite - if you fancy the hybrid options - get the original one.
I don't want to think about not being able to play Odyssey and BoTW on my big TV docked mode.
sure I guess, I mean I already have ps4 it’d be kinda dumb to play the switch on tv instead
I love the switch since its a real hybrid. I play it docked, portable mode, table top mode local ad hoc for 2 players. If we are talking about pure handheld , i still prefer the 3ds overall.
> "I don’t really understand the whole hybrid concept"
That says it all. I've been a fan of the hybrid concept ever since the PSP and PSVita/TV. (And Nintendo has actually been doing hybrid ever since the Super Game Boy.)
I use docked mode every day for Ring Fit Adventure, and it's the primary mode for all local competitive or cooperative gaming. But I always use handheld mode for single-player Mario Kart or Super Smash Bros.
The mode I have only used a few times is tabletop mode, but there are certainly use cases for it (e.g. travel.)
I am sure Nintendo doesn't want to cannibalize regular Switch sales, and they also want to save space and lower cost, but I still wish that there were an adapter or something to allow you to connect the Switch Lite to an external display, like you could with the PSP2000/3000 or the full-sized Switch. Certain games like Ring Fit Adventure are technically playable on the Switch Lite (if you get two joy-cons) but would be better with a larger screen.
I saw like 12 to 13 Nintendo Switch Lite's and not the original model at my local Walmart. Haven't seen the original model in months. Did they actually discontinue it? Or are they working on more shipments of the original model? Or did they realize their original models faulty issue and are in the process of discontinuing it
We won't be able to play certain game's and we have to buy a new switch if you want to play with someone else because the switch lite does not have joycon's.
This guy sounds like a big hater. Nintendo, just brush your shoulders and shake those haters off 😂
@KingBowser They are likely still shipping but takes a long time because of the demand but if people want a switch and lives alone might as well get the lite unless you like Mario party or play's on the TV
@ULTIMATE-Shy-Guy1234 I actually like playing in Handheld mode, but I really would like the feel of shaking the Joy-Con with Super Mario Galaxy that was bundled in 3D All-Stars. I'm still hoping to get a Switch for Christmas and not a Switch Lite actually. It just doesn't feel that oomph in the Joy-Con, like it defeats the whole purpose of using the Joy-Con. I do understand the big factor of price though, but I really don't understand why they couldn't just reduce the price of the original Switch?
I like how Pachter comes out every half a decade, says something stupid, and then vanishes
@KingBowser I think if they did lower the price they would get less money then they are spending to make the switch itself, I think they wanted to make a less expensive option for other people and spend less money to make a normal switch. And Someone was getting lazy so they also likely wanted to make a new version of the switch so they can get more money from people that would normally buy a 300$ switch and likely save money.
If the switch is gonna be handheld only, than Nintendo will need to make a home console too.
What an idiot!
Pachter has not thought of Nintendo players with Visual impairment ! Some people can not play the switch light as the screen is too small for them to see . so does Nintendo want to lose there cash as Visual impaired players may like bright games like Mario , Zelda , animal crossing and Autumn's Journey.
But....thats what Nintendo does all this time. It treats its device as a handheld.
Except bethesda and a game from Square( Dragon Quest) and a few games here and there from others, the arent any major releases from 3rd party devs. All we play is indie games, old releases and we wait for Zelda 2, Metroid and Bayoneta.
@BooJoh i love switch
This is my first comment in this forum, I just got my nintendo switch, and it's amazing by the way, I don't know the guy and I totally disagree with him.
When you've got a family or friends or normal social life you definitely need a docked play.
Also using a small screen for prolnged period is not something my eyes like.
What a stupid article. With Switch you can switch from console mode to handheld. Switch is very versatile console, I can shoot with gun controller using motion controls in Wolfenstein or Sniper Elite when in console mode, also playing Grid or Mario Kart with steering wheel is fun. In Luigis Mansion 3 I had to use console mode to get bigger screen. You can use different controlling styles and bigger screen, you don't have to, but you can, that is the whole point with Switch.
Hell no, I know a lot of people who play the switch docked more than they do handheld and whenever people get joycon drift they can at the very very least of things get new joycons (IK its expensive, drift is still dumb.) where as the lite you have to sacrifice trying to fix your entire console, overall the switch is just the better option and I do not see anybody using a switch lite or even considering it, its a nice budget choice but nothing more, if the lite was stand alone the switch would not have been as successful as it is today.
@PeeKayy what did he say in 2000,2005,2010,2015? I only heard of this guy just now lol
I really cannot understand how this guy finds a job. His employers are not so smart either...
I personally choose switch because I could enjoy it on the go and big screen at home which mobile/PC/Ps system can't give me....
This person hasn't a clue what they are talking about. Nintendo have been going since the late 1970's and have outlasted countless gaming companies as a major player. Their former main rival, Sega, makes games for them as an example. The Switch is an ingenious design with cartridges mixed with Micro SD support. It is a great handheld and home console device. Nothing Nintendo made last gen or this gen was a disappointment to me when it came to the Switch. If a Switch Pro is made, I'll get it and keep my current model 2 Switch. My One X is basically only kept for certain games like Darksiders 3, Crash Bandicoot 4, and remade games that aren't on Switch. I love how the Switch doesn't have Netflix, apps, achievements and trophies, a messaging system like Facebook. I play it for the games and that's why I'm not getting a Ps5 or Series cause I'm tired of those types of games and this started last gen.
@Deadsea1993 Nintendo have been around for a LOT longer than that. They were founded in the 19th century as a playing cards company in 1889. Not a typo that is EIghteen EIGHTY NINE.
This guy is a complete clown and is so out of touch.
@Kienda What did he say following Iwata's passing?
I mostly play in handheld and Mom has a Lite. Doesn’t mean I’d be willing to give up my dock
God I love you Pachter
heck no!!! I love using both and is way easier and cheaper than buying separate game consoles not only that but, the system is small enough for you to carry it anywhere without having so much space taken. PlayStation and Xbox have both given up on the idea of handheld products so having switch combine both for just a few extra bucks is amazing!
If you ever feel like a dummy, remember that guy said those words unironically...and enjoy your full Switch.
Oha!
I'm clearly in the minority of the 20% this Pachter guy mentions.
