Three years ago, the eighth major installment in the Mario Kart series got a major speed boost when Nintendo released Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Nintendo Switch.
The 'Deluxe' version includes all of the existing DLC, sees the return of the proper battle mode, adds new characters like the Inklings, and updates the game with Nintendo Labo support. Nintendo's Australia and New Zealand Twitter account shared the following tweet, to remind Mario Kart fans far and wide of the special occasion:
To put this in perspective, Nintendo fans have technically been playing the eighth entry since 2014 (that's six years). Despite 'Deluxe' being an enhanced re-release, it's gone on to outsell Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U – shifting more than 22 million copies as of December 31st, 2019. The Switch version also happens to be the system's best-selling game to-date, according to Nintendo's official data.
If this anniversary isn't enough of an excuse to return to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Nintendo of America will soon be hosting the North American Open on 8th May. The top eight players each day will receive 2500 My Nintendo Gold Points.
Are you still playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe three years on? Are you ready for a new Mario Kart game? Leave a comment down below.
I'm ready for more tracks. The lack of any DLC in three years suggests to me that when they come it will be as Mario Kart 9.
Yeah, I honestly wish they cashed in on some DLC with this one. I still grabbed it on sale because it's great, and I'm very happy that they fixed the battle system. Still, some DLC would've been a nice holdover. There's never been 2 MarioKart games on one system, so it seems strange (to me!) for MarioKart 9 to be coming. Still, I'd be happy if it was...huge.
I am probably the only one who is fine with no DLC. The "content" would been novel at best for most people around, as they're complaining the online is dead 3 days after the DLC and every casual moved on once more.
No DLC, it has mechanical issues — bring on MK9.
Looking forward to celebrating MK8's sixth birthday in roughly a month.
And I had fun playing it online with people just today during nap time
I don't know about any of you, but I'm ready for a new F-Zero game or at least an HD Collection.
Bring on 9, and bring back first person mode from 7! Was so disappointed it wasnt in this one. Great game, had great legs too, but yeah. It's time for some freshness.
I really hope they move to a brand new engine for MK9. 7 and 8 felt rather similar to me but every other game in the series used to innovate massively.
Double dash 2, or DLC. Those are the options.
With the anti-gravity, first-person would've been nauseating and caused headaches when going upside down and around walls. Maybe the next, but not here.
What sort of players exactly?
In one month, it will have been 6 years since the original Mario Kart 8 released on the Wii U.
I might just come back and play some Mario Kart 8, if I can put Animal Crossing down. Would have been nice if Mario Kart 8 Deluxe had some DLC with a few more characters and tracks, but that’s fine. I’m sure Mario Kart 9 will come eventually.
@JR150 nothing wrong with people having options even if they make one sick.
@JR150 I personally dont have issues with such, and besides, it wouldnt be mandatory. Options!
Dolphin Shores is my jam! Love the sax in that track! And the Whirlpool is just 🤤🔥🔥
I would buy more DLC in a heartbeat! More tracks, characters, karts, battle modes!
But one thing I do wish for the new Mario Kart is character and Kart customization. I would love to see different color variations, costumes from different entries (similar to MK world, even power-up looks).
Tip: Play Regional instead of worldwide. Japanese and Korean players are the most competitive while Western ones just play casually. But yeah I know the feel, it's not worth stressing over.
It’s been 8 years since Mario Kart Three Deluxe released on Nintendo Switch.
Back playing it recently since my eldest Son got into it and yes, it’s still a fabulous game that deserves its success on Switch.
And it's been six years since MK8 launched on Wii U. A great game for sure, but I'm ready for something new. Even another DLC pack would be nice.
It's the only Mario Kart game I have ever played. I love it, and boot it up when my dad wants to play.
My friends and I have been playing this one online a LOT lately since we can’t hang out in real life. It’s still crazy fun.
This is the greatest racing game ever created. A true masterpiece from Nintendo.
@Paraka I'm fine with no dlc as well, for one reason; it's the Deluxe edition. As stated in the article it enhanced the original game, included all previously released dlc, added some characters and a new mode. It's a complete package. You can't call it "deluxe edition" if you're going to release dlc down the road. Asking for dlc is simply baffling, as they created it for this updated release and marketed it as the definitive version. That'd be like getting Skyrim dlc today just because it's been out for awhile and a new Elder Scrolls hasn't come out.
Those who have been asking for dlc, should have been asking for MK9, which we will get most likely in 2022, with an announcement next year.
for some reason, my mario kart 8 deluxe game card wont work anymore. does anybody know why? its been a year since i played and im desperate
@GoblinKing86 : Those begging for DLC are the bane of physical customers.
I resented the DLC in the Wii U version as it comprised content that wasn't on the disc.
What made double-dipping on Switch so appealing was the fact that I could finally own the entire game on physical format.
I would rather have a new installment every few years or so than DLC any day of the week. When the costs of DLC pile up anyway, it far, far exceeds the content in their respective base games (and you don't have the benefit of sharing that content with other members in the same household). Just look at Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. 12 measly (and mostly underwhelming) characters and a few Mii costumes already exceeds the cost of the base game! I would much, much, much rather have had a new (or rather, revised) Super Smash Bros. installment, say, 2-3 years later (akin to the many, many variants of Street Fighter II) than DLC (and it would have been cheaper too!).
@arekdougy i know what you’re saying... but technically that isn’t true... because virtual console is a thing.
But I assume you meant there are never two new Mario karts on the same console, and that so far, is correct.
What an annoying thing for me to say.
And its still one of the greatest racing games ever.
I bought it, but haven't really put that much time into it. I had already put countless hours into it on the Wii U and the new content in Deluxe didn't do much for me as most of it was exclusive to the Battle Mode and I'm not a big BM guy(i just like to race). I was hoping they would rectify that with DLC for Deluxe, but nope. After 3 years it seems highly unlikely they would make new DLC packs for it. I am definitely ready for 9 now, but will they do it? No Nintendo console has ever had more than 1 MK..
I LOVE MK 8, been playing it since the Wii U, but I really want MK 9, or even a "Mario Kart Collection" of sorts with all the old tracks with upgraded graphics and a mix of all the karts ever offered. Though I guess Double Dash's karts would either be nixed or redesigned to not have the second character.
The next one should just include all characters from Nintendo and call it super smash racing!
The game only needs three things for perfection
1: Don't default to the control options nobody wants to use when playing local multiplayer. It's like a bowling alley defaulting to bumpers on.
2. R.O.B. returns
3. No blue shells. What an awful powerup from a design perspective. The stated purpose is to help players at the back of the pack. The bullet bill does that; the blue shell only helps the people at the front of the pack and is only a frustration in single player. What an awful mechanic.
That's all I can think of to nitpick, so the game must be pretty good.
270 hours on mk8. I'm ready for mk9. Or at least some new tracks.
@sixrings Maybe mario remasters will include older Mario Karts like double dash or mk7. Probably wishfill thinking.
I have the Mario karts onthe 3ds and the wiiu . Not switch tho. I hate paying full price for games. As such I own two Nintendo titles.
@GoblinKing86 What would be wrong with Skyrim DLC? I'd buy Majora's Mask N64 DLC if such a thing were possible. As long as it's a good game and reasonably priced what difference does it make when it comes out in relation to the base game? I have a much bigger problem with locking exclusive DLC behind a $80 rehashed edition (that doesn't otherwise come with $80 worth of new content).
Actually it was released on the 28th. So today's the official 3 year anniversary
@arekdougy While strange to have two entries on one console, it's also strange that we got a re-release on the Switch to begin with. The formula for Mario Kart 8 has largely remained the same since it's release on the Wii U in May 2014. And if we don't get a unique Mario Kart game on Switch this would be the first console or handheld since the SNES to not have it's own exclusive Mario Kart entry. I completely understand that early in the Switch's life it made sense to re-release a three year old Mario Kart. But most of the Nintendo community assumed at that point that it was just to tide things over until a new entry could be developed. Now, three years later it's time to hear some news for Mario Kart. Mario Kart 8 on Wii U was great, and it's cheap $13 DLC made it the biggest and best entry to date. I think most of us would have been fine with another two or four cups of DLC for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, but given all of this time a new entry is really needed.
No I don't play it, but I do play the newer Sonic and Crash racing, occasionally.
It would be good to know what Nintendo has in the pipeline and what they are working on now. The movie industry lets us know, why not the games industry?
If its not in the pipeline then there will be nothing new for at least 5 to 10 years. But may be a couple more tracks are being worked on, but I don't think I would bother this time.
There was a vague rumour earlier this year that Nintendo big holiday game this year will have tires. So here's hoping its a new Mario Kart, its time. As much as I love Mario Kart 8 I've been playing it for 6 years, it's time for something new.
We haven't had a new Mario Kart game for 6 years, so yes I'm more than ready for a new game
Yeah? Well it's been 6 years since we last got af new Mario Kart. It always used to be one per system. But not for Switch I guess. I mean, I totally understand why they'd port Mario Kart 8 to Switch, but that's all it is. You can say it's been out 3 years. But do you really believe that yourself?
I cannot see Mario kart getting better than this they may as well just do dlc from now on.
@TheLightSpirit if it’s any consolation mate it happens to all of us, I had way more fun with it when I was able to accept that the final lap is a free for all where cheap tactics can win anyone the race and being in 2nd at that point isn’t really an advantage.
I really want a mario kart 9
I have been playing MK8 again during quarantine and yes, it's still a fantastic games. But I know those tracks by heart since 6 years.
Can't wait for a MK9. Even if, as someone said in those comments, that will be strange to have two Mario Kart on the same system.
Maybe MK9 will take advantage on a future Switch Pro ?...
I play alot of online shooters on PC, Xbox One and PS4, but Mario Kart 8 is still among the best online games overall.
I play racing and battle mode online.
I've been playing since it came out on WiiU. I really which they would do some dlc packs, like one every 6-9 months. Loads of people would buy it. It'd help a lot during the current world problems too.
Funny enough I just got a copy for my daughter for her birthday tomorrow (along with a Switch Lite)
@Nico07 im confused, have you never heard of super Mario kart? it came out on snes
Played it to death on Wii u and same on switch I would buy dlc or a new game I’m not fussed either way I was playing it yesterday and if you strip back everything and forget it’s a Mario kart game you are left with a superb arcade racing game especially on 200cc
Double dash remake when?
Also why not incorporate Double-dash's mechanics and characters into Kart 9?
Probably alone but this and Mario Kart 7 (7 more so) felt really boring to me after Double Dash, DS, and Wii.
I really hope we get a new game and not DLC. A new game with a more interesting gimmick this time please? 6 whole years of this same game, 6 years...
3 years and they never fix their online mode
Next version should be called Mario Kart Ultimate and they just keep adding content, paid or not. They have loads of old tracks to add and should bring them all over, along with new versions. 6 years is a long time to be milking a game!!!
One of my least fulfilling purchases. I bought it to play against friends with a Switch, but it didn’t justify the price. I owned the Wii U version so very little marginal benefit for me. Was really hoping for some DLC.
That's the post.
Have you sufficiently acted like the normal 8 didn't happen now? Can we get a decent switch only mario kart now?!
This game either needs more DLC tracks, or Nintendo should consider getting Mario Kart 9 on the way.
In 2018, I literally spent almost an entire day playing Mario Kart (all except 7) and reviewing Deluxe for an assignment...then I played 7 during my lunch break the next day.
I've been ready for MK9 since I finished playing 8 on the WiiU.
Gonna spend some more time playing Tour till 9 arrives I guess.
Three years since I got my Switch and MK8D
@GoblinKing86 - That's another solid reason; Don't pull a Koei-Tecmo with "complete" editions.
We don't let K-T do it, it's not different for Nintendo to do it.
I still play this on Wii U, the DLC was some of the most reasonably priced and top quality I have seen from any company. Would like a New F zero, Excite Truck (even Excite bike at this rate) or how about another Namco collaboration and release Ridge Racer with some Nintendo and Sega cross overs. We all know Ninty, Sega and Namco are the triforce.
6 years since a new Mario Kart game.
...and no new game in sight.
Will we reach 10?
Instead of it being Nintendo's #1 Franchise (check the numbers) you'd think it was a terrible afterthought.
Who releases updates to franchises once every 6+ years? or 10?
(please don't mention the mobile one - touch-screen and tilt mobile racing controls are so inferior they might as well be Zelda on the Philips CDI)
We need Mario Kart 9!!
