Re: Preview: Battle Princess Madelyn Effortlessly Steps Into Sir Arthur's Boots

cyrus_zuo

I've gotten to where I can't bring myself to buy an indie game day 1.
They go on sale so quickly for such huge discounts, I often haven't even gotten to playing them before they are discounted.

I'm interested in this game, but will wait for a sale. That's going to be my standard approach going forward. It's just me responding to how the indies are running their businesses.

Re: Review: GRIP - An Exciting But Often Twitchy Combat Racer

cyrus_zuo

@Cobalt - unfortunately Nintendo is becoming more like Xbox and PS4 every day.
Microsoft and Sony have thrived releasing same type of inane repetitive content repackaged year over year over year. (Call of Duty 28 anyone?)

I like Nintendo because they do different things. They aren't afraid to try something different and have it totally fail. (Is labo the latest?) That is the path to finding fun new things, and I love Nintendo most when it is on that path.

The more Nintendo is like MS and Sony, the less interesting they are. I wish Nintendo was further away and not following the narrow path of the others in online, games, and everything!

Re: New Data From Nintendo Shows The True Selling Power Of Switch's Evergreen Titles

cyrus_zuo

This chart also shows why Switch sales are struggling this year.
EVERY great game came out last year!
It has been a slow, slow year for the Switch from Nintendo, and I don't see it turning around.
Smash will be fun, but why hasn't there been DLC for MK8 for the Switch? No tracks in years!
Why wasn't there more meaningful DLC for Odyssey? or additional content for Zelda? (since Zelda is usually a once every 5 years game that used to have handheld releases in-between the lack of the inbetween games for GBA/DS/3DS means it'll be a long-time for a new one)

I love my Switch, and I LOVE the indie games, where I've spent most of this year.
So don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan from day 1, but Year 2 of the Switch has been super lackluster from Nintendo, and that is why they won't hit their sales. They lost momentum, and unless Metroid 4 is crazy amazing AND coming out in the first half of next year, AND there is something else big coming soon, Nintendo already fired all their big ammo, it's already all been released, and now we just wait for the next console release that will have the next Mario Kart, Zelda, Mario & Splatoon games...
...sadface...

Re: Here Are The Top 10 Best-Selling Games For Wii U, 3DS, Wii And Nintendo DS (As Of September 2018)

cyrus_zuo

I thought this was interesting:

Super Smash Bros. (Wii U) 5.35 million + 9.35 million (3DS) = 14.7 million
Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii) - 13.29 million

The latest Smash outsold the one on Wii, despite the Wii's crazy huge install base.

Fun numbers, and boy the WiiU had some GREAT Nintendo titles. I really hope 3D Land gets and update/boost for Switch, and I'd love a 'Super Mario Player' game on Switch that simply let you play all the online levels people have made on WiiU. For $20 I'd be in!

Re: Fast RMX Dev Shin'en Multimedia Teases Switch Announcement To Be Shared Tomorrow

cyrus_zuo

My hope is that they've hired a game designer equal to their visual abilities. There is no question they make some of the best looking indie games in existence. I've bought most of them.
However, the game design, track design, and level design always leaves me wanting.
I'm excited to hear what they are doing next, and would love to hear they did something with Nintendo, because I know it would be a perfect combo of visuals and mechanics.

Re: New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe Coming to Nintendo Switch in January

cyrus_zuo

If they get rid of the freeze every time someone dies I'd buy it again...

...3D World is SOO much better than this though. Or even a Mario Maker Player that would let you just play the existing fan-made levels on Switch. I feel like the only reason they did this one is they didn't want a 3D mario game competing with SM Odyssey.

Re: Miyamoto Regrets Design Choices Made During Development Of Super Mario Run

cyrus_zuo

Endless runners do not excite me.
Even Mario can't save an endless runner from being a bad experience.
Phones aren't made for Mario.
Mario is at his best when you can explore and have tight controls.
Phones give you sloppy, limited controls and take away exploration.
That's one of the reasons phones never took over gaming like some thought and consoles are having record sales. Phone gaming tends to be shallow.

Re: Review: Go Vacation (Switch)

cyrus_zuo

This was our most played Wii game, and I'll get the switch version day 1!
I do agree with the comments that the individual games are not close to Nintendo quality control, but exploring is the real fun here. Playing with other players to explore, find the chests, and making use of the huge open world space by racing to spots on the map or playing tag, is awesome!

That said, this game is for a younger audience. I've enjoyed playing with my kids, but wouldn't likely turn it on by myself.

Re: NBA Playgrounds 2 Will Now Be Published By 2K Games, Adding Some "NBA 2K Flair"

cyrus_zuo

Will it still be terrible?
That the real question.
If the gameplay matched the visuals, Nba playgrounds would be a good game, but it doesn't.
The shooting/dunking is so unintuitive they had to add a meter, and even with it there is no sense of flow in offense, you just stare at the meter as you shoot.
Defense is even worse as pressing the button to steal the ball often does nothing. There is no visual, nothing!

The game looks good, but plays terribly.
I wish it played anything like Jam, I loved that game!
2K18 is a fantastic game as well, so maybe 2K can fix the mess that is Nba Playgrounds!

Re: Video: Get Ready For An Action-Packed Holiday With The New Go Vacation Trailer

cyrus_zuo

My kids still play the Wii version regularly, so I feel like I know this game inside and out. I'd love more info on what's new.

Looking at the brief 4 player parts of the video it appears that they may still be turning off all NPCs when playing multiplayer, but I'm hoping not. That always made the world feel rather empty.
It's be great if you could play events without everyone playing the event though I recognize that's probably a technical impossibility.

Re: Review: Runbow (Switch eShop)

cyrus_zuo

As an 8 player coop or versus game Runbow is fantastic.

I've introduced it to a ton of groups and it always wins people over.
It's one of the best 8 player games ever made.

There is a pre-order price reduction through tomorrow, so I already bought it for the 4th time. Looking forward to playing through all the adventure mode content in coop again!

Re: Video: Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle And The Millionaires’ Conspiracy Gets New Switch Trailer

cyrus_zuo

I've played and loved all the Layton games including the Phoenix wright one.

This one really misses the magic of the others with no overreaching story due to the game being sold as multiple mini stories on mobile making it feel small and shallow compared to the others.

The puzzles are also a solid notch below, almost half of them are just tricky questions involving math that you enter a number for your answer.

It's a far cry from the great Layton games, but better than nothing.

Re: Review: R.B.I. Baseball 18 (Switch)

cyrus_zuo

I honestly think this review should be retracted.

The factual errors, of which there are many, and negative tone I believe shows the writer didn't give the game a proper playing.
It feels like a fan of "The Show" was asked to write a review of a rival game and so the rival didn't get a fair shake.

Again, the game isn't great, but the review says it is terrible, which isn't true, and many of the facts given in the review are wrong.

A number of people are calling out in the comments that this game is a fun arcade like baseball that had a touch of Sim feel. It's fun on the go, which plays to the switch's strengths.

The game is factually misrepresented here. I feel that undermines the critical nature of the review, and my experience over the last two years with the series is night and day different. I first played this year's game on Xbox, and it was hard to play last year's game after that because this year's is flat out so much better. However I waited, and kept playing it all the way until the days before this year's game came to Switch.

I'm very happy to have the game! It's not the show, but it isn't trying to be. It's a great in-between game for those who don't have as much time, but still love baseball and want to enjoy the current season and teams.
It's hard to master and I'm confident I'll put 30-50 hours into it this year and I'll enjoy that time.

If you like baseball, this year's game is worth trying. Last year's is not a good game. The difference between the two is huge.

Re: Review: R.B.I. Baseball 18 (Switch)

cyrus_zuo

@BulbasaurusRex honestly there is so much incorrect information in the review it is hard to list it all.

From pitching, where there is at least 3 pitches, not the two in the review, to hitting, where you can control whether you loft the ball or hit it down, not just bunny or swing away, the reviews description indicates they didn't know the game very well or the previous version. Don't even get me started on the fielding comments.

Having hitters hitting 200 in my case is a matter of me learning the game and not having great hitters . A couple of MLB teams can relate!

The game isn't amazing, but the review isn't either. I think the review will make people miss out on something some of them would have enjoyed.

Re: Review: R.B.I. Baseball 18 (Switch)

cyrus_zuo

@LinktotheFuture - I'd love a motion controlled hr Derby. But then I like the occasional sprinkling of motion controls. Baseball on WiiU had fun motion controls catching the ball with the pad.

Re: Review: R.B.I. Baseball 18 (Switch)

cyrus_zuo

@LinktotheFuture I've only played that mode a couple of times, so I don't remember, but I don't think so. I was disappointed I didn't see a way to pick the hitters I wanted. I've primary played franchise mode.

Re: Review: R.B.I. Baseball 18 (Switch)

cyrus_zuo

COULD NOT DISAGREE MORE.

I played a bunch of 2017 & 2018, and if you see them as the same I believe you didn't play them. Honestly.

My 13 year old son walking by me playing 2018 said "boy, the graphics are a lot better aren't they!"

That's one quote, I have more.
I think this review is hugely biased to the point of missing obvious changes. Really if you think it is visually the same you are just flat out scientifically wrong.

Ok... Trying to calm down now...

The game play is also a new. Having played a bunch of games in both last and this year's I can say getting and pitching is quite different.
I'm getting a lot less hits, more home runs, less strikeouts, harder pitching, different Fielding.

Across the board it's clear the engine under the game is dramatically changed.

I went well over well playing the old version to the new, which made the changes super obvious, and for many of them I'm still adjusting.

I had worked up to medium in the old one, and I won 60% of my games. On the new one I dropped back to easy after a couple of games and am still losing half of my games on easy.

The reasons why are hitting and pitching changed.
It is harder to get a hit. Easier for the computer to get a hit.
Whereas before my whole team was hitting over .400, no one on my team is hitting that now. Many are hovering just above two hundred.
Yet I'm hitting, and giving up more homers.
The positioning had changed, which has led to missed balls in play, but I'll figure that out.

In the end, it is an easy to pick up baseball game.
It feels better than last year when you hit the ball, and I love that fact.
It looks worlds better than last year's game, and I love that.
It is limited in options, which I don't love.
It is limited in skill, which I don't love (it's NOT NBA 2K!)

Overall though, it's a fun baseball game and a great, read that again, GREAT upgrade over last year.
Overall it's probably in the 6-7 range out of 10, the 4 and misinformation in this review are biased and should be ignored if you like baseball.
If you love baseball, get the show.
Otherwise I could list a host of Baseball games worse than this including the 2k series and everything in the DS, GBA, and Wii (maybe power prows was better than this actually... But it had its own problems, more different than better)
