Update [Tue 11th Aug, 2020 09:15 BST]: It's official: Oceanhorn 2: Knights of the Lost Realm is coming to Switch this fall.
Heikki Repo, Creative Director of Cornfox & Brothers, had this to say:
Oceanhorn 2: Knights of the Lost Realm is a game made by Nintendo fans, for Nintendo fans. We’ve been able to create something new from the strong background that we established with our previous game, Oceanhorn: Monster of Uncharted Seas, and Oceanhorn 2 is our love letter to the games that we grew up with, combining that beloved nostalgia with exciting new mechanics to give it an original spin.
Original Story [Thu 25th Jun, 2020 10:30 BST]: Cornfox & Brothers Oceanhorn: Monster of Uncharted Seas has already been pretty successful on smartphones and the Switch, and when the developer announced it was creating a sequel, fans were understandably keen.
However, Oceanhorn 2: Knights of the Lost Realm has been exclusive to Apple Arcade for a while – it was one of the key titles which launched the subscription-based service – which means that Switch-owning fans have been locked out.
It sounds like that is about to change, however. In a newsletter sent out by Cornfox & Brothers, it is strongly hinted that the game will be coming to Switch soon:
It's been a long time since Hero took a holiday, and on August 11th, we're sending him off to Kyoto to relax and meet some friends. What will he do there? Well, he's keeping things under wraps, but rumor has it that they're planning a surprise.
While many have criticised the series for cloning the Zelda experience, we're rather fond of Oceanhorn, and we'll be interested to see how the sequel shapes ups with proper, physical controls on Switch. Let us know if you feel the same way by posting a comment.
Thanks to gauthieryannick for the tip!

I have very much enjoyed it on my iPhone with 8BitDo SN30 Pro+ (what a mouthful) with a phone grip. Might double dip if it comes to Switch, as I'm building a hefty library with most of the titles to be played in "not-so-distant" future
Should i just get this for ios or wait for switch release.
« With proper physical control » Aren’t all Apple Arcade compatible with controller? I seems to recall that since the launch of IOS 13 controller such as the PS4 one and the Xbox one are also compatible with every Apple device and even Apple TV...
@Rpg-lover The thing is you can’t get it on iOS, it’s only part of the subscriptions service... that said you can try the service for free and even use it with game pad that now sync with iOS. Person ally I see no downside in trying it this way and since I think one month of the service is like 5$ you can likely beat it for much less than on switch.
It will be interesting to see the graphics comparison between the latest iPhone and the Switch.
Our phones must be more powerful nowadays? I mean a £279 Switch vs a £1,100 iPhone is a big difference in price after all.
@Anti-Matter sorry man, but not everything is a BotW clone.
Ocean Horn is clearly a Zelda tribute (the designers said that from the outset of the first game). The other two you mentioned are not.
Effie is more of an old school 3D similar time the likes of Spyro or Knack.
A Knights Tale is more akin to storytelling/point and click puzzle solving game. And it’s a remake of an older game that came out before BotW.
You might mean A Knight’s Quest, which is similar to other 3D Action adventure games. It has big boss fights and things but it’s not a BotW clone. Maybe takes cues from Zelda though in some areas, but also from many, many other games.
@RunGMhx It's not the default control method though. I don't have any figures but I'd imagine the amount of Apple Arcade users who have physical controllers is tiny. Physical controls will be standard on Switch.
@RunGMhx thanks for the info, much appreciated.
@Kienda
Oh my gosh...
I mistyped A Knight's Tale that supposed to be A Knight's Quest. 😆
looks good, struggled to enjoy first 1. Will keep an eye out for this.
I'd love it, the game looks fantastic, honestly. Maybe has its flaws regarding gameplay and such, but the overall appearance can't be better for me XD
The first one was one of the first games I got on the switch and quite enjoyed it.
Was hoping the sequel would come to switch
I would rather wait for Nintendo release their back catalogue of Zelda games, such as Windwaker and skyward sword. Playing a "clone" or "homage" of games that I would much rather be playing is not my thing.
This was really dull for me.
Both Oceanhorn games are beyond dreadful. I somehow pushed myself to finish both, and they a total waste of time.
Any game that uses the term 'love letter' in its marketing gets an instant hate from me.
Graphically this looks nice, but I'm not sure about there's enough subtlety in the animation.
I've got the first one physically for Switch and honestly it wasn't that good. I'll wait for reviews on this one.
Looks nice but somewhat clunky nonetheless.
@Moon
Same here
why do the graphics on an iphone look better than literally any game on the Switch?
I enjoyed the first game. The second looks a massive improvement
There's nothing wrong with Zelda clones. Many of them best the series they take inspiration from: Okami was a much better game than Twilight Princess (which was still good) and maybe it's my inner Sega fanboy but I still maintain Story of Thor and the highly underrated Soleil/Crusader of Centy are both better than Link to the Past.
Awesome, i enjoyed the first, and the 2nd looks like it takes it up a notch, much in the same way ALTTP did to Zelda 1. Cant wait to play it.
Whether or not it's a Zelda clone, it is definitely not a BoTW clone. If anything, it looks more like traditional 3d Zelda games to me (Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask).
@gcunit I don't know. Love letters are nice. "Inspired by" is the watchword for me. It's a synonym for "please don't sue us, it's not really a clone."
Apple realizes their platform is tiny in comparison to dedicated hardware. That is what I read from this lol. Apple devices are garbo anyways and you way overpay for literally weaker hardware.
Nice! I really liked what I saw from the trailer, and I hope it runs that well including keeping most of the graphic fidelity for the port on Nintendo Switch. If so, I'm down!
@Jokerwolf from your comment you seem to think Apple is some how responsible for it being able to released on other systems. They didn't have anything to do with developing or publishing the game and only had a limited time exclusive contact for the game to be on their platform so it has nothing to do with Apple coming to any kind of conclusion.
Sounds more like they are sending just the hero and not the whole game. A new smash bros character 😒
@Zenszulu No but it is on apple arcade now, Shantae was the same way and were both released exclusive to Apple arcade and I am guessing they were not making the money they wanted to and are pushing to release where they will make some good $$. As for the hardware part of my comment that is a hard fact.
@Jokerwolf it isn't about if they were making money they are likely just limited time exclusive deals and once they expire they are free to release them on other systems. Being on a subscription service means the publisher would have got paid up front for the length of time to be on the service the game itself does not generate money on it's own but the service does. So the game would have made the exact same amount of money if everyone who as the service played it or if no one who had the service played it.
I think any game that takes inspiration from or even "clones" LoZ games should be praised for it! We need more games like BotW.
I honestly don't care if a game is a "rip-off" if it's good. I think Genshin Impact looks pretty interesting and when Overwatch came out a lot of people compared it to TF2. But on the other hand, I played the demo for the first Oceanhorn and I did not enjoy it.
I tried this on Apple Arcade but found it pretty boring and generally uninteresting. Some may call it a BotW clone but it's nothing like it. A game like this looks interesting in the mobile world because there aren't many like it, but on consoles there's far better options to play.
@Zenszulu The devs don't make near as much money on a subscription model like this as they would selling individually. It just guarantees them a lump sum of money up front but would pale in comparison to individual sales unless they really wanted something to stay on there permanently.
@Jokerwolf I just said that in different words that is why it would be a limited time exclusive before freeing them up to release it elsewhere. So to sum it up it was nothing to do with Apple or how much money it was making it is more they signed up and accepted guaranteed money to release it exclusively more than likely to help fund the remainder of the development costs.
@Zenszulu Ya I looked into it more and most of the big games were early access so it must have helped them out in some way.
This makes me very happy. The first Oceanhorn was really good, and way better on Switch than iOS cuz of the joysticks. It was a Zelda clone, but a really really really well done one
Cornfox is basically like 3 guys, and they quality they turn out is very high. I've been waiting for this to come to Switch for over a year
I completed the first Oceanhorn 100% on Switch & really enjoyed it. Looking forward to this one.
about bloody time!
Happy this is finally coming to Switch. I have the first one and enjoyed it. In fact, FDG Entertainment has been releasing solid games in the last few years. Monster Boy & The Curse Kingdom was an absolute joy to play; Blossom's Tales was fun trip through nostalgia and Venture Kid was a nice attempt at Mega Man.
Oh looks really cool tho! What does it cost?
Other than the slightly rigid combat and enemy animations to damage, it looks fairly solid.
This is super exciting! Loved the first one. Almost did Apple Arcade for this game. Now I don't have to.
"However, Oceanhorn 2: Knights of the Lost Realm has been exclusive to Apple Arcade for a while – it was one of the key titles which launched the subscription-based service – which means that Switch-owning fans have been locked out."
I didn't realize that no Switch owner has an Apple device.
This scuffed bootleg Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild clone doesn't stand a chance.
The two games of the series are definitely one of the better Zelda inspired games out there.
@Anti-Matter BOTW is an Elder Scrolls clone.
@Scottwood101 iPhone as a WAAY more poweful CPU & GPU. Current iPhone (12) has a more powerful chip than the XBOX ONE X and PS4 Pro. It also costs around 4 Switches.
You will notice how well games run when Apple releases their A14 macs at the end of the year.
@sanderev Th...there's an iPhone 12?? O_O
Very different to the first game but think I would enjoy this one. It's just a trailer though so look forward to seeing more of the game. Reminds me a little of Dragon Quest.
Clone or not, let it come! More clones are welcom if done right.
@Kienda
An iphone should look much nicer than the Switch. Apple's chips are the best ARM chips in the business.
Now throttling may be a problem with an iphone but an ipad would take care of that issue. And even throttled it may still be more powerful than the dusty tegra.
@Kienda phones are more expensive but doesn't mean they are better. The switch is a dedicated gaming machine to where phones are a all around device so it is given that they will cost more. That's no different than a Xbox one costing more because it can actually play 4k unlike the ps4s and it can also play 4k movies to where the PS4 will not.
@sword_9mm honestly it will not look any different. With that size of a screen the picture will be basically the same. Any difference will come from what all is ported over and what isn't.
@Dirty0814 yeah, I think this is why it will be interesting to compare the two games and see how similar/far apart the devices are for gaming.
It could mean we see fully fledged console games from the current generation on mobile at some point.
Looks like a nice game to play
Gonna be honest, the first game bored the piss out of me. But this one? I think it looks fantastic! Sign me up.
Looks like a huge improvement to the first one. Was one of my early switch games and I had to push myself to finish it. The story and controlls were meeeh. To be honest, this is the game that made think twice before buying a game that's praised as "Zelda like" because it was nothing like Zelda. It's like saying a Dacia Car is a Loveletter to a Ferrari, just because it has for wheels and can drive...
Wasn't it confirmed back in 2017? That game looked stunning on iOS by the way, I guess that's the result of developing for just one mobile platform. I wonder how it'll look on Switch, then! I don't care if it looks too much like Zelda (and not necessarily much, really), the more TLoZ-like games on Switch, the better.
I'm totally sold on this one! It has a Mana + Zelda feeling I absolutely love. Bring it on!
@RadioHedgeFund Okami has a ton of unique stuff going for it. I mean, is it a coincidence that the main character of this game looks a lot like Link from BOTW? Nah, definitely not. They could've tried something more unique at least.
Seeing this announcement gets me jonesing for Windwaker on switch or skyward sword, twilight princess, a link between worlds, phantom hourglass, minish cap, major mask, a whole lot of other Zelda games too, but no, I don't want to play Zelda-like tribute games on my official flagship Nintendo console. Ironic that I can play a lot of these official games on my phone unofficially, but now a phone-game is officially coming to Switch.
Couldn't they at least come up with a more original design for the protagonist?? He literally looks like a bootleg botw Link. The graphics look pretty though, I'll give it that.
@Moistnado So you prefer to replay games you have already finished, instead of playing new games? Ahm, alright XD
Looks a lot better than the first one
@RadioHedgeFund interesting as I think Okami is a bit rubbish
Why does everyone has to copy btow to make their games first Chinese ppl and now Western people too
It was barely playable on Ipad pro 10.5 2017
The controls were horrible without controller and there’s a bit of stuttering. Stupid enough you can not sync switch controllers to Apple devices
YES!!! 😀👏🏼🥳
(Yes thats all i can say)
i was LITERALLY hoping yeaster that the studio could release it sometime soon for the switch its still not zelda but its realy worth playing during the wait
@RadioHedgeFund What system were those last 2 released on?
Excellent news. Really enjoyed the first one but this looks to blow it out of the water.
Wow! and people complain about genshin copying zelda
This will be a day one buy for me. Looks Nice, gives me a Fable vibe.
Not a fan of the first One. This looks much better but it is nonetheless a mobile port...
As I'm pretty sure i said on the earlier post, please bring this to physical, especially as a compilation of both games.
Looks nice but they really need to up their trailer game. The music is a bit slow and boring, but not slow and boring enough to be good, and the title has KNIGHTS in it but the trailer only has Notlink in it. Least they could do is put him in some Notancient armor.
Will keep it in mind. If somehow Nintneod releases Zelda BotW 2 with only 2 months notice like they did Paper Mario, say a Direct in September w/ the game in late November or early December, sales on this are gonna suffer.
Though it's Nintneod and Zelda so they'll probably have a year to themselves. Unless any of those other games that resemble this come to Switch, last Sony Playstation State of Play had 3 of them I think. Oh and Ubisoft's "Gods & Monsters" which had a February release date before disappearing into the void. Platinum may resurrect Scalebound on Switch before we see that one.
This looks ace, I can see the Zelda inspiration but it looks good enough on its own merit
So this is not an RPG? It looks like BOTW and Dragon Quest but a standard 3D adventure,. If so I may get this. I like the look of the artwork and I would like to see more game-play though.
@gauthieryannick I agree, no one moaned about laytons mystery journey being on mobile first
Looks pretty, but Idk how it will really turn out. I thought the first game got fairly middling reviews...
I tried to get into to Oceanhorn one. I did buy it on iTunes because it was like half the price of the Switch port and I do have an Apple TV with one of those Steelseries controllers. It just felt a bit too shallow, I don't know it just didn't click with me. I'm sure I could play it if I didn't have a Switch with a superior Zelda game on the shelf to play instead.
When I saw this game during Apple's announcement of Apple Arcade I thought it was Nintendo's Zelda game that was rumoured they were devoting for mobile for moment. It really did look very Breath of the Wild.
Nice, I'll add that to the day 1 list
It honestly feels more like the Mana series to me than Zelda. The first game was a Zelda clon, that's for sure, but this one has a pretty unique feeling, imo... Except for the clothes lol
The oceanhorn 1 art style characters repelled me, but this looks quite inviting. Very interested in oceanhorn 2.
I also didn't like the first one, the combat and controls were not compelling.
I'm hoping for a demo of this on switch.
It looks great, but do did the first one.
Visuals aren't enough for me, I look for an amazing experience, and it's hard for companies to match up with Nintendo when it comes to amazing experiences.
Zelda "clone" statements definitely seem apt (true for the first Oceanhorn game as well). However, Zelda-style action-adventure games are easily my favorite genre, so I'm in (unless the performance is atrocious).
While it might be fun (and the original too), its still a shameless copy. For example: The forest looks copied straight from Skyward sword!
I didn't like the first one. You could feel the mobile port literally everywhere. I had to push myself to finish it and all in all I consider it a waste of time...
Good to hear it's coming. Figured it would at some point. I have no idea how Apple's gaming deal is going but I didn't really want it to play this.
I got Breath of the Wild + Skyward Sword from this game. Will keep an eye!
I’m glad they dropped the stupid exclusivity restriction. Apple Arcade was already dead on arrival.
this must be a sign of good things to come ....right?
@gauthieryannick it was not a waste of time because it feels.like.mobole, bit because the overall experience was not great. I didn't like the story, the narrative and so on. Especially the comparison to Zelda made me expect too much. At that time I paid 15€ for the Switch version which is way to much for this mediocre game. So for me, personally, a waste of time!
@rushiosan I think they still have the exclusive deal. It's just that they can't go on other mobile platforms. But they can go to other consoles.
I don't have it, but they have several cool games, more than a few have been posted to the Switch and we're reviewed well.
Getting this for sure. Can't wait
@the_beaver Yes, I do prefer replaying the real thing to less impressive imitations.
@Kienda iOS games need to work on iPhone 8 and up. Also iOS does way more than games. The latest iPhones are way more powerful than Switch, but that won’t result in much better looking games because of the support for older devices and the nature of the OS. It is possible though.
Heh, forgot Apple Arcade was even a thing. Glad this is reaching a wider audience, I definitely dig the Zelda inspiration. Switch version is on my radar.
I'm interested, it looks great, and probably will be much more successful on Switch than on something I never even heard about. And is it just me, or does that gun in the screenshot look a lot like the solar gun from Boktai?
@Kienda you could always get iPhone SE for £420, which is powered by the same chip as £1100 iPhone 11 Pro.
@gauthieryannick I disagree. The problem with mobile games os not on the graphics department but with the Control scheme (it starts with touch controls in mind) and pacing. It is the opposite ANY mobile game has to prove me wrong
it's ok game.. the 1st that is. Hopefully they have learned from their mistake.. if I get a heartpiece I expect it's permanent, but removing it was just stupid. At least Legend of Zelda games makes it permanent. So in short you're not allowed to die if you want to keep that heartpiece. It resets a lot and also EXP points. and the level up didn't make much sense either.. it's hidden skill tree and you have no idea what you're getting. It's quite basic and I can't call it a real RPG game.. just hack/slash adventure with little upgrade, but don't expect power up like in real RPG. My expectations were a bit higher.
This looks more reminiscent of TP and SS than BotW. Which isn't a bad thing, if anything there's a bit of a hole in the market for that kind of game with Zelda going down the open-world route lately.
No thanks, I'll pass. Buying the first one was a mistake, I thought it was really boring.
@noswitchbutidc Story of Thor/Beyond Oasis and Soleil/Crusader of Centy were both released on the Mega Drive/Genesis. If you're into emulators I recommend checking them out.
Story of Thor has incredible graphics and a really good combat system (including finite-use weapons) and a magic system whereby hitting an element with your power armlet summons a fire/water/shadow/earth elemental to help fight/solve puzzles. They stay around for as long as your MP let you.
Soleil not only has a really good item/combat system based on whatever pair of animals you have equipped to follow you around (e.g. using the lion makes your sword turn to fire; using the butterfly lets you throw your sword and direct it; using the cheetah makes you run twice as fast etc) but it also has a really good story where the hero gets turned into a monster for part of the story and you see things from their point of view.
@RadioHedgeFund Thanks, will pirate them later. Also, what social sites are you on?
Thank you for making this a Switch console exclusive! For now at least...
I can't wait for its release to see how it holds up in Switch compared to the latest phones- to see if you were right about what you said in 2017 hehehe!
