Metalhead Software's Super Mega Baseball 3 arrives next week on Switch and we're working on a review for you at this very moment, but the developer has revealed that a post-launch mode called Custom Pennant Race will be released for free in "early Summer 2020".
This mode will build on the Pennant Race mode already in the game and enables players to organise private cross-platform Pennant Race. When the update hits up to 32 friends will be able to send out invites and participate - check out the trailer above for an overview.
As the name suggests, Custom Pennant Race will enable custom settings for competitive or casual play, and apparently came about thanks to feature requests from the Super Mega Baseball community. Here are some more details from the PR blurb about the upcoming game:
- Challenge your hand-eye coordination or relax and hit dingers with fluid gameplay that scales seamlessly from novice to beyond-expert levels of difficulty.
- Apply and refine your baseball instincts with a sophisticated baseball simulation featuring new pickoff and stealing mechanics, wild pitches/passed balls, designated hitters, and situational player traits.
- Take in the sights and sounds of 14 richly detailed ballparks, each featuring unique day, night and alternate lighting conditions.
- Guide an evolving team to greatness over multiple seasons in the all new Franchise mode featuring player development, aging, retirement and signing/releasing of free agents (1vCPU, 2vCPU, local or online).
- Compete online to win pennants and climb to higher divisions in the cross-platform Pennant Race mode (1v1, online only, controller only).
- Create your ideal league with a comprehensive customization suite that includes season length/structure, team names/uniforms/logos, and player names/appearance/attributes.
- Play or simulate any combination of games/teams in customized Seasons and Elimination brackets, solo or with friends (1vCPU, 2vCPU, 1v1, 2v1, 2v2, CPUvCPU, local or online).
Additionally, a Super Mega Baseball 2 Team Import tool should let users import their custom rosters from the previous game into the new one (this feature is also scheduled to come after launch).
Excited for this sequel? It launches on 13th May and we enjoyed the previous entry, so look out for our review of this one soon. Let us know your thoughts below.

I wonder if The Show 21 will launch on Switch as well as Xbox/PC. It’s looked the same since 2013 so it would be good for Switch to get a decent baseball game.
I love SMB 2 and this one looks like an upgrade in almost every aspect. Day 1 for me!
@nessisonett
SMB2 is a fantastic baseball simulation. Don't judge by the graphics.
You're not going to get real teams or players with this franchise but if you're truly interested in a very fun game instead of just logos, you'll probably enjoy it.
It's up there with Civ6, Darkest Dungeon, DOS2, Slay the Spire, and N++ at the top of my most played list.
I hope this one lives up to the hype.
I've never understand what do americans have with baseball. Is so lame as a sport...
@nessisonett I believe that was the intention when they announced they were going cross platform for 2021.
@Oppyz666
It appears you have a hard time with the language as well.
Here's to more understanding in your future. Cheers.
@nessisonett Heck yeah, I would buy The Show 21 in a second on Switch.
@KatiaManagan LOLOL savage, love it.
This will be a day 1 for me, and I'm very excited for it.
If you haven't played it, and you like baseball, you are missing out.
It's that pure and simple.
The new game will have a demo next week with unlimited online play, so, if you like baseball, do yourself a favor and play it (if you're not playing it already).
SMB2 had a huge fanbase, and after playing it, I get why.
I'll happily pick up The Show if it comes to Switch next year.
That said, SMB3 is a must-buy for me next week - it's the game I've been most excited for this year (so far!)
@SkullDragr I have played pretty much exclusively Animal Crossing and The Show 20 since lockdown started. I really should finish FF7R and Fire Emblem!
Looks good ... but not at that £35 price
@PBandSmelly they aren't making baseball games, they're too busy being blonde boyz doing what blonde boyz do
@popey1980 agreed. They don't have a major league license and it's still that price? I may have to wait for a sale.
@popey1980 Super mega baseball 2 was wonderful. If this game is as good it’s well worth £35. I would rather it was cheaper too but that’s just me being a tight so and so. You’ll get more than your money’s worth out of it if you like baseball 😀
@KatiaManagan kinda. I'm spanish and spanish is my mother tongue, so... expect some errors from someone who does not use english for nothing in his daily life.
@Oppyz666 Well, I assure you not all Americans like baseball.
Just curious what's your experience in watching a baseball game? Just on TV? Attended an actual game? Or maybe you've done both and just don't find the game appealing?
I can tell you from my own experience and what many have shared. It's a slog to sit and watch a baseball game on television (unless it's a playoff game or teams you have some vested interest in). But it's a whole different experience actually attending a game.
My all time favorite feature from a baseball game was the create a ballpark in MVP Baseball 2005 (not sure if it was any other edition). I would buy a decent baseball game if it had that mode in it or if it were part of a franchise mode
@Oppyz666
Yo entiendo. Estoy tratando aprender el espanol. Pero yo creo que pienso que yo no pienso lol. Futbol es divertido, y beisbol, y cricket...
Lo ciento para mi...tone?
I really dig the art style here. I saw on a youtube video that this will be $40-$50, which is a bit pricey but i may take the chance. Take care all.
The $60 CAD+ tax price a bit much for me since I hsve SMB2.
the additiona not dnough for me to justify the price.
@Oppyz666 yeah Baseball is like English. If you can't understand it, you won't enjoy it.
If you're going to have the audacity to poke fun at other countries sports, at least have the sense to speak coherent English or just say nothing at all.
@Razer I'm being incoherent, but you did undestand me, so... GG.
Btw, this only happens with me with baseball and a few other sports. American handegg i like it. It's really strategic. But baseball... Like cricket, or badminton, Korfball and a long etc: they are just plain stupid sports.
But hey, who am i? Just a stupid spaniard whose only way to improve his english skills are through websites. At least i try to learn and speak a third language (spanish and catalan being my other two).
@Oppyz666
Don't let the other commenters bother you. Your English may not be perfect, but we can understand you just fine.
As far as baseball, think of it this way - i suspect there is a good chance you are a big football/soccer fan. When a lot of Americans* don't even give it a chance because "it's SO boring!!", you probably shake your head and wonder "how can they not see how wonderful this game is??" It’s the same way for us diehard baseball fans.
(*a lot of Americans, but not me. I love me some futbol too. )
