Re: Review: Octopath Traveler (Switch)

VmprHntrD

As highly rated as this is, I can't trust it because it's still Square-Enix. They've gone down a road since Final Fantasy 10(late game) in most their RPGs I loathe — the simon says angle of play. What's this? Various random few monsters and most/all bosses have a pattern, a pea brained narrow minded pattern. You must use the right skills, have the right jobs suited up, and take the right turn at the right time, or you basically get pounded into or nearly into dust by the enemy in a blow. It's a rigid horrid way to sell strategy guides at $30 a pop to line their pockets.

I can't stand JRPGs that do this, stifling creativity to attack a problem from multiple angles. Some may be more efficient, others may suck and drag out the battle, but still work. S-E doesn't allow that level of creativity anymore unless you want to well over-level for a space making for a lot of mindless grinding. The 2 Bravely 3DS games did this, and on DS while FF3 didn't suffer of it FF4 was ruined by it entirely.

Has anyone actually played this yet to know if they're forcing the narrow minded path to combat or allowing you to enjoy the game by your own choices?

Re: Square Enix’s Business Division 8 Is Working On An Action RPG For Switch

VmprHntrD

What if they being as they are at SE they very well could be just taking their hugely popular phone games and moving them to Switch. It would make a lot of sense since they tend to struggle with budgets. Take something finished, convert and release. They have that trilogy of phone RPGs, then Exvius, and all those DS and SNES/GBA style conversions of old FF and DQ titles too. Money in the bank right there in physical or not formats as the primary work is already finished anyway.

Re: Reggie Reveals Metroid Prime 4 Development Is "Proceeding Well"

VmprHntrD

I think it would be more wise on the classic front to work on the Game Boy and the Game Boy Color. The N64 library is very limited, and even now from scratch working up a N64 controller for a mini device would be expensive. The system was multiplayer centric quite a bit, so it would be suicide not to have 2 in the box. Between the games they can't release from Rare and other dead studios and their own, they'd be hard pressed to have 20 of value there, and throw in 2 controllers it would be a $100 mini at least. It would be a harder pill to sell than the last two.

A Game Boy though you have hundreds of quality games from any party to pull from to the point you could even make it take expansion multi-carts to just being lame like atgames (and others) and selling added full volume closed devices too.

Re: Rumour: Nintendo Is Banning Online Features For Suspected Pirated Game Carts

VmprHntrD

It's still a rumor at this point, but if it is true I'd have to side with Nintendo. If those holier than thou 'free the information' types weren't pulling the crap they were allowing carte blance warez activity on the system these steps would never have been taken. Even if Tegra isn't able to be locked down, those unique codes they can really screw with people over since it's a generated one per game cartridge. Any suffering by the innocent which even I could fall victim to as I get enough used is an acceptable loss due to bad actors causing them harm.

Re: Exploring The Legalities Of Sony's Fortnite Restrictions On Nintendo Switch

VmprHntrD

I'd have to wonder if Epic could just threaten to cut off Sony from fortnite access as soon as contractually possible. Or perhaps some other form of legalized blackmail to get them to behave may work. Perhaps not directly but a future Epic game could get a 30day delay for release after PC Nintendo, etc. Let them suffer a lack of wallet lining sales by so many impatient gamers buying on another format. The only way Sony can listen is losing money, money loss would make them react.

Re: Dragon Quest XI Needs "Many Things" To Be Taken Care Of Before Arriving On Switch

VmprHntrD

May be it is incompetence here to a degree. Look at what they fumbled so hard with on DQ Heroes 1+2 for the Switch that never left Japan. They may just not have a good clue how to program for it properly which would seem strange given the Android hardware/OS style bones it has. The PS4, the 3DS, and the rest aren't foreign concepts it it should in theory not be hard to do but something is screwing them up they can't seemingly figure out in a timely fashion. Perhaps those comments about Panic Button aren't too far off the mark if they can take an iDtech engine game as they have and pull off so much though don't think S-E would go for it as they're too prideful to accept that kind of help. They'd likely kill it first.

Re: Release Window Between Consoles And Switch "Shrinking All The Time" Says Panic Button Boss

VmprHntrD

They should and shouldn't be considered equals. The hardware is different, but the core engines can be used on both. By the fact the Switch is doing consistently well as it is and hasn't flatlined in a year like the failed WiiU basically spells out it will have to get the games the others do in a shorter window if not the same time. With a base so big and growing as a third party marketing alone shows you would be ruining your own profitability by ignoring such a big chunk. Going by last gen terms it would be like saying well who needs PS3 we can just make HD games for the other guy and that's good enough. Sure that may work for a game or two, but in the big picture it's setting yourself up for disaster losing the potential of hundreds of thousands if not millions in sold units. A wide gap means with pea like attention spans people buying someone else's game and not yours because you were late to the party.

Re: Melee Player 'Hungrybox' Backs EON GameCube HDMI Adapter

VmprHntrD

@GravyThief You're a little misinformed if you're comparing the GC at 480p on a HDMI using old style component cables in saying it's all gash as you put it. I'm using a HDMI TV that's in the lower/mid 30s in size and the games look remarkably better, and those that run in 480p (forced or by design) look stunning. The level of detail it pulls out compared to those expensive component cables are very clear cut and obvious. You might not want to dismiss it so easily as the better made stuff 1st and 3rd party has a more WiiU in quality level of clarity and detail.

Re: Melee Player 'Hungrybox' Backs EON GameCube HDMI Adapter

VmprHntrD

The EON device is the ZeldaXPro one, they're just charging $50 more for that prettier piece of colorized and cut 3D printed plastic.

If the review pretty much says anything more I'd call bs on it if it's not much of a word for word repeat. Weird that they need to justify that price hike with a gaming ambassador.

I own the ZeldaXPro device that came out first, both using years of publicly developed work to produce what is done there and it's absolutely stunning how well it performs. I can't suggest it highly enough to anyone using a HDMI tv.

Re: Wolfenstein II Switch File Size Revealed, And It's Much Bigger Than We Were Originally Told

VmprHntrD

@kobashi100 You don't, he's trolling or clueless. The Switch effectively is basically the Shield Tablet (I have it) and there's no room in there for a HDD let alone a SSD either so you're stuck with a small chip for what's in there, and like the Shield the same kind of slide loader for a microSD card. If Nintendo wanted to do anything as a higher tiered combo pack, they'd include a larger capacity MicroSD card in the box (say like 64GB as 128 probably would be a bit much as a pack in currently.)

Re: Wolfenstein II Switch File Size Revealed, And It's Much Bigger Than We Were Originally Told

VmprHntrD

@nab1 Given the choice I'd pay $5-10 more for the larger card. I'm not sure what a 32 costs, but it has been used by Square-Enix for Dragon Quest Heroes 1+2 in Japan so they do exist. They didn't raise the price on that one either to go that large, though being a port it probably cost less to develop in some respects.

I've always been cool with the Switch tax as some call it if it gets me the full game on physical media. I understand that in the current development market for parts the 8GB chip is compared in value to burning a PS4/XB1 blu ray disc, though I doubt with costs a 32GB one is 4x that, probably more but not dramatically so.

Re: Review: Samurai Shodown III (Switch eShop / Neo Geo)

VmprHntrD

I'll have to call BS on that score, a step back? SS2 was the annoying one after the first which was a fantastic start, may have had more characters but also some more balancing issues too. SS3 took the game in a nice good new direction, harder game, more tactical, and a nice variation of moves along with the option of slash and bust mode. The fact they mixed up the roster well and trimmed it a little to a wiser more refined amount was a good call for variation and balanced play.

I put plenty of time into the first 3 games, slightly compared on 4. SS2 I had extra time off arcade doing the old Windows9X port of it too. It's my least favorite while #3 I felt was a good height to the games I have touched (never did #5.)

Your own paragraphs #2 and #5 summarize why this game does not in any means deserve the 6 rating. I feel that whining complaint leading off the last review paragraph sums up the score. Waaaa it's too hard, damn skippy it is. It makes the previous two games seem a notably easier. If it's that bad, turn it down a notch. I only played this game on the arcade and still have to date as I own it again (arcade, not switch.) I know a re-review can't be done, but it would be best to find a complainer about difficulty being too much (it's not) doing something easier to get a fair evaluation.

Re: Capcom Says Ultra Street Fighter II And Monster Hunter XX Enjoyed Hit Status

VmprHntrD

I bought USF2, barely use it unless the mood is there. I was going to buy more, but they've gone down the toilet of half releases with the rest being a download at my addition expense of a memory card for a digital rental style time period. Perhaps RE1+2 was too big given current media, but in the case of the Mega Man stuff where they went with a 1GB chip instead of a 2GB chip is just being slimy when an 8GB is known to be on par with a PS4 blu ray mastering cost. I can't and won't support those tactics. I like supporting third parties, one's that don't abuse the customer base like Bethesda and others so far have done.

Re: EA Just Had A Record-Breaking Year Despite A Decline In Physical Sales

VmprHntrD

Basically just numbers backing up that their shady workings of a heap of pre-planned left out DLC from games for additional charges, on top of honest DLC that comes later, combined also with their loot box shenanigans equals vastly more digital profit. They just show they can milk stuff very well while releasing less new content and less new physical stuff as well.

Re: The Virtual Console Isn't Coming To Switch, Nintendo Confirms

VmprHntrD

Very happy it's dead. It's better off leaving the old releases to the companies that control them. Are your memories so short remembering how Nintendo would release more and more sad looking pittances of titles compared to how the Wii blew them out a decade ago? Do we really need them taking a good cut on every old game someone else wants out there on their release terms to buy again and again from Wii, WiiU and 3DS? Get over it. It's a good thing. ACA/Hamster have shown they can do the stuff far better justice with Nintendo, IREM and mainly Neo-Geo games so far.

Re: Nintendo Switch Online Finally Revealed: Cloud Saves, NES Games And Pricing Confirmed

VmprHntrD

You know I like it, and the NES stuff is just a nice perk too. The pricing is beyond fair at whatever tier. I know it's not popular around here, but good riddance to the virtual console. If a company wants to put out a game, let them do it on their own terms as Hamster/ACA does with a few entities. Let them collect and manage it. Nintendo clearly will do the same with their own stuff as they see fit. One less reason to feel compelled to buy the same game yet again after the Wii, WiiU and 3DS.

Re: Rumour: Pokémon Switch's Release Date Could Be As Early As November This Year

VmprHntrD

I'd like to know a lot more. Always wanted a crack at a console level Pokemon to see how it would work out.

I've avoided the series for years as it got so so stale and then Pokemon X dragged out so bland and badly I blew it off. I happened across Ultra Sun for $20 within the last week and I'm oddly very much enjoying the big overhaul it got with the big story mode and direction it pushes like a JRPG would do. This may make me really want to know more about this Switch game as it's interesting again to me. My age shows but I was there from the start with Red but really best enjoyed Yellow, and later FIreRed and somewhat SoulSilver on DS too. I do have Crystal but never got to it sadly.

Re: There's Trouble In Paradise As Nintendo Adds Loot Boxes To Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp

VmprHntrD

@ricklongo In principle I agree, but that's the addicts fault lacking the self control to stop spending their money on harmful stuff, whether it's being a game whale, to slot machines, to liquor, or a crack habit. It's their job to get the help, no one else can help them without their own will to stop or it continues. Cutting off the source would just have them search for another.

Re: SNK Is Releasing A "Neo Geo Classic Edition" To Mark Its 40th Anniversary

VmprHntrD

All this petty childishness about ATGames needs to just stop. While it was a very valid reason to hate them as Sega fans for a better part of a decade over that retched FireCore garbage emulator, the HD system from last year was a huge step in the right direction. A rep of theirs who posts daily on AtariAge the other day stated they've taken it yet a step further and have a better emulator yet, guessing from the comment a very well established solid emulator they're licensing, for the 2018 model later this year. This package should be the same as the on the Japanese are receiving in their mini console news days ago too.

Given the semi-similar nature of the core NeoGeo parts (Motorola 68000 processor) here I would imagine it may very well be them yet again on this too. That thread linked by AtariBoy a moment ago above me says as much as I just wrote here.

Re: Hardware Review: GameCube HDMI Adapter - GC Video Plug 'n Play 3.0

VmprHntrD

I'm surprised at all the whining over the $100 price tag. Have you looked up what those Nintendo only made inferior component cables go for? $300 is a fair guess and can be more. If you're not stuck on a CRT still, and with the realization that pre-HDMI jacks are being removed now (component, composite, and mostly already s-video) it's a no brainer to pick it up. Some trolls have fancier casing and charge $50 higher for the same internals.

HD remasters are nice, but ultra limited in the scope of the total library. Here you're getting a pure clean no-lag signal. Your choices outside of sticking to CRT are pretty limited to how much you want to blow on a frameister, ossc, or some other rigging given your TV already doesn't have a crap set of internals causing some serious (over 30ms) display lag.

Re: Light Up Your Life With This Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition Pre-Order Bonus Lamp

VmprHntrD

@Yorumi Agreed over the years there have been probably a preorder item a year or two I've wanted, but not the game, or at least not paying like $100 for a $60 game and passing on it because I wasn't going to pay that much more for 1 say $10 item out of a box of a few extras I'd put away and never look at or ever use even once.

That rupee I'd buy that for my desk. There have been audio CDs, funny trophy desk toy items, the odd plushie or other thing I've given them (whoever them are) money for but it doesn't happen. Nintendo is really doing the right smart thing here. I have no interest in 'warriors' games but I'd buy the light.

Re: Dark Souls Remastered To Feature Improved Frame Rates In Blighttown

VmprHntrD

@electrolite77 Pretty much there has to be some reason to cry given the consoles, none often run at 60fps let alone a solid one too unlike the PC which handily can do so very easily. I've tested, helped work on games, reviewed them too in past jobs, and outside of a job gamed since the mid 80s at home. Certain stuff on certain platforms work perfectly fine for what they are, while others can handle a higher capability (like PC) without a loss. But there are walls of perception where it moves from what an eye can track into just that 6th sense of just 'feeling' something and that's where you get into the realm of just flinging bs.

Re: Dark Souls Remastered To Feature Improved Frame Rates In Blighttown

VmprHntrD

@electrolite77 Makes sense.

Love seeing the snobbish pc master race/console 60fps and up club getting all whiny over something very trivial. The problem isn't 30fps, it's smooth, the issue is any dips under that can truly be perceived by the eye. That's where you get into problems of not being able to respond right in time in cases.

Re: Dark Souls Remastered To Feature Improved Frame Rates In Blighttown

VmprHntrD

Don't get the confusion here unless it was edited by the time I saw this but it never said 60fps for Switch at all. It's clearly up there saying 30fps, and quoting as much: "The Switch version will also be, according to reports, locked at 30fps." 30fps is plenty enough, so tired of the grousing about 60fps as it's very irrelevant in most genres, and this slow plodding non FPS style game even more so. For those who do complain, not saying people here so much, stop whining like babies and consider two things important - this is a handheld, and Nintendo is getting honest 3rd party support that isn't halfassed since the Gamecube era, even more so blindly from the SNES period. It has been long time coming and way overdue.

Re: Hardware Review: The Hyperkin SupaBoy SFC Is A Portable SNES For Under £100

VmprHntrD

Hey reviewer — You said chipped games work, but how well? The 2nd version of the device (pre-S) some FX1 games like Star Fox and Stunt Race would reset after 5min, yet others worked. FX2 Yoshi was a graphical mess and unplayable, yet DOOM worked. SF Alpha 2 didn't run at all. SA1 games would rarely boot(security), but if you tricked it using a normal game, hold reset, swap the game with SA1, then depress reset they'd run. it was just straight up irregular and weird.

That along with a broken internal setup to the DPad I had to mod myself to work right helped me lose interest and sell it. I'd love to buy another but i'll need to know if it really is that better off, and go find a tear down around the DPad internals.

Re: Manticore Devs Issue Apology Following Last-Minute Delay On Switch

VmprHntrD

"Manticore's lead designer Patrick Imbusch has issued a statement on the delay, explaining why it didn't make it to the eShop" Umm where? I just seen an apology, not what got broken and needed to be fixed before release.

Also is this download only or will there be a physical release planned later? I loved the GOF2 game on my Android tablet.

I'm in agreement with Alex up above. The original couple games were astounding amongst a sea of crap back when GOF1 (and 2) came out. I may have played the original on an iPad2 I once had.

Re: Funimation Really Wants Goku To Join The Roster In Super Smash Bros

VmprHntrD

As fed up as I am with the very played out smash series even I'd be half tempted if Goku made the roster.

Entirely if they found a way to make it fun again like it last was with the Gamecube release. I don't like the online stuff, so with single player getting more and more boring, not even sure Goku would do it for me.
