Square Enix has recently posted a job listing in search of a project assistant for an upcoming Switch/PS4 action RPG.
The listing, which understandably refrains from going into too much detail, reveals that the position is at Square Enix's Business Division 8, the studio behind the PS4's Secret of Mana remake, Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius on smartphones, and Imperial SaGa on browser. The successful project assistant will be tasked with supporting the game's producer, as well as working on advertising duties for the project.
Business Division 8 has also worked on several smartphone ports in the past, including Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy Dimensions II, and a whole selection of Dragon Quest titles. Could we be on the verge of seeing a new Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy project heading over to Switch? Or will this be something new entirely? We'll have to wait and see.
As ever, we'd love to know your thoughts so let us know what you'd like to see Square Enix bring to the Switch in the comments below.

Dear, SquareEnix.
Please Remake FF V & FF VI Nicely in proper Chibi 3D Rendering + Voice acting + New FMV just like FF III & FF IV on mobile.
Also, please Port FF IX to Switch.
Just give Switch Secret of Mana Remake Collection!
Hardly their A-team😂
@Bunkerneath
I read the remake wasn't good. I'd be happier with a HD version of the seiken densetsu trilogy.
squeenix please... i need kingdom hearts on switch... please im dying
@Mr_Pepperami
I just confused.
Is Yoshitaka Amano still contribute his Artwork for SquareEnix after his departure ?
Yoshitaka Amano contributed his artwork for Fantasy Life 3DS logo, FF XV , etc.
@Anti-Matter he works freelance doesn’t he? So if Square paid him for new work I’d guess he would do it.
If Square Enix continues to put one-off RPG gems on Switch then I'll be very happy.
There's no point in forcing KH3 or FFXV to the Switch if high end graphics are what they're going for.
... hopefully this will be as promising as Octopath Traveller!
So a mobile port of Chrono Trigger?
@Dogorilla yeah, this. Honestly considering the type of games that do best on Nintendo consoles, the kingdom hearts series should absolutely be on it. They would sell so well. I for one would buy them all
Well hope we learn more soon. Still since it is an game coming to both switch and ps4 it can be literally anything.
Ps please be ff or kh game
Dear Square Enix,
Focus on FF VII remake please.
Cheers.
@Mr_Pepperami I don't really see why the main series KH games haven't been released on Nintendo consoles before. There were several spin-offs on the GBA, DS, and 3DS but never the main games, and as you say this is exactly the kind of thing Nintendo fans will buy. I just realised the action RPG this article talks about is coming to PS4 too so it can't be Kingdom Hearts, but they'd be mad not to release at least Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 (or 1.5 and 2.8 or whatever they hell they're called) on the Switch at some point.
I'm clearly not that up on Square Enix as at first I thought the game was called Business Division 8, which sounds like the most boring game ever.
KH 3?
@Dogorilla yeah considering any seeming exclusivity has lapsed as it’s coming into Xbox, Square would be crazy to not port the older ones onto the switch. There is a real hunger for good RPGs and with the Disney licence as well they would definitely shift. Fingers crossed as they are fantastic games.
Division 8.....my excitement deflated right at the start. Their whole roster of games doesn't seem to include the good ones (and includes one remake they butchered.)
OTOH, that hair is totally rad!! It's like Frank Zappa meets Yanni.
@Knuckles-Fajita Not only is that already a thing, the PC "port" of Chrono Trigger is actually the mobile one, which caused much ire.
@Haywired Nah man, Business Division 4 was the real low point in the series, but Business Division 6 marked a true revival, so I've got high hopes for this baby.
Well that list of games does not seem promising.
@Agramonte I do believe it's going to be a port, not their own original developed game.
Really sucks however that despite its success Switch is still treated as a "mobile" and "unimportant" platform.
@Anti-Matter I REALLY HOPE they do not re-make FFVI in Chibi form. I hate that style so much, and it's my favorite FF game. I really prefer classic sprites, I prefer something akin to the FFIV update on PSP where the sprites were updated to look a little better. Also I wouldn't mind if they did that and added the content that was added on the gameboy advance version of the game which is one of my favorite versions of it.
@dougphisig
Actually, i like 3D Chibi looking of FF IV Remake a lot than HD 2D Sprite of FF IV.
They are looked Alive in 3D Chibi Rendering.
FF VI Remake on Mobile still looked MEH as FF IV PSP in term of graphics in my opinion.
The reason i like Chibi looking RPG games because they look so Cute in Chibi form.
Miitopia, Fantasy Life, FF III NDS, Portal Knights are Great example of Nice looking Chibi RPG characters.
Why do people keep saying re-make? I played all of the 80's 90's era games on their respective console with exception of some that were never localized. How about new exclusive games for Switch or multi plat titles?
@Dogorilla I'm tempted to get them on PS4 but I just keep HOPING for a switch release.
@Dogorilla
KH:Dream Drop Distance was a mainline KH game for 3DS.
So it's an RPG about accountants?
@Pete41608 I was referring to the numbered entries as the main ones but yeah there is that.
Reboot xenogears plz
I hope it is not chibi or anime style I'd like to see more variety on the Switch... Never get sick of 16bit though.
Just give Geno his own RPG game. Have Mario and company show up as cameos.
Instant profits. You're welcome.
I'm curious, yet also slightly skeptical. SE has some very good games, but some of their porting efforts lately have been...divisive to say the least.
I appreciate that Square-Enix spent the resources to open a development division that focuses solely on Switch game development. I haven't seen the relationship between Nintendo and S-E be this cordial since the SNES-days.
What if they being as they are at SE they very well could be just taking their hugely popular phone games and moving them to Switch. It would make a lot of sense since they tend to struggle with budgets. Take something finished, convert and release. They have that trilogy of phone RPGs, then Exvius, and all those DS and SNES/GBA style conversions of old FF and DQ titles too. Money in the bank right there in physical or not formats as the primary work is already finished anyway.
The FIRST thing I thought about was the Mana series lol. I'll take the remake, or a port of Seiken Densetsu 3 preferably. Make it happen SE...
So basically: the mobile devision
Secret of Mana remake + Seiken Densetsu collection for western release plx!
Oh and, FFBE is awesome. Recommend people playing it!
@Varkster Yeah, looks like only thing they capable of.
Well, the Switch has proven it can sell Indies and 3rd party Budget games (29.99/39.99) in good numbers. I think publishers still waiting see how bigger games turn out.
@Agramonte The problem with selling big AAA third party games on Switch is that most Nintendo fans also have a gaming PC/laptop to buy these games on. I buy most of my third party games on Steam because it runs better and its simply cheaper.
If these same companies took the time to develop original ground-up games on the console OR made ports that come out with other versions for once - maybe we would see a difference.
I reeeeally want to see a Xenogears remake! But I'd settle for KH on Switch, I guess.
@Varkster Yep, I'm included in that bunch. I also not afraid of loosing my collection of games after each generation (well as long as Steam stays open).
I got NinoKuni2 and getting DQXI on PC. It is only $49 for Steam.
Looking forward to whatever Square-Enix brings to the table, and can't wait for Octopath Traveler in a few weeks. It's so close!
If SE really wants to impress me, they should make a new Theatrhythm Final Fantasy for Switch... and maybe remake Final Fantasy V and especially VI in the Octopath style!
