@Shepdawg1 Toys for Bob, about a month+ ago, went indie. They aren’t owned by MS, but they are supposedly in a deal with them to make a new Spyro (since Activision owns that IP, if I recall correctly).
That’s a lot of work they’re doing. I want to purchase this on Switch to support the devs, and to have a convenient way to play these games, but I already have the original releases on PC and am planning to get a Steam Deck later this year… Maybe once it has a decent sale.
@heisnbrg There are a lot of games that you can’t get for, your words, a “reasonable price.” Panzer Dragoon Saga, Magical Chase, Magic Knight Rayearth, to name a couple. Also, without emulation, you wouldn’t be able to “reasonably” play English-hacked Japan-only games (or any hack from one language to your native language).
I get what you’re trying to say, and if there is a way for me to pay Nintendo or the developers for access to a game, I do (I bought VC games on the prior consoles and have the NSO+EP sub on Switch), but there are so many games that don’t fit into what you’re describing. Also, your model isn’t sustainable. In 50 years should we still be trying to find old arcade parts to play arcade accurate versions of Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting? You might say these are fringe cases, but there are likely more people like this than you think. Not everyone is being stingy and deluded and to say so is painting with a broad brush.
Quite a few changes! Looks like it’ll make the game a tad easier in some spots. I stopped playing the game when I unlocked the challenges, which was about 18 hours in. Yet the way people here brag about Gold Stakes makes me want to redownload and test myself. 😅
I see the point that the author is trying to make, but if I’m scrolling down the eShop listing, I’m probably more likely to notice a game with an exclamation mark than not. That doesn’t mean I’ll be more interested, but when eShop listings are the equivalent of driving along a highway with constant billboards whizzing by, having yours stand out just a little bit is better than not. I’ll always remember the billboard on the interstate that said VASECTOMY. Am I more likely to get one because of that? No, but it caught my eye, as I’m sure it just did for a couple of people scrolling through these comments.
I will drop $5 on What They Don’t Sea to support Girls Make Games winners. The game literally has only one user review on Steam so I just feel kind of sad for them, also I like aquatic exploration games in general.
EDIT: And thank you for highlighting that one Alana; it certainly would have been lost in the shuffle otherwise.
@Ryu_Niiyama I can see how you interpreted it that way, and I could have pressed my initial comment better. Thanks for responding kindly, and no need for any apologies. 🙂
@Ryu_Niiyama Correct, but based off the gameplay videos I saw, I don’t think this will be have the variety this has. Punch-Out has blocking, ducks, sways, low-blows, high-blows, your special, the opponent’s special, etc.
I’m glad you’re excited for the game, and I hope it’s great, I’m just saying that I’ve watched enough gameplay to where I’m just voicing a concern about how if the gameplay does end up feeling shallow after a while, then I hope the story is engaging in a way to propel the player to the end. That’s all.
Does this concept really have enough depth to make it through so many “episodes” or however they’re framing this? The premise and setting is great, but unless the story itself is actually entertaining, I don’t have a lot of confidence. Fortunately, the game is out shockingly soon.
The reception to this release will certainly be interesting. I thought I knew my fair share of these “boomer shooters” since I grew up in that era (first PC game I owned was Doom), but I haven’t heard of this.
Also, boomer shooter is fun to say, but I always wince a little as I do.
Yu Suzuki and Making of Myst, as well as “The Story of SCUMM” would be really cool.
Honestly, anything in the Japanese realm would just be interesting to compare to their other works, simply because for a lot of these games from the early ‘90s and before, there was a lot of obfuscation on lead developers and contributors. So seeing how well DE could surmount that problem, plus the language barrier, would be an interesting benchmark for foreign works. It might be too soon, but a “Suda51: The Early Years” would be interesting, though a lot of work since a lot of those games are still not officially translated. Just the first thought though.
This does suck, especially for the 240. Glad Relic mostly landed on its feet, but the continued contraction following all the pandemic over-expansion due to the 0% interest at the time is just staggering at how prolonged this is.
It’s also kind of nuts to me that Sega just three months ago during the Game Awards basically put out a call to hire with their old-school franchise revitalization trailer, and now they’re laying so many off. I understand that one may not be affect another, but it’s still not a good look IMO.
I played Myst for the first time about a decade or so ago. I really enjoyed it, but I’m also older than most people here. Not everyone is down with a game that may be best played with a journal next to you, but I love piecing together puzzles and mysteries.
Seeing the island in ACNH definitely put a smile on my face as I waxed nostalgic.
To be clear, I played the original through GOG, IIRC.
Hope the move goes well Alana! Moving is one of the worst experiences everyone has to go through, so my condolences.
Glad Gonçalo is highlighting GCCX and the Switch compilation!

I’ve been struggling to “get into” stuff lately. I would break the shrinkwrap on Mameda no Bakeru, but I should also get back to Tales of Vesperia.
I’m not trying to spoil your fun Gavin, but have you tried focusing on a flush and straight focused build? Try leveling those kinds specifically and getting jokers related to building up mult w/ flushes and/or straights. I won my third attempt at the game (and every subsequent run) by doing so. There are probably smarter builds, but that’s what’s worked for me. I’m also honestly just kind of impressed by your determination. I like run-based games, but I don’t think I’d be able to stick with one for a month without winning. Best of luck.
@Diowine A game with no negatives does not mean the positives bring it to a 10. Reviews don’t typically “subtract from 10” as some people assume. Maybe @PJOReilly would like to comment more on this himself.
@FishyS Can’t speak for Nintendo of Europe, but according to most game reviewers I’ve listened to, if the developer plans to do a Day 1 patch, they usually inform the reviewer of that being the case and what that patch seeks to address. Of course, it’s up to the reviewer if they want to take the company at their word, but in most cases the issue you raise is addressed as developers clearly have an incentive to notify reviewers about anything that might make their product be cast in a more favorable light.
@johnedwin There are many multiplat games that don’t usurp CoD from the throne every year. I’m not trying to sneak in a political discussion either, I’m just saying that it’s impressive for a single-player only game to do so well.
Wow, Hogwarts’ staying power is really impressive for a single-player game. In fact, upon searching I found that it was the best-selling game worldwide for 2023, which is really impressive because since 2009 only two years haven’t had a CoD game be the top-seller (at least in the US).
This is really quite sad. Like others here, DBZ was my gateway to the world of anime in the ‘90s. I’m currently reading through one of his mangas now, so this will definitely color that experience the next time I pick up the manga.
Thanks for posting this again! It’s a good reminder that there still are some great games coming this year. Really looking forward to a lot of the Japanese titles coming out this year, plus Rift of the Necrodancer.
@Smth2024 Before someone starts a snide diatribe, some people prefer the feel of having a library and something nice to look at (like me), the ability to re-sell (also me), but it mostly comes from people feeling that their physical version will outlast the digital marketplace version in a sense. In 25 years from now, if you still have a functional Switch, it’s questionable as to whether you’ll be able to re-download these games, but if you have a functioning physical copy, it won’t be a question.
I prefer the convenience of digital in that regard, especially since I anticipate relocating internationally within the next couple years and don’t want more things to put in a crate, nor do I expect to be unable to play Switch games through some means in 25 years time (heck, you can play Switch games right now on computers), but everyone has their own preferences.
I guess it’s been long enough since SV that they could be doing another remake but we’re at the end of the Switch life cycle here. Unless it’s a surprise launch of this year, I would just expect the original GB releases to shore up on NSO.
In line with what I had expected. Even as someone who loves Kirby and other cute games, I’ll probably pass. If I had a child, I would consider it more, but as it stands, I’m good.
It’s really hard to overstate how much I would want Wind Walker and TP ports from the Wii U versions. I would also be very giddy if they fit in fact port XCX. It should not have stayed stranded on the Wii U.
Just as an FYI, this is not made by the same studio that did the Me and the Professor on Summer Vacation game. That was done primarily by Millennium Kitchen and some support studios. This is primarily being done by a different studio with the main director from MK acting merely as a supervisor on this project, hence why this one has some different vibes from that first game.
This is practically half of TfB’s total employee count. I know CTRumble stank, but these guys generally do good work. Hope those affected find new work soon and that this isn’t the end TfB’s non-COD endeavours.

@Axecon Both hardware sales figures and software sales figures are down year-over-year, as shown on slide #10 in the linked pdf from the article. The weakening of the yen is actually where about 2/3 of their increased sales come from according their 4th slide. The other 33 bn yen may be from TOTK’s higher price point and continued increase revenue from their mobile industry and other non-videogame revenue streams (as those were two major areas of growth).
I can’t keep track of how many layoffs or closures Embracer has done in the last six months. I hope everyone there has updated and polished their resume, because that ship keeps on sinking. Hope everyone affected these last few months have landed on their feet on way or another.
For those that care, this isn’t made by the same team that made the Crayon Shin-chan summer vacation game. This seems like development of the game is being done by h.a.n.d. who has made some decent stuff before. But Millennium Kitchen, known for their summer vacation games, don’t seem to have any involvement in this.
@LadyCharlie @Jireland92 Not pursuing sustainable business practices ends you up as the Embracer Group. An easy example of overlap after an acquisition would be HR. Every studio doesn’t need its own HR department, but Embracer didn’t do any downsizing after acquisitions and kept many of the studios’ departments (like HR) intact. You can find insider comments from people in those studios saying they thought the lack of streamlining was weird and inefficient and then Embracer’s desperate Saudi Arabia money falls through and you get two rounds of layoffs in the last three months.
I agree with you that generally speaking CEOs and companies are greedier than the average person (who is also greedy). I do not agree with the implication of your statement that a company can never do layoffs in pursuit of sustainable business practices.
EDIT: To be clear, I don’t believe that every person laid off here was in HR or PR or any other department that gets bloated upon a merger. I would wager some of these layoffs are for pure pursuit of profit and not just common sense business practices.
