That’s a crazy amount of money. Hope the studios that do so find it gets them their money’s worth if they’re a smaller studio who just need a little more exposure for their title.
The math isn't quite lining up. Not sure if Famitsu has missed some along the way, but Nintendo of Japan's Q4 records stated that the Japan total was over 34 million back by the end of March. https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2024/240507e.pdf#page=14
I believe I tried to get this to run on DosBOX unsuccessfully at one point. I might check this out on PC instead of Switch, depending on control schemes.
@DanijoEX-the-Pierrot As someone who has seen the 1951 movie, I can tell you that Carpenter did to that movie what Johnny Cash did to NIN’s “Hurt:” turn 💩 to gold. That 1951 movie is kind of just a generic late-night monster movie with none of what makes the ‘82 film unique.
Instead of watching the 1951 movie, you should read the excellent 1938 Campbell novella that inspired these films. It’s fewer than 100 pages and is definitely closer to what Carpenter did in spirit. Just my $0.02.
Anyway, what a surprising announcement. I’m curious to see how what QoL enchantments or changes this remaster will provide.
@obijuankanoobie I’m definitely the reverse on that. Whether I’d use the postcards or keep them, I’d want a high quality version of that, and an alternate art sleeve for something that will sit on my shelf with just the binding visible?… 🤷♀️
Not surprised by the circus show here in the comments.
My Japanese copy of TTYD arrived just the other day. I should get to it and thanks to this comment section, I should clearly pay special attention to all the dialogue surrounding Vivian to see what the original Japanese intention was for the character. Because, as a reminder, NoA did not make this game and Japan is still pretty unwelcoming to LGBT+ expression. I just want to see what author’s original intent was.
EDIT: I see the article did provide some context, but left some stuff out in the tweets cited. Regardless, it’s an interesting development.
A lot of these are interesting points. It may be fair to say that something enters into the “retro” space when a wave of games try to replicate the era. The amount of relatively successful RE1-esque survival horror games and collectathon platformers with that sharp, low-poly style out now firmly put the N64 and PS1 in the retro space, despite my lack of comfort in that fact.
It’ll be interesting to see in a few years if the market gives room for a wave of “small” Halo-esque FPSes and open world games that look like GTA3.
Tomba is great! I’ve already beaten it in English and Japanese and so I’ve no need for this remaster, but I think everyone should go in with an open mind on this unique platformer.
@Daniel36 In this climate, Sega Atlus would generate a lot of negative headlines for paying peanuts (or nothing at all) to a group of enthusiast localizers. You, as the consumer, might be okay with it, but in many corners of the internet, the lack of payment would become the story. Few companies ever want to be associated with the term “unpaid labor.” There would need to be a sufficient payment in some form just to avoid negative press, and for some games that may be smaller in scope yet not smaller in script, the cost wouldn’t make sense.
There have been cases like when NIS purchased and then tweaked the Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure fan translations by Geofront, but how seldom the stars align for all parties involved should serve as an example. In that case, they were planning a major re-release anyway and in the intervening decade the game series those were from proved popular. I don’t know if anyone has ever translated P3 Aigis (can’t find one on romhacking.net), but even if they did, some at Altus would need to do the work (and therefore spend the money) to see if it’s up to snuff and edit it if necessary. That’s just a hard sell for this kind of game.
@Mando44646 Because RPGs often have reams and reams of dialogue and would therefore cost a lot to localize? If they wanted to do the job well enough, they’re going to have to pay for a couple of localizers that would likely cost more than the sales they’d get here for a formerly Japan-exclusive flip phone game.
I certainly would love to have them all in that HD-2D style. It would be fun revisiting DQ1 but I never ended up beating the DQ2, so this would likely entice me.
@Laraishond It does make a difference though for input-based trigger mechanics in said turn-based RPG. Fortunately, DF addressed in the video that it seems like the timing based inputs are pretty generous? He didn't specify if this remake has more generous timing windows to compensate for the reduced reaction time given, but Nintendo's would likely not overlook the need to compensate in some way..
I pre-ordered the Japanese version from Play-Asia because it was only $42 there + shipping + they had another import I wanted. So I probably won't receive it for another couple weeks, but I'm okay with that. I've got more than enough to keep me occupied.
Some of that English VO is pretty rough, but I expect that Japanese VO will be an option. Nonetheless, the dungeons just look a little… soulless? I hope there will be something good at the end of this rainbow, but what they’ve shown has me skeptical.
Completed Animal Well last weekend so moved onto Meg’s Monster last night. I don’t know about the English, but the Japanese feels like its going for an Earthbound style. Also still making my way through Mameda no Bakeru (it’s a long game, but it would feel less long if the gameplay was more engaging), and Final Fantasy Tactics: WotL on PSP. My wife’s been addicted to it lately.
@Rozetta Do you know what a platformer is? Should the site say “a game where the majority of the gameplay is based on jumping from one surface to another” each time they say “platformer”?
Mira, soy Cubano y el inglés tampoco era mi primer idioma, pero si visito un sitio escrito en inglés, seguro haya algunas palabras que no entiendo. Sé que tú hablas portugués, pero espero que entiendas que te digo.
@Rozetta It’s a gaming genre name. It’s not a “slang” any more than other genre names like “Metroidvania”, “platformer” or “Roguelike” are slangs. It’s a relatively new genre name, but so was “Roguelite” at one point recently. I understand where you’re coming from, but this isn’t the first time they’ve used the term, and if you’re open to a quick Google search, you can find the answers to your queries fairly readily. I’m not British, so I didn’t understand what they meant when they said “______ is pants,” in multiple articles, but it took very little effort to figure it out. It wasn’t Clockwork Orange.
To be clear, I am who boomer shooters are targeted towards and am not a fan of the term, but I was also never a fan of “Metroidvania,” yet that has entered the lingua franca long ago.
@Rozetta I am who boomer shooters are targeted towards (as a non-adolescent whose first PC game was Doom II), and I’ve heard the term multiple times. Like it or not, that has become the codified term for any ‘90s-style throwback FPS.
The Frog for Whom the Bell Tolls is a little heavier in text than one might think, so I’d recommend using a translation guide. A lot of the charm is in the dialogue. I don’t think the gameplay alone makes the game worth playing.
I would suggest the original Punch-Out!! is worth mentioning. Gunstar Heroes, PaRappa the Rapper, Rez, I could keep going.
In the other direction, I still love this game, but the original Doom II was not as tightly designed as Doom I. Some of the levels just got too big in a way that got me lost at times and didn’t really give me what I think Doom does great. Those are some of my choices… Also, I’ll agree with Alana about the wonderful Okami. It’s too long.
Thanks Kate for the Crow Country shout out! I liked the demo quite a bit and felt it really captured that PS1 survival horror aesthetic… Keep worrying that at one point a trash can is going to bite my arm off. Hope it lands on a Nintendo console soon, but it just felt right playing it on a PS controller.
Otherwise, still continuing my daily grind of one level of Mameda no Bakeru and learning some possibly true trivia about Japan. Will probably also switch on Animal Well to at least see it in action.
Definitely had a 1984 moment where in the morning I saw the “no” in the headline, thought “Well that’s unrealistic CEOspeak,” and then later saw the changed headline and I was like “…What?”
@Broosh Other sites have been more positive. Maybe check the meat of those to see if your wife’s fandom will help override some of the game’s deficiencies.
I’m just dropping in to say that I do appreciate how much Nintendo Life really is A) generally timely on reviews and B) reviews more games than likely necessary. Keep up the good work!
Don’t have much to contribute other than to say that I enjoyed reading this Alana. It is indeed a worrisome trend, though I still think between indies and AAAs I’m still left satisfied.
@-wc- I am American and raised in America yet I understood the flavor text of the article title to mean that it did in fact crack the top 10. This just might be context because I would find it strange for NL to say that and yet mean “just barely missed.”
Nonetheless, you had me curious and there are a couple pages discussing this very thing:
It’s a little weird to me that the DS remakes of FF Legend 2&3 aren’t on the website at all. I know they’re Japan-only… and I guess it would be a pain to make a page for a lot of Japan-only releases… but those remakes are only SaGa games (besides Frontier 1&2) I have even a little experience with.
Until May 6th, Play-Asia is currently running a “Get 3 games for $100” campaign, two of which are Paper Mario TTYD and Endless Ocean. I’m waiting on reviews for EO, but making each of those (+ another game) $33 each is worth the wait in shipping for me.
Picked up a discount 1 month Game Pass subscription yesterday to try out Grounded because I was thinking of getting it on PS5.
I’m really digging it so far. I don’t often play survival games, so this feels relatively fresh for me, and I just really love the world there. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to take down a spider by myself but I hope to.
On the Switch side, I’m still playing one level of Otogi Katsugeki Mameda no Bakeru each day, finding all the trivia and then going 😲The aesthetic of this game is by far the best thing about it. The actual combat is unengaging. But that’s okay, it’s still a light, fun affair.
Also still pecking away at Marvelous: Another Treasure Island on JPN NSO. Same for Shiren 1 on DS.
That’s a shame about no JP audio for those getting this, but I feel like few things sell me on a JRPG better than “excellent combat.” Looking forward to importing this.

Re: Poll: Is $60 Too Much For Nintendo's Switch Re-Releases?
The recent case of Mario v. Donkey Kong shows that they do take the time to consider charging what they think they can get away with.
