@PikaPhantom Thanks for the response. I knew the artwork was redone, but as it being a 2D game, and by other responses here, I don’t think that mattered much to folks. The new levels do matter though!
I bought this (albeit on sale). The developer commentary was enough to get me through the door, but that’s not the case for many others. I’m not sure we’ve ever been in a time where people seem to care so little about how games are actually made, and yet so confident about their expectations for games.
So outside of the developer commentary, what else did this bring? The original still looks good and is probably obtained cheaply on PC.
I'm actually OK. It depends on what's on the new system and what it does, but realistically, I have such a big backlog that includes even major games (including TotK), that I'm really set. Not to mention I go have PC and PS5. At this point, I just want to know if it will be backcompat, if said backcompat will give old games a boost, and if there's anything else unique to the system or is it just a more powerful Switch. That's really it.
I hope everyone lands on their feet. They’ve had a good track record so hopefully they can find work, but you have to wonder what would cause a full shutdown of what seemed like a successful publisher.
@CaleBoi25 No, at least the series up to this point is like NES-era JRPGs. You have random characters you get from wifi (colors and symbols indicate elements and spells), they can level up, you go through dungeons and in turn-based battles kill monsters. Get loot to upgrade or craft, IIRC. That’s about it from my experience with the series. I imagine this is a great game for a teen with no money, doesn’t emulate games, but wants a classic JRPG experience, with no story.
I’m kind of surprised by the results. The JPN one is such a mess, especially when you try to make sense of where the action is taking place. You have to squint to see that that’s not just a piece of roof lying on the floor.
Red Arremer looks goofy in the Western one, but at least the rest of the style and the scenes composition is more readable. Just my opinion.
I think this looks pretty good. The level design and such does seem reminiscent of the first game.
I just worry that if they didn’t bother to even contact the original developer, do they really love and understand why the first game was great? I guess we’ll see.
I’m a little disappointed to not see a unique game from Nintendo on horror, BUT I’m glad this is being made, hope it does well, and I’m 90% certain I’ll end up buying it.
I was surprised it wasn’t a 9 based on the review’s glowing praise. Regardless, it’s definitely on my radar now. I’ll keep looking into it and maybe wishlist it. Thanks!
Cammy is correct. I speak, read, and write Japanese at a relatively high level, but the reading audience doesn’t need to know the most precise reading form. Many won’t know ō means (unfortunately), but also in even the example you cite of Shuntaro, how would you get across that the Japanese R is rolled in a way to sound halfway like an L? I would say there is none and if the article is using the standard transliteration for most Japanese names, that is clearest to the largest amount of its readers. Just my 2円.
As for the Japanese releases, it’s strange to me that they released this Famicom Disk version of Onigashima and not the superior Super Famicom remakes of it…
I just appreciate being notified that a Spirit Hunter collection is available. I’ve had all three in my Japanese eShop wishlist for forever, waiting for a sale, and now… I get all 3 of them for about a third of their total eShop price? 🤑
This is really impressive. I wish I could have a time machine, have this rom finished and dumped onto a GBA cartridge, and give this to a young 7 y/o GBA gamer and see what they think of it.
I would never have thought this would be chosen for a remake. I enjoyed the 2nd one as a kid, but tried to play the first one as an adult and found the controls frustrating (and I’m not talking about the tank controls). So I’m definitely interested in this!
@-wc- Thanks! I’m also from America and did play RKA back in the ‘90s, loved it, but didn’t know there were any sequels 🤷♂️ (until I looked up more details about the game in the 2000s).
Oh I’m not saying those second and third games are good or not, I’m just saying that even taking the reviewer’s words at face value, including later where he gave the first game a 9 and the next two 7s, and the bonus material being described as “decent,” giving the entire package a 9 doesn’t feel justified by the review, IMO. However, since nobody else seems to be making that claim, perhaps I’m wrong.
@Tom-Massey Is it possible there was different regional popularity? I believe -wc- is American. Do you hail from the EU?
On something a little more practically important: if RKA alone is a 9, and the others are 7s, is 9 the best score for a rather pricey collection? I may be willing to put down $10 for RKA, but not for the other two. I know some argue that price shouldn’t affect score, but the review really seems to read like RKA is what you’re coming for, augmented by putting it in the “joy” category and the other two games comparative quality being in the “con” category. Just my $0.02 (and if I give you that 149 more times, you too can afford the game, less tax).
At first I was worried about that “they took the game off Steam” bit, but it seems like the reception was still great before they took it down. Then Blumhouse came in with a bunch of money and they want to their new version right. I appreciate that.
Anyway, this era of survival horrors is my jam, and I’ll happily be a sucker for these kind of throwbacks as long as there is still a good game underneath.
@Yosher Oh interesting! Have you tried to diminish two suits and build up the two others? I also prefer the blue deck as it does give you that extra hand per round, which also means an extra $ per round (I did fire Balatro up for another run last night oops 😅). Won that run with the same strategy, but I also lucked into some tags that gave me a polychrome joker.
I just started XC1 this weekend while visiting the in-laws so I haven’t gotten very far in. It also takes me longer since I’m playing in Japanese to reinforce my language learning so occasionally I’ll have to stop to double-check the meaning or reading of a word. I’ve been looking forward to it for ages, and hear nothing but good things. Have you played the other games in the series and what are your thoughts on them? Do you like JRPGs generally? (This is a time it’d nice if NL had a DM feature, but c’est la vie)
@Yosher Yeah, for me I found focusing on planet cards for flushes was very effective, as you could dispose of other suits and increase your preferred suits. Then lucking into some good jokers that complement that well, especially the jokers that multiply and keeping them on the right side of the joker deck. lol talking about all this makes me want to fire it up again, but I should keep trekking through XC1: DE.
My Switch says I’ve played Balatro for over 15 hours, so I imagine I’ve probably done like 18 or 19 hours.
@Yosher And I understand that. I also appreciate the levelheadedness of your response, because I can’t count the number of times the response to such a comment is just max volume Alex Jones “No, everything is a conspiracy against me, the consumer!!” So I’m glad I woke up to a much more reasonable response.
There are some games I feel are well equipped for digital, and do think this is one of them. No disrespect to physical. I’d be amassing a larger physical collection if I wasn’t planning on moving across the world in a couple years. But I certainly get the disappointment of, “Dang, prefer this physical. Guess I have no choice.” Purchase then “We are excited to announce…” I get it. 😅
@Yosher Considering when the game came out, I could believe the game’s surprise success made it financially viable to do a physical run and getting those distribution deals in place take time.
Good for anyone who hasn’t played this yet. It’s a good game!
I appreciate you guys recusing yourself from reviewing the game, even though I’m sure it would have helped the publisher, and your funny friend (and Kate is funny FTR).
Glad it’s coming to Switch! I was more likely to pick it up there since I’m still waiting on getting a Steam Deck.
@AitoHikari Kid on the bike? That’s Petal Runner IIRC.
Happy to see UFO50 get an update, Fear the Spotlight, Zoochosis, and Karma look like they have potential. Phoenix Springs was the most arresting stylistically for me and the seven year dev time makes me hope the narrative is tight and compelling.
@Tyranexx You’re welcome. I agree that the Xeno series should be mentioned on the list. The expansion pass (like the game currently) is 30% off so $21.
That’s a crazy amount of money. Hope the studios that do so find it gets them their money’s worth if they’re a smaller studio who just need a little more exposure for their title.

This series has its charm, but it’s really just there for a fairly no frills early Dragon Quest-like experience.
