PS4 had seven years on the market before PS5 came out, not to mention it did continue getting games into the PS5’s life. Heck, EA did a port of Star Wars Jedi Survivor to the PS4 just a couple weeks ago.
I’m saying that to say that PS4 was one of the best selling consoles of all time and has had more time on the market, yet Switch still coming out ahead by nearly every metric is mighty impressive. Great console.
I wonder if DQ I&II will eventually have a bundle release with III. At this point, I’m holding off on some purchases until I see some Steam Deck vs Switch 2 comparisons. I don’t normally care much about graphics, but DQIII to me is still incredible wherever I see it and I want that one to look as good as possible.
Looking forward to Phantom Brave, Fantasy Life, and Fantasian as well! There really are some great JRPGs on the horizon.
I already have too stacked of a list right now to pick up Zelda, but also the performance issues I hear about make me want to wait to see how the Switch 2 is going to treat this game. If they have a BC boost, great, I wouldn’t have lost anything by buying it. However, if there’s some sort of enhanced re-release announced around the time of launch, then I’m left in the lurch. So I can and will wait.
Still not sure what I’m actually playing this weekend. Wife and I finished every level of Mario Wonder last night (finally) except the secret-secret final extra difficult level, which I had to do solo because it’s a nightmare trying that one with two players. In general, I don’t think the crown system works great when there’s a noticeable discrepancy between player skill. I liked Mario Wonder on many points, but that aspect of the multiplayer wasn’t one of them. Still a great game though!
I’m really looking forward to seeing more from this. I’ve really enjoyed MK games in the past and find them so singular. And, of course, eager to see if there are any Nihongo nuggets.
I expected the game to run poorly on Switch, but I was not expecting it to do so poorly on other consoles as well. Looks like a skip no matter what your platform of choice is. A game has to do more than look good when it’s at this price.
@Zeebor15 Angelique was fairly popular in Japan as it released during the dating sim craze of the ‘90s that Tokimeki Memorial began. Angelique had a BUNCH of sequels and anime, manga, etc. I just don’t think ANY of that excitement left Japan, but when I’ve searched best SFC games in Japanese in the past, it has sprung up once or twice.
The only thing I don’t like about the NA cover is the strange streams of light forming an X over Bill Rizer’s crotch. If someone could explain that, I’d be grateful.
Nonetheless, I prefer the NA style overall as Japan’s faces just look a tad goofy.
Looking forward to know the name of the new publisher that has the great batting average Annapurna Interactive had. You don’t leave en masse like this unless there is a leader you believe in saying there’ll be new work for you. Take care of them well Nathan.
That’s a real shame. I really loved Void Bastards. The PC version of the game currently has a 75 average on Metacritic from 12 reviews, so I might shop around for more takes to get a fleshed out perspective. Bummer that PJ didn’t like it, though. Possible I won’t either.
Looking forward to see if Gimmick 2 captures the feel of the original, and if Shashingo will actually be effective. Thanks for this weekly article. I didn’t know either of the games I stated was coming out this week.
As others have said, I don’t see a lot of incentive on Nintendo’s part to reveal the Switch 2 just yet. You’re not getting your nephew a pre-order for a console that launches in March for Christmas.
I would love to be wrong and just see exactly what, if anything, the Switch 2 brings in that’s interesting besides more power. I am setting myself up for disappointment though because I am hoping some games will get a BC boost. 😥
Current MC average is in the low 80s if you average all the consoles. That’s still good! I have too big a backlog to buy this at launch, but I’ll definitely pick it up on sale within the next year I’m sure.
I’ll likely be playing Clannad whenever I hit the toilet if my wife isn’t using the Switch to finish Portal for the first time.
If she is playing Portal, I should be plugging away at Tales of Phantasia Cross Edition for PSP via my Vita, but JRPGs are a little harder for me to do in bite-sized chunks than other genres, including visual novels. On PC, I’m plugging away at the campaign for the original Starcraft.
I agree that at this point, they should just make the Switch your one stop shop for all things 2D Castlevania. Give us the wonderful Requiem collection (or even better yet, Dracula X from the PSP), and nestle in Rebirth in there or separately.
I just freakin’ love this franchise so much, and I’m just so glad they are keeping these great games easily accessible. 😄
@-wc- Hmm, I see it as more of saying “Hey, in this five game collection, one of the games is pretty lousy. Fortunately they mainly include it as a contrast to its superior remake, but it’s still just a lousy portion of the package.”
The Arcade Anniversary Collection was meant for historical purposes, which is why it had Haunted Castle untouched. This time they used Dominus as a trojan horse to get HC Revisted in front of people, and the original is there both to serve as a contrast and for the few who “remember the original” and seek to recapture past joy.
@Olliemar28 I honestly don’t know how y’all have the patience to keep correcting misconceptions about how joys/cons and scoring work on what seems like at least a biweekly basis.
@-wc- That game was terrible back in arcades, and has only aged worse over time. If you’ve gone back to it in the last five years and still think it’s good, more power to you, but I’ve not met someone who has gone back to it and think it holds up.
That said, I’m excited to see the Revisted version that supposedly will actually make it tolerable! Looking forward to picking this up down the line.
Scanning other reviews, it seems like the average will end up at 77ish, if I were to guess.
Some of the guess-and-check mechanics not being modernized is an unfortunate, but I also understand why it fits in these style of games. That said, story and writing are king here and I’m glad that seemed to have been done well. I still own and haven’t played the previous FDC games, so I’ll just be wishlisting this for now. If I was more reckless with my cash, I’d buy this Day 1 to support Nintendo making swings for the fences like these.
A) I hope the game is good and B) I hope the demo leaves players wanting more. Not since Danganronpa has it felt like an ADV has had mainstream success here.
I’m genuinely shocked. I’ve already played through it in Japanese and learned quite a bit about some Japanese prefectures, but this game is such a love letter to Japan and each of its prefectures (and that it also didn’t sell that great [nor outside of the trivia was the most engaging game]), I would have bet money it wouldn’t get localized.
I’m curious to see what the reception to the game will be like in the West.
I suppose in difficult times, if any staff left after the MS announcement, they would likely come back just because there probably aren’t a lot of other great opportunities out there right now.
Visiting in-laws for sister-in-laws graduation from PA school, so not really a lot of time this week. If I do have time, it would be a small bit to read a little bit of Clannad.
@Max_the_German Doom I and II (on the NA eShop) have been $4.99 each. This bundle is $9.99. If anything, you saved a penny by buying them individually rather than buying this bundle. Were you under the impression that you paid $10 for each game?
@RetroGames I would say all components contribute to the final package of a game. I only specified “action” because there are many who would say Bahumut Lagoon or some other JRPG instead.
Just curious, do you believe there’s a better Japan-only SFC action game? Always like to hear recommendations regarding SFC.
I haven’t played this yet, but I’ve heard many SFC aficionados describe this as the best action game on the SNES that never left Japan. It’s clearly the word of mouth that caused such a port to happen because it certainly didn’t sell enough at launch.
Ah, Lipple Island. Always in the shadow of Linkle Liver Story as far as great Engrish titles go, but a fun one nonetheless.
Arino played two of these three on Game Center CX. I would almost consider purchasing Ripple Island if it was standalone. Wing of Madoola IIRC is also not half-bad.
I finished Bowser’s Fury this past week, which was surprisingly delightful.
I’m still playing through Clannad on the Switch, and trying to be strong in not switching from the JPN text to English too often, though I really do love that they made language switch just a button press for this and some other VNs they’ve done. It’s really great for language learners from either country.
I also started as well a JPN play through of Tales of Phantasia: Voiced Edition for PSP (on my Vita). It’s been good, but the combat so far has been too easy. I imagine things will get spicier later.
If I have time to game in front of the TV, it might be Siren 1 in JPN I’ll be playing.
@Twilite9 I appreciate restrictions that in this case shows where most of the excitement is. Like, for me, it’s sad that Emio is doing worse than a 14 year old Wii game that also had an enhanced port on 3DS, but it is what it is.
