Re: Nintendo Announces Everybody 1-2-Switch!, Pre-Orders Now Live

SmaggTheSmug

@ArcadianLegend99 You say we're "spoiled rotten" for game selection, but the vitriol for 1-2-Switch comes from the time when it was a launch title. Game selection on launch was pretty slim, it was basically this game and BotW. And this game sucked. The only reason it sold at all was because there was pretty much nothing else.
Bringing it back when there is a wide selection of games for the system is doubly baffling. I'd rather see Snipperclips 2.

Re: Soapbox: Pokémon Desperately Needs A Rival, But Who's Big Enough To Take It On?

SmaggTheSmug

Honestly? Probably Microsoft or Epic. Someone who can hire a dev to create a competent Pokemon rival, invest in some promotional material like a tiktok webseries or youtube vids and throw the game on every platform other than Switch (with mobile being the priority). Make the game cheap and appealing, leave microtransactions out of it (at least until it gets enough footing) to make it more appealing to parents as well and you have a shot.

Re: Talking Point: What Is A 'Traditional' Zelda Game, Anyway?

SmaggTheSmug

BOTW is not a traditional Zelda game, but I don't see it as a negative. I'd say a traditional Zelda game needs the 8 dungeons and items used for traversal gained either in those dungeons or just before them. Using weapons other than your trusty sword and shield also breaks the mold. But those elements that innovate make it such a good game. I even like weapon degradation, sure, it's annoying early on when all you have is tree branches and easily breaking Boko weapons, but it adds playstyle variety. It's one of the few action games where you can use a spear. I would hope the sequel would let one charge with a lance like a knight would, but I don't expect it.

Re: Warside Blasts Onto Kickstarter With Advance Wars-Inspired Turn-Based Tactics

SmaggTheSmug

Looks like much like Tiny Metal they went the route of increasing the number of Infantry types as well as adding some of their own new units. Imagine what Sami could do with mortar teams or snipers! And IFVs too? I'm suddenly less excited about Re-Boot Camp.
And then it actually has unique faction units. I'm feeling dangerously hyped.

EDIT. All of you people saying "rip off" seemingly don't realize how game genres are made. I'm old enough to remember when all FPS games were called "DOOM clones". This games seems to improve on the AW base by adding new units and thus new strategies.
I wonder how y'all would feel if the Battle Isle series was ported to Switch or rebooted.

Re: Early Donkey Kong Design Document From Miyamoto Showcases 'Popeye' Origin

SmaggTheSmug

Funny how some iconic characters/franchises were almost licenses. Mario was Popeye, Alex Kidd was Son Goku, Mega Man looks a lot like Astro Boy, Warcraft was originally supposed to be a Warhammer game... Then there's Sonic, who was original, but seems to share a lot of design DNA with black and white early cartoon characters like Felix the Cat or Mickey Mouse.

Re: Poll: Do You Want Weapon Degradation To Return In Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom?

SmaggTheSmug

I think everyone hates it at first because the first few weapons you encounter are terrible and break really fast. But after a while you find more weapons than you can carry and it becomes kind of like Goblin Slayer (Moblin Slayer?): if a sword gets too dull or breaks, pick up a spear nearby.
It also made us experiment with weapons other than standard sword and board and I have to say this game is one of the few I had a lot of fun with a spear. I'm still unhappy you could properly joust with them (what's with the helicopter swinging?), but it was cool nonetheless.
I hope we get to wield a top heavy single handed weapon like an ax or a mace with a visible difference in handling (swords are bottom heavy) or maybe even dual wield?

Re: XEL Is Officially The Worst Switch Game Of 2022, According To Metacritic

SmaggTheSmug

@RareFan In Pokemon SV the game would be fun if not for the technical jank. It's mostly baffling because of how high profile the franchise is, like they could probably buy an AAA studio or two and assign them just to fix bugs. But a lot of the open world stuff actually works and the combat system is the same as always.
A really bad game would be one that even without technical issues would be just a chore and a bore to play.

Re: Review: Lunistice - A 32-Bit Platforming Dream That Gives Sonic A Serious Run For His Money

SmaggTheSmug

@AJB83 IT may be the art style for this game, but for the original 32-bit games it wasn't. It was the best approximation of their concept art and style they could create in then state of the art technology.
I would rather see what was on boxes and in instruction manuals or concept art books brought to life than hardware limitations. Show the characters what they are supposed to look like, not what they looked like within a set number of polygons.
Or maybe I just think that early 3D era graphics aren't worth returning to, as they aged much worse than 16-bit 2D sprites.
