Re: Review: Mario Party Superstars - A Party Most Hearty

SmaggTheSmug

As a person who has no experience with any Mario Party its seems to me from this review that this would be the one to get, not Super Mario Party? Or is the previous game more fun and presenting what the Switch can do if you turn off the nostalgia goggles? Sadly this review doesn't seem too helpful to someone who isn't already familiar with the series (though I assume few people using this site aren't).

Re: Nintendo Switch Online's N64 Games Need Some Work

@Spiders Back then we thought the 3D models were amazing and we were annoyed the fog covered them up. Now the 3D models have aged like milk and the fog has become more of a beauty filter on them. Kind of like the CRT scanlines in NES games. Or when old comic books get reprinted on good quality paper and the coloring looks garish (as it was made for cheap grayish paper).

Re: Ubisoft Is Bringing A New Monopoly Game To The Nintendo Switch

@romanista Because that bad game with a checkered past is making tons of money. Whoever owns it now wants to keep it in public eye.
I think Monopoly could be fixed with either a hard turn limit or some sort of mechanic that makes each bankrupcy a heavier and heavier burden on the rest of the players, leading to a market crash.

Re: Talking Point: How Many Hours Is A 'Short' Game For You?

SmaggTheSmug

Kinda depends, for an indie an hour is short unless it's an hour per run and you're supposed to replay it (e.g. The Binding of Isaac). For a big budget game 6 hours may feel short. Surprisingly I put 40 hours into Akrkham City and that felt like it was overstating its welcome (but I wanted to 100% Riddler trophies and side missions).

Re: Back Page: The Dark Secrets Of Brewster's 'Pigeon Milk'

SmaggTheSmug

Ugh, why did you have to mention the foul substance that is cottage cheese?

Also in Polish "bird milk" was used as an expression for when someone has (nearly) everything (as in "the only thing he lacks is bird milk"). Nowadays though it's mostly associated with specific candy, a kind of chocolate coated milky puff. So maybe you could make this less off-putting and just say Brewster is giving you one of these with your coffee.

Re: Soapbox: What Makes A Game A Good Metroidvania Anyway?

SmaggTheSmug

1. Same thing that makes a good 2D platformer in the first place. There should be some challenging jumping, running and moving around and combat should not get in the way. This is where I think Metroid fails, Samus controls really awkwardly in classic titles and enemies tend to be just the right size to require the player to stop and aim at them. Castlevania quick whip or Guacamellee punches feel less pace killing.
2. Level design. If we're going to get stuck in the same places over and over again they better be worth it.
3. That "just out of reach" part mentioned in the article. Makes the player eager to explore.
4. Variety between "zones". You don't even need unlockable abilities or boss fights. Although if the boss fight is the same one repeated it puts a damper on things. VVVVVV is an excellent example of a Metroidvania without abilities and yet each zone is different. Xeodrifter has abilities but each zone feels repetitive after the first one.
5. Some degree of freedom. Even though most of these games are ultimately linear, player should be able to enter some areas they're not supposed to "yet" just to feel like they're not following a leash. Otherwise just make a regular platformer.
