Re: Round Up: Everything Announced In Nintendo's May 2022 Indie World Showcase

SmaggTheSmug

Honestly quite a few titles stood out to me. Another Crabs Treasure looks fun. The gibbon game seems like a good idea, hopefully we'll executed. Girlfriend immediately bought Mini Motorways (double dipping on it as she played it a lot on her phone). Idol Manager could be lowkey brilliant. And Elec Head seems like a return of indie puzzle platformers, in a good sense.

Re: Negative Fan Reaction To 'Return To Monkey Island' Made Its Creator 'Sad'

SmaggTheSmug

I am not sold on the art style yet, but I agree that Monkey Island should not be pixel art. Curse was hand drawn and very expressive and the later two were 3D. I know Mega Man reverted to 8-bit for two recent games, but the latest one came back to present and even invented new gameplay elements. I wouldn't expect Monkey Island to do any less.
Also SCUMM is the last thing I would want to return. 3D ones also had wack controls. I hope Return sticks to pointing and clicking.

Re: Feature: Will These 10 Classic Western RPGs Ever Come To Switch?

SmaggTheSmug

I don't think Morrowind or other Elder Scrolls work that well outside the mod-friendly PC. Morrowind has one of the most unique fantasy worlds and great writing, but it is still a buggy mess without mod support.
As for Vampire, the series seems more like it's in death throes than actually reviving. The paper part is hitting miss after miss and the sequel to Bloodlines seems to have entered development hell. Some smaller World of Darkness titles are coming out (and my FLGS got a shipment of Vampire books just now), but overall the series seems to have died with the 90s and 2000s.

Re: Daemon X Machina Creators Announce Survival Game 'Deadcraft', Coming To Switch In May

SmaggTheSmug

I downloaded it without reading the article and I did not expect a zombie apocalypse themed Harvest Moon. DxM wasn't my jam (honestly if the mechs didn't fly it probably would have been) but at least it was original. This was kinda old school, aside from the zombie arm. But I gotta say the "survival" mechanics don't appeal to me. I feel chained to a location I don't care about.

Re: Feature: Best Eggs In Games

SmaggTheSmug

Years ago I worked a little with a friend to make a point and click about Detective Yolk, a really hard-boiled private eye. His nemesis was Don Mozarella and his macaroni gang.
Sadly we never really got this going and thus we missed out on being featured here.

Re: Demon Turf: Neon Splash Shadow-Drops On Switch eShop

SmaggTheSmug

It's nice to see a developer ditching an entire big part of the game (and seemingly obligatory one, like combat) to focus on what's good. Especially when in most platform games combat is often rudimentary or feels more like a sudden stopgap than a natural part of the experience.

Re: Talking Point: Is It Ever A Good Idea To Start At 'The Beginning' Of Series Like Zelda Or Dragon Quest?

SmaggTheSmug

@Gryffin Here's my issue, if I would recommend an entry point to the series I would prefer for it to be a "nominate subspecies" of the series. For Castlevania some of the main features are: vampire hunter (preferably a Belmont), uses whip and subweapons, fights Dracula at the end. Aria flips this around, as the only whip user there is an NPC and the main villain is not Dracula. It's kind of like explaining to an alien what birds are, with emphasis put on flying, and then showing them a penguin as the best example.

Re: Talking Point: Is It Ever A Good Idea To Start At 'The Beginning' Of Series Like Zelda Or Dragon Quest?

SmaggTheSmug

Hah, with Castlevania I even have that dillema with just the small selection in Advance Collection! Rondo of Blood is an antique and not really a good representation of the series, Circle is clunky and doesn't feature a Belmont, Harmony does feature a Belmont but feels like a worse version of Circle (if a bit less clunky) and while Aria is the best game in the set, it basically turns the story on its head (without knowing previous entries it will just be plain confusing for example why you need those three specific Souls to get the true ending). Even the most popular Castlevania (SotN) wouldn't be a good start because of the main character!
For the record, I went with the GBA games in release order and attempted the Richter one a few times before going "nope, too archaic".

Re: 'Seven Pirates H' Brings, Ahem, "Booby Training" To Switch This May

SmaggTheSmug

@Ryu_Niiyama I remember last Indie Direct having a game where a woman is turning sexy men into weapons? You don't get more objectification than turning into literal objects
There's also a few otome VNs on Switch too. Yeah, it's not the same as a game about "training boobs", but guess what, in general women are turned on by different things than men. Case in point: there really isn't an equivalent of "50 Shades of Grey" for men that is anywhere as famous.

Re: 'Seven Pirates H' Brings, Ahem, "Booby Training" To Switch This May

SmaggTheSmug

@AW1Long You would probably be surprised, but a lot of these sexy character designs are made by women. Bayonetta is probably the most famous example. A lot of abuse hentai is drawn by women too.
Japanese sex culture is much different to the West, especially puritan-raised America, where companies like Blizzard champion "social justice" in their games while actually abusing their female employees.

Re: Ori Developer Moon Studios Labelled "Oppressive" Workplace In New Report

SmaggTheSmug

@JaneBear It's two types of immature adults running into each other. The "hurr saying slurs is funneh" kind and the "I heard a mean word and now I have PTSD" kind. 4chan vs Tumblr.
The correct response would be "hey, cut that out" and/or leaving the company with a bad employer review. "Oppressive" should be reserved for the Blizzards of the world, otherwise people will roll their eyes next time a sexual assault victim comes forward.
