Re: Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns Announced - Story Expansion, New Fighters And "Big Surprises"

Roibeard64

If I play a game and really enjoyed it but wanted more in the past it was like this oh maybe it will sell enough for a sequel to come out in 3-5 years.

DLC allows us now go great I enjoyed that game and theres now an option to get another slice of that enjoyment without necceseraily waiting years for a sequel if i really want it. It also keeps developers in work and teams intact between the main releases and helps ensure companies greenlight the sequel if demand was there for dlc.

You of course i judge each individual DLC offering on its own merit including value vs cost of course before deciding to buy it or not.

The market simply isn't the same as was in 90s or 2000s. If a company can't use dlc to cover the additional development time and cost they are just going release base game and that's it or they will go to microtransactions.

If you dont like DLC and will never pay for same thats entirely your call but games arent incomplete without the dlc (barring some shady pratices from bad actors eg characters being on the disk from day one needing a code to unlock).

The base game is the main course and dlc is an optional dessert or as splatoon puts it a side order.

Re: Mortal Kombat 1 'Year 2' Panel Announced - Story Expansion, New Fighters And "Big Surprises"

Roibeard64

@SillyG what are you asking for here a smash bros ulimate version 2 physical release a year later with piranha plant to byleth included and a final version Ulimate Ulimate released a year after that with fighter pack 2s characters ending in Sora?

So you could pay full game price three times total?

If anything smash brothers did dlc correctly.
1-it was developed after the initial game, there wasn't Sora sitting on the cart waiting for a code to unlock him etc
2-its entirely optional, no true endings or massive online advantages were locked behind DLC
3-it offered season passes or individual purchases. If you weren't interested in sone characters no need to actually buy them, though obviously pass saved some money.
4-it kept the game relevant and popular.
5- the price isn't as bad as you think it is.
Dlc is always more expensive as has to cover additional ongoing development.
Here it's 6 euro for a challenger pack there's plenty of games looking for that price or more for a handful of cutfits/skins or ingame currency or early unlock of a particular weapon or mode etc.

Re: Mortal Kombat 1 'Year 2' Panel Announced - Story Expansion, New Fighters And "Big Surprises"

Roibeard64

@littlegreenbob nah those street fighter 2 different editions came out every year and one less than a year. You got burnt if you bought one only for a much better version to release shortly after. The option was stick with what you had or fork over full price for updates, balances even the ability to both play ss the same characters and sometimes a few extra characters.

It was a much worse situation

Re: Capcom Currently Has No Plans To End Physical Game Support

Roibeard64

@CammyUnofficial I think they have gone down that route of being a niche market for collecters , particularly 4k and blu ray.

There's certain films I basically rebuy once formats changes eg Vhs-DVD - Blu ray-4k
However I've noticed I don't own any separate players anymore. Once consoles ditch a disk drive physical films will suffer.

Re: Capcom Currently Has No Plans To End Physical Game Support

Roibeard64

@SillyG look I don't extactly trust ign tbh to get everything right but it at least shows were the money in the industry Is coming for. Yes the cheap games that will never get a physical release tilt the scales of the overall picture but most gamers I know are now fully digital.

I do an 80/20 split myself in favour of physical for the Switch. For other consoles you can flip those numbers.

Thinking about it one of the reasons I'm not as into physical on xbox or playstation is that their digital shops have sales that often see big games like resident evil 4 remake reduced for well below cost in shops , often about 2 months after launching. Switch games can be cheaper in shops on release and later cheaper in shops even with sale in eshop. The eshop doesn't do the same level of discounts generally.

Re: Capcom Currently Has No Plans To End Physical Game Support

Roibeard64

@Pabpictu extactly this, there a tendency to blame the companies but the majority of consumers are going digital. So it's only a matter of time before they all start one by one deciding physical is no longer worth the cost of producing.

IGN had a report that 90% of game sales last year in the UK were digital.

Push Square reported that only 4% of overall sales for Sonys Q2 for 2023 were physical with 21% of sales being digital.. this breaks down to games sales overal being 67% digital and 33% physical.

Convenience is killing off physical games more than any big push from gaming companies.
I don't want it to happen but I can't see it going any other way, same with dvds and blu rays.

Re: Shiver Entertainment Has Updated Its Website After Being Acquired By Nintendo

Roibeard64

By the time Xbox bought Rare they were a shadow of what they use to be.
Alot of talent had left them and gave us the likes of timesplitters.
Starfox adventures was a long in development disappointment and ive never personally liked it at all.
They also released a lot of meh gba games and grabbed by the ghoulies was very medicore and kameo though decent was very short and just didn't become a big hit (may been just the wrong game for its time).
Perfect dark zero was just awful.
I love N64 era Rare but it was a bit of a sinking ship already when xbox bought it.

Re: Nintendo Expands Switch Online's Game Boy Library With Three More Classics

Roibeard64

@Mana_Knight I was the same but got it on 3ds and flew through it though in fairness there were other factors back as a kid beside me getting better at games in general.
1- with no save feature it had to be done in one sitting which on og gameboy could strain the eyeballs, wasnt always allowed the hour i needed to finish it in a sitting and also finding batteries were an issue for me as a kid.
2- I just never released how close I was at times to beating it so I'd often stop.
3- wasn't a big fan of the shooting levels.
4- had and completed Warioland as well and that was my go to gameboy game until pokemon arrived later on. Still never beat Metroid 2 though

Re: Nintendo Apparently Wanted Samus Aran's Fortnite Skin To Be A Switch Exclusive

Roibeard64

Like people are surprised by this? That nintendo who for decades have a policy of you want nintendo ips and nintendo games you play a nintendo system as their entire brand and main selling point over their competitors.
Apart from Cdi (which had unqiue reasons) and early mostly edutainment games on the pc they have always had that rule.
No I'm glad they put their foot down here as it would have only diluted the brand and message.
Xbox and Sony are putting some things on pc and we'll xbox on other platforms but that might be because they are losing money.
I don't think there would be an increase in Metroid dread sales but there would be alot of when is it coming to pc etc calls sure it's in fortnite so it's possible.....

Re: Keanu Reeves Will Reportedly Voice Shadow In Sonic The Hedgehog 3

Roibeard64

@rvcolem1 makes perfect sense the right media for right place and time and some pretty good choices of shows and games there.
Just think anti-matter is pearl clutching if he thinks Shadow is just too extremely edgy for a Sonic movie, he's in Sonic boom cartoon and that netflix show like
Sure Shadow's very own edgelord game on Gamecube/ps2 only received a E10+ age rating from the ESRB in the day.

Re: Keanu Reeves Will Reportedly Voice Shadow In Sonic The Hedgehog 3

Roibeard64

@rvcolem1 I think if was up to him there would be no media that isnt suitable for a sensitive 3 year old child.
To each their own but he really seems to struggle with the concept most gamers aren't interested in Paw Patrol and Ryan's racing. Shockingly based on sales figures people like Fifa,COD and GTA even if he doesn't.

Re: Sonic Movies To Be 'Avengers-Level' Events, Says Franchise Producer

Roibeard64

Ha nope , just nope.
1 The avengers hype has been and gone.
2. like really it's Sonic films the character doesn't appeal the same way the MCU eh maybe did at this stage, with general audience.
3. Both movies so far have been okay but not great. They were fine but mostly carried by Jim Carrey and nostalgia. Reviews are no where near the initial marvel films reception.

Re: Mortal Kombat 1's New Update Adds The Kameo Fighter Janet Cage

Roibeard64

People who are confused by this if you play Mk 1 story mode ( stop here if you dont want a spoiler) towards the end you have an string of fights against fighters from other timelines/unniverses usually a mix of 2 existing fighters with a combined name or a gender swap version. She's just one of these that's one of the Kameo or assists , they run in perform an attack and run off.

Re: GameStop Hit By Layoffs As Analyst Predicts 'Unsustainable' Sales Decline

Roibeard64

Even during the good times of physical media I'd only really get consoles at gamestop.
The very rare games I'd buy there were limited to only thegames you can't get elsewhere like some JRPGs or anime games due to the Gamestop tax which was always 10-20 extra for anything compared to any other outlet like Smyths, argos etc.
Then amazon killed that off as you can pretty much get any game off them.
Digital hurt them but also the likes of Cex and more catered retro gamestores muscled them out of physical second hand games too.

Re: Game Boy Emulator Developer Permanently Removes App From Google Play Store

Roibeard64

There was alot of internet reports that Yuzu supposedly had Tears of the Kingdom before/on launch day. It also seeminglt made alot of money from Patreon and of course the Switch is a live system.

Of course Nintendo turned its attention to them.
Let's not pretend other companies wouldn't.

I've come to the conclusion that Nintendo seems to generally ignore these things until they either make money, or are current console or conflict with its planned releases.

Basically Yuzu was making too much noise and money for Nintendo to ignore so it went after it.

Of course it also scares off others doing the same and of course you can't remove them all but you don't want your console being in a position where its latest game is easily pirated. The easier it gets the more people will do it.

Re: Random: New Pokémon Ad Positions 3DS As 'Retro', And The Internet Disagrees

Roibeard64

Well its not modern and it's discontinued so it's not current. They sell 3ds games in retro games stores. Like yeah makes you feel old. Sure live long enough and game long enough and it will keep happening. I've experienced it with the consoles of my school to college years the N64, Gamecube and even the wii. Eventually you get like people in their 20s that game but have simply never actually played your formative gaming years consoles once.

Re: Sony Lays Off 900 PlayStation Employees, Closes London Studio & Cancels Projects

Roibeard64

@Anti-Matter you really need to stop trying to twist every announcement in favour of the same opinion everytime. Likes of Bluey and Paw Patrol aren't shifting PlayStation consoles, are multiplatform releases, don't appeal to Sonys target audience at all and they exist on PlayStation without Sony having to make them..You could argue Sonys spending too much on likes of tent pole releases like Spiderman and the last of us etc but that's what is keeping Sony ahead of Xbox sales.

Re: Random: Some Rare Fans Are Upset About The Latest Switch Online Announcement

Roibeard64

Such moaning over something never promised to release at all.
-Nintendo don't decide what games Microsoft puts on switch.
-Also Rare Replay is a bit of a mess of backwards compatibility with older xbox titles rather than one game, wouldn't be easily ported.

  • Nintendo owed shares in Rare back in the past but it never owned them or had a majority.
get a cheap Xbone if you must play them . The games dirt cheap.
