This is huge news! How is Netflix going to handle HBO if the deal is accepted? I imagine they would shut it down in favor of offering all content in Netflix which is a big plus for the platform since Netflix infra is a lot better. At the same time, this much content would likely require a price increase…
As for gaming division, I don’t really see them changing anything about it. It’s more of a bonus than the actual reason for this offer, I imagine. For us, diversifying the revenue with games could help hold the price of Netflix sub.
@Phelaidar I don’t think so. A port of a game created for higher-end devices has to cut things down because it never had a Switch 2 profile in the first place, which is not the same as saying the Switch 2 can’t do X or Y. And like even DF acknowledges, many cuts for Switch 2 version are inherited from Series S version and not specifically a fault of the hardware.
I would say Nintendo is going to show us over the years the actual limit of the hardware, particularly with Zelda and Xenoblade. Also 3rd party games that have a Switch 2 profile during development will likely produce better results with less cuts and more adaptations instead.
The one limit I believe is quite clear as of now between Nintendo and 3rd party games is shadow quality which is very low across the board for some reason.
@fenlix That’s the internal resolution, DLSS is applied on top of that and what we get is a much better image than the resolution implies. It’s a very different situation to Switch 1 where lower res was displayed as such.
@kal_el_07241 It’s an expression that became popular during Switch 1 generation, but it doesn’t really apply to Switch 2 yet since we’re far from the limit of the hardware. Still, it’s used for pretty much any heavy 3rd party game running properly on a Nintendo device for some reason.
Normal first then hard replay is the way to go for Metroid games. I lost count of how many times I completed Dread at this point, such a good game!
Metroid Prime Remastered is also excellent, although it took a bit longer for me to understand it since it looks like an FPS but is absolutely not an FPS game in its design.
I assume this list is user ranked, because it makes absolutely no sense. As for Tomb Raider (2013), it is the very best in the franchise considering the ones available right now. Too bad the Switch 2 port is the worst way to play the game, even the PS3 edition is better in several ways (I still got the Switch 2 port, mind you, which says a lot about how awesome the actual game is).
Excellent game, but lazy port for Switch 2. I still hope that Aspyr improves lighting at least.
For those asking, this is definitely NOT the PS4 version, but it’s also not the PS3 version either. It feels like they created a custom port for Switch 1 and upscaled for Switch 2.
I had one for Switch and despite the storage increase on Switch 2, I knew I would need one so I bought a 256GB card day one.
It’s enough for me for now. I can wait a couple years for price decreases on larger capacity MicroSD Express cards. It’s likely that Samsung and other companies will increase production with the higher demand.
It’s a brilliant game and at this price I bought it to play once again. It’s a great portable experience. However, as others noted, it’s nowhere near what Switch 2 could do - hopefully Aspyr patches it with improved lightning and visuals overall to match PS4 definitive edition.
@mackers84 It does. The games perform better but look worse because it outputs 1080p at most in a 4k signal. Even the splash screen when you boot a game looks blurry now compared to playing Switch 1 docked.
All games I tried worked perfectly, however they look worse in both docked and portable modes. I guess it was better to output lower res to the TV and then let it upscale…
My enhancement wish is for Nintendo to automatically apply AI upscaling for Switch 1 games. That would do wonders to the visuals of most games.
I’m very happy with mine, and I know quite a few people from work that have one too. In fact, playing NS2 on lunch breaks convinced another coworker to get his own.
This is the first Nintendo system in a long time that makes me excited for 3rd party games! And we don’t even know much about the roadmap of 1st party yet.
There “fans” are a bit questionable, though… Lady D is iconic and the actress is amazing, that Road to Requiem video is really nice.
Jill and Chris are as much the face of Resident Evil today as zombies. If you haven’t played the old games, they simply don’t matter much. Yeah, Chris shows up in Ethan’s saga, but Lady D has a much higher impact that Chris, for example. And in modern day the only opportunity most people had to meet Jill is RE3 Remake.
I would say Leon, Umbrella and the newer villains from RE7 and Village are far more recognizable.
On one side, I’m happy that we’re getting another Switch 2 Edition (and honestly I wish we had more), but at the same time I’m sad that a new Animal Crossing will likely take a few years yet given the timing of this release.
Nice! Zero is a very good classic RE apart from the drop-item-everywhere feature.
Also they should rename the inevitable Code Veronica remake as Resident Evil 5, them remake RE5 as RE6 and we can all collectively pretend the original RE6 never happened. 😅
This is a very solid reason to upgrade to the NSO upper tier. DS has one of Nintendo's best libraries IMO, I regret selling mine, but that was the rule back in the day - sell the previous console to get the new one.
@kmtrain83 I haven’t seen any surveys, just based my opinion on the overall lifecycle of products where early adopters are usually the fans.
I see your point, but for casual players, Switch 1 might be preferred instead of Switch 2 BC since it’s cheaper and it has a lot of games and accessories already available. This will change in a few years of course, but we’re not there yet.
It’s Pokémon, they have the money to do full voice-over with hollywood artists and script, state-of-the-art visuals and creative gameplay. They just choose not to do so because the minimum effort sells a lot already.
I’m loving my Switch 2. The hardware has a lot of potential for Nintendo games and 3rd party is finally at a reasonable quality level to the point I might pick games on Switch 2 over PS5.
I would only not recommend Switch 2 for casual players at this point since it’s still early days and Switch 1 games are most of the library, anyone else that is interested should get it! Amazing console!
After Star Wars Outlaws, I’m very curious about this game on Switch 2. Not sure I’ll be able to buy it if they stick to this date, though. Metroid Prime 4 + kid’s birthday + Christmas is already a lot of money.
Good to know they got battles right. Hopefully they take feedback on this for the next “gen” game. It’s Game Freak, though, so who knows? Everyone loved the catching mechanic from Arceus, only for them to drop it for Scarlet & Violet (with marketing messages praising the return of traditional catching mechanics).
I love these games, they have the best level design of 3D Mario to date, however I really didn’t like to play Galaxy on Switch. Wiimote is the only appropriate way to play these, I’m afraid.
Hopefully we can get a 3D Mario in Switch 2 with excellent level design and another sandbox one like Odyssey, but it’s unlikely.
Not sure why are people so bothered with 30fps this gen. I would take a stable 30fps any day over an unstable 60fps. Just look at DK Bananza when it drops from 60 to 30, it’s really distracting. Meanwhile, Star Wars Outlaws at fixed 30fps feels great.
I see this as a matter of which game it is and how it affects gameplay. Narrative based games don’t really gain much with 60fps. Platformers and sports games gain way more with higher smooth frame rate than higher visual fidelity. This game I’m not sure, never played them, but isn’t it all about rendering a bazillion enemies to make you feel like an all-powerful warrior? Wouldn’t increasing to 60fps with less enemies go against the game proposition?
This looks way better than I expected from the Direct trailer. I’m so happy for all of us who will play this on Switch 2!
@Olliemar28 By the way, the author is a Brazilian influencer that lives in Japan. The full video is available on YouTube for those interested (and it would be nice if NL updated the article with that reference).
@ShonenJump121 We’re reaching a point of diminishing returns for new generations, especially sales-wise considering how much money is required for the improved details. Most games designed for PS5 have likely started production recently so we’ll still see PS5-but-better games for quite some time into PS6 lifecycle. At the point that we actually have games that can’t be ported to Switch 2, Nintendo might be ready for Switch 3 or whatever.
This is a turning point for me as well. I was waiting for brand new Resident Evil on Switch 2 to convince me to buy all games on a single platform. It’s finally the case. The only question is if the visual cutbacks are alright in the final build compared to alternatives.
I seriously don’t get this kind of port. It’s the exact same game every year, you don’t need crazy physics or animations, it should be an easy win to get good enough visuals with 60 or even 120 fps. Also it’s a sports game, 60fps over visual fidelity should always be the minimum choice for the genre.
Digital Foundry noticed quite a few performance issues with Borderlands 4 even in high-end PCs. I’ll wait and see, of course, since that seems to be the slogan for good Switch 2 ports, but I’m concerned with this one.
I wish they would do something to adapt the pointer controls better for traditional controllers. Galaxy in 3D All-Stars doesn’t feel nearly as good as on Wii due to controls, Wiimote was great for this kind of game.
This was THE game I was waiting to choose Switch 2 as my primary console. Portability + Nintendo games beats whatever Sony was trying to do with PS5 generation.
This is exciting, the last Nintendo console I could consider my primary console was SNES in the 90s.
It’s really great to see news about current gen games coming to Switch 2. It’s been a very long time since Nintendo had consoles that could handle the same games as other platforms.
I feel that the game is more challenging in parts and less in others. For anyone that hasn’t played Hollow Knight, I would say it’s harder though.
The two things for me at this point in the game (still early game) that make the game a lot harder: the fact that it takes all of your silk to heal and the fact you can’t equip some things together makes it a lot harder since the game relies on skills more than Hollow Knight did. Also explosions everywhere!! I’m fighting and dodging and suddenly I die because some bomb explodes.
However, I’m having a lot of fun! Such a great game!
If they could tone down the amount of bomb-like things the enemies can throw I would be happy! It’s so annoying to deal with multiple enemies when they keep throwing bombs at you from everywhere.
I’m enjoying it but as I imagined the best score it could get for me is 9/10 for the single reason that it doesn’t feel new and unique like Hollow Knight did back then. I may be wrong and eventually it pulls something completely different that makes it stand out on its own, but it certainly didn’t yet.
This is looking great! Not sure I’ll have time to play it in September with Silksong taking priority, but we’ll see! Switch 2 games are looking very good compared to PS5 versions IMO.
I watched the footage of the game for docked and handheld play by mataleao on YouTube and the port looks good actually. There are compromises, but it’s no Elden Ring at all. Even the high speed sections seem better than Cyberpunk’s.
It might be worth it to update the article to balance things out. It’s likely that the demo footage used an older build and that’s why they didn’t want it recorded.
