@KevinP It's more iterative than revolutionary, to be honest. But I agree that it's hard to capitalize on a single gen. In today's dev time, each studio can hardly release 2 games per gen.
It's a high and fair compensation. Assuming the same approach is applied to all employees, it seems like a great company for all the uncles to work for. Also explains why they handle ups-and-downs so well.
At the end of the day, it's all about the games. A console can in theory go way beyond it's 7th year with high-profile games, but the major IPs won't be able to implement many ideas due to technical limitations unless new hardware is released.
If the next Nintendo system is backwards-compatible with the entire Switch digital library, they can release any day now. Otherwise, just hold it until the next main Zelda is ready to go.
It's very likely they would just do a Cloud version and call it a day. For this scenario, it actually makes sense since COD is mostly online gaming anyway.
Mario holding his cap with only his nose out is the something we haven't seem for a long time in 2D Mario, lovely stuff! Wonder gives cartoon vibes, which is excellent.
What still feels odd about the game art for me is that they rotated all the characters a few degrees, so they all look like weirdos facing one direction and running to another.
Almost done with Breath of the Wild so I can start Tears of the Kingdom. Is it just me or some people play games too fast? A game-conclusion poll for a recently released game is kinda crazy for me, hehe. Even if I had only Nintendo Switch to play, I'd still be playing games from previous years since there's just so much to play and so little time to do it.
Hopefully Wind Waker HD will come to Switch so I can compare all Ganondorfs, hehe. It's the only main 3D Zelda I didn't play since I didn't own GameCube and Wii U.
Move a few thousand years back of forward and they can completely rebuild Hyrule with new twists and villages to make it new and fitting for a brand new game.
Sure, they can build a 3rd game out of this version of Hyrule, but that would be a first in the series. My guess is they'll completely recreate Hyrule for whatever Zelda is coming for Switch 2.
I'm really late to the party, still playing Breath of the Wild. I gave up on it a few times due to open world fatigue, but finally gave it a chance now. Great game! Not as perfect as the internet says, but really good.
I have mixed feelings toward Shrines, though, since we're in the topic. Dungeons had a clear design that required creative or logical solutions to its puzzles. Shrines feel more like a hack. They just don't have that "got it!" moment because most of the time it feels like I'm doing something wrong to solve them (such as using optional treasure chests as weight). Hopefully TotK has shrines that feel closer to dungeons.
I think it's fair to say that Zelda's development teams are to Nintendo what Naughty Dog is to PlayStation these days. What they managed to create with such an outdated piece of tech is amazing.
Only 1, red and black if I'm not mistaken. Although I love my Switch, I miss Nintendo portables. They used to have the most creative games due to their hardware limits, and at the same time they felt great because the screen was small and low-res.
Even a closed scene in a classroom with a few generic students had FPS issues to the point that students move their legs like robots. The textures still look awful and they said nothing about that. The note on "reduced people and pokémon in towns and wild" gives me hope, though. They still need to throw their engine in the recycle bin and either build a new one or use Unreal/Unity, but at least they're trying within their limits.
It's Zelda and $70 is the new industry standard, but Nintendo Switch as a hardware is really outdated, so I don't know... I guess I'd pay it for Zelda, but not for any other Switch game.
Well, it has Pokémon in the name and it's a "traditional" game. Even if it was just a tech demo it would sell insane amounts, to be honest. But I wonder what will be the impact of releasing a game at this state in the long run. Personally, I won't ever again buy a Pokémon game until it's cheaper and proved by reviews to have at least an OK level of quality. I don't think I've been as disappointed at a game as I was with Violet due to its awful graphics, animation and performance.
I won't have a team strong enough for these battles in quite some time since I only have time to play on weekends. I wish they would slow down and extend these events for at least a couple of months.
I came here looking for stores to change my outfit. It's surprising that it's impossible given the customization options available in Sword/Shield. Well, Game Freak never ceases to disappoint it seems... Minor issue, though.
I love Pokémon, but I'm not buying any new games in the series until they fix this and stop releasing games in this state. I chose Pokémon over God of War Ragnarok this month, and honestly I regret it. It's fun, but painful to play at the same time.
Game Freak deserves all the criticism. Any other studio would have been completely destroyed for releasing something in this state.
Odyssey is awesome, but it's too much. It's the first 3D Mario that I didn't collect everything due to the huge number of moons. I enjoyed it a lot but I want something new.
Also, I loved the idea of having Yoshi as a partner similar to Super Mario World.
As for when it'll release, unless Nintendo has two 3D Mario games in the pipeline it'll definitely launch with the new console to display its capabilities.
Nintendo's games are too brilliant to be F2P, unless they came up with a new series specifically made for this model. Live service on the other hand would work like a charm for Splatoon, Mario Kart and Animal Crossing - the last two already have one entry per gen anyway, so keep the updates coming and we'll all appreciate it.
I love both games! The creativity of Phantom Hourglass makes it a fantastic game IMO. I remember a puzzle that required us to close the DS and open it again, that took me a while to figure out.
Seems to be an interesting game, but after reading spoilers about the story I gotta say it's not for everyone. Seriously heavy stuff... Not sure how it plays out in this art style, so maybe it doesn't have the same impact as if it were realism, but still, if you're facing mental health issues this game might not be for you.
Unpopular opinion, but they should drop turn-based combat. Catching and evolving Pokémon is such a great experience that we already had Go, Let's Go and Legends Arceus dedicated to them over battles. Turn-based is great for strategy games, not so much for pretend-to-choose-actions-while-choosing-the-same-one-over-and-over-again mechanics. I'd rather throw different party Pokémon at different wild Pokémon at once and watch the battles unfold in real time, just choosing actions when the AI choices aren't good enough.
In summary, expand the real time exploration and catching mechanics of Legends Arceus to battles and I'll be really happy. Of course it won't happen, but one can dream.
I rarely pre-order something, but I haven't been able to do it on Switch yet. I did try to pre-order Triangle Strategy since I was already hooked from the demo after playing it a few times, but Nintendo wanted me to pay by the end of February, even though the game would launch in March. So, I canceled my pre-order and just bought the game on release day. Same price, played on launch day, but managed to properly organize my finances.
Edit: Btw, Kate, we should be talking about this new(-ish) trend of offering demos for new releases. I gotta say, I'm enjoying this approach to get a feel of the game to decide my purchase.
They should start each gen with new protagonists to keep the anime fresh and welcoming to new audiences.
Ash is a nostalgic character for me, since I watched the first few seasons as a kid, but it's crazy he is still around as a kid instead of as a Gym Leader or something.
I suck at finishing games. I often end up loving the game, then something in my life steal the focus on the game, weeks later I'm not that interested anymore to come back to the game, and a new game comes up that I really wanna play. Repeat.
I do actually finish some games a years after buying, though, for some reason.
That said, conceptually for me, not every game has an ending, it needs one or more campaigns/stories to have an ending. So when the campaigns/stories are over, the game is finished. Every other optional activity I consider as post-game content. So online, often competitive games are never finished, unless you consider the servers being shutdown as an ending.
I already pre-ordered it. Somehow it went to the top of my list over Elden Ring and Stranger of Paradise (you can see how Square Enix has some serious issues with naming games).
It's really ok to shutdown digital stores for older platforms. What's not ok is to lock you out of your purchases on the newer platforms.
Basically, retrocompatibility should be a given. Switch 2 is announced, fine, all your Switch games go with you to Switch 2. And keep stacking up a-la-steam as you change hardware.
Demo put me off a little, I was excited for this one, now I'm not sure if it's for me...
Battles are as good as I could expect, no trouble there. I also love the art design. The main issue is the pace: it's extremely slow. Takes forever to reach the next battle.
Also VO has some weird acting and they make the long story segments even slower. We can read the text faster. Never thought I would say this for a game, but they should have kept VO only on specific importat events.
I pretty much use a single Pokémon for 90%+ of the battles, so Exp Share on from the start has been a blessing since it was introduced. At least I see the evolutions of different Pokémon in my party.
That said, Game Freak could add it as an option for others who may enjoy the grinding that I find boring. Most games don't really offer optional quality-of-life enhancements, so I suppose that's their excuse.
I would if they were actual ports, even though I already own all the games on PlayStation. Too bad Square Enix didn't realize how popular Kingdom Hearts is.
I know KH3 wouldn't run on Switch without some serious optimizations, but still... So sad that a series that is a perfect match for Nintendo is released this late as Cloud versions.
If they were native, I'd buy it all again on Switch to play on the go.
Hey @AlexOlney, I didn't watch the video yet, so maybe you already answered this question, but is it a good game for those new to Metroid? I liked what I've seen so far, but never played any Metroid game before.
I didn't give this controller much of a thought before. Now I'm starting to think it would be really cool to play Ocarina of Time with a N64 controller for the first time.
@Specter_of-the_OLED Well, PlayStation numbers their consoles since the beginning and customers are not confused about it. Perhaps Wii U was a poor name, but I don't think naming it Nintendo Switch 2 would necessarily mean Nintendoomed.
Either way, they can name it whatever they want as long as it's a hybrid console with their games on it, including backwards compatibility, hehe. =)
The only thing that botters me still on Switch are the controllers. It's like Nintendo didn't care about ergonomics at all, too small, hard to hold for long portable sessions. I hope the next iteration of Nintendo Switch comes with better ergonomics.
And my biggest concern for the future is how Nintendo is going to handle Nintendo as a platform opposed to separate generations. One of my greatest loves about PlayStation 5 is that Sony finally embraced PlayStation as a platform. I can play all my PS4 games on PS5 - I even buy new releases for PS4, since now publishers don't bother releasing a separate version if they're not really using the new hardware (looking at you Neo: TWEWY). I hope Nintendo Switch is only the beginning, and that we can happily carry our digital library to Switch 2.
Instead of sending a C&D, they should hire these developers and publish the games. Call it Labs and present to the world as a brand where talented junior developers experiment with their IP. There you go, happy ending.
