Re: "OpenAI Is Trying To Get Sued" - Nintendo IP Floods Sora 2 Video Generation App

Ogbert

@nessisonett Yup!

I do also wonder the mental damage it will do the future generations too. I'm not even talking about the literal brain rot that has been recorded in people using chatGPT to write for them. I'm referring to the generation that will grow up and all their photos that are meant to be cherished memories are edited and faked (I've seen phone AIs suggest adding balloons and extra kids to photos of children's birthday parties). After the fact they'll all have insane image complexes as the AI sets new unachievable 'beauty' standards and suggests ways to 'correct' their selfies.

Re: The Nintendo Museum Now Has An Official Book

Ogbert

Ok... so I have the Nintendo account, that's step one.

Now I need to apply for the ticket drawing for the museum, hope I get the ticket, buy the ticket, save enough for flights and accommodation to and from Japan, buy flights and accommodation to and from Japan, get to the museum, hope the book is not sold out, buy the book, skim read the book, get home, place book on shelf.

Simple!

Re: Game-Key Cards A "Sales Strategy Decision", Says Resident Evil Requiem Director

Ogbert

“Welp. It seems we're not going to get a definitive answer on this, with publishers offering various reasons as to why they're opting to use Game-Key Cards for their Switch 2 games.”

With all due respect, you thought that there was one, singular reason to use them and were expecting all publishers to say the exact same thing? Why would the FF7 team have the same reasoning as the RE team? That’s a really weird assumption.

Some will need the fast loading times of the game installed, some won’t fit on a cart, some won’t consider the cart financially viable. There are several reasons, all are fine because I’m all situations it’s a case of this adding an extra option and taking nothing away. The full game on the cart was never going to happen for technical or money reasons and the fully digital download still exists alongside the keycard. Nothing has been lost, let’s all move on and enjoy some games.

Re: Animal Crossing-Inspired Life Sim For Switch 2 Looks Pretty Amazing

Ogbert

The 'be your best you' cutesy-ness is a bit too much. It wouldn't ever accuse Animal Crossing of being edgy, but the tone of this makes it look like Borderlands in comparison.

Looks impressive, and I want to see things encourage Animal Crossing to move forward more, but this is too sugary sweet and lacking any other flavour for me.

Re: Mailbox: Switch Game Pricing, Shovelware, Self-Nerfing - Nintendo Life Letters

Ogbert

@nuke13 hardware costs are different, the actual price of production and components gets less as time goes on (well, unless some crazy president introduces global tariffs). We are talking about the game itself, which is software.

Also, everything by has gone up recently. That’s just the world. So 2 10/10 Mario games now vs 2 much more niche Pikmin games back then? The pricing holds up! Not to mention these two Mario games are generally longer, each giving about 12hrs for the main campaign and then up to another 20 more each depending how completionist you want to get. I deeply love Pikmin but they’re both much shorter affairs. You could beat both in the time it would take to 100% one Galaxy game.

Same goes for those fighting game collections, they’re just more niche. They could charge 200 for them, but the pool of people willing to spend that is low so they’ll ultimately make more selling them at a lower price.

Mario Galaxy 1&2 for 35 each is a bargain to me. I think it’s insane people expect it cheaper and, frankly insulting to the quality of these games. And that’s my issue, the expectation that old = bargain bin pricing. I don’t care if a publisher chooses to do it themselves, that’s great for us gamers, but we shouldn’t expect it like we have a right to it.

I’m envious of those who never played them originally getting to experience two new Mario games of this quality! And you can bet the next 3D Mario release won’t be 35, it’ll be minimum 70 for one game.

Re: Mailbox: Switch Game Pricing, Shovelware, Self-Nerfing - Nintendo Life Letters

Ogbert

@nuke13 " I am sorry, but I doubt this had anywhere near the development effort of tears of the kingdom."

That depends on what you are including in the development 'effort'. Are you including the development of the two original games or just the port? Ports are a surprising amount of work, especially when the motion controls and such have to be converted. There are entire studios that make their living off doing ports for other studios, it's not just a File > Export to... > Switch 2 option in a menu.

But no porting the game across would not be as much work as making TotK. However, making both games would. Sure that work has been done a while ago, but hotels don't get cheaper the more time between when they were built and you booked them.

Honestly, I think this is a great price for these two games!

Re: Mailbox: Switch Game Pricing, Shovelware, Self-Nerfing - Nintendo Life Letters

Ogbert

I find the notion that an old game means a less valuable game, odd.

Like, should a new BluRay copy of The Godfather cost less than one of The Minecraft Movie simply because it’s older? Should a new copy of The Lord of the Rings book cost less than The Thursday Murder Club because it’s an older story? Should I expect to pay less for a newly printed David Bowie vinyl than a Lola Young vinyl because the music is old? I’m not talking second hand here I’m talking new prints. I don’t think anyone would argue those cases. So why do we do it for video games all the time?!?

I do get it with games of a certain era, like NES and SNES as they were often markedly smaller affairs. It does not seem right to charge the original asking price for them. But after a while games became comparable in size and quality to their contemporaries. Mario Galaxy is easily one of those titles and 2 is at least the same size, maybe bigger? So how is it the two together for the same price as one brand new game is seen as bad value? They are still phenomenal games that hold up so well, and to many they will be new experiences.

As gamers we so often experience frustration at non-gamers not valuing our media of choice. Yet here we are writing in to a gaming website, devaluing some of the most iconic and ground breaking games of their genre ourselves. Of course people don’t take games or gamers seriously. It makes no sense!

Re: Opinion: Metroid Prime 4 Reminds Me Of Gears 5, And It's Making Me Nervous

Ogbert

@roy130390 I really wanted to like Federation Force. I actually really liked the art style, for a spin-off it gave it a unique identity plus it worked well with the constraints of the system. And the gameplay was good!

The problem was it just disconnected all the time even on a steady and stable connection that could handle more players playing Mario Kart. And then there was no way for the person who got dropped out to drop back in. So you’d go in with 3 players, they’d end up getting dropped out and you had to carry on solo for a level balanced for 3, or restart to let them in and loose the 20-30 mins progress you’d invested in the hopes it didn’t happen again.

If not for that it could have been really fun. Like Triforce Heroes which is honestly some of the most fun I’ve had in a Zelda game. But people also hate on that one.

Re: ICYMI: If You Want To Play Virtual Boy Classics, You'll Need To Buy One Of Nintendo's Accessories

Ogbert

The headset is cool. And I’m glad there is a cheaper alternative.

I don’t like that I have to then subscribe to the higher tier to access the games though. It’s cool as an option but I’d love to have another option to just buy the catalogue as a download or on a card. I’d happily take a key card even. I know that’s how GC games and the controller work etc, but this one just feels different somehow?

It’s a shame because I think there was a period where this would have been made akin to the ‘mini’ consoles with the games built into it as a standalone machine. It being tied to the subscription is a sign of the (bad) times we live in I guess.

Re: Virtual Boy Is Being Added To Nintendo Switch Online

Ogbert

The only thing I don't like is that the games require the expansion pack. So to use the accessory I need to not just be subscribed but subscribed to the higher tier. I get it, but the option to buy a card/download bundle of the games would be welcome too.

Re: Nintendo's Patent On 'Sub Characters' Could Have Some Dire Ramifications

Ogbert

@Jujuman I understand how patents work and read up on applying for them, what that grants you and then how to take legal action.

Owning a patent merely gives to the ability to take legal action by legally registering the sole rights to that thing to you for a certain period of time, it is not the legal action itself and it is up to the patent owner to take legal action if desired.

You don't have to take legal action at all. For example EA have patented the ping system in Apex Legends and then declared it freely available as part of an accessibility patent pledge. They did that not for selfish reasons but to stop anyone else patenting it and trying to stop others using it. Bioware on the other hand patented the dialogue wheel used in their conversation trees, which is why most other studios still use list options.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Direct September Predictions - What Do You Hope To See?

Ogbert

A release date for Metroid Prime 4 will happen I think. Some more info on the Splatoon spin-off seems a sure fire too. Maybe Tomodatchi Life and Rhythm Heaven too.

What I'd like to see? I'd like to see the revival of Air Riders being the start of some long forgotten IPs returning. F-Zero obviously, but I'd love to see a new Kururin, Doshin or even just some remakes. But I doubt that will happen.

I saw rumours of Animal Crossing a while back, honestly I don't know about that but it'd be welcome. Hopefully something new and not half an hour of HD remakes of old niche JRPGs, Monster Hunter DLCs and Dragon Quest/Final Fantasy remasters. i mean I don't begrudge the fans those things, but sometimes it feels like they take over the Direct.

Re: Nintendo's Patent On 'Sub Characters' Could Have Some Dire Ramifications

Ogbert

Owning a patent and acting upon it are two different things, but I do agree this is too broad to patent.

I don't believe Nintendo has any intention to use this patent against all the games that use it. They want to take down Palworld because Palworld, despite current grumblings about the name, launched themselves as "Pokemon with guns" and made a bunch of Pals that looked really close to Pokemon as part of the parody.

Pokemon is worth billions but it doesn't stay that way if you don't protect it. There are a lot of people who might see Palworld and think it's Pokemon, see the guns and decide to not let their kid have Pokemon anymore.

That's the entirety of this issue. They aren't going after TemTem and Cassette Beasts etc for the catch mechanic, they won't go after Elden Ring and all that for this sub character mechanic, because those games are not a problem to their reputation and never will be.

Re: Hollow Knight: Silksong's Upcoming Patch Will Nerf The Difficulty In Certain Areas

Ogbert

@SpaceboyScreams I don't agree with the way they expressed it, but I don't think wanting difficulty options is selfish. Also it takes away nothing, Celeste is still known as one of the toughest platformers out there yet they give you the options to jump as many times as possible, slow time and be completely invincible. It still defaults to the harder platformer and it takes away nothing from those who want that nor the dev's intended vission.

It actually just opens the game up to more people, and allows more people to experience the game in a way they are able to enjoy. Celeste has a lovely extra narrative layer about mental health, you don't need the difficulty to be that high to appreciate that. I'd argue that Silksong and Hollow Knight's deep lore is the same. It's a shame to lock it off to people who can't do the higher difficulty.

And lets also not forget difficulty settings are not just for those who don't want to learn and hone their skills, they are essential accessibility tools. Not everyone is physically capable of say pressing buttons in time due to the restraints of their own physical body, a thing that no amount of practice will overcome. Adding things like the slow time option in Celeste, yeah it makes the game easier for those who want to cheese it, but it also make it actually playable for many others who would be locked out without it.

I don't want to speak for Team Cherry, but I do image that whilst yeah they want people to experience the beautifully crafted game as they built it, they also want as many people to enjoy it as they can. Hence this update and hence the low asking price.

I've worked in games and people often misread the final product for the original intent, especially when it comes to difficulty. When you're making a game you play it so much that it becomes second nature, even the toughest sections become muscle memory. It's actually very easy to loose sight of the intended difficulty level and you loose a bit of perspective on it. That's one reason betas and external playtesting companies exist, to help reign that in. The fact they're changing some parts of the game to be less difficult, to me at least, indicates that they lost perspective on the difficulty there rather than it being a key artistic intention. I could be wrong, but I don't see why they would change it if that was the case.

Re: "I Can't Afford To Give It Away For Free" - Silksong's Low Price Is Causing Devs To Re-Evaluate Their Own Games

Ogbert

To be fair I feel like everyone was expecting Silksong to cost much more and shocked when it didn't. So I don't think it's setting a perceived value to other games.

I do think sitting there saying you felt $20 was fair for your game but now you 'need' to undercut Silksong is telling people your game isn't worth that $20 value though. Believe in your product, put it out at $20 if you think that's fair. Don't devalue it because of another game..

But maybe wait until people have had time to finish Silksong before putting it out.

Re: Ubisoft Employee Explains Why Star Wars Outlaws Is A Game-Key Card

Ogbert

@Zuljaras I agree it's a luxury, but to say if you can't afford it go without is elitist. It's a luxury we should afford to as many people as possible where we can because it's one that brings joy and enrichment to people's lives.

Honestly I'll be blunt, it's stupid to get upset over key cards when you're ok with downloading games digitally. Because a key card is the exact same thing, a digital download. It's just a digital download you can then resell or trade or whatever.

Why would you be so against that option even existing? Your digital download still exists with all it's limitations. You can still enjoy the game just the same! You don't have to buy the key card version. So why does it offend you so much that others have that option? Why should everyone be forced to comply to your narrow view of what is and isn't acceptable? What possible good purpose is there for that? It's not going to help the game sales and the devs who's job security may rely on it. It's not going to help the publishers and Nintendo's relationship with them. It has zero effect on you except maybe allowing you to feel like you're above others with your luxury product that they can't afford now. And that feels like a really crappy point of view to take, to want to deny others something for the sake of it. Is that what you want?

"I just don't agree with keycards" is moot if you accept fully digital releases. And "I don't want to encourage it" is also moot because there is a technical reason here and not having a key card doesn't mean a guaranteed physical release.

So why do you want to gatekeep this option from people based on their income? Why do you feel the devs shouldn't be allowed to offer it in as many formats as they see fit? I just cannot see a good reason.

Re: Ubisoft Employee Explains Why Star Wars Outlaws Is A Game-Key Card

Ogbert

@Zuljaras C'mon dude I'm sorry to single you out but that's real ignorant. Just because you don't want it, and the collectors you are speaking on behalf of also apparently don't want it, doesn't mean nobody does and it shouldn't exist.

There are plenty of people who are on a tight budget, and being able to resell, trade, borrow or give away the game is a huge deal for them. And the key cards afford that where a full digital download doesn't. Why would you deny those people that option?

It doesn't take away from your digital download, and the fully physical release was never going to happen for technical reasons so it's not taken away from that. It's only providing another option for those that might want it. That's a good thing.

Re: First Impressions: Same But Different? - Our Initial Hours With Hollow Knight: Silksong

Ogbert

I love it.

The moment the game started it felt both a comfortable return to the rich world of the previous game and an exciting new adventure in a new area of unknowns. The world is stunning, the music is haunting, the animation is smooth and the gameplay is tough but fair.

And I really do have to second the Weird Little Guys TM sentiment! The world is so harsh even when it looks warm and welcoming that meeting these little bugs doing odd things like singing to a gate to ask it to open, gives a much welcomed balance of brevity and small sense of hope to the world and the task of survival ahead.

I can't see this not being my GotY.

Re: 007 First Light Is More That Just Spies And Style, Launches March 2026 On Switch 2

Ogbert

Also all the "£70 for a game key card???" comments, please have some perspective.

You're not buying a game key card you're buying a game. It's £70 for the game. That's the bit you want right? The game? Buy it fully digitally if it really offends.

Honestly it's like looking at a bottle of pop and complaining "£3 for a plastic bottle? Not even glass?". Like who gives a poop it's the drink I'm after.

Put that fight into something that actually matters. The world is full of injustices to fight!

Re: Rumour: LEGO Pokémon Collection May Include One Of The Biggest Sets Ever

Ogbert

@Kiyata Looking at the Pokemon Mega Blocks sets there's nothing printed there that Lego wouldn't also print. Especially on the larger, more expensive sets.

Not sure what you mean for the elements? Looks to me like it's just transparent blue, orange and yellow for water, fire and electricity respectively? Sounds cool though! Lego do introduce new plastics every now and then. The dots sets saw lots of neon colours added and the Disney Princess friends had some pearlescent stuff added. They don't do it often but I think they would add it here if needed. Especially for things like making Bulbasaur the right tealy-green colour.

Let's just wait until we see the sets before we start judging them.

Re: Hollow Knight: Silksong's Price Has Been Officially Announced

Ogbert

Given how much I got from Hollow Knight I honestly wouldn't have questioned a much higher price tag. I mean it's really nice that it's not that high, but I know I would have gotten my money's worth from it.

I actually went to pre-order it on the eShop last week and couldn't find it there. Kinda surprised that now the release date is set it wasn't even in the 'coming soon' section.

Re: Talking Point: Would Drag x Drive Be Better With Miis Or Non-Mouse Control Options?

Ogbert

Doesn't need to be Miis bit just some characters with more...character. The urban underground setting is cool, it's full of street art and colour and personalities which is not at all present here. This needed more of that, even better if they got actual street artists to contribute.

Flying Fortress, The London Police, Seen, D*Face, Pez, Eine, Fark to name a small handful of great artists that should have been the inspiration here. Not the dull concrete structures that lie underneath their work.

Re: Poll: When The Heck Is Metroid Prime 4 Actually Launching?

Ogbert

Maybe controversial but I would love a Christmas release. I'm still going through Bananza, I've not played Echoes of Wisdom or Mario vs DK yet, I have over 100 indie games in my eShop wishlist, Kirby's update just released and both SilkSong and Air Riders are on the near horizon.

Re: Opinion: Silksong's Big 'Anticlimactic' Premiere Was Absolutely Perfect

Ogbert

Silksong, Metroid Prime 4, maybe we’ll finally get a release for Little Devil Inside next?

I 100% agree with this article. I’m so glad they took their time to make something they were proud of. Something they wanted to make. Too many games are cut back to save costs, watered down to be more appealing to a wider audience and pushed out early to be fixed later if successful enough. To hear of a game that hasn’t had that? And a sequel at that? That’s what we all need more of!
