Re: Zelda Fans Are Concerned About The Free Switch 2 Updates, But Don't Worry

Ogbert

Honestly I kind of thought it was a given that the old system games would run better on the new, much more powerful system? Maybe they don’t list performance updates because they didn’t do any because they didn’t need too, it just comes with the better system? I’m sure if they did list it and then it turned out there wasn’t any people would be up in arms about that too.

Can we all just chill and enjoy some video games now?

Re: Talking Point: Are You Excited At All For Switch 2 GameChat?

Ogbert

I’ll probably use it a bit at first to chat to friends with Mario Kart. I’ll definitely use it when Animal Crossing comes out.

Outside of that I doubt I’ll use it. Certainly not the camera. And any friends using the camera will be reduced to just voices given the opportunity.

Re: Nintendo Says AI-Generated Images "Were Not Used" In Mario Kart World

Ogbert

I would say those are very clearly just exaggerated and stylised forms not AI. It’s also not really how AI tends to get things wrong, like you tell it to make a car image it won’t randomly stretch the proportions to that.
I don’t like or agree with the use of AI generated content, but people are getting a bit paranoid.

Re: Palworld Dev Announces "Disappointing" Game Changes Resulting From Nintendo's Lawsuit

Ogbert

@Entrr_username Whether or not Nintendo is in the right is up to you. But Palworld is in the wrong, they made a product and sold it on the credit of another’s, they appear to have stolen 3D models and assets or elements of, and now it appears they might have stolen code too.

Also Palworld aren’t tiny now, of course they aren’t Pokémon size, but they got massive publicity off their stunts and became very successful. It’s not exactly Epic vs Apple but they’re not exactly a couple of devs working out of a garage, living off instant ramen. Palworld made over $410million.

Re: Buy Deltarune On Switch And Get The Switch 2 Version "At No Additional Cost"

Ogbert

I’m confused.

Are they making a ‘Switch 2 Version’ in the same way Nintendo is, where it has upgraded contents and extras? Or are they just stating that if you buy the Switch version you’ll be able to play it on the Switch 2 on the same account?

If the former then that’s cool but if it’s the latter is that not just the standard? It was my understanding any Switch game should run on the Switch 2 (bar the list with known issues) and if it’s the same account you’d be able to download them on the new system regardless.

Re: Gex Trilogy Lands June Release, Special Edition With Blow-Up Doll Revealed

Ogbert

That inflatable does not look great…and that’s the CGI idealised render of it.

I do enjoy seeing a lovingly put together collectors edition and I do like seeing left-field items in it, but sometimes it just feels like chucking stuff in for the sake of it.

But I’ve not actually played Gex, so is the inflatable a thing from the game?

Re: Palworld Dev Announces "Disappointing" Game Changes Resulting From Nintendo's Lawsuit

Ogbert

Nintendo/Game Freak/ The Pokémon Company, do not care and are not trying to stop people making monster catching games. They do not care about TemTem or Cassette Beasts etc. But they DO care about Palworld.

The reason for this is Palworld is very clearly selling itself on it’s visual similarity to Pokémon in a way that is potentially damaging to Pokémon’s reputation as a family friendly IP. Because they have deliberately designed all their Pals to look like existing Pokémon and then made them wield guns and such. They can say they don’t like the “Pokémon with guns” name now but they encouraged it at the start and they are still promoting Palworld with a picture of not-Electabuzz wielding a machine gun.

So why doesn’t Nintendo sue them for the designs being copied? They can’t. It’s protected under parody laws which are important and good. So they go to patents which are much more solid and protected but actually very specific. There are some general ones like the infamous nemesis system but more often they protect they way it was achieved in the game rather than the concept itself. Nintendo likely patented the way it was done because as people said ‘gliding on a creature’ is too broad. That means Palworld likely has code systems that exactly match those in the Pokémon games. Which after the scandal of them having stolen the 3D models and just tweaked them, suggests they have just taken huge chunks of other people’s code/engine work and put it in their game as their own.

If they had never tried to be so close to Pokémon visually, it likely would never have been found and they would not be in this situation. Which is why Nintendo not only doesn’t care about TemTem and Cassette Beasts etc, but is happy to actively promote them in Directs. Those guys are playing nice, Palworld came out itching for a fight and is sad now they’re loosing.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Duel: 1080° Avalanche

Ogbert

Ok so that font on the EU/NA one is a 10/10! But the rest of the cover is pretty basic.

I REALLY love what the Japan one is trying to do. It feels very WipEout / Designers Republic. But I don't think it works with the standard box layout / gamecube logos and ends up looking a little like a manual.

Honestly I think my vote has to go to Japan just for trying (and damn near succeeding) to do something so different and cool.

We need more bold and brave choices like this!

Re: Rumour: Ubisoft Might Already Be Teasing More Switch 2 Games

Ogbert

Hymn what Ubisoft games, let me see… Rayman, oh they don’t do that anymore and the team left. Child of Light! Oh no that’s been dead a while. Prince of Persia? Nah they dissolved the team when it didn’t hit bloated expectations. Beyond Good and Evil? Actually, not with the direction they were taking 2.

Guess there’s actually nothing I’m interested in from them anymore.

Re: Banjo-Kazooie Composer Explains Why He Thinks Another Game Is Unlikely

Ogbert

There is a lot of assumption here.

Also why are we asking Grant Kirkhope? Yeah he did an amazing score for the game but none of this would be his decision and none of it his field of expertise. He wouldn’t necessarily know if one was being made or not, why would he? Not meaning to be mean here, and I think he is likely right, but it’s a lot of negative assuming here.

Re: Talking Point: Will You Be Buying Any Game-Key Card Switch 2 Games?

Ogbert

Currently there aren’t any that interest me anyway.

I do think they are a step up from just a digital download in terms of flexibility with sharing and resale, but they are a backwards step in terms of conservation.

Honestly I think the only real test would be if someone released the same game fully on the card and a cheaper just key-card option and see which does best.

Re: EA And Respawn Hit By Hundreds Of Layoffs As New Project Cancelled

Ogbert

The line must go up! I wish games had never become big enough to attract all the investors and shareholders and money people. It’s ruining the industry and worse it’s ruining lives.

Do not get this confused, this has zero to do with the cost of game development. Games are still doing amazingly well as a media and industry and yet more and more big companies “can’t afford” to keep staff. Yet you can guarantee everyone above dev level is raking in enough per month to keep multiple devs employed for years.

It’s disgusting and it needs to stop.

[Edit] In case anyone thinks I'm exaggerating, here's EA's CEO- Andrew Wilson's income from EA:
In 2024, Chief Executive Officer Andrew Wilson was the highest-paid Electronic Arts employee, with a total compensation of over 25.64 million U.S. dollars. Wilson has consistently remained the highest-paid executive officer over the past fiscal years.

That's approximately 500 devs on an average wage of 50,000 a year (some would be higher, some lower). So they could have cut this guy's earnings and saved all these jobs and he'd still earn 10 million a year.

Re: Opinion: Switch's Secret Best Couch Multiplayer Game Won't Be Playable On Switch 2

Ogbert

Labo was great! I had a blast building it all and then a great time playing it, though if I’m honest I think I got more from the former.

I had the standard pack and the VR, also picked up the robot suit in the sale ages ago and have yet to build it. The main drawback of Labo is that none of it flattens back down again, so it’s a real pain to store. Never got the vehicle one or built the robot mainly because of the storage issue. Still got the gun built and ready to go though! Needs new elastic bands but bar that it’s held up well.

Re: What's Palworld Dev's Defence Against Nintendo's Lawsuit? Pikmin 3, Apparently

Ogbert

@Psopro2 no it is about the designs. As in, the designs are the only reason they are bothering to do anything. But the designs could be protected under satire.

That’s why they have brought patents in, because they are more legally solid. It’s also why they haven’t gone after any of the others like TemTem or Cassette Beasts, they don’t care about making a Pokémon style game, they care about making a game that shows creatures designed to look like Pokémon wielding guns and such.

Re: Fast Fusion Price On Switch 2 Puts Welcome Tour To Shame

Ogbert

Price of apple puts price or orange to shame.

Look I’m in the ‘Welcome Tour should be a pack-in” camp, even if the Western name is misleading and it’s more than that. But these two things are not comparable, do we even know the extent of what’s in the welcome tour?

I know you need to get people worked up and engaging with the site. But I’m really tired of all the price articles and arguments. It’s just what they’re charging now, buy it or don’t. I’m sure if sales are really hurt by the new prices Nintendo will act accordingly.

Re: Fast Fusion's Switch 2 Performance And Resolution Detailed

Ogbert

@Suketoudara Mario Kart World is open world, FAST Fusion and Double Dash are not. That allows the latter two to do heavy culling of assets out of view and to tightly scrip camera angles and such so that you can't see past a certain point, but whilst maintaining the illusion that there is a bigger world out there. Removing all that extra stuff allows the game to run faster, higher resolution etc. Open worlds cannot remove that stuff because of their very nature, they can't elude to a bigger world being there, the bigger world has to be there.

Re: What's Palworld Dev's Defence Against Nintendo's Lawsuit? Pikmin 3, Apparently

Ogbert

@thedicemaster interesting, thanks! Yeah the mechanics are clearly not 1:1, but you’re right I’m sure on the face of it most people will be like “so you throw a creature to fight another creature”.

Honestly at this point I wish Palworld would take the L, hire an actual artist to redesign their pals and rerelease. There is space for it as a game but we all know the real issue and the only reason Nintendo care is the pals are clearly intentionally ripping off Pokémon designs, and that is damaging to their brand.

Re: Mailbox: Switch 2 Price Drops, Remake Replacements, Pokémon Acquisitions - Nintendo Life Letters

Ogbert

People still ragging on the 3DS’ 3D I see. Also what with this claim that many games didn’t use it? I don’t think that’s true, the only games I have that didn’t were indie puzzle games mostly ported over from the DSi.

The 3D was fantastic, especially in the ‘new’ when they tightened it up a bit. I always had it cranked right up and would buy a Switch 3D in a heartbeat!

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Duel: Pikmin (GameCube)

Ogbert

I never liked that old render on the European box. The Japan one is so much more appealing. Neither really explain what the game is, but the Japan one makes me want to pick up the box and look. The European one looks like every other box art from then.

Re: Nintendo Direct: Mario Kart World: Every Announcement - How Would You Rate It?

Ogbert

I think I’m in the minority but the cow just being called ‘Cow’ made me laugh, I like it!

I knew the free roam would be full of secrets, I’m glad to see it’s not just finding costumes and there’s also a bunch of challenges. The costumes do look great though and sharing where we found them with friends will be fun, also a good reason to play different characters.

I do wonder how many costumes there will be? I really hope everyone has a bunch. It would be disappointing if Mario and Peach had say 10 each but Cataquack has 1 or none.

Also loving the silly sense of humour in a lot of these. Dolphin riding a bike shaped like a dolphin. Toad with a helmet that just looks like his own head. Everything Waluigi wears. It’s looking to be an absolute joy to play!

Re: Sony Vet Shuhei Yoshida Says Nintendo Is "Losing Their Identity" With Switch 2

Ogbert

Honestly as a fan of both Nintendo and Playstation I really feel like it's the latter has lost their identity.

Playstation used to be known for the big ground-breaking titles like God of War and The Last Of Us, but they were also known for supportive smaller, creative and plain weird endeavours. They used to fund games like Journey, The Unfinished Swan and Hohokum as well as making and publishing games like LittleBigPlanet and Patapon alongside those other bigger, more adult and serious games. But they've lost all of that and just have sporadic big, serious releases. They killed Japan Studio, Studio Liverpool and PixelOpus and put all their money into 20 new GaaS games half of which have just been canned after years of development. This is why Astro Bot felt like such a breath of fresh air, it's what Sony used to be!

But then this guy's been pooping all over the Switch 2 reveal. Even on the prices, which is rich given that Ragnarok and Spider-Man 2 are both £70 on the Playstation digital store.

Re: You Can Finally Repair Weapons In Zelda: BOTW And TOTK On Switch 2 (Sort Of)

Ogbert

What a convoluted way around things in a way that literally takes you our of the game and into a different app.

Need a new weapon? Throw a shockfruit and then a puffshroom the enemy will drop their weapon and be blinded and you can steal it and do a sneak attack.

Or better yet throw a muddlebud in there and have the enemies take themselves out, then take their weapons.
