This is a surprise. I assumed the BC was based on the hardware being similar. I’m still waiting to see how this works out. I have hundreds of switch games and it will be a bummer if some aren’t compatible or have glitches or something.
1st of all, yes, inflation, etc. 2nd of all, yes, paid DLC, etc. For Mario Kart 8 I bought it on Wii-U, then I bought Deluxe on Switch, then I bought the booster pass. It adds up to a lot more than this.
But still, it wasn’t $80 at one time. I have no doubt that this game is “worth” this price in terms of entertainment value. For example, compared to what it costs to take my whole family to a movie theater it’s not that different, but there is still a problem just in terms of cash flow. This system, with this one game and one pro controller is basically more than the entertainment budget for my household for like 9 months. It’s just hard to budget it in. If the industry is thinking “well, look what people pay for phones” then they should imitate phones and come up with a way to pay in installments or something…
I think unfortunately that I cannot get this at launch. At $449 the console itself is already a bit more than I was hoping for. But with $80 for Mario Kart… and I basically want the new pro controller… and I definitely want Cyberpunk… I mean just getting things going on this console is going to run me over $700 after tax. What I will have to do is create something of a savings account for a major purchase like this and maybe I can hopefully afford a console and several games by Christmas.
BTW, this will be the first Nintendo console I don’t get at launch since the N64 when I was 10 years old (I had to wait for Christmas then too, haha). Yeah, responsible adult finances are a drag sometimes!
Whoa, a trilogy?! I didn’t expect that kind of commitment up front. This could be good, I suppose. I always thought it sounded hard to get an epic Zelda feel into one standard movie length. I think I made a comment to that effect on this site a long time ago. (Not that anyone would remember of course!)
New 3D Mario, Mario Kart 9, other first part games (Splatoon is a good guess, but it could be something else). At least one thing that’s a real surprise.
Ports of some much wanted 3rd party games (I have a personal list of about 5 that I’d really like to get; I’d be excited if they showed two of them).
Price and release schedule information.
Clarification about the power and capabilities of the machine.
The games are the most important thing to me by far.
@larryisaman yeah I mean that’s true but… I’m not sure the 3DS is the best comparison. That was a handheld, which have always been an adjunct to the main platform. The Switch is the main platform, properly a successor to the Wii-U (that also happens to take over the functions of the handhelds). It would be like saying they continued to release games for the game boy after the N64 came out. They weren’t direct competitors.
But anyway I don’t want to go on and on about that because I agree with your main point - a system as successful as the Switch is not going to have its software pipeline shut off over night. Nevertheless I still think it’s strange. This direct could be interpreted as an implicit argument against getting a switch 2 at launch. Why would Nintendo want to deliver that message in such a high profile way?
I can’t imagine that Nintendo is going to announce a bunch of games to release over the next few months, and then turn around next week and announce that the switch 2 is releasing in June and that a different batch of first party games will be coming out with that, over the same next few months. That would seem to suggest that the switch 2 may be launching later than many assume… but then again I obviously have no idea what’s going on.
I am stunned. I made fun of this rumor. I have to eat crow.
Edit: I do think that this makes the idea of Switch 2 launching in June less likely. Which means that the other rumor, which I said sounded true, may in fact be false! I may have to eat double crow!
This rumor sounds true. It just the kind of common sense, nothing too crazy quality that seems like real information. If you were making this up, why wouldn’t you make up something more exciting than just what like 50% of people were guessing anyway? I do agree however that big developers/publishers must have had dev kits for some time. Probably it was only indies at GDC that were held to this “dev-kits in June” timeline.
Edit: I see a lot of people saying Nintendo would/should want third parties at launch at that they wouldn’t launch with no third parties. But is that what this rumor actually says? The article says first party games would get “top priority” not that no third parties will be allowed at all. I think the software phases for the launch year make perfect sense to me and sound very plausible.
Starfield and Elder Scrolls on Switch 2?Dare I hope??
Realistically I think Starfield is a likely candidate. They need to get that on as many platforms as possible I imagine to try and boost the disappointing sales. It’s not like it’s a system seller or anything. I also think if the rumors about an Oblivion remake are true that would be a likely one to see. But I imagine ES6 whenever it eventually comes out (last I heard was 2028 at the earliest) will probably be too much for the S2 to handle.
I hope the game comes out someday and I hope it’s good. But I can’t imagine how this game could be a business success at this point. I actually don’t understand how some of these companies continue to operate with so few real releases. Like Team Cherry, Yacht Club, I’m sure there are others… they have one excellent game and then I guess they’re trying to make the perfect sequel and it just takes so long to come out… but I really do hope that it all works out and we get whole franchises out of these properties! I just feel sometime soon we may start hearing that these companies are closing…
I can’t imagine this happening. This rumor is almost laugh-out-loud funny to me. It’s like “I know my birthday is next week and all but can I please get a present today??”
Whoa actually I am shocked at how low that number is. This game was on the SNES, the pS1, the DS, and smartphones. Even ignoring the phones the consoles alone have sold over three hundred million hardware units, meaning Chrono Trigger has an attach rate of just 1.66%. No wonder they’re not in any hurry to rerelease it!
@KITG_GROUP I didn’t play the first Pandemonium but Pandemonium 2 is a guilty pleasure favorite of mine. It is really pretty trippy and psychedelic. It’s whole vibe is cool and unique which makes up for the sort of generic gameplay to me.
On topic, poor, poor Croc. He’s gonna lose out to the new 3D Mario again.
I consider it obvious that Metroid Prime 4 will be getting a Switch 2 port. How could they seriously promote or market a game that is OG Switch only at the same time they are supposed to be marketing/promoting the Switch 2? Not having a switch 2 version at this point would be tantamount to murdering the Prime series.
I mean, I guess it’s possible? At first I didn’t believe it, because I thought this creates way too big of a leak risk. But I actually think people are making good points about the tariffs. There may be an incentive to get them imported ASAP.
So if this is true, how long do you think before the system leaks? I’m thinking photos inside the warehouse are maybe a week away. Units escaping the warehouse probably before the April 2nd direct? Is this too pessimistic? I don’t know what kind of security Nintendo warehouses have.
@PC2 yeah it’s weird. It’s seems like a pretty simple genre, but the indies that have tackled it haven’t been able to quite figure it out yet, at least from what I’ve played. Maybe even Nintendo can’t do it anymore, I don’t know. Starfox Zero disappointed me but the traditional flying levels were pretty cool.
$400 is okay. Actually this is the price I expect. $450 is like ehhh, okay I guess. $500: uh oh. Consumers are squeezed by the same economic forces squeezing Nintendo. There’s less disposable income right now. I literally cannot afford $500. It’s got nothing to do with whether the system is “worth it”. Even $400 is going to require deliberately saving up money (something I started doing in January). My video game budget is literally like $20 a month right now.
Edit: not gonna lie, I was at work and not reading too closely and I thought I was supposed to rank then not rate them, lol. My ratings are maybe 9,8,8,8.
I think he’s unlikely to get the full amount he’s asking for. You always open with your highest ask and then negotiate down and he is signaling that will take less which guarantees that people will try to offer lower amounts. That said I think it will still go for a lot, over 10k I’d guess. There are plenty of people with more money than sense so…

If this is real and it turns out good I’d be interested in it. I enjoyed the game a lot back on 360 and it’s been long enough now that it would feel pretty fresh I think.
No indie game that I’ve played has quite captured the game feel of Star Fox. That said, there are several I haven’t played yet. I’m particularly curious about Astro dog. This one looks quite promising too. I hope indie developers crack the code on rail shooters soon, since the major developers have basically abandoned the genre.
Looking forward to Okami 2 (or whatever it’s eventually called). I don’t know why organizations can’t stick to what made them successful but it seems to be a universal problem. Is it regression to the mean? Industry pressure to be “professional”? Whatever the cause, a company that started with a unique vision /approach eventually becomes just like every other company. I hope platinum is able to continue making excellent games despite apparently becoming more conventional (I guess. I’m reading between the lines a little).

I don’t know. Could be a big blunder for MS. Or it could be the start of their exit from the dedicated console space. If this is popular who’s to say the next XBox won’t just run windows, be more PC oriented and capable running other software like steam? I don’t have any real information but it just feels to me like MS is less committed to consoles as a concept than either as Sony or Nintendo. With AAA game development going through something of a crisis, maybe one of the big three is going to adjust their business strategy. It would make sense to me it that turned out to be MS.
Why would they do this? Who does this please? I always thought the timer was crucial to the game design. Once the game was broken down into smaller challenges it became way less fun to me. Tony Hawk Underground was the last game I played in the series as I no longer found the games very fun. I say all this to say, you would think I would be the perfect audience for this change. But even I would much rather have the game rereleased in a definitive version. We could debate the merits of the game design forever but why even bother with this remaster if you’re not going to do it right?
I’m excited. Two and three were my favorites. Four is when it started going downhill, but it’s still a fun game. Combined with the other remaster we’ll have the four best arcade skateboarding games ever made on the switch. 👍
I feel sorry for the people involved. The best selling game of all time, massively popular with younger kids and teenagers, you can see why a lot of big names wanted to get attached. But the movie seems at least from the trailers to have been made because of business logic rather than any narrative ideas at all. It just seems completely wrongheaded in so many ways. The most I’m hoping for now is that it has a certain “so bad it’s good” campy charm.
@Maxz ha, sick burn. Although I have to say, my Les Paul does still have its headstock, so…
Anyway, I love the look of these controllers, especially the blue. They’re pricey but I would pay that price IF somebody would release a Guitar Hero collection or something. They really were super fun games, especially the first three. Younger generations should get to play them. But I imagine it’s not worth for the companies to pursue a rerelease because of the all the licensing required.
The Switch 2 will blow past the steam deck in its first few weeks. I have never bought this idea that some seem to have that the steam deck is a serious threat to Switch 2 sales.
I mean surely they will bring over Worlds first anyway. I’m glad the article addressed that at the end. I would not be shocked if this game never comes to switch 2. I am hoping for Cyberpunk, Baldur’s Gate 3, and Eldenring though.
The only time I’ve traded in a console was when I traded my original GBA so I could upgrade to an SP. This could be a similar kind of situation in a way but I think I’ll hold off at least for a while because there are some unknowns, like can OG joy cons sync to switch 2? If so that’s several free controllers I won’t want to get rid of. Also, when playing Switch 1 games, can the switch 2 interact with the original switch for multiplayer? Also I do have Ring Fit so… but even with all that set aside, I think I would be more likely to give the switch to my kids than to sell it. I think for me, trading it in is unlikely.
This is the one I’ve been wanting to play. Isn’t this based on ys 4? Or is it 5? Anyway, it’s one of the ones I’ve never played. Hope it gets a localization soon!
