I played through a chunk of it a few years ago, then I put it down and I’ve never come back. I did enjoy it, but my lifestyle right now only really permits me to play games in little chunks, maybe 30-minutes or less most of the time. Given that constraint, I found progress very slow. Many nights I would venture forward, discover a tricky spot, die, and that’s be it. A whole week might go by with very little progress.
Rampant theft will shut this store down I predict. On the other hand I do think the resident are getting fed up with the state of things. There may be big changes coming to the way the city is managed.
Okay, I hate to be a stick in the mud, but this kind of debate is hopeless. In general debates about the exact boundaries or terms and concepts like this are pointless because no matter what gets said, no matter how plausible the proposed definition, there is a tacit project of hunting out edge-case games that defy the definition. I studied painting and in painting g there is a lot of these kinds of debates. What is the exact difference between Impressionism and post-Impressionism and fauvism and expressionism? And expressionism includes Abstract expressionism right? And Ab-Ex includes color field and color field looks pretty similar to minimalism but minimalism is the opposite of expressionism!?! Or was it actually process-oriented conceptual art the entire time!?!? And on and on forever.
The real truth I think is that these are marketing labels. I feel like at some point someone labeled their game a remake and then some one else labeled their game a remaster and somehow everyone got confused and thought these were specific concepts that actually meant something. In fact, they don’t have particular meaning and are essentially interchangeable. That’s my 2 cents.
A 3D DK game developed by Nintendo’s own Mario team would be something to see. That would certainly be the most exciting thing. But, I’m not expecting it. I think it’s more possible that DK could appear as a character in the next 3D Mario. I also think another 2D DK game is very possible. That’s all I can see.
Some of the games on my wishlist are on here. I may pick up Flynn son of crimson. I’ve heard it’s just okay but the art looks good and I like that kind of game usually.
I can’t afford it, don’t have space for it, my toddler age children will destroy it, and my wife will definitely be furious, so of course I’m going to buy it anyway. I mean obviously I have to, am I right? Y’all know what I’m talking about.
A lot of older games have good lengths. Metal Gear Solid, Symhony of the Night, Ocarina of Time, etc. The majority of modern game seem too long to me. The pacing is terrible, and they do not have enough ideas to sustain the length. Even ones I like are too long. Persona 5, the Xenoblade games, BotW and TotK, all far too long. I don’t think there should be less content, I just think they should move through the content faster. 60 hours for an RPG is meaty and comfortable, although you could certainly do less (see Chrono Trigger or Lunar), but 100+ hours is… well I’ll just say I’ve never played a game that justified that kind of length.
The best way to do this I think is to lean into the Triforce theming. Link is courage but Zelda is wisdom, so maybe a game all about puzzles or strategy. At the same time there are a lot of possibilities. What if there was a game like Metal Gear Solid but you played as Sheik?
I found this article quite depressing. They’re going to shift from quantity to quality? I think they’ve completely lost the plot. I don’t know, I’m struggling to put my feelings into words here. I’ve been replaying a lot of PS1 era games and they are so good (not only Square, lots of companies… but especially Square). I believe Square will never be able to get to that level of quality again, for structural reasons having nothing to do with quantity or quality or pillars or plans or intentions. This statement implies that they still have not identified the core problem and will therefore just repeat themselves. Maybe there is no solution, I don’t know…
@-wc- I don’t really understand this either. The story is quite minimal and unobtrusive. It does have a late game “plot twist” (if you can call it that) which I won’t discuss. It’s all pretty clever but also maybe too “earnest” and “serious” in the way that a lot of art House indie games can be. This is still popular in indie games today so I wouldn’t say it’s aged exactly. Finally there is a socio-political valence to the story which maybe some people find off putting but this too is not something I would say had “aged” exactly… I can’t be more specific without getting into spoilers. The necessary caveat I guess is that maybe I’m misremembering things because I haven’t played the game in over a decade.
No I have not. I play the game for a few weeks and then put it down for a couple months, and repeat. I’ve managed to clear the four environmental phenomena and that’s it. Currently doing some of the big side quests. Despite my complaining and being quite disappointed in the game my Switch says I’ve played it over 70 hours, putting it in the top 10 of most played Switch games. I’m sure I’ll “finish” it someday. I’m in no rush.
Hmmm. I’m going to guess that this turns out to be something else. I don’t know, the code names are usually quite symbolic, but in a positive way. This doesn’t seem like a code name they would choose. I could be wrong of course.
I mean, I would certainly buy it… but I don’t believe they’ll make it. 3D development is much more complicated, and making it easy to use but capable enough to do what people want is a big challenge, and that’s without even getting into bug proofing and dealing with exploits and so on and so forth. I don’t know… I’d love to see it but it sounds a lot harder than a Zelda Maker and that’s apparently too much for Nintendo.
@-wc- I always understood the term “rail shooter” to refer to games like Star Fox or Space Harrier and “corridor shooter” was, like you said, a basically defunct term for early FPS games like Wolfenstein, where there are not really any open spaces at all. Then there are “gallery shooters” where you pretty much stand still and move a cursor, maybe with very limited movement. Then light gun games are also often on rails, but those games are usually first person and you can’t move your character typically. And then finally there are a small number of games that hybridize between these sub genres, such as the N64 game Knife Edge and yeah I guess REZ could be thrown in there too.
I think what all this really shows is that none of these terms mean anything and we are all totally confused, lol.
See, I don’t understand the timeline that people are expecting here. It’s much faster than the historical timeline for other consoles. I’m predicting that the reveal will be in February and the console will launch in September or October of 2025.
I’m assuming the reveal is “this fiscal year” because it’s early next year. Otherwise you would just say “this year” right? Therefore, assuming a minimum of six months marketing campaign, the earliest I think we can realistically expect the successor to launch is… maybe September 2025? Or maybe slightly earlier, but would they launch a console in the summer? Assuming this is correct reasoning and maybe it isn’t, that means we have like 16 months more of the current switch. In which case… ouch. Lately many games are struggling to run on the console, and, basically I don’t see a lot of good third party or even indie titles being released at this point… developers seem to be through with trying to optimize their games for such old hardware.
Nevertheless, I’m very excited to have a real timeline straight from Nintendo at last!
It’s going to be hard to pull off, but if this guy really is a big fan, and considering how careful Nintendo will be with this IP, then I guess we have as good a shot as we’re going to get. I don’t think Nintendo will allow anyone to do anything ridiculous, like the old Mario movie. I just think Nintendo’s games are so gameplay oriented that I can’t really imagine turning that into a narrative film successfully. I enjoyed the Mario movie but I would say it was more “not bad” than “really good”. That’s about what I expect here too.
I feel like this whole frame rate discussion is exposing one of those cases in human history where everybody thought we were having the same experience as one another but we weren’t.
I didn’t even know until recently that games in the past were running at 60fps. I thought they were the same as TV shows, and aren’t those 30fps? And movies have been 24 fps for like a century, and I’ve never thought they looked stuttering or whatever. I find them a completely convincing illusion of motion. So, no surprise, I can’t even see the difference between 30 and 60 fps. Even when shown side by side, it takes all my concentration to see the difference. I can’t imagine being cognizant of this while playing… and yet a few years ago I was watching a streamer play some open world game and everything seemed to going along fine and he was complaining the whole time about frame rate. “OMG this game is all over the place - it just dropped to like 40 fps” and so forth.
What is going on in the visual processing of a person who is not only able to perceive this but finds it so jarring that it leaps out at them even while playing a presumably engrossing game? Does some one like that find movies to just be like slideshows or something?
I do not understand how you could inadvertently remove two specific images like this. I’m not a professional programmer but I’ve dabbled and based on that (limited) experience this seems strangely precise to be an accident. If there are any real programmers here who can explain how this would be possible I’d be interested to hear, because by common sense it certainly seems deliberate… BUT I don’t see why they would lie about it. It would have been perfectly fine to say, “After receiving lots of valuable feedback from our passionate community blah blah etc”. Why pretend it was inadvertent? Which makes it seem like probably it really WAS inadvertent! But that defies common sense so now I’m going in circles, haha.
I don’t know what the deleted comments said precisely but I gather it was critical of the FF7 Remakes. I didn’t really like it either. I didn’t finish the first one and haven’t played Rebirth. In general, over the last few years, I have felt more and more alienated from modern gaming and the FF7 Remake is a perfect example of why. Darn near everything they did to modernize the game, except for graphical upgrades, made the game worse IMO. Yet people praised it all day long, despite it being so clearly inferior to the original game. How is this possible??? Truly, as they say, it’s just all subjective…
The situation with this one is pretty sad. I was really looking forward to it for several years now. I think, if they’re smart, they should delay the physical release on switch so they can include some of these patches on the cart. Limited Run did this for the physical copy of Panzer Dragoon, and it was definitely the right decision in that case. I would happily wait a while longer if they did that.
I thought it was pretty underwhelming honestly. And that’s not really because of silksong, which I don’t care about that much (I didn’t even finish Hollow Knight). I just think there are a lot of other indie games that we know are out there. Nothing really showed up that I was interested in. Anton Blast is maybe the only game in this direct that I will probably buy. But we’ve seen that one before… and several of the other games here too. Most of the games shown had that “twee” vibe that so many indie devs seem to go for and I’m starting to find it downright off putting.
I do think Nintendo is “stuck” with the hybrid console going forward. Ditching it would be a huge mistake. I know for me it’s been absolutely essential, since after having kids shortly after the Switch launched I basically lost control over the TV, lol. I would be happy with “more of the same only upgraded”. But Nintendo is usually reluctant to go that route.
What about VR - could that be the “new” thing? If the Switch 2 has a better screen, maybe something like labo could be more integrated into the system from the start. Would people even want that? How popular is VR anyway? It feels like interest has plateaued for now, but I could be wrong.
Well, like all gamers apparently I also have a huge backlog. What has helped me a bit is a mentality shift where I basically accept that with some exceptions, when I buy a game, I’m really just “renting” it. I play it a bit, and I either like it and keep playing it or I don’t and I just let it go. Even so, I still have 200 games that I either really like or expect to like. So the backlog is big. Another problem I have is getting to the end of a game and not finishing it. I have a whole list of games that are in that state - saved outside the final dungeon or whatever; never went forward. It’s weird really.
@Not_Soos As a former Gamestop employee, you are exactly right. At first things were fine but after a while corporate policy shifted to really emphasize reservations and Game Informer subscriptions (I worked there in 2003 and 2004, so that’s the time period I’m talking about). These things were always important, but under the new policy reservations and subscriptions were tracked on a per employee basis, and the store was sent an email every week ranking all the employees in the district based on how they had performed. The lower performers were written up and after three write ups you were terminated. My store was the only mall store in the district. I don’t know if this is obvious but mall stores have a different type of customer than strip center stores, so we were always near the bottom. The policy forced the store manager to systematically fire every employee, 100% turnover over the course of like 8 weeks. Even in the more successful stores the only people who survived this regime were the ones who adapted to be pushy, aggressive sales people. The store manager, and the store managers of all the other stores in the district as far as I recall, all hated this policy and thought it was insane. They complained but I guess corporate had made up its mind.
Honestly I don’t really see why MS would want to do this. Hardware power and AAA graphics are their brand identity. A handheld that could live up to that would be quite expensive. I assume most of their existing consumers would be uninterested, since it would be expensive and redundant for them. New consumers would have to affirmatively choose this over steam deck… a more versatile and quite possibly cheaper option. If on the other hand MS goes for a lower powered machine then what games will they have? Downgraded ports of their major exclusives?
I passed on this and Lollipop Chainsaw back in the day. Looking forward to getting this! I know there’s a lollipop chainsaw remaster too supposedly coming out this summer. Don’t know if it’s coming to switch though.
@-wc- I’m not quite there but I understand the feeling. I do have two small kids so I may get this to play with them, but most games are just uninteresting to me now. Actually most Nintendo first party games, despite being easy, are creative and fun. So many modern games just repeat these brain dead design choices that are just annoying, or are oriented towards a certain personality of gamer. The variety in AAA gaming is pretty much gone. People say that’s just nostalgia talking but I don’t think so.
@Daggot thank you for linking to that trailer. I’m seeing Shmup and… rail shooter? And it looks like there’s a fair amount of story… are there dating sim or like relationship aspects or am I misinterpreting the trailer? Honestly, as a Macross fan I may have to get this, even though usually the Macross games are not very good…
This is somehow totally shocking… I don’t really follow anime anymore. I didn’t know his age or health status… but I find myself stunned anyway. He really wasn’t very old. Talk about a legend!
I have lots of digital games but I prefer physical games and will always opt for physical if that’s an option. The main things that would make me more comfortable with the all-digital future would be some kind of guarantee that I’ll always have access to what I’ve purchased and also substantial price reductions off the $60-70 that is a full priced retail game. I’m talking like 80-90%. I would be interested in buying Mario Wonder digitally for like $9.99. You actually do see sales that reduce prices that much from time to time, even on big games... although never a first party Nintendo game, lol.
Honestly I don’t think either of those two things I are going to happen. They are contrary to the whole ethos of digital only ecosystem and what makes it attractive to companies. So realistically, once things go all digital, I’ll probably just become a pure retro gamer and focus on that.
You can tell this is probably true just from how quiet Nintendo is being. It simply does not feel like Nintendo is getting ready to release hardware in 6 months… they haven’t even confirmed there is any hardware yet. I guess it’s possible they could still make this year, if they go for a very short marketing cycle or release in December or something. But right now 2025 is feeling more and more likely.
It was good. Definitely some stuff I’m interested in getting. Nothing that absolutely blew me away (although I’ve been looking forward to Penny’s Big Breakaway for a while, so that shadow was a big surprise). A lot of remakes which happen to be of games I was interested in playing back in the day but didn’t get around to, so that’s cool. My biggest question is, what about Hi-Fi Rush? That was the one thing I thought we would definitely see.
I have to say, this did not give me the feeling that Nintendo can easily wait to 2025 for the new platform. They don’t seem to be just swimming in great third party titles here.

Okay, I hate to be a stick in the mud, but this kind of debate is hopeless. It’s a great concept and if the reviews are good I’ll go for it, even though I don’t usually like this kind of game.
Re: Nintendo Indie World Showcase April 2024 - Every Announcement, Game Reveal & Trailer
Re: Mailbox: A More Powerful, Digital-Only 'Switch 2' And "Obscurer" Treasures - Nintendo Life Letters
Re: Soapbox: I Thought I'd Clear My Backlog In 2024, But The Switch Had Other Ideas
Re: Poll: So, Do You Prefer Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Or Tears Of The Kingdom?
It doesn’t make sense to prefer one or the other; they are two halves of one (really big) game.
Re: GameStop Hit By Layoffs As Analyst Predicts 'Unsustainable' Sales Decline
Re: Rumour: Xbox May Be About To Join The Switch In The Handheld Space
Honestly I don’t really see why MS would want to do this. Hardware power and AAA graphics are their brand identity. A handheld that could live up to that would be quite expensive. I assume most of their existing consumers would be uninterested, since it would be expensive and redundant for them. New consumers would have to affirmatively choose this over steam deck… a more versatile and quite possibly cheaper option. If on the other hand MS goes for a lower powered machine then what games will they have? Downgraded ports of their major exclusives?
Re: Shadows Of The Damned: Hella Remastered Confirmed For Switch
@AlienigenX that one I have! And it is fantastic and underrated, you’re right.
Re: Shadows Of The Damned: Hella Remastered Confirmed For Switch
I passed on this and Lollipop Chainsaw back in the day. Looking forward to getting this! I know there’s a lollipop chainsaw remaster too supposedly coming out this summer. Don’t know if it’s coming to switch though.
Re: Review: Princess Peach: Showtime! (Switch) - Peach Breaks A Leg In A High-Class Production
Re: Macross: Shooting Instinct Is Bringing Slick Shmup Action To The West This Year
@Daggot thank you for linking to that trailer. I’m seeing Shmup and… rail shooter? And it looks like there’s a fair amount of story… are there dating sim or like relationship aspects or am I misinterpreting the trailer? Honestly, as a Macross fan I may have to get this, even though usually the Macross games are not very good…
Re: Dragon Ball Creator Akira Toriyama Has Passed Away
This is somehow totally shocking… I don’t really follow anime anymore. I didn’t know his age or health status… but I find myself stunned anyway. He really wasn’t very old. Talk about a legend!
Re: Talking Point: What Would Make You Happy To Give Up Physical Games And Go 100% Digital?
Re: Rumour: New Report From Nikkei Corroborates 'Switch 2' Delay Into 2025
You can tell this is probably true just from how quiet Nintendo is being.
Re: Poll: So, How Would You Rate The Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase?
Re: Surprise! Penny's Big Breakaway Is Available To Download Right Now
Definitely excited to get this. I’m very surprised it got released today though!
