Re: Reaction: The Game Awards Left Us With One Big Question: Will Any Of This Run On Switch 2?

MSaturn

I really hope that we see a lot of ports. I want to play Cyber Punk, Elden ring, Baldur’s Gate 3… many others. If it turns out that the switch 2 can’t handle these games I’ll still be getting it - Nintendo’s first party offerings guarantee that - but I’ll probably also start looking into getting one of the other consoles. There’s starting to be too much I don’t want to miss.

Re: Random: Move Over Anakin, Link's Coming For That Podracing Title

MSaturn

I finally beat this game over the weekend… the ending was pretty strong and rousing and I found myself thinking “what a great game!” Then I remembered that I spent the whole time I played it complaining non-stop about nearly every single choice they made. When I see builds like this, it reinforces for me that this game is a sandbox for a different kind of personality… someone who makes their own fun and is intrinsically motivated. Like Minecraft, I’m constantly amazed at what people are doing with this system.

Re: Mailbox: The Death Of GameCube, Mario Party Matchmaking, Tariffs - Nintendo Life Letters

MSaturn

Well, much depends on when the switch 2 launches, but if it’s as early as summer or even say September of next year, then I think it’s I likely tariffs will not be in effect that soon. Despite Trump claims to the contrary, most likely sweeping, large tariffs will need to pass through congress. This will not happen overnight. And congressional representatives for their own reasons will be hesitant to pass tariffs that are two high. The real purpose of this policy I think is simply as a bargaining chip. I.e. China you better cooperate on xyz or else tariffs. Better stay away from Taiwan or else big tariffs! Etc. if this is effective I wouldn’t be surprised if these tariffs never actually materialize or are much smaller and milder than some are expecting.

Regardless by the time this all pans out I expect Nintendo will have already launched the Switch 2 and be stuck with whatever price they chose.

Re: Anniversary: Donkey Kong Country Is Now 30 Years Old (SNES)

MSaturn

It’s a great platformer. I do think DKC 2 is just a little better in some ways, but I kind of prefer the first one anyway because it’s simpler. It’s also important to remember what a big deal the graphics were at the time. In some ways they’ve aged worse than proper pixel art, but at the time we all thought they were unbelievable!

Re: Opinion: No, Zelda: The Minish Cap's Worst Sidequest Isn't The Kinstones

MSaturn

@Yoshi3 I was basically with you until you wished them in hell. But my controversial take for literally years now has been that Aonuma’s design style is bad for Zelda. I wrote a letter to a Nintendo podcast before BotW was even announced arguing that Aonuma had taken the series down to many dead ends and fractured the fan base.

Re: Mini Review: STALKER: Shadow Of Chornobyl (Switch) - Legendary Series Stalks Switch With A Solid Port

@duerer this is one of my major pet peeves with modern gaming. I assume developers are creating these games on PC, and they are inches away from the screen and it looks fine. But you play these games in a living room, 10+ feet away from the screen, and I for one can barely read anything. It doesn’t help that the font is also sometimes blending in to the background as well.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo's Latest Financials Make One Thing Abundantly Clear

MSaturn

Most Nintendo consoles end with a whimper as software starts to dry up and we wait through several months of nothing just waiting for the new console. Actually I’ve been impressed with how well the switch has handled its last year. Despite the many years there is still a steady stream of must play titles. The Switch is truly in contention for greatest console of all time.

Re: Xenoblade Chronicles X Fans Are Once Again Discussing The Game's Censorship

MSaturn

I remember this controversy from when the game originally released. On the one hand I do feel like Western culture has gone too far in its aversion to… what do you want to call it… male sexual interests? But at the same time we gotta get clear about what censorship is. Censorship is when a government prohibits something from being created or distributed. Censorship is not when a creator adjust something on their own volition. There is no actual censorship here.

Re: Talking Point: What Is Nintendo Thinking Trying To Keep The Lid On This Playtest Program?

MSaturn

They must know… surely this is some kind of psychology driven marketing thing. Like telling people they can’t tell is going to make them want to tell more? And telling other people they can’t know just makes them want to know more. And pretty soon you’ve got everybody talking about this game feeling like we’re cool secret agents talking in riddles and sharing clandestine information. Whereas if Nintendo had revealed it normally they would have spent more marketing money and everyone would have just complained anyway.

Re: Review: Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge Of The Seven (Switch) - A Remake That's Equally Intriguing & Underwhelming

MSaturn

I played the demo and I was a little underwhelmed but in a way that tracks with what I expect from SAGA games. That feeling that the story is too slight is a perennial complaint with SAGA games. I noticed it even in the demo as the player is just handed a party full of generic characters. BUT I actually thought the presentation is quite good. Normally a score like this would move this right off the list as there are just too many games to spend time on a mediocre rpg. But based on the demo I’m not sure I would personally score it this low. So I’m still thinking about this one…

Re: Prince Of Persia: The Lost Crown Dev Team Reportedly Disbanded By Ubisoft

MSaturn

Another bit of bad news. I think there are several problems in the industry which are contributing to all these layoffs:
1. Over-reliance on contract work. People don’t talk about this but that’s a big part of what’s going on. They’re laying off permanent staff so they can bring in contractors on a project basis instead. This has become way too normal.
2. Being a public company. Taking Ubisoft private is probably a smart move at this point.
3. Unrealistic expectations.
4. Short term orientation. This is related to # 2. Bottom line, they are walking away from potentially tons of money because they are not willing to wait and let an ip develop. Going private might help…
5. Overcrowded market. So many games… I didn’t get this game even though it looked cool. My limited time and money did not leave room for it. There’s nothing any of these companies can do to fix this problem and it has some rather obvious consequences, which the big companies are kind of running from I think.

Just some thoughts I’ve been developing as we get round after round of news like this.

Re: Talking Point: After A September No-Show, Will There Be An October Nintendo Direct?

MSaturn

I think the switch 2 reveal is sometime after Christmas, which I have been saying for a long time. With all the rumors I lost confidence in this prediction and started thinking we were going to hear something soon. But with September over and the rumors apparently false, I’m back to thinking it’s next year. All along there was this phrase “this fiscal year”. Why say that? How many consumers even know precisely what that means? If it’s this year just say “this year”.

Re: Dragon Quest's Creator Criticises 'Mistranslation' Of DQ3 Remake Costume Comments

MSaturn

Count me among the people who actually found this kind of confusing. It almost reads to me like they misunderstood the controversy? I don’t think people are offended because they insulted American education or something (or are they?). I guess I don’t see how changing the words to “puritan” changes anything about the ultimate meaning.

Anyway oh well. This whole “controversy” is silly.

Re: Random: Blimey, This 3D Printed Hyrule Model From Zelda: LTTP Is Massive

MSaturn

It is an impressive model! It does make me realize how small the game world was though. Nintendo was clever making it feel bigger than it really was, by for example forcing you to take the long way around at times. But seeing it as a model makes you realize… if those houses in Kakariko are approximately the same size as my house… then this entire game world is about as wide as the distance from my house to the end of the street… lol, it would take like five minutes to walk across.

Re: Opinion: I Didn't Realise How Much I'd Missed 'Traditional' Zelda Dungeons

MSaturn

@N00BiSH interesting. See for me I’d say it’s almost the other way around. The fact that there are many ways to approach the TotK puzzles means that pretty much any plausible idea will likely work. I wouldn’t call them “brainless” but they rarely feel clever and they usually get solved pretty quickly (maybe a few seconds of looking around).
