Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl: The Legend Of Zelda

Kiyata

@Teksetter I was not only here in the 80s but also working. And games were quite expensive back then, usually averaging around $40-$50 USD for NES games. I had to thoughtfully consider which games were worth blowing my small paychecks on (considering I made about $3.75 an hour back then!). Seeing a basic or generic looking game box in the store with little to no other info available on a game made it a hard sell. For me, I had the Nintendo Power Magazine which did a huge feature (complete with maps and extensive strategy) on the Zelda game in their premiere issue in 1988, so seeing that made me aware of what I was buying. If it hadn’t been for that, I would not have given that game a second look in such a basic box. And I should note that I typically bought my games at Toys R Us which had this bizarre system of selling games, which had a picture of the front and back of the box inside this plastic flap, and then a “ticket” below that for buying the game that you took to their game counter/booth in the front of the store. So we never actually saw the boxes themselves until the game was paid for and in our shopping bags.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl: The Legend Of Zelda

I almost voted for the gold box because that is what I came to know and love as the iconic Zelda game. But as @charliegirl pointed out, nostalgia is indeed a terrible thing. Whisking myself back 30-some years and imagining looking at all of these boxes side by side, not knowing what I was getting apart from seeing the box art, I would have picked the Japanese (FDS) box without hesitation. Remember, the 80s were a time with no internet. In fact, when this game debuted, that was the beginning of Nintendo Power magazine as well, and that was about our only hope for good game information! So it was critical for boxes to have game art that properly represented their games, which sadly most did not. It’s amazing that this Zelda game did so well in the gold box. And the shiny gold cartridge inside that we didn’t see till we opened it was a wonderful surprise too!

Re: Best Cooking Games On Nintendo Switch

Kiyata

You left out Yum Yum Cookstar and Cooking Mama Cookstar. How in the world could you not list those, and note them as the very best cooking games on switch?! Also My Universe Cooking Star Restaurant should have been mentioned too.

Re: Poll: Have You Ordered Physical Switch Games That Came With The Cart Missing?

Kiyata

Yes, I bought a factory sealed Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Rescue Team DX game from Target in the morning on release day, and brought it home and opened it and it was empty. Thankfully they were very kind at Target to let me get one WITH a game. Ever since then, I check every single physical game I buy before opening it, by tilting it sideways with a light source behind it, to see if the cartridge is in there. Nintendo thankfully made these switch boxes mostly transparent so I can see that. I wish they were more transparent though because it’s a bit of a pain to try to see the cartridge in them. You should literally be able to see at a glance if the cartridge is inside, like when you buy a memory card and those packages clearly show it.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (July 22nd)

Kiyata

Well it might have been Pikmin 4 but my shipment was delayed 🫤
So I’m playing Story of Seasons A Wonderful Life which is by far the absolute best farming game on switch - an absolute delight to play! Much better than the original versions on GameCube!
Also been playing Uphill Rush Water Park. I know, it’s a simple mobile port to switch, but it’s just hilarious and so perfect for hot summer days 😁

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (July 15th)

Kiyata

I finally started playing Story of Seasons A Wonderful Life. This was backlogged a bit, because I played through both versions almost 20 years ago so it wasn’t a new thing for me, plus I was just playing (and finished) Pretty Princess Magical Garden Island. But now that I’m playing SoS AWL, I’m enjoying it SO much!
I absolutely LOVE this beautifully updated version of A Wonderful Life. I was a bit nervous about it potentially being bad after so many complaints and bad reviews I’ve seen but honestly I think it’s fantastic. It’s a big improvement over the original games, and yet still retains all the aspects I love so much about it while looking and playing so much better!

Re: Best Nintendo Switch Detective Games

Kiyata

Alright so while we are on the subject, this would be an excellent time for someone to add the very old school classic detective game Deja Vu to the Nintendo virtual console. It was released both on NES and GameBoy color in the 90s, and is a fun and engaging game with a lot of nostalgia. I loved playing that way back then!

Re: Super Mario RPG Director Was "Very Surprised" By The Switch Remake Announcement

Kiyata

I would think, based on how things with Nintendo operates, they are already well into creating the “sequel” and I would think they are remastering Paper Mario Thousand Year Door as well. Typically releasing something like this RPG is a test run to see how fans react, and it’s been a huge response. Nintendo will likely run with that. We all would enjoy some Mario RPGs wouldn’t we? 😀

Re: Feature: Nintendo eShop Selects - June 2023

Kiyata

Pretty Princess Magical Garden Island. That was released June 22. This has become my all time favorite game after playing it about 8 actual hours so far. And I have played thousands of games in my life. You guys need to check this game out! It’s amazing! It’s a bit similar to Story Of Seasons.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (July 1st)

Kiyata

@TYRANACLES Puppy Island is very cute! I like it a lot. You get the Nintendogs aspect with this game, but also go on little adventures with the puppies and get treasures. The graphics are good, the game is bright, cheerful, and fun, and I love all the cute accessories! There’s a demo in the eShop too so you can try it out

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (July 1st)

Kiyata

Grow - Song of the Evertree (an outstanding treasure of a game that NintendoLife completely ignored)
Pretty Princess Magical Garden Island (another gem omitted on NintendoLife)
Little Friends (the old one + Puppy Island that just arrived yesterday)
And Style Savvy Styling Star on 3ds

Re: E3 2024 And 2025 Have Supposedly Been Cancelled

Kiyata

In todays digital age, it’s not really needed. We have live streams, free downloadable game demos, Nintendo Direct, and so many other ways to get news of new games. E3 was so limited, only a small percentage of the population could attend. Killing off the event is like saying goodbye to wired home phones, or tube TV’s with antennas. We have moved on, and the new ways to get games showcased is actually much better now.

Re: Sonic Fans Are Already Really Mad About Sonic Origins Plus

Kiyata

@Olliemar28 thank you for clarifying that, and with all due respect, I personally see this as not actually being a full physical release since part of the package is these download games… which actually was a big reason many of us wanted it… to have those game gear games in physical form, that is.

Re: Sonic Fans Are Already Really Mad About Sonic Origins Plus

Kiyata

Okay this article says: “Sonic Origins Plus is just around the corner, launching on Switch this week on June 23rd, 2023. Along with adding a bunch of additions to the base Sonic Origins game, including Amy as a playable character and twelve Game Gear titles, it also marks the first instance the collection has been given a full physical release.” <—- ?!
And everyone else says the game gear games are a download code. That would NOT be a full physical game. Does ANYONE have the facts on this switch version yet?

Re: Mailbox: Welcome To The Nintendo Life Letters Page!

Kiyata

There’s a Lego fan website called Brickset.com and they let you sign in and access a massive database of all things Lego. You can track what you own, want, or even make customized check boxes (like “roommate owns” or “owned but sold” or anything you’d like). They have reviews by their staff as well as fans. And extensive photos and information on millions of lego sets. The reason I’m saying this, is because NintendoLife could do something like this as well. It is still set up very clean and user friendly over there and well moderated. I’d love to see this site show info on each game (even older ones going all the way back to NES), with at least 3-5 screenshots per game, how much data is on the cartridge/disk/download, the date it released in each major region, etc, the ability for us to check mark it as owned, wanted, etc, and links to reviews for the games.
Just my thoughts 😊

Re: Round Up: The First Impressions Of Sonic Superstars Are In

Kiyata

This looks awesome and I can’t wait to play it but hey what about Sonic Origins Plus coming in less than 2 weeks? I saw the article claiming that some content would be accessible only after entering a code online to download the 12 Game Gear games … making this a hybrid physical/digital release but I spoke to a Sega rep recently that assured me this entire game is indeed physical if purchased as a cartridge for Nintendo switch - no download code in the box. That is great news!

Re: Nintendo Download: 25th May (North America)

Kiyata

@Barbiegurl777 yes! I’ve been waiting for that! Also I saw a ton of games on eShop sale that I want by the publisher Treva (Bibi & Tina games and many others), all like 90% off! I’m about to do some shopping! 😁

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For LEGO 2K Drive

Kiyata

The ONLY way companies will stop this micro transaction garbage is if the players stop paying for them. And I never did pay for them, by the way. If I buy a game, that’s enough. I’m not paying extra. My one and only exception is Animal Crossing Happy Home Paradise because that was an entire separate game added on. (And honestly I still think that should have just been sold separately on a cartridge like it was on 3ds).

Re: Current Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Tera Raid Battle Events Suspended Due To Reward Bug

Kiyata

I know gamefreak has dropped the ball in many ways regarding this game and it’s performance, but still, I think their ambition overshadowed the limitations of this switch, and that should shine a spotlight on just how outdated this hardware is and the need for an upgrade with backwards compatibility so it can better run games like this (kind of like what Nintendo did with the “new 3ds”, 5 years after the original 3ds launch).

Re: Nintendo Download: 18th May (North America)

Kiyata

@MeatSauce yeah I had actually never really heard of it being called Puzzle Bobble till recent years. I have bust a move (multiple variations) on Super Nintendo, GameBoy, PlayStation, 3DO (which was my first bust a move game, in 1995), 3DS, DS, N64, etc. As you know it’s been a long time since an all new one has been released so I’m excited to play the one coming next week!
