Re: Poll: Which Was Your First 'Final Fantasy'?

Kiyata

My first one was final fantasy 3, and I spent a hefty amount of money on that back when it came out. Video games in the early 90s actually cost $60-$75 each at release. Unreal considering that was 30 years ago. My second final fantasy game was mystic quest. I always loved that game so much. Why is that not in this list?!

Re: Poll: How Many 3DS Consoles Have You Owned?

Kiyata

I owned the beautiful aqua and purple ones from 2011-12, which I later sold because the screen was too small. Then I bought the blue 3ds xl on release day, as well as the yellow pikachu one. Then I later purchased a pink one, the New 3ds XL, the black & blue 2ds (at launch), and the white/orange one, and finally the purple/gray one. I still play all these regularly. That is a grand total of 9 owned, and 7 still in my possession. As a side note, I also own 5 switches. And I sold one in 2020, so that technically means I’ve owned 6. 🤔 The switches I currently own are 2 new model neon 4 years apart), a blue (or purple?) lite, a white OLED, and an animal crossing switch.

Re: Nintendo Expands Switch Online Game Boy, SNES & NES Service With Four More Titles

Kiyata

Am I the only person on the planet that actually LOVES Side Pocket?! That’s one of my all time favorite Super Nintendo games and I have fond memories of playing that against my husband back in the early 90s, and to this day, it’s still the first one I grab every time I play my SupaBoy S system (that takes SNES cartridges). I have always found Side Pocket to be a nice chill game with a steep difficulty curve after the first few levels. In fact, I have the GameBoy version too and I love it just as much (and really hope they add that to switch too!). Data East is actually a good company that put out some well crafted games in the 90s. Unfortunately they may be grossly underrated by the younger crowd who didn’t get to enjoy these challenging gems as adults back then.

Re: Video: 7 Exciting New Games Coming To Nintendo Switch In March 2023

Kiyata

@JohnnyMind that, and from a business standpoint, game sales are always weakest in the spring and early summer in the northern hemisphere, and to keep from having weak profits, it’s been a calculated business strategy to drop some huge releases in the spring to counter that slump, and it’s paid off richly. Plus in regards to dropping major new systems in the spring, it helps to work out some bugs and inventory issues before the holidays hit.

Re: Round Up: Everything Announced At The February 2023 Pokémon Presents Showcase

Kiyata

A remake of Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver complete with a new color Pokéwalker for switch would have blown away all of these piddly announcements combined. But no, don’t give the people what the people want. Give them junk in a special presentation to make it look nice. Sorry, it didn’t work. We should have expected they’d do this though, I mean look at the half baked effort Pokémon Scarlet/Violet is. 🤨

Re: Soapbox: I Scoffed At Switch Lite, Then I Backpacked Through South East Asia

Kiyata

@Ralizah the stretched pixels in LCD versus OLED are vastly different though. On OLED it is a hot mess. On LCD it’s just a slight blur effect at most. And with LCD it’s cheaper to make, and thus would be a bit more affordable not only for Nintendo but for the gamers purchasing it. Also some people with severe astigmatism or other certain vision problems get very sick playing on OLED but do not have those issues with LCD.

Re: Soapbox: I Scoffed At Switch Lite, Then I Backpacked Through South East Asia

Kiyata

I have significant vision impairment but even so I purchased a switch lite a couple years ago as a secondary, more portable system, and I have to admit that despite text being painfully tiny, the screen is indeed very crisp and looks amazing. It actually looks MUCH better than the stretched pixel disaster of the OLED. Now if only Nintendo could go the way of the 2DS XL and make a basic but large handheld only version of the switch in LCD at an affordable price for the masses (and the many aging gamers with vision impairment). 🤓

Re: Nintendo's Next Switch Game Trial Has Been Announced For Online Subscribers

Kiyata

I bought this, cheap, for my switch back when it came out, and the dlc was included for free. Later they started making people pay for that (which is not even worth a penny), and bumped the game file size to an excessively unnecessary 4gb+. After getting Clubhouse Games and playing their version of Uno, called “Last Card”, I’ve found it to be vastly superior. It has a clean look, simple and smooth gameplay, and is on a compilation with a ton of other great games. I wouldn’t recommend uno unless it’s under a dollar.

Re: Random: Indie Dev Giving Away Free Game Codes Until Nintendo Closes Wii U & 3DS eShops

Kiyata

The closing of the 3ds eShop is just a preview of what will happen with the switch in a couple years. And yet people still demand digital all the way like it’s some golden chalice in gaming. No. You’re renting your games. They are never yours unless you have a physical copy in hand. And if the eShop closes and you get a new switch because perhaps your old one broke, guess what? You’ll have nothing to play on it unless you had physical copies.

Re: Feature: Our Gaming Predictions For 2023

Kiyata

I’d like to see an LCD XL Switch (7” size screen, no oled), you know like they did with the 2ds XL. Gameplay first, bells, whistles, and headaches irrelevant.
I wouldn’t be surprised if another retro Pokémon game emerges with a shiny coat of paint. If so, I’d love to see a modern reboot of SoulSilver/HeartGold complete with a pokewalker.
Also still desperately waiting for a Style Savvy game on switch, as well as a new Tomodachi Life.
Nintendogs would be great too.
I’m slightly looking forward to the new Kirby game next month. Much more excited for the Story of Seasons A Wonderful Life coming this summer. That game when it was on GameCube was one of my all time favorites. (My other two favorites are Grand Bazaar (DS) and Magical Melody (GameCube).

Re: Soapbox: 2022 Was A Watershed For Companies Taking Retro Compilations Seriously

Kiyata

It’s highly disappointing that activision and intellivision are sound asleep. Now is the time, strike while the iron is sizzling hot… bring compilations of their games to the switch! They did it for many other consoles before! People would love to play these classics now.
As a side note, that Touch Me game featured above, from the Atari 50 set, is the biggest reason I bought that on switch. Despite the disturbing lack of touch controls (on a touch me game - imagine that!), it’s still nice to have it, because I still have my original extremely well played handheld touch me from 1979 in fairly good working condition, though it would be more ideal to play a touch controlled one on switch. Developers have gotten so lazy these days.

Re: Soapbox: Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Is The Most Friction-Free Pokémon Yet

Kiyata

@KateGray @EaglyTheKawaiiShika @Nua @Maxz thank you so much for your thoughtful responses. I appreciate your input, opinions, and explanations. This gives me a lot to think about, still, on whether I’d enjoy this game. I never got Arceus, either, so this new open world style is very new to me in a Pokémon game! I will continue to read about this game until I buy it or lose my interest in it, whichever comes first. 😊 I guess at this moment I’m at 50/50.

Re: Soapbox: Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Is The Most Friction-Free Pokémon Yet

Kiyata

This article might be a way to put some polish and sparkle on the game after an endless wave of game bashing articles before. I’m just so confused. NintendoLife seems divided. I was originally very excited to get this game from Nintendo’s own videos but then everything I’ve seen on NintendoLife scared me away and I didn’t buy it. While this article highlights aspects of the game I was previously unaware of, it also pulls me down a bit more on my interest in the game. I’m not am exploring gamer, I’m a warrior. I love Pokémon for the battles, not the aimless wandering. In past games, I have enjoyed the linear method and catching certain Pokémon, leveling them up, building strong teams, and then the sweet victory at the end. This game sounds like a train wreck in every way possible based on what I’ve read on this site. Is it really this bad? I’ve still been considering getting it, at times, but that is fading fast. Is there anyone here who loves Pokémon for the battles primarily, and the straightforward “go here, then go there” type gameplay? If so, have you played this game? What are your thoughts?

Re: Atari Recharged Collections Receiving Limited Run Physical Switch Release

Kiyata

Not only should ALL of these games be on ONE cartridge, and for no more than $40 total, and yes they would all fit with room to spare, but you also get Gravatar Recharged for free if you preordered Atari 50. I was just sent an email with a code for that and downloaded the full game, as a separate title on my switch. Limited Run Games should change their name to PGE Inc. (Price Gouging Experts, Inc).

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (November 19th)

Kiyata

Not Pokémon Scarlet/Violet! The bad reviews everywhere have successfully scared me away from buying that game. But I decided to play my old Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu instead and I’m greatly enjoying that this weekend. When I finish it, I’m diving into Brilliant Diamond! I bought that awhile back and never got around to playing it so without Violet in the way, now is a good time to start

Re: Games Market Expected To Decline 4.3% Globally This Year, According To Newzoo

Kiyata

I’m an old fart and I’ve been playing games since the 70s. I do play mobile games too but I’ve never spent a penny on them because they are never mine. That’s what irritates me so much about people pushing for all digital gaming. If it’s digital it’s only a rental. You never own it. And game companies make a fortune on this. It’s the apex of greed. I can still play the games I bought decades ago because they are MINE. You’ll never be able to say that with these digital games. It will eventually crash the entire industry.

Re: Nintendo Switch Sports Ad Tees Up Golf For November Release Date

Kiyata

I’m still trying to figure out why they keep selling incomplete games. Is everyone that impatient to have something that they get a half baked item just to have it now regardless of what it lacks? If this was given away for free with the switch (you know, like wii sports was with the Wii), that would be different. But charging anything at all for this and then only delivering a partial game is ridiculous. 🤨

Re: Review: Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration - A Painstaking Love Letter To Gaming's Pioneers

Kiyata

I’m baffled why not only the reviewer, but all of the promos, videos, and write ups about this game focus so much on the unnecessary interviews and nostalgia they stuffed it with (pushing the game file size well over 8gb, ouch!), and completely ignored what all gamers want to know.
