I’m still inching my way through Fire Emblem Sacred Stones. I’m about two thirds of the way through, I’m not sure if it’s how I’m playing but it’s taking me a couple of hours to beat each map/chapter. So I’m managing around one a day.

Coming from the more recent entries I’m still blown away by the art style and animations. I’m enjoying re classing characters just so I can see how this changes.

I’m about halfway through Fire Emblem Sacred Stones. I’ve only played post Awakening entries before.

It’s a great bridge to the classic titles as although there is no casual mode or turn wheel it’s not too difficult and there are options to grind on the map if you need a leg up.

The sprite animations are beautiful too. It definitely makes me want to explore more of the older entries.

I’ve just beaten the first Dragon Quest, I love the recent entries in the series and I was curious to sample the DNA of jrpgs. I thought it held up really well and was great fun.

I’ve realised I’ve not played a Fire Emblem game since 3 Houses, and I think that’s been 2 years. So maybe I will go for Echoes or Sacred Stones next, I’m leaning towards the latter.

I beat Castlevania Symphony Of The Night and I absolutely loved it. A deserved classic, I liked how you could explore but not get too lost, the classic combat and the levelling system. It was perfection.

I’m in a more action frame of mind so I’ve risked downloading The Messenger, and I’m really glad I did so far. It’s like ninja Castlevania! I’m also playing a bit of Bloodstained Curse Of The Moon in between.

When I finish that I might give Hades another go, I was more in a jrpg and VN place when it came out.

I have two weeks off work and plenty to play.

I’m playing Symphony of the Night and it’s great. It’s good I tried the non Metroidvania ones first for context as they are more action oriented and harder. But it made the beginning so much better. It starts as a sequel in the old style, then you enter the castle with all your powers - then they are taken away and you have to explore.

I never really got into Metroidvanias as I’d hate getting lost then dying retreading a path with enemies regenerating. So frustrating.

But with SOTN it’s actually a good thing as you are levelling up and getting stronger so it’s not time wasted killing everything again.

I’m on chapter 7 of Mother 3 and it is such a special game. I loved Earthbound too so I hope Nintendo finally release a collection one day.

After that I fancy trying Dragon Quest 1 to experience the DNA of JRPGs.

Or maybe for a change of pace try the Castlevania series. I only played a Gameboy one as a kid which apparently wasn’t the best first impression. The nearest thing I’ve played is probably Dead Cells.

Any suggestions on where to start? Probably a linear one to get the fundamentals first.

I’ve put a four quid punt on a preorder. I always play handhelds and I was toying with getting a gaming laptop as my laptop is a potato. But this will be more affordable.

Even if it doesn’t keep up with new releases the back catalogue is immense, and if I buy the games I know I’ll sill have them if I upgrade later. I don’t get this with Nintendo systems - I have to rebuy the games instead and then only if Nintendo choose to rerelease them.

I’d look forward to playing series like Yakuza which I can’t on Switch.

I’ve just beaten SMT III Nocturne and I absolutely loved it. It will probably be one of my favourite games of all time.

Dipping into my backlog for another PS2 JRPG remaster I’ve just started Final Fantasy XII. I hear it’s a bit marmite but after playing Xenoblade I think I’ll be fine with the battle system. Especially to change things up a bit after the difficulty of the SMT turn based battles.

The remaster sounds disappointing and that wouldn’t sting as much if it was a bit cheaper but I’m still really excited to play the actual game.

I bought it on PS2 but I have held off playing it as this version was announced and the option of playing handheld really helps. 50 hours will give me my money’s worth and I used a voucher I got from work on the preorder anyway.
