There are no subtitles on the Japanese trailer for Shin Megami Tensei V, so we don't know exactly what it's saying — but the video itself is different enough to be very intriguing to Shin Megami Tensei fans.
We get a closer look at some of the demons, and the various different returning personas that we know and love — but no Mara? What an omission, if you ask us.
Of course, the SMT series is much more of a Big Deal in Japan, so it makes sense that the Japanese trailer is a little more... in depth, but a lot of people on social media are much more impressed with it.
Here's the more sedate trailer in English, for reference and comparison:
If you want to know more about SMT V's release date, we covered the announcements here.
But what do you think? Does this sell you on the game, or were you already sold? Let us know in the comments!

The western one was a bit basic for me, I’ll check this out
Wow, that IS a better trailer.
Love the battle animations. This looks so good.
The voice over trailers from direct announcements are really lame
Screw the sanitised western trailer I came to see an M rated game
@LUIGITORNADO Agreed. It's almost as if Nintendo of America felt the need to dumb it down for American audiences because of the darker and more complex themes.
Battle animations and the demons look so good. November can't come soon enough.
Bizarre how they feel the need to go through the basic gameplay features to 'westernize' the trailer in the Direct as if we don't have 500 YouTube channels doing hour-long 'gameplay analysis' videos on a daily basis.
The game looks great though!
Obviously they couldn't add Mara into this trailer because it was too hard
I just hope we don't have to play as this male protagonist. I really want at least the option to play as a girl.
It looks like they're going with the "ordinary person pulled into another world" trope. And the whole ordinary person trope is usually done to make it easier for the player or viewer to insert themself and imagine themself in this world.
So give us the option to play as either a boy or a girl!
@tabris95 That's a rather stiff assessment. This trailer is just the tip of gameplay.
@Heavyarms55 They're likely not going the male/female route. It'll probably be preset since I think the only time they attempted a dual gender for the protagonist was Persona 3 Portable anyway. None of the main entries from what I remember did that either
Plus he seems purposely designed with some form of ambiguity to his look as well. Like nothing distinctly masculine or feminine
Please fire the voice over woman, she made me feel like staying away from this game. She sounds like someone who tries to make something she don’t understand sound overly cool.
this game looks fantastic.2021 is just the year of the switch so many great games. sorry Sony but this is how you support your system. chock it full of great games.
This game!!!! Serious inneed it now.
I was blown away with the trailer.
Man hands down for the developers.
You're right, that trailer is SO MUCH better, why they didn't just whack english voice over on that boggles me. Plus I want that collectors edition!
Man, I thought this game would look good, but this blew me away. No joke, this looks leagues better than even P5!
That is a very nice mermaid at 1:40.
Becoming a god seems cool.
@TheFrenchiestFry Protagonist is called "boy" by the samurai spirit, so at least in this regard there won't be much ambiguity.
The game looks great but the "the visuals look better than P5" thing is a bit overdone, I think. This still looks like a progression from SMTIV on the 3DS ported upward and enhanced for an HD-ish platform. That's not a complaint, it looks really good, but I'm not sure the visuals look cleaner from an overall, poly, or texture quality than SMT#FE or P5. The textures and lighting look ripped out of Twilight Princess Remastered at times, or very consistent with the 3DS game. I don't mean to say it looks as low-res, low-poly as a 3DS game, but it clearly looks like the logical extension of IV. Super excited for the game, but lets not get carried away with hyperbole.
I'm glad there's a better Japanese trailer though. The Direct one was OK, but by the nature of being for all audiences, they couldn't really show the game quite properly given its nature.
Having watched a few times I thought the western direct looked great but I thought a focus on the battle system (my favourite of all time) wasn’t the most stylish way to market the game to do big numbers. I had no idea how I would market it, but this is much better.
Day one purchase
yes, this is what SMT should look like!
Yeah, Japanese version is way better.
I hope the Localization Team doesn’t take so many liberties with the game as has been done with the Trailer.
For example, the Japanese says “The Tokyo we’ve been living in is... a lie!” Suggesting the world of supernatural entities is the true reality. Whereas the English says something about an alternative universe, which represents a big difference to me.
The EN version turned me off, but the JP version has me intrigued again.
@Heavyarms55 “ordinary person pulled into another world”. I was surprised that the Japanese version actually says “Our world was just a lie...” insinuating that the world of supernatural beings is the real world, returned.
That feels much more interesting to me.
@Ryan_Again Kind of semantics, but a nice twist. The end result is basically the same. Someone from one world pulled into a different one.
Now if only Pokémon looked this nice with the sizes of characters and animations (I know it's been beaten into the ground at this point but come on)
Really strange they insisted on showing 1.5m mark in the American version of the trailer and censored it here. Obviously other differences are interesting too but this one doesn't make much sense.
@Heavyarms55 @TheFrenchiestFry
Wait what?!? I genuinely thought the protag was a girl until I read your comments.
@Rosona No. He's just a really pretty guy lol
@Heavyarms55 I disagree, the Japanese meaning was that our world, the world of cities and TV and schools, etc was all an illusion. That the real world was always a spiritual one.
That sounds so much more... biblical, and interesting. Not that the character goes to another world, but that the false mundane world is abruptly ripped away.
