I need at least a mention of something other than what's already known. The lineup for 2017 has nothing of interest for me outside of Mario Odyssey. Definitely not enough to warrant buying a switch.
I could live with all of Nintendo's repeated mistakes, money grabbing ways and pointless accessories. Even the lack of third party support (surprise!) doesn't bother me, I have a PS4.
All I wanted from them was a video game system with a decent stream of fresh Nintendo games. With their handheld and home console software divisions joining forces I thought it would be a done deal. They even delayed the console to make sure there were more games for gods sake!
Yet I look at that timetable for 2017 and it just doesn't make sense. What have they been doing all this time?? I practically skipped the last generation for the same reason. It seems like the company produced plenty of games right up until about 2008, then after Smash Bros Brawl on the Wii the releases just got slower... and slower... It makes me think that maybe they secretly shutdown several of their studios after the global recession. Either that or they just ran out of ideas, I don't know.
I really really want to get Zelda Breath of the Wild, soooo bad. But I am not going to spend £340 for the privilege, because I know that console will then collect dust until the end of the year when Mario comes out. I'm also not going to buy another Wii U, I sold the first one for exactly the same reason.
So long as Nintendo can provide enough of their own games for Switch, I wouldn't care at all if it gets no third party support. Now that their portable and home console dev teams will be focusing on one platform for the first time, it's a very real possibility.
Looks great! I haven't posted here in a while 'cause Nintendo has effectively been dead to me since the Wii U came along, but this three minute video just showed me that they still have a heartbeat.
Sleek design, clear message, sensible name... they're basically reversing all the mistakes they made with Wii U, AND by combining their portable and home console development studios it should get a decent stream of quality games.
I don't expect third party support to match PS4/Xbox levels for second, or that this machine will have the power of either of them. That doesn't bother me in the slightest, so long as Nintendo produce enough games of their own, it's a done deal.
This is tragic. He must have been under so much stress, which I'm sure played a part in his death. I've been a big critic of his in the last few years, but I would never wish this on anyone. Although I'm not a fan of the WiiU, he did helm the Wii and DS years which truely were a 'revolution', and two of my all time favourite gaming machines. He was also a kind boss from what I've heard, very generous towards his staff.
First smart thing I've heard Nintendo doing in a long time, even if it wasn't successful. I don't see why they didn't go to someone else though, there's plenty of racing game devs out there. I get it if they're protective of their IPs when lending them out, but can the result really be worse than just letting them get forgotten completely?
To sum up...
They pissed off the Metroid fans.
They pissed off the Star Fox fans.
They pissed off the Zelda fans.
They pissed off the Animal Crossing fans.
Still no F-Zero, obviously...
And plenty more time fillers with Mario's name slapped on it.
The most worrying thing about that statement is that he's basically saying there is NO proper Metroid game in the works at all. So what are they working on??? What has everyone been waiting for all this time?
I wasn't really impressed with what i saw. Several websites now are voicing concern over the controls. If it takes them more than one play session to adjust to it, that's a red flag in my book. They had a tried and true control scheme. To change it into something less intuitive is just bad game design pure and simple.
Outside of that the game looks very plain, I can't see it changing much either considering it's coming out this year.
In case you didn't realize, the puppet show was to distract you from how little substance there was. Judging by the amount of people saying they liked the puppets, I'd say it worked.
I'm hoping too that it's a handheld you plug into the TV, and they call it the NX. That is a cool name which is easy to remember, pleeeease don't change it to something lame!
If they combine their handheld and home console software divisions, they'll never need third party support again.
I'm sick of remakes, doesn't matter if it's films, games or songs. The last two decades have been defined by re-hashing peoples treasured memories to make an easy buck.
This would be a perfect fit for the Wii U and it's stylus touch screen. Building stuff in Terraria was always clumsy on standard control pads. Not to mention the asymmetric multiplayer possibilities.
I don't think there's any coming back from this.
Xbox and Playstation have already forgotten about Sonic, and I don't see Nintendo giving them the time of day after this mess.
The only way they can keep selling the franchise now is to follow the cartoon with more shovelware, making an easy buck off uninformed parents.
@Vineleaf Yes, there's definitely been a shift over the last 10 years in marketing powers. Nintendo of America and Nintendo of Europe just seem to be hollow entities these days. Everything has to go through Iwata, even though he rarely leaves his bubble in Japan.
It is absolutely the right direction to take. Microsoft and Sony STILL can't crack family gaming. This is the gap in the market Nintendo can exceed in. Not only that, but if kids stop playing video games today, what kind of future would the industry have??
That said Nintendo aren't going about this goal as well as they could. 1. If you want to aim at kids, you don't make your console £300+ 2. Kids from about 7+ aren't interested in games like Yarn Yoshi or Kirby because they look like a story book for babies. (They'll probably be a amazing, but most kids won't even bother) 3. Nintendo's 'brand power' only applies to older fans from when these games were new. They need new IPs, cool IPs that kids want to follow. Splatoon is a step in the right direction, but they need much more.
Nintendo know how to make great family friendly games, but that doesn't necessarily mean kids will want to play them. They need to look at how toys are marketed, because that's what they're selling at the end of the day.
During the NES, SNES, and N64 era, their products and commercials told us it was cool to own a NIntendo system. Nowadays it just seems 'safe' to own one. Kids don't want safe, they want edgy. You can have edgy without the violence.
I'm not sure Splatoon and Captain Toad will attract many new customers, although they will be great additions for existing customers. After this year Nintendo has effectively blown it's load with MK and Smash. They don't have anymore console-selling IPs, bar Zelda which I can imagine being pushed to next christmas or 2016.
It is better than Goldeneye in every way except the story. It even has the Goldeneye guns and the best 3 multiplayer stages included in it!
It's also more fun than 90% of shooters made today because there was more to do than just killing everything in the area and finding cover.
I bought a 360 to play this game in HD at 60fps, best £160 I ever spent.
Looks great, Nintendo need more games like this. Mario Kart and Smash are good, but they need games like this to draw their themes and material from. Without fresh first party adventure games, future Smash Bros would have exactly the same roster as it has now.
Dammit, now I don't want it again. Make up your minds! Do you think now maybe they're looking at the comments they got from that announcement and are thinking: "hrm, customers really want this, maybe we should do it..."
R.I.P Got my first issue in 1995, had a review of Donkey Kong Land for the Game Boy. I stopped reading many years ago but the mag gave me a lot of joy in it's prime.
The delay in announcement may have something to do with Nintendo's confidentiality agreement it has with it's staff. This guy probably knew loads of Nintendo secrets about what it was working on. If they had announced it on the day with fanfare, he would be hounded by all sorts of people and press to reveal those secrets.
I was just looking at the Smash Bros adapter bundle in another article and rolling my eyes. Now I read this and I'm getting one. Just gutted I bought a Pro controller recently.
There you go, a clearer explanation. The NL writers conveniently forgot about that article because they wanted to poke you all with the rage stick again. You poor innocent souls...
@OMGILikeTurtlez Yes!! I did the same sorts of things!
With the combination of player freedom, a great selection of weapons, and hilarious cheats, you could spend literally hours devising new ways to entertain yourself once the main game got boring.
I wanted to love GX, it is in many ways superior, but the controls were just too off for me. I sold it for that reason. X will always be my favourite F-Zero. It had the best soundtrack too. Non-stop heavy metal shredding.
Awesome Awesome Awesome game. Games like this are the reason I will never sell my N64. It's unlikely to ever make it to Virtual Console, and emulators don't run smoothly enough to do it justice. The soundtrack is what I will always remember... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lC-9bP7s2qk&list=PL8198CB48FC4E5D0A&index=37
I'll agree it hasn't aged well, but you cannot deny the impact this game had when it was released. FOUR PLAYER SPLITSCREEN HOLY GOD It was THE couch multiplayer experience until Goldeneye came along, and even then it remained a staple of sleepovers and parties. Super Mario Kart was actually the first MK title I owned, but all my nostalgia goes to the 64 version.
One of the best multiplayers on N64. In the Tank Wars mode each player was given their own squad of tanks. The weapons were awesome too, ranging from cannons to flamethrowers, mines, fly by wire missiles, turrets. And it all ran at a decent speed too.
One of my favourite N64 games. The real precursor to GTA3. So many more vehicles though: cars, bikes, planes, trains, trucks, tanks, boats, helicopters... all dotted over the landscape. Nothing beat that sense of relief when you find a vehicle after being on foot for ages. You literally need them to survive, because you wont outrun the aliens. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyJaaYoWPPw
