This is good news as far as I'm concerned.
Nintendo's game output on home consoles for the past 3 years has been dire, and they still haven't shown anything to come that's blown my socks off. Either they've become incredibly incompetent (I doubt) or they're purposely scaling back the quality of their games for whatever reason.
Either way the only thing that will kick them into touch is when they look at these sales numbers and start thinking about making some serious changes.

I love that they've slowed him down, that was the no.1 thing killing sonic games for me personally. I know he's meant to be fast, but it got to point where it was compromising gameplay.
This game looks really good.

Nothing will generate more interest in a system than it's launch.
It doesn't matter what Nintendo release this holiday, the shelves are going to be dominated by the PS4/XBone.
They could cut the price and release more games, but I honestly think it's too late to make a difference to sales. The WiiU has a huge identity problem.
The floating buyers don't get why you need a tablet controller, and frankly I'm not sure Nintendo know anymore either.

Iwata should go, it would be the best thing for Nintendo.
Sure he made some major profits during the Wii/DS days, but can anyone honestly say things weren't better before he took over?

@LordLzGlad Problem is they're not just trying to sell a game, they're trying to sell a £300 system with it.
To the untrained eye, NSMBU looks a lot like it's predecessor. In fact if you take away the HD and the fifth player, it could easily have been a Wii Game.
Plus Mario Bros Wii came out 3 years into the console's life. It owes much of its success to the MASSIVE install base it already had. I don't think it would have sold the system at launch because it's not visually exciting enough, and sadly that is a big part of what sells games/consoles.
Also oversaturating the brand hasn't helped. It seems like every 2nd game they announce now is a Mario game.

Trials, Splosion Man, Ms Splosion Man, LIMBO, Shadow Complex, Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, Fez, Minecraft (only console version so far), Braid, HD versions of Banjo Kazooie, Tooie and Perfect Dark, Iron Brigade, Castle Crashers, Toy Soldiers, ilo milo, Super Meat Boy, Mark of the Ninja...

Obviously they're all download games, which is why I bought the system:
It has the best selection of downloadable and indie games of all three consoles.

Also the Playstation controller is an uncomfortable piece of crap.

Just getting a popular MMO running on a console would be a feat I would welcome no matter what the game is.
WoW would be a good contender due to it's immense popularity and it's aged graphics making it an easier port.

Interface-wise the WiiU would be a better fit than the other two because of it's touchscreen controller.
However the problem with console MMOs has always been patches, and I predict Nintendo would be the worst of the three to work with on it's online infrastructure.

It's pretty sad that there needs to be a seperate store. I remember when the majority of video games were designed for kids/everyone. It was back when platformers ruled the roost and we didn't need gore to sell a game.

It may not seem like a big loss for a racing game, but it's still a cross in the box when weighing up different versions of the game.
This is entirely Nintendo's fault and yet another example of them making third parties to do all the legwork trying to bring their version of the game up to scratch.
And they wonder why they have less third party support...
Trust me this will not end with Sonic.

If they're gonna charge that much, they better up their game. (no pun)
Because games like Skyward Sword, Kirby's Return to Dream Land and Animal Crossing are definately not worth as much as say Elder Scrolls, Darksiders, GTA, etc.
Not because I prefer those games, but they are simply bigger and cost a lot more to make.

This years conference told me all I needed to know...That after two whole years of virtually no Wii support, they're launching a new system with nothing even on the horizon that gets me excited. Lots of third party games that have already been released on other systems. WiiFit, Mario and Pikmin just look like clones of their predecessors. ZombiU, Lego, and Nintendo Land look mildly interesting but hardly blew me away.The controller appears to just be a place to put the map or inventory, and I'm willing to bet that's how 9/10 third parties will utilize it when porting their games. Without the first party heavy hitters like Zelda, Metroid, Star Fox, or a proper 3D Mario title, there is no reason to get one over the other systems. It's just another HD console with an awkard shaped controller.

I've been a die hard Nintendo fan right back to the SNES, but I really think they've lost it now. They've completely forsaken their core franchises and core fans. I'm not waiting for another Mario Kart or Animal Crossing or minigame collection. They just don't seem to put the same effort into their games anymore. It's all cheap and cheerful looking bull****, re-used graphics and re-used game engines. Epics like Mario Galaxy and Twilight Princess are a thing of the past now. It's clear they just want to milk 2D Mario for all he's worth. Then maybe somewhere down the line they'll give us a new Smash Bros, only by then no one will remember Star Fox or Captain Falcon or Ness...

I hope Nintendo change one day and start making those awesome games again that gave them their reputation. But until then I won't be following them anymore. WiiU has nothing for me.

That list is nothing but re-releases and predictable sequels.
Even Pikmin just looks like the same old game with a HD finish.

I really expected more after the year-long Wii drought. This might be the first Nintendo console in a while I don't buy day one.

Lego.
Late ports of third party titles.
Mario, Mario and more Mario.

Pikmin was the only relatively interesting thing, and I'm not even a fan. That and Scribblenauts. Other than that no Smash Bros, no Metroid, Zelda, F-Zero, Star Fox, Donkey Kong, Kirby...
No price, nothing about online infrastructure...
NSMBU is the only WiiU game I would actually buy, and that's not enough to sell me on the console as it looks way too much like every other version.
So yeah... let down. (Sony had the best conference this year I think)

I know what you mean though, 2011 was mostly promises and things we already knew about.
2010 on the other hand was awesome. It was jammed full of real trailers for unseen stuff we actually wanted. I hope 2012 can recreate that feeling of 2006/2010.

The Gamecube controller was indeed very comfortable, it had the nicest analogue stick. But I gotta say I wasn't a fan of the buttons, especially the shoulder buttons.
NES, SNES and N64 controllers were all groundbreaking, adding new options that have since become standard. But I think the SNES with it's diamond button layout and shoulder buttons has had the most enduring legacy. It's quite simply a classic.

Well considering Majora's Mask was made from the same engine and graphics as OoT in one year, and people seem to rave about that game (I wasn't one of them). I suppose there could be a market for it.
I personally wouldn't mind seeing the Twilight Princess or Wind Waker engines used for new games with new overworlds and dungeons etc.

On the other hand, their infrequency is what makes them special. But I think Nintendo need to up their game if they want future entries to be taken seriously. Skyward sword feels like it was made on a quarter of the budget given to Twilight Princess, and in many ways it feels like a step back. Zelda is a series that needs to look stunning, hopefully with HD they'll start pushing the envelope a little more.

I don't believe it will be uncomfortable in any way, Nintendo have never made an uncomfortable controller. I do wish they would make the buttons a bit bigger though, there's no need to have them so small on a controller that big. Also they need colour really it makes them easier to identify. Clearly a choice of style over practicality there.
I'm glad they chose sticks though, slide pads are good for handhelds but for long console use I wouldn't want to use them.

It won't effect early adopters because they are the die-hard fans. It will effect the following months after the hype dies down, then they need new customers.
A lack of Mario didn't effect the GameCube so much because it got Super Smash Bros Melee within the first month. And you're right 3DS was just too expensive.
The thing is Super Mario World and Mario 64 (and Super Mario Bros) were landmark games. They were the kind of games you go "wow I must play that". I don't think Sunshine was one of those games, or New Super Mario Bros, or Mario 3D Land. Mario Galaxy might have been, but it still wasn't HD.
Sadly he's getting old now and doesn't set the standard like he used to.
Mario is still a surefire way to get the casual crowd on board though, and Nintendo need those consumers before they start rolling out other games, not after.

I agree with everything ShadJV #32 said.
They do need more third party games to keep up but also some killer app first party software. I'm talking about games that define the console and make use of the controller. Otherwise, what would be the point?
Personally that's what I'll be looking for, new ideas that wow me. Otherwise I'll just stick with brand X, I don't need another standard Mario/Zelda/Mario Kart that badly.

That would be cool.
I'd be a bit wary since I wasn't exactly a fan of DKC Returns or any of the Metroid Primes (although I'm not a Metroid fan period)
But I know these guys are talented enough to make it. Just so long as they don't make it as infuriating as Donkey Kong it should be awesome.
