What a difference a day makes. Yesterday we reported that the forthcoming GameCube controller adapter — being launched alongside Super Smash Bros. for Wii U — would allow the classic pad to be used with other Wii U games.
The source was Nintendo's own online store, which stated:
This adapter will allow you to connect your GameCube controller to the Nintendo Wii or Wii U. Connect your GameCube controller to your Wii or Wii U console. Compatible with all games supported by the Wii Classic Controller, Wii Classic Controller Pro and Wii U Pro Controller.
This morning, that very same text was removed from the listing, promoting wild speculation as to its validity.
We can now reveal that the text in question was a mistake — the GameCube adapter will not be compatible with any Wii U titles other than Smash Bros. for Wii U.
Here's what Nintendo UK told us today:
The GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U is compatible with Wii U and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U specifically - it is not compatible with any other Wii U software. The adapter is also not compatible with Wii and we apologise for any confusion.
Are you disappointed that you won't be able to use the GameCube pad with other Wii U games? Were you intending to buy one based on yesterday's now-debunked news? Let us know by posting a comment below.

Well, that puts the adapter back on the do not buy list for me. I'll pick up a controller or two for my wii and gamecube though.
The Wii U stuff I can understand but I'm really let down if they can't make it compatible with wii mode, there's a lot of classic virtual console games I'd like to play on multiplayer and I don't want to shell out for 4 classic controllers on top of me 4 GC, 4 wiimote, 4 wimote plus, 4 nunchuch, gamepad, pro controller and wii fit board.
I'll still buy the adapter since it's only a small amount on top of smash and I've friends that will demand to use it but I'm still let down. Hoping for a Mario Kart patch at least down the line.
They better announce GC virtual console games already or they should not expect as Many sales for the controller.
Well, atleast we got that :/
And hundreds of sales were lost that day.
Yup, not buying now. If it had wider functionality then it was a must buy.
No compatibility with other Wii U games I can almost understand, but why on earth would it not work with Wii titles that already support the Gamecube controller?
What's the point of the GCN controller anyway? Who would want this? I thought playing with the Pro Controller was alright. Am I wrong?
Ouch... doesn't make any difference to me personally, but reading some of the comments following yesterday's news that it would be compatible, well a lot of people were very excited, so I'm disappointed for them. Mistakes happen but that was a bad one Nintendo! At least it's been cleared up now
Boo! Don't know if i want to buy 4 GC controllers just for Smash... Will probably stick with the Wii U Gamepad and Pro Controllers for now...
I'm not surprised. It wouldn't make sense for a controller to be compatible unless a given game was coded to work with the controller. Hopefully Nintendo allow developers to make their games compatible with it & Nintendo eventually make GCN games on the Wii U VC be compatible with it too.
I'm far more interested in wireless alternatives for multiplayer purposes that won't cost me a fortune.
Anyone any suggestions? Knock off pro controllers?
Thank you @Damo for not only updating yesterdays post but making any enirely new post today, well done.
Im surprised, but cant say Im really surprised Nintendo reversed course on something, karma for all of yesterdays Ninrendo goodness.
"Please understand"
Maybe the controller wasn't designed so much with Smash Bros in mind but for the Gamecube VC?
What a letdown D:
Someone at Nintendo’s PR team needs to be fired. They always seem to be unsure and reporting misleading information these days.
I won't be buying this now, and neither I'm sure will many others. Smart move Nintendo.
Man, and I was really hoping for GCN Virtual Console. I suppose I won't be picking up one of these soon.
@Dr_Corndog I'm no expert, but my guess is that it's impossible (or at least extremely difficult) to get a new Wii U peripheral to work with the directly emulated Wii console. Since the emulated Wii Mode wasn't designed with GameCube controllers in mind (or at least wasn't designed to read GameCube controllers through the USBs), the controllers won't function with Wii Mode.
It's kind of like how Pro Controllers don't work with Wii Mode. It's a new peripheral and wasn't designed with the Wii in mind.
I'm sure Nintendo is more than capable of patching a few Wii U games to be compatible with it, but the only game they have working with it right now is Smash. Pretty disappointing, but oh well.
@erv i cant copy the text on my phone, but go to amazon.com abd search hori battle pad for wii u. its a classic controller shaped like a gamecube controller but with the extra buttons that a classic controller has (and it also has turbo mode)
They'll need to update already released games if they wanted it to work. Anyway, I guess I'll just buy the Mario GC-themed fight pad.
Not even going to work with Zelda Wind Waker for Wii U? What the heck, that was a Gamecube game!
Well that was disappointing.
Also, to all of you expecting a GameCube VC, don't get your hopes up. This is the same company that promised us N64 games on Wii U 20 months ago and hasn't delivered a single one. At the rate Nintendo works with their Virtual Console, we probably won't see the DS games they promised until 2016 at least. Nintendo has handled their virtual consoles extremely poorly this generation and they're not about to put games as large and complicated to port as GameCube games on their VC, especially not before addressing the easier ones like N64, and (apparently) DS.
Meh, I've already got so many controllers as is.
Though, if they plan on doing Gamecube games in any capacity in the future with the Wii U, this should definitely rise to the occasion, what with the pressure sensitive triggers and all.
All I wanted was to play my Wii VC games with the GCN controller again. Guess I'll have to stick with the classic controller. Unless they ever bring N64 games to Wii U, which they do not seem to be in any hurry to do.
Although I recall seeing some third party Wii-specific GCN adapters, I may just try one of them.
@Don
Wind Waker HD is a Wii U game. Unless they patch it to work with GC controllers.
Also, in before "Nintendo are masters of confusion" comments.
Well, that just made the adapter/controller not worth it for me. I love the idea of using a GameCube controller on my Wii U, but not if I can use them only with one game right out of the box. I'd rather pick up the PDP controller coming out, at least with that it functions like a Classic Controller so I can play pretty much anything with it (even Wii VC games).
I might switch to Sony.
NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I wanted to play WWHD with it.....and just plenty of Wii U games in general.
Wat?! Nintendo, do not play with us :/
Really?
I guess I'll get the amiibo bundle instead
not getting it then... and i was so happy yesterday!
my heart is broken
I'm hoping they see the light and make a firmware update to have them act as pro controllers but chances are we can expect game by game patches so mid 2015 for New Super Mario Bros U support. Get excited people.
Does the controller adapter plug into wii_mote ?
hoping that the wire is not as long as in the picture : |
@PleaseUnderstan The PDP style gamecube controller does, but the Nintendo brand is an adapter that use 2 usb ports on your Wii U console that let's you use 4 original gamecube controllers.
I might still pick this up, because the main reason is it is still cheaper than pickup 3 more Wii U pro controllers. Gamecube adapter $19.99 vs 3 Wii U Pro Controllers $150 now which is the better choice?
on a plus note they may start releasing Gamecube games on the eShop now with this
Very disappointed.
After reading the news here yesterday, I went and preordered the game/adaptor combo and a controller from the Nintendo store.
Today, I've cancelled the order for both. I'll get the game by itself.
Would've been great to have the adaptor work with other games, was quite looking forward to it.
Really? I mean you could at least make it compatible for some Virtual Console games, right?
Makes sense to me, and doesn't bother me in the slightest. The very creation of this adaptor was fan service to Smash Melee fans, can't exactly be ungrateful for that.
@Jonny
This is poor reporting and I'm a bit disappointed with how Nintendolife has distributed this information. To be clear Nintendo stated in the original message that it was compatible with the Wii (meaning Wii mode virtual console), but had to retract the statement as it was being confused as a device that works with the original Wii console. It still works with the Wii U's (& wii mode) virtual console as it is compatible with any VC game that uses the classic controller. I hope this clears things up
Ouch. Oh well. Moving on.
@Captain_Gonru
"it is not compatible with any other Wii U software" pretty much covers Wii Mode. It's possible, going forward, that new software could probably support it. Say, GameCube VC games. But nothing currently out is supported.
This news suddenly makes this look a lot more tempting. I understand it not woking with other Wii U games (it is missing a few buttons after all) but like others have said, why not support it for VC?
No big deal to me, but that means I wont get it.
Someone needs to get fired for this. Still getting the bundle, but this is incredibly disappointing.
@megamanlink
Not really poor reporting. The original article referenced the text from the official Nintendo Online Store. Was worth reporting as that is rarely a source you can't trust. Should confirmation have come from Nintendo directly? Yes, but we on the internet like our news faster than Nintendo usually responds.
What did people expect?
That the GC controller would work on all those games with two L buttons?
It would be very easy for them to update the firmware on the Wii channel to accept Gamecube controllers via USB but this announcement pretty much says they have no plans for that. We will probably see more HD remakes of GC games nobody asked for and neither of them will support this controller!
@Aneira Well, for some reason, many Smash players refuse to play a fun game unless they use a 13-year-old controller to do so. It's understandable on the competitive level where there's lots of wireless signals interfering with each other and input lag but. Other than that, I dunno.
Then why sell either seperately?
It seems like a waste.
Nintendo just dropped the ball.
Again.
But hey, after the Wii U's processor, storage options, the Wii in general, motion controls, bringing 'casual' gaming to consoles, Amiibo, 'New' 3DS, the first 3DS price point, 3rd party software since the N64, Virtual Console, account systems, cross buy, marketing, advertising and promotions are all complete failures, why stop there?
This is what Nintendo knows best.
Well, they can update the Wii U to make the GameCube controller work like a Wii Classic Controller or Pro. It's not impossible.
That's disappointing, still getting it though as Brawl is unplayable with all other control schemes so very likely the same is true with Smash Wii U. Still, this sounds fishy and I wouldn't be surprised if there's title updates for MK8, WWHD, etc to make it work or that GCN VC is coming.
After reading the news yesterday, I went from "not buying" to instant buy when I get my Wii U this Christmas". Now it's straight back to "not buying". I really do wonder about Nintendo sometimes. Only the hardcore fans of Smash will buy this adaptor for this one game.
Nintendo announced in the past that it would have other uses, but just nothing confirmed right now. Sucks to get me hyped up over using it in Wii mode though.
@Lizuka They just said it won't.
@megamanlink
Wow. Just wow.
How does 'does not work with other Wii U software' read 'plays Wii U VC games'??
It sounds like this control option works with JUST Smash right now and they'll make games compatible in the future.
Maybe they'll patch MK8 with support.
Who knows.
I still don't know how you got what you got from that post..
Oh and if YOU hadn't been so lazy and checked Nintendo's site after getting the info, you would have seen this was no fault of Nintendolife.
In fact, other sites had reported the info too.
So get off your high horses and settle down.
And with that projected sales drop to near zero, what was the point?
I wouldn't be surprised if the controller turns out to be something in between. Like, that it will work with games that don't need more buttons.
@SahashraLA
Sorry, but see post #61? And now take your own advice.
The immaturity and stupidity in these comments is immense. Now that I think about it part of the reason may have to do with the GC controllers button layout being ill suited for certain types of games due to the lack of a second analog stick and four shoulder buttons. Technically every game would need to be patched in order to recognize the controller and have you ever heard of this thing called a mayflash adapter its the exact same thing almost but it can work with Wii mode I hear. This does not mean they won't potentially make more games down the line that also use the controller
Seems odd. I really saw this as a sign of GC Virtual Console coming soon. Oh well.
Is it really that complicated to make a controller compatible for games? I don't know much about that, and it seems like a banale thing to me, but from the looks of it, it's really difficult I guess.
The bright side is . . .you get to save some money again
I'll play Smash on the pro controller then. No biggie.
I was only buying it for Smash and that's all I was going to use it for. Not upset at all.
Lol. Sorry this just makes me laugh.
Well, that sucks. I'll still buy it though.
@Goginho that's what I was hoping too, given that people have been running GC games on the Wiii U via the Wii's home-brew channel it shows that the machine is more than capable of running the games. It just sucks that Nintendo seems unwilling (or unable) to do the work to allow us to run them.
just use this for everything http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00LSBNSAO/ref=s9_simh_gw_p63_d0_i2?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=0CDA9BVEPQY3P0Z9P724&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=455344027&pf_rd_i=468294
There's the Nintendo that I know & love.
For gods sake. That's ridiculous.
They should have bypassed this whole charade and just released a wavebird styled pro controller. Basically a bluetooth wavebird incorporating the extra buttons the pro controller has. By the time you've bought an adapter and a pad it would be just as much for a "ProBird" and you'd have an unparalleled replacement for the nondescript current project controller
@DESS-M-8 I agree. That would have been awesome.
Sounds like that rules out using it in Wii mode.
So much for convenience and giving my trusty Wii to someone i really care about.
Of course it doesnt O.o Why is that a surprise ?
Does it come off as a surprise that PC games which are not controller compatible are NOT controller compatible ?
Its the same deal, its an USB accessory, the game needs to be able to recognize and support it.
I highly doubt that it wont be supported in the future or that its completely ruled out that Wii mode will recieve an update to support it by default as an emulated "native controller port".
Sometimes (well, almost always) you guys are so ridiculous, it hurts....
Ugh, I was really hoping to use it for N64 VC games (hate playing those with a classic controller). Guess I'll just download this game from the eshop then. Does anyone know if there's a third-party adapter or something I could buy that I could use to turn my GCN controller into a Classic Controller? I just can't play N64 games with the CC layout.
Can't Nintendo's hardware division get in the same room for once and iron out the issue with their Classic Controller, Pro Controller, and GameCube controllers?
A unified system would be wonderful.
Ok, am I reading this right?
It only works with smash bros on the WiiU and that's it for now? Won't work with other WiiU games until otherwise stated and will NOT work in Wii mode on the WiiU?
What's the point then? I am hoping that in January after smash comes out that there is a direct that says GameCube is coming to the VC and the adapter works for it ortherwise it's a complete wasted opportunity.
I'll still get it, just in case. But I would imagine a lot of people have lost interest now. I'm not too fond of the GCN controller, the pro is much better but it would be neat to have it work with at least some GCN vc games sigh.
I was considering getting this as it would have been useful to use my existing gamecube controllers for the wii vc mode. From day one, nintendo has been making it too expensive when it comes to controller options. The wii u pro controller is a wonderful controller, but has no support in wii u vc mode. Since i refuse to purchase classic controllers, this would have been perfect to allow me ot use my old gamecube controllers in wii vc mode. Without that, this purchase is a waste of money. The wii u pro controller is better in layout and it's wireless, which is a huge plus in this day and age. My last wii was ko'ed by some child running accross the gamecube controller wires and throwing it to the floor. Therefore, RIP gamecube controllers, i welcome the pro controller and already have 2 of them, and they have been awesome to play with. I will wait on nintendo to bring my exisiting vc games to wii u.
Hmm...
http://static.gamespot.com/uploads/original/1108/11088530/2451016-1176411500-not-s.jpg
Well, that's disappointing. Still buying it though, since SSBB4 will be played lots, and we already have a bunch of GC controllers.
Meh. I mostly play games on the Game Pad, so this doesn't really affect me.
I won't be backing out of my bundle preorder, but this is a wasted opportunity. Hopefully future games will take advantage of it.
Ehh, whatever. Wasn't planning on buying it anyway. Was eithet gonna play with the Wii U GamePad or get me a few Pro Controllers.
If GameCube Virtual Console comes out and if Nintendo is smart, it'll be compatable with the Wii U GamePad, Classic Controller / Pro and Wii U Pro Contriller. Unless the game requires pressure sensitive shoulder buttons, then warn me about that and I may think about actually purchasing one.
@einherjar It's more the fact that with a few updates, this could be compatible with many games as well as Smash Bros. It could be something great but Nintendo is once again acting later than sooner, when they are struggling at the moment.
@Dess-M-8 You are right on the money there. If the Gamecube controller adaptor wasn't going to be compatible with a lot of software out of the box, then the controller should have been a Wii U Pro controller shaped like a Gamecube controller.
@FlaygletheBagel I think part of that was the fact that Nintendo first had to focus on selling the system before deciding on releasing games from other systems. I'm still hopeful that after SSB Wii U comes out, and the Wii U gets a bunch of sales on Black Friday, then they'll focus a little bit more on the Virtual Console.
Just deleted from my Amazon wish list.
Maybe they can add it in a system update eventually.
@DESS-M-8 Probird, perfect name for a wireless (read, no wires at all) updated Wavebird. Oh well. Maybe with the next system
@FlaygletheBagel: Absolutely. I actually didn't realize it's been 20 months already.
No I'm not disappointed at all. People, it's missing three controller inputs when compared to the GamePad and Pro Controller. The sticks don't click and it's got one less shoulder button on the left. It would not work for any game that uses those inputs. Wind Waker and Mario Kart and Mass Effect and Tropical Freeze are all perfect with the Pro Controller. Stop being greedy and stop complaining. You all wanted to be able to play Smash with a Game Cube controller and you got your wish. Be thankful for that and move on.
There go my hopes of playing Donkey Konga again
Disappointing but I was getting the controller for Smash regardless as I need a new Cube controller.
Shazbot
Holy Nintendo... And people still support this ****.
Nintendo's controller situation is really out of control. 6 (more?) different kinds of controllers for a system is way too much.
That's very disappointing. I really wanted to play Wind Waker HD with the Gamecube controller. I'm sad, verily, I am.
Booooo
@Hero-of-WiiU Agree 100% - if they stick to this info - then we KNOW that they are never bringing Gamecube games to the Virtual Console - which is going to make me angrah
I got excited after seeing the article yesterday. It would have been awesome to play Mario Kart 8 with GC controllers if I wanted to. Oh well.
Now I'm back to either buying the adapter for one game to utilize my 1 GC and 2 Wavebirds or buying 1 Pro controller??????
: (
It's sad that so many people have unrealistic expectations. If you are disappointed by this, you deserve it. There are 3 controlllers already for the system, how many do you need? You want Nintendo to spend resources making games implement this controller that was used for a system a decade ago with no market to do so? Don't give me that gamecube expecatation for VC either. They pump out barely 3 games a week from older systems and you thought gamecube games were coming soon? Ugh, the ignorance of some individuals..
Well, that's not really surprising.. And I'm okay with that! Because while I want to use the GameCube controller for smash, I'd rather use the gamepad for my other games..
Well this is disappointing.
I think I'll still have to get it for multiplayer, but I am so tempted to vote with my wallet not to support this kind of conduct. :I
Or...not. Darn it! Nintendo, patch this fatal mistake immediately!
That's stupid, there goes the Wii transfer. This should work with everything. Nintendo only offering a wired controller along with this is ridiculous. The first shouldn't have been an option. Starting from, you know, at least 2006. 8 years ago. Nintendo is doing a worse job by the minute with brining back the GameCube controller for SSB Wii U.
How could they get something that was so right...so wrong?
Woah, these reactions are ridiculous. It's an awesome controller, but if they can't devote resources to making this playable with all games. The user base is too small anyway. They just need to keep pumping out games. And not just retail, but VC.
Way to dash my hopes and dreams of Xenoblade being played with a GameCube controller Nintendo... Maybe functionality for other games can be added in the future, but I doubt it...
Nintendo loves making money on peripherals. I wonder when people will finally say enough is enough. I sure won't buy any more. It's a cluttered mess.
That's the one thing Sony got right. They keep their controller basically the same every console. Slight ergonomic improvement and maybe an added feature but the design is familiar. Nintendo gives too many options. It's cool to have options but too much can be confusing and frustrating.
I wouldn't use the game cube controller anyways
@crazycrazydave It would require a massive patch so that each and every game released so far is able to read the USB ports and look for controller input.
Games are made to look for bluetooth controllers. The "easiest" way would be to emulate that signal with the adapter, which could result in input lag, since such an operation isnt accounted for and further stresses the hardware.
This adapter is made for people, who already have a GC controller backlog, so they wont need to buy new controllers. Otherwise, they could have rereleased a wavebird working on the WiiUs primary bluetooth channel.
That way, you would need to buy new controllers. Pick your poison.
Also, the GC controller is lacking 4 buttons. How would devs work around that ? It just doesnt make sense. Like i said, no one ruled out, that future games will support the adapter natively. And patching each and every game to support it is just impossible.
The only thing that could have been done is the implementation in Wii mode, which isnt all that easy, since it still needs to emulate them as "native ports" and i dont know if thats possible, since Wii mode is not just a simple emulator, its actual Wii hardware, which would need to be rewritten to look for native ports over the USB port.
Bummer
I don't get how this equates to Nintendo being evil and should never be supported again. It's just a freaking controller.
Okay, this is irritating. I still haven't played Brawl, and I want to do so on my Wii U, where all my other Wii data is. If I can't play it with a GameCube Controller on my Wii U, then that means I'll have to get my old Wii out. The controller should be compatible with at least Wii mode in this day and age, Nintendo.
Awwww
Well, still, we can use the adapter for smash.
I at least hope the Smash-branded controllers work on GameCube.
Grrrrrrrrrrr YOU'VE LOST LOST MY CUSTOM ON THIS ADAPTOR NINTENDO! Why did you have to be so stupid, the main reason I was buying it was for Wii software and Virtual Console games so I didn't have to buy a stupid classic controller. I mean do you want to lose sales? It's bloody ridiculous!
My understanding is that the Wii U essentially turns into a Wii when put into Wii mode. Unless they do a firmware update on the Wii mode to accept the USB converter, it won't work. I don't see the them putting the effort into something like that for a minority of Wii U owners that play Wii Mode and want to use a Gamecube controller.
On the Wii U side, just about every game I thought about last night would not work with a Gamecube controller. Batman: Arkham Origins/City, Deus Ex, Madden 13, Mass Effect 3, Call of Duty, and basically anything that made use of the zL, -, Home button, or clicky L and R sticks.
What I am confused about is why they didn't just update the design like PDP did and make a Wii U Gamecube Pro controller? At this point, I am more interested in them than the official one.
thats really disappointing.... gonna have to change my pre-order now
@Einherjar Right on the money friend sadly people are more content to whine and moan like whiny toddlers rather than taking in to consideration that the GC controller would be practically useless with most modern games
@WaLzgi That's the internet for you people have a way of blowing things way out of proportion
@Darknyht They wouldn't need to update the Wii firmware if they would disguise the USB GC controller as a normal GC one.
Well I can tell this certainly escalated quickly I can't believe how you people are labeling Nintendo as Ivan the Terrible just for this. Face it GC controller simply would not work with the majority of modern games why can't you get that through your heads?
Very disappointing that Nintendo couldn't make the adapter work with other games. So it's $20 for the adapter, and you need the controllers which are $30 a piece, for only playing one game? You could spend up to $189.96 for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (not counting any Amiibo). Nintendo is asking you, "How into Super Smash Bros. are you?" Doesn't sound like it worth it to me. I will be buying the $99 bundle though as I already have 3 Gamecube controllers.
They always advertised the gamecube adapter as a way for Smash players to use wired gamecube controllers for Smash on the WiiU…i understand people want more uses for it but its amazing how that turned into so much emotional negativity. And its an OPTIONAL purchase…so why so serious? Maybe it's use could be patched in the future or maybe we could see gamecube games in the virtual console soon but until then you either buy it or u dont. I want to get the bundle with the adapter and GC controller and this news hasnt changed my mind because its optional and thats how i prefer to play Smash
Aw, though that makes sense. Hopefully there will be an update that allows GC controllers to work in Wii mode, along with patches for Wii U games that support multiple controllers already.
Yikes. How hard can it actually be to add this controller to a firmware update to make, I don't know, its control cross, stick, A and B buttons, etc., respond like those on a Classic Controller?
This is sheer lazy and totally discourages me from buying the thing.
I have an adapter for one GC pad as-is. It connects to a Wiimote and functions, shocker, just like a Classic Controller.
hopefully with an update of stability they'll patch in Gamecube controller support on certain titles.
But to be honest if you told me in 2001-2002 that nintendo would still be using Gamecube controllers 2 systems later I'd probably thought you were crazy
Too good to be true... Then they should sell the GC controller cheaper. Not worth it if it's gonna work just for a single game. But maybe if you're gonna spend thousands of hours in Smash U, then it'll be worth it tough. Oh well, at least they include it. It's 2014 and knowing Nintendo is manufacturing Gamecube controllers again is something really, really cool. Let's be grateful for that.
Of course, different signals so they would have to patch support into individual games.
As for Wii support, it could be that:
A) They're using the OS version of the revised Wiis (the ones without Gamecube support) as a base
Or
B) an adapter connected to a couple USB ports DOES NOT emulate the actual built in ports of the original Wii and that the Wii firmware in the Wii U cannot detect the adapter.
LOL we all know they will work with upcoming NGC VC games. Its just a matter of time.
I do not care much about using the gamecube controller for smash as i believe the pro controller will be perfect for smash. Like many others have pointed out here, this would have been perfect for wii vc. The only answer now is for nintendo to hurry up and port all of the n64 vc games to wii u so that we can finally use the pro controller for them. Then RIP gamecube controller. Wired controllers in this day and age, really?
@Yorumi
I never said they didn't.
The problem is if Nintendo will want to patch the Wii mode with adapter support.
the GCN controller adapter was a cool idea, but the WiiU pro controller is already pretty comfy.
I would've only used it for smash bros' anyway, and they didn't say that it wouldn't be compatible with possible virtual console games... So I'm happy!
I don't know what to think. This changes everthing.
I had in mind to get the bundle with the controller, so I would have another GameCube controller..... TO ACTUALLY USE IT! But if it is only for Smash Bros, then I think it would be smarter to get a Wii U Pro Controller, that would work with more Wii U games, other than Smash.
I thought this was a little too good to be true. Works with everything, with fewer buttons? Ah well, I will likely snag another pro controller then.
However, all of you wanted GCN games on the VC... We haven't even got n64 games yet! One step at a time!
@SavoirFaire DS is apparently after GBA and that's only had a limited free release of Brain Training exclusive to Europe so far. But honestly I think N64 will come last if at all.
@Yorumi First and foremost, were talking about a console, not a computer.
With consoles, everything is a bit more "fixed" meaning, that its not that simple to emulate input ports.
The OS would need to be constantly running a subroutine to check for input over the USB port, emulate it and tell the game "this is input from a bluetooth Pro controller"
This DOES require a massive OS patch, no matter which way you look at it. WiiU games arent programmed to look for USB ports in search of controllers. They mainly check for bluetooth connections, which DOES require an emulator running alongside it constantly. And quite honestly, that could cause more problems that it is worth.
Also, like i said, just try to think of games that would work with it. Its missing 4 buttons already (1 shoulder button, one face button, 2 clickable sticks)
There is no advantage to be had here.
Yes, it could work with VC games, but the GCs natural button layout makes it more awkward than anything else, not to mention its inferior D-Pad compared to all WiiU compatible controllers.
Your second error lies withing "why USB in the first place"
If you connect the adapter via bluetooth would mean, that it gets recognized as one, single connection.
Mapping up to four different input signals to one connection is not without flaws. This also would cause more problems than necessary, not to mention that the adapter would still need a power connection somewhere.
To ensure that it has no input lag and a proper and steady connection, the USB port is the way to go here.
Wanting the controller to work with each and every game on the system is pointless. And like i said, regarding Wii mode, its basically original Wii hardware and an original Wii OS. Even in this case, youd need an emulator, translating either bluetooth or USB input signals and interpret them as the Wiis local GC ports. Considering the WIis hardware, its another feet on its own.
The GC controller adapter is merely a bonus for hardcore Smash veterans and nothing more. And frankly, it doesnt need to be more, as it wouldnt work anyways.
@Wolfgabe
Well, i have a hard time getting used to that on here. The amount of whining and demanding is utterly ridiculous. People have no clue how things work and still demand that it works against all odds.
At this point, whatever Nintendo does, its wrong. People will find even the tiniest flaw and make a big fuss about it.
Like the Ice Climbers thing in smash. It didnt work, end of story. The loss of one characters doesnt neglect all the good things that were added to the game. Sadly, most people around here thing otherwise...
Hopefully still wii games like metalslug and others can still use the gamecube pad on wii u.
Oh, Nintendo. They better announce GameCube VC for it, or it's one of the most useless accessories ever.
@Yorumi Uhm...harddrives and charging cables for instance ?
Why build in APIs for USB controllers, when there are none ?
The adapter was an afterthought, a quick idea to bosst Smash on the WiiU even more. It was never meant to expand the range of controllers for the system even more. And it wouldt even make sense, given the controllers button layout etc.
The USB port is not a native port for games to look for controller input, whichever way you want to turn it. They wont recognize it.
And thus, a patch would be needed to be able to play less than a handful of games, mainly VC games which are labeled a "failure" by yours truely, so why do you care ?
You wont be able to use it anyways.
Youre making a fuss about a problem, that isnt even one if you use common sense...
@iphys So, a roughly 20€ adapter to support the best controller to play Smash with is "the most useless accessory" ?
What about the far more expansive ballance board ? Its mainly used for Wii Fit. Is that "the most useless accessory" too ?
How many most useless thing can exist at the same time anyways ?
You folks do realize that the GC adapter just isn't natively supported by any game, right?
Developers can still manually implement support for their games inside the game code, which is exactly how GC support works in Super Smash Bros. Unite (Super Smash Bros. for WiiU sounds terrible). Nintendo just excluded out-of-the-box support so nobody can run up to them with a "You Promised Us" sign in hand when some developers just plain don't want GC support in their games.
@Yorumi That's very true in case of XBone and PS4, which are logically multimedia stations based on expansive modular operation systems. The WiiU, however, while being modular as well, is not based on expansive systems, which means you can't just keep adding things. The reason for that is to prevent update sizes stacking up semi-indefinitely, as well as keeping storage usage and RAM requirements in check.
@manu0 For Wii mode it gets even more complicated than a simple firmware updates. When a game is running, it has direct control over the system and it is really running the Firmware that is on the disc (each firmware update is saved seperately so backward compatibility on old games don't break). So if Smash Bros is made with firmware update 25, only firmware up to update 25 is loaded when the game starts. Mario Kart Wii could be running firmware update 31. So patching in a USB Gamecube Adapter becomes a very difficult if not impossible task without patching the games themselves (which I am not sure is possible on the Wii).
The Wii operates completely differently than a PC. On a PC the OS is always present and your software runs on top of it. With the Wii, once you launch your game the OS is unloaded and the software loads in it's place.
Very disappointed, I was absolutely planning on getting this bundle and probably still will if they don't release the Amiibo bundle in the U.S.
Doesn't bother me in the least. I have two classic controllers and that SNES-styled controller is >>> than the Gamecube controller. Seriously, the D-Pad on the Gamecube controller is in such an awkward place.
@Darknyht I know, that's why they should have built a wrapper INSIDE the GC controller adapter's firmware.
i had a friend who said they were buying because of that, -1 sale
I may trade in the adapter later on unless they add GC support to future games
There are always patches. I would be surprised if MK8 at least didn't receive a patch for it.
A videogame company that's been in the business as long as Nintendo has no excuse for something like this.
I get that corporations are in business to make money, but where Sony and Microsoft used DLC and online to gouge consumers since the last generation, Nintendo has quietly used peripherals as a Trojan Horse since the Wii. Most Nintendo titles that use multiplayer are A) local-centric and B) are incidentally among their most popular franchises (Smash Bros., Mario Kart, etc.), and Nintendo counted on that combination to get Wii buyers to purchase scads of peripherals that added enormous cost to that "low-entry, $200" console. By the time a consumer had picked up, for example, 3 extra Wiimotes, an extra Nunchuk, and 4 Classic Controllers, they had spent another $220...all without putting a penny into an actual game. And Nintendo's profits shot through the roof...temporarily. But most people eventually catch on. It certainly hasn't helped the Wii U so far, because people remember.
No peripheral in history has ever done well that was made for only a single game, or even two or three; the cost/benefit ratio just isn't there for buyers. Nintendo is counting on fans' passion for Smash Bros. to sell them lots of GameCube Controller Adapters in the same way they made peripherals what quietly made the original Wii so profitable. And I'm sure they WILL sell a bunch...but for a company long known for giving its customers value for their investment, Nintendo is treating them with a large measure of disrespect here...and in the long term it will come back to hurt that image just as the Wii's sales model did. People remember.
This is ridiculous, nothing else. What a shame.
Only for Smash Bros? I like the Gamecube controller as much as the next guy but not enough to spend $100 on a bundle that can only be used for one game.
@Einherjar You can buy Hori or PDP GameCube style controllers that hook up to a Wiimote that would work for Smash and also work for any game that can use a Classic controller: far better use of money in my opinion, and you're also not tethered to your Wii U like you are with this adapter. The Wii balance board is pretty useless too, but at least it can be used for more than just the Wii Fit games and you can use it in games like Wii Punch-Out!! and Tetris Party, and it's actually necessary to play the Wii Fit games, whereas this accessory is totally not necessary to play Smash.
Not what I was expecting... but then the GC controller is 2 generations old and there should be other options. Why design a game in 2014 that works best (for a lot of players) with a 12 year old controller? Likewise why go to the trouble of allowing the Wii U to use GC controllers and stop short support wise and have it only work with SSB... Surely some assurance of future support or plan to update for VC. I get that this is a good thing for SSB fans with a load of GC controllers but if your not in the group... this is currently a bit of a why bother moment at least for now. That said I'm loving SSB 3DS though controls aren't as good a the GC, but I'll give the Gamepad and Pro controller a go before ruling this as a huge mistake for SSB U fans.
@Yorumi Well, if Nintendo added support for this and that, update sizes would soon go way too big. Keep in mind that Nintendo has to include the content of EVERY previous update in the latest one to prevent critical error. If the WiiU were to support USB controllers, a lot of coding would be required to make most of them work without their own drivers. This would increase the general workflow of system improvements, because Nintendo would need to take care of every little issue with USB controllers specifically designed with WiiU support.
Last time we had that, 3 subsequent updates (as in, MS had to tweak USB support 3 times) on XBox360 were necessary to fully work through USB Fighting Sticks alone, even when they were designed for it.
There's no logical reason to make this adapter, except to please Sakurai and his fanboys base. Adimit or not, the gamecube was a failure. There's a reason why they made the wiimotre.
@iphys How is that even an argument ? Of course its optional, its also cheap and no one is forcing you to buy it.
And honestly, no third party controller will ever be a better investment than 1st party hardware.
But of course youre right, hooking it up to the Wiimote would be an option, but it would run as a classic controller, so its deadzones will be expected by the game. As the Analog stick of the GC controller is far shorter than that of the classic controller, that could lead to problems.
@AVahne
I don't believe the OS actually changed, they just removed the GameCube ports, and set it to read GameCube controllers as never being plugged in.
@minotaurgamer Wait...WHAT ? xD
Last time ive checked, gamecube games were the most requested thing on the WiiU VC at the moment, most GC titles are considered the best in their series and the controller is one of the best period.
If this adapter was made to please the fanboys, let me label you a hater troll then
@Yorumi Are you still on with the USB supprot ? Geeze, HDD, Charging cables, LAN adapter and poof, all 4 sockets are blocked. There is no USB controller, why support it then ?
Its like implementing Circle Pad Pro support in, say, Bit Trip Runner. Its there, but it has no use. Thats ridiculous.
One step forward, two steps back. I was gonna buy this, but not now.
This confirms that GameCube VC will NOT be in the plans for Wii U.
Oh for Fu.... I pre-ordered one earlier today. Better cancel that then. Less of my money for Nintendo then. Again.
@Yorumi "The reason this is getting to me is because with nintendo it's just death by a thousand cuts". Exactly. Couldn't have put it better. Add to their recent idiocy the delay of Toad in Europe until the New Year. There comes a point for everyone where the quality of their games stops balancing out their customer gouging and general incompetence. I'm pretty much there.
As soon as pre-orders openned I was going to put mine in but I am not bothering now, I have N64 games that I transfered to the Wii-U I prefar the GC controller to anything else but there is no way I can justify this expense now right before Christmas or expect a relative to buy me this because it won't be that cheap in Europe. Never is. Nintendo better pull some thing special from the bag during the build up to Christmas or no Nintendo games will be on my list.
@Einherjar by whom? the fanboys that habit the internet? get back to earth, those are a vocal minority. Wii U has games that share the same philosophy of the gamecube and it's failing just like the gamecube. The Wii and the Wiimote was HATED by those gamers and it was a huge success no matter how many times they write history. Reality says otherwise.
I had a GC and enjoyed but saying that it was wonderful and a HIt is being delusional.
There are 2 main reasons I haven't bought a WiiU yet... first I'm still waiting for an account system, second I don't want to transfer all my VC games. Playing N64 games with a GameCube controller is great, and I thought with this we would have that option...a shame. It's surprising Nintendo dropped the ball at things like this.
@soma For the record, there is an account system on the Wii U. But I agree with you on the other counts.
So basiclly it went from being one of the coolest accessories for the Wii U into just a niche one for Smash Bros. Wow, thanks Nintendo, your f***in' awesome! ¬¬
Even with this latest news, it still doesn't seem like it conflicts with what they told me 2 months ago.
http://i.imgur.com/qqzN7Ir.png
@minotaurgamer
There were lots of reasons the Gamecube only did OK and lots of reasons they made the Wiimote. Very few of them relate to the 'Cube controller
@brewsky
There is an account system, but for many people it's inadequate.
Not like this wasn't to be expected integrating this to all games would take extensive programming
Well that's a bit disappointing but I'm 14 now so I was just a bit too young to get a GameCube but I'm getting one this weekend!🙌 so I'm still getting the GameCube bundle because who doesn't want a smash bros GameCube remote especially for Mario kart double dash or super smash bros melee!
This is why I'm just hoping they release more colors of the WiiU Pro Controller, which is a great feeling controller, will work very well for Smash Bros, and also will work with many many other games making it a far better value to invest in rather than new Gamecube controllers and adapters...oh, and they're wireless!
@Yorumi I will try this one more time quoting wikipedia, "The Wii U's Wii Mode is a fully virtualized Wii system, with all of the limitations and privileges thereof." In other words, just like how your Wii became a GameCube when you put a GameCube disc in the disc slot, your Wii U becomes a Wii when you launch "Wii Mode."
I am sure they could probably manage a hack like they did to get the display, audio, sensor bar fed to gamepad; but I am not sure that it is worth the cost or effort.
@Einherjar Hori is known for making quality stuff, so I wouldn't just assume their controllers are going to be junk because they're third-party. I already pre-ordered those Mario and Luigi Hori controllers last week to go with my Mario and Luigi Wiimotes, and it looks like they even have a bigger D-pad than standard GameCube controllers, which is one thing I hate about the GameCube controller is the stiff little D-pad. I also pre-ordered the Smash bundle yesterday when we told we'd be able to use GameCube controllers for other games, so I guess I'll see what actually works better, but it's massively disappointing to learn the adapter may have no other use the day after I ordered it.
The fact that you can use any of the 4 USB ports for Wii mode (like an ethernet adapter) rather than just the back 2 would suggest that it has differences from an actual Wii.
why should i spend all that money to play one game? Nintendo can kiss it
If I had more GC controllers, it might still be worth it, but with just one? I'd rather stick to using gamepad and getting pro controllers. I was really looking forward to playing N64 VC with it, too...
@Yorumi Okay, I give you that, I do agree that Nintendo could've planned the WiiU a bit better, and that they still need to improve their plans on quite a few loose ends. And some stuff really feels unnecessarily backwards, considering how much Nintendo could benefit from a clearer infrastructure.
However, you're missing a vital point EVERYBODY else seems to miss as well.
Nintendo said GC adapters don't work with other games than Smash - because other games don't support it. GC controller support, however, can be patched or manually implemented by developers. It's obvious that whatever peripheral can be connected to a WiiU is ALSO detectable by any software running, it only needs some coding to support it. They only stated that the adapter doesn't support any other software because the software has to support the adapter. It merely means that GC controllers don't work with other games YET!
Most of my gaming time consists of Melee and the new Smash Bros games so it's not too bad. But there are people who would like to use this with other games too. Problem is that Gamecube controller has less buttons.
@Yorumi But the Wii U OS is running in the background. It's running on a separate dual-core ARM CPU in the system and the other half of the 1GB of RAM the system has, and has the custom WiFi hardware active. That's how we can get Wii games streamed to the Gamepad in the first place.
Technically speaking, they could launch Wii games from the Wii U menu if they wanted to, much like the 3DS can with DS/DSiWare. I think the reason why they didn't do it in the first place is because of clutter and a lack of time. As it is, Wii mode was added as a Day 1 patch for the system, so they were really stretching it for getting it ready for launch. With clutter, there are over 800 Wii digital titles available for the Wii. That's huge compared to DSiWare. While no one can have that many at one time on the menu itself, many have likely run out of channel space. If they were to have merged the channels onto the Wii U menu, it would have been a cluttered mess. This is why I believe folders are a first step towards that. As far as executing them from Wii U mode, it would be no different than what the 3DS does. Boot to the correct mode, and just launch the game, and when you want to exit, it'll boot back to the Wii U mode. I don't think it has to worry about the Wii System Menu because that in itself is just like any other program/app on the Wii. It doesn't run in the background. It closes when you launch something else, and launches when you close the program/app you were running. The "Home menu" that pops up in games and apps is actually built into each game (which is why if you've tried homebrew it won't act the same way). The hooks that you mentioned could redirect to where ever they are needed, including going directly back to Wii U mode after closing a Wii game.
@ Einherjar
thank you for being someone that isn't ignorant on programming. These self privilege fools nauseate me. At least Nintendo had the decency to let the public know before releasing the game to avoid confusion. PREORDER cancelled. CRY CRY
@Einherjar USB hubs work fine.
" ...it is not compatible with any other Wii U software. The adapter is also not compatible with Wii..." It will be if we've got anything to say about it!
I actually emailed Nintendo of America about the adaptor months ago regarding Wii compatibility, so expected that much, but no other Wii U compatibility is dumb. Hopefully it can be patched in and/or used for upcoming games, indie games included.
@brewsky
My bad, I meant a decent account system
Well, that's lame.
Wait, the controller is still compatible with old Gamecubes and Wii's that are backwards compatible, right? It's still a Gamecube controller, that I can use to plug into my friend's old Wii and pay Gamecube games on, right?
@fortuneandlame
What?
Whatever. I wasn't getting it anyway.
I would of been interested in the controller had it had functionality as a classic controller, but its pretty stupid to be able to only use it for one game. Missed opportunity by Nintendo. Making bad decisions though always seems to how they do things. I bet they next announce you can't even use it on a Gamecube!!!
@Aneira Gee... I dunno... maybe because the GC is the best controller for Smash Bros.?
@Imagamerboi Bye!
It's truly sickening how much hate the GC controller gets. Stick with your overrated little Pro Controllers. I will be buying the GC adapter, and I'll defeat all of you online because you guys are using your dumb Pro Controllers!
@Diddy_kong well said
What a crime shame.. basicly we're just buying an adapter for 1 game and 1 game only.. when we already have another verison that doesn't need anything at all (and we all own it!)
Smash bros. are not going to do much for the wii u as hoped for it seems. I'll just be happy with my 3ds verison which won't need an adapter to play. Smash bros. was always better played with the NGC controller due to better grip and control layouts.
@Yorumi I used hack as a generic shorthand term to describe them modifying the hardware hooks to allow the additional input/output to the gamepad. I am sorry for any unintended confusion.
As for the why Nintendo does this (or anything), I am sure there is a logic to it (somewhere). I think sometimes they are completely surprised by what users like about their systems and games. If enough feedback on the matter comes in and there is a simple solution, I am sure they will implement it as they eventually did in the past when the quality and performance standards were met.
I still think most people will be happier if you just purchase PDP Wii U Fight Controller which plugs into a Wiimote, is styled like a Gamecube controller, has the missing buttons, and works as a classic controller in both Wii and Wii U modes.
Dammit, now I don't want it again. Make up your minds!
Do you think now maybe they're looking at the comments they got from that announcement and are thinking: "hrm, customers really want this, maybe we should do it..."
...na me neither
Then why do all this marketing for a gamecube controller? I don't think this controller is just for smash. If it is that would be just for the loyalist and I don't think they would do that. I'm not buying this controller for now. I would be on a wait and see basis with this one, but I am not disappointed or surprised its typical .
Oh well.
Pre-order of the bundle, cancelled.
i think we have every right to "cry" about this news , dont be so self righteous
Dealbreaker.
Way to bend over the consumer, Nintendo.
What's worse is, if by chance that the adapter does support other games in the future, they'll probably be impossible to find.
Oh, uh...c-cool! I, uh, always wanted a GameCube controller replacement!
I-I mean, I always have that GC adapter for my Virtual Console that almost never works...
Was hoping for wii support. I want to play brawl but I can't play it on my wii u. I just can't wrap my head around remote controls >_>
What is today. Did the uppers of Nintendo and Sony take a vacation or stupid pills today. First Sony botches the Drive Club PS+ edition and now this from Nintendo?
So I wonder how much money Nintendo lost cause of people deciding now not to buy it or cancelled their preorders for it.
I will still be getting it though cause I own more GC controllers then I do Wii U controls so in the end I will be saving money by buying the adapter then more Wii U controllers.
YOUR DECISION IS BAD, AND YOUR SHOULD FEEL BAD,NINTENDO!!!
Annnnnnnnnnd that was the deal breaker. I'll get a pro controller instead.
I wasn't gonna get it right away anyways, but I guess now I won't get it at all unless my bro pays for it. :T
So i'm guessing Gamecube games will never come to the eshop? That sucks well time to dust off my pro controller.Damn it Nintendo come on.
@RainbowGazelle
I know, right? At least they were honest enough to tell people before hand. If they hadn't it'd be more like: "and thousands of fans were lost!"
@Darknyht
"I still think most people will be happier if you just purchase PDP Wii U Fight Controller which plugs into a Wiimote, is styled like a Gamecube controller, has the missing buttons, and works as a classic controller in both Wii and Wii U modes."
I've got two of these on pre-order. I'll still pick up a Gamecube Controller Adaptor (for the Gamecube Controllers I already own), but the PDP controllers look like they could be an excellent option for less than £20 each in the UK.
@SnappyJon I think the Hori ones will turn out to be better. I have had other stuff from PDP I didn't think was very good but not from Hori.
I'm happy. Look at the bright side, you can smash with a game cube controller and add to your retro controller collection at the he same time.
Wow. They're only gonna sell like 10 of these things.
Don't care, I'm going to use either 3DS controller or Wii + nunchuck
@Nintenjoe64 Never even thought about that. Good point.
Not much really to say
The Controller made some variations for the game only
It is absolutely ridiculous that they won't allow the adapter to work as a pro/classic controller. The concept of data piping has been around almost since the dawn of operating systems, and yet Nintendo can't even be bothered to do it? You can do almost anything with software, and something as easy as input mapping is just the tiniest of patches. I bet a single employee could sit down and write it in a day.
Keep in mind that the operating system doesn't just disappear when a game is started. It is more than capable of transforming USB input data into whatever it wants, including making it look like pro/classic controller input. Heck, you could hook up a microphone and sing the inputs into your game if they wanted to write the code for it. They wouldn't need to patch every single game ever in order to do it; they would just need to patch the OS.
I can only assume this apparent laziness is a marketing ploy in order to sell more Wii U peripherals and keep this one just for the die-hard fans.
There is one other possibility: maybe they don't want the gamecube controller to permanently look like a pro/classic controller, and future games may be able to recognize it as a special peripheral.
@Ryu_Niiyama yep I agree...what a rip-off!!
I will grab a few cube controllers though for backup! I knew this was too good to be true!
Oh well!
Knew it would be useless. This is Nintendo after all. They will always take the easy lazy route most of the time.
This is what pisses me off about Nintendo!!
The current disgrace that is the wii u vc release pace at one game a week & now this! I will grab a few cube controllers for my cube regardless. Fortunately I did grab 2 wii u white pro controllers at best buy when they had em on sale for $20 each so problem basically solved. But I will NOT buy the adapter unless it is one day useful with other wii u games other than smash otherwise I'm out!!
They're so friggin lazy Nintendo and once again blew a great opportunity to grace the wii u with a great selling point!! I wonder why they even bothered with this! I WAS so excited yesterday...
@SahashraLA To be in fair, in the same time frame you've described, they have also made some of the best games of all time.
that sucks and makes it a bit of a hard sale. That is like buying a game specific accessory. Oh well maybe they will patch it in later. Perhaps they thought they could get it done by launch and it turned out they couldn't. Here is hoping we will play any game with the cube controller.
@Yorumi Jesus if we have to wait forever for N64 then I'll take the 18 turbo games they have in japan at this point! NOA sucks!!
BOO
I think the Wii u Gamepad controls will be good enough. At least it will control better then the 3DS version because of a proper analogue stick. And I want to use off-tv play. It does support it, doesn't it?
I had zero interest in this. I like the pro controller's a lot. However if I have an itch for ngc or its controller's I still have my gamecube if i really wanted to hook that up, but ill just use my wii with my ngc controllers if i want. Sure its not with smash for wii u but, no big deal too me. Im not that hung up on the ngc controllers.
Oh well, I had interest of this for Mario Kart 8 (I have 2 GC controllers)... sigh
Still getting the adapter, but I'm very disappointed I won't be able to use it for VC and Wii titles. Nintendo, get on this NOW.
I'm thinking maybe the peripheral could still technically work with other software, but Nintendo needs to patch their Wii U system software first before the adapter becomes compatible. This is what I can theorise, at least, as Super Smash Bros. for Wii U may be programmed to be compatible by default.
all the negative response from this may convince them to
a. releases patchs to most wii u games allowing this adaptor to work with them
b. release a firmware update that lets the adapter work with all wii u titles and even wii mode, kinda odd it won't work with wii mode considering almost all wii vc titles supported GCN controller functionally along with certain wii games, well pre-2011 nintendo wii your not getting shelved anytime soon, good job nintendo, good job.
@Discostew
See....I totally agree with you that Wii or even GC games could be launched directly from WiiU dashboard and Nintendo is crazy to not be doing this as we should be able to buy best of GC and Wii games on eShop.
To others on here that are freaking.......OK the adapter is $20 in the USA which is not much more than the cost of lunch or a pizza. I still have a couple wqvebirds and wired so just for Smash it makes sense to drop $20 for more controller options. To that point, that is what WiiU usually offers many controller options and why is this bad. I would think for 4 player local like Mario3D or Kart we will see patched support.
They could easily add support to VWii mode and may do it or maybe we get GC VC......if not it will still be worth it to us that use Ninendont or Devolution as long as it gets supported by those apps.
I am only disappointed I can't use the adapter with my Wii, so I am cancelling my purchase for SSB4, and returning my Wii U.
Its like the circle pad pro all over again.
SIIIIIIIGH….
Those idiots...
Lame what a waste of a gamecube controller....
Was gonna buy one.. Now unsure
Was hoping to try this on a few games
Welp, the alternative is to buy a 3rd party Wii U controller with the GC design.
I don't understand why they wouldn't make it work with other games. It must have the same circuitry as a Wii U pro controller, just a different layout on the surface.
And if that is not the case, wouldn't the adapter be capable of solving such a problem? :/
Will the remote work with a gamecube?
many ppl would of bought this and im sure they can release a update to fix this so that many wii u tittles and wii tittles could be played using the gc controller but i guess not
I was never expecting this to work with Wii U games, but the GC Controller can't even be used for freaking Wii games?
Well, there goes my only reason to buy the Smash GC Controller bundle.
Missed opportunity
Well, there's always the Hori Classic Controller. Sure, it costs a bundle as a Japan-only import, and its face buttons are all the same size and shape, but it works as a GameCube controller with Classic Controller compatability in every other way and also includes rapid-fire functionality.
Wow... Nintendo just totally blew it. Please let them fix this in a quick patch pronto. This IS a big deal. If they don't get GC games on VC soon, they might lose me again. I was just starting to fall back in love with the Big N.
@Senario Oh come on, VI doesn't kill como potential at all, it's not a drastic ''get out'' feature, the efect is litlle, at least from what I've herd. Combos above 50%? We should be actualy happy we can combo TILL 50% LOL. It's a nice inprovement from Brawl. Also, rage doesn't afect knockback that much like people are saying.
There goes my plans of purchasing it. Another useless piece of plastic made by Nintendo. Bravo.
Why not just release GameCube Virtual library with this thing? Damn it, they're stupid or what? I'm seriously disappointed, my old GC controllers will remain in the shelf. I'll never pay that much for a SSB exclusive accessory.
This was a TERRIBLE move Nintendo. Have fun losing sales...
Well, that sucks...
This is a terrible move. Guess I have to buy some classic controllers to play wii vc games.
@Aneira yes you are wrong. Everyone who has wii virtual console games on their wii u wants this. Because without it we have to have 4 additional poopoodoodoocacapoopledoopleyclassic controllers to play our n64 games.
Watch the language please — TBD
@Leonffs
If it only works with Smash, your argument is pretty useless.
I bought a mayflash gamecube adapter after I read this news after waiting months for gamecube controller support and it works perfectly with Classic controller supported games and I don't notice any delay with button input in any of the games I've played with it and that includes Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros Brawl.
If you want it to have support in wind waker hd you could sign this: https://www.change.org/p/nintendo-uk-patch-in-gamecube-controls-into-windwaker-hd
