Re: Talking Point: Does Nintendo Finally 'Get' Digital?

JimLad

Digital Distribution is the future.
It opens up the market to indie development teams, allows them to set the price point, release patches, demos, DLC, have their games rated accurately.
It's the best way to get some fresh blood and new ideas.

Re: We'll Probably See Some New Nintendo Characters Soon

JimLad

You know the best way to come up with new characters?
Make more platforming games! That's how all the best ones started:
Mario, Metroid, Sonic, Mega Man, Castlevania, Kirby...

And they've got to be awesome, unlike Pikmin and Nintendogs.
Miyamoto is a great producer, but I doubt his ability to come up with any new awesome ideas at this point.

Re: Talking Point: Why Skyward Sword Sales Failed to Soar

JimLad

@Phoenixborn I agree with the first part. Hardware sales don't necessarily = software sales. This is a clear sign that Nintendo's core fanbase has been abandoning them in droves, that's why their new software doesn't sell as much.
Massive gaps in your release schedules will do that.

Re: Talking Point: A Big Year for Nintendo

JimLad

I dunno, this E3 will be the maker or breaker for me.
The WiiU needs some truely original software to wow me like the Wii did when it launched. Something that makes the controller worth while, not just gimmicky touch screen crap tacked on to the same old games.
I won't buy it for traditional games because my Xbox will do that much better with it's traditional controller.

Re: Nintendo Posts First Annual Loss in 30 Years

JimLad

Unsurprising considering how they've treated the Wii in it's final years.
It won't hurt them financially because of the enormous profits they already made, but their reputation as a console maker has taken a much bigger hit, which will be hard to recover from.

Re: Nintendo Reveals New Super Mario Bros. 2 for 3DS

JimLad

So long as it doesn't eat into NSMBWU development time, I welcome it.
Although going back to that article about "Is Nintendo too reliant on Mario" I'm getting even more convinced that it is.
I'm not sick of Mario, I'm sick of missing other franchises they could be working on.

Re: MDK2 Dev Will Never Develop for Nintendo Again

JimLad

This is the kind of article that seperates the realists from the pack.
I mean 6000 unit sales before a return!? That's outrageous considering the Wii's poor online install base and complete lack of marketing/support.
It's not a big sales number, but for WiiWare it's a struggle for any game.

I hope the Wii U does better, but right now I simply can't defend Nintendo on their online policy. It stinks.

Re: Miyamoto: "F-Zero Could Work on Wii U"

JimLad

@Ben_Rage_V2
I was the same. I appreciate the amount of content in GX, but I just didn't get the same enjoyment out of it, maybe it was the learning curve. Also X had way more style.

F-Zero is a good game to show off Wii U's power, I hope they make one, and make it online.
The problem with Miyamoto, and Nintendo in general is they are so committed to making new experiences, that they won't bother revisting old franchises if they can't think of something new to add to it.
I wish they'd realise that most fans are happy with more of the same, and start making DLC for their games.

Re: Miyamoto Keen On New Zelda Based on Link to the Past

JimLad

If he keeps this up, they're gonna have to make something.
Link to the Past is an excellent game. I can see how 3D would make multi-leveled rooms that much better. The parts where you're running around on walkways upstairs but can see monsters in the rooms below.

Re: Talking Point: Is Nintendo Over-Reliant on Super Mario?

JimLad

Yes because core fans want something new.
No because they still sell and get Nintendo out of the s**t when hardware sales are down.
They need to start launching their systems with Mario titles again. It pretty much secures their future, then they can roll out the other IPs later on.

Re: Feature: The Super Mario Renaissance

JimLad

Everyone seems to have differing opinions on which games were the best.
Testament to the broad appeal of the series. That's the main reason Mario games are the best, anyone can play them.
The new games are getting easier, but the fun is still there. That's all that matters to me at the end of the day.

Re: Talking Point: Is Wii U's Power Really That Important?

JimLad

The whole graphics race is heading to a dead end anyway.
Digital Distribution is where it's at. Smaller games at a fraction of the price, giving you twice as much fun. They're made with a passion and creativity that you just don't see in most retail games anymore.
But on that front, if Nintendo can make their games look amazing, then that is all that matters. With PS3 levels of power and HD I think it's entirely possible, given what they achieved on the Wii.
Besides, I'm still not convinced 'next gen' graphics will look that much better anyway.

Re: Ubisoft Wants to Be Top Dog on Wii U

JimLad

Didn't Ubisoft come over all humble and apologetic after they admitted their Wii Launch games were rushed and promised to make quality games from henceforth?
I hope they learnt their lesson.

Re: SEGA to Cancel Games, Focus on Existing IP

JimLad

They could save some money by making more straight retro sequels for download services.
Streets of Rage 4, Golden Axe 4, etc. Use the same engine and graphics, just create new levels. I'm sure it would sell.

Re: GAME Enters Administration, Closes 277 Stores

JimLad

It is a shame to see GAME, GameStation, Electronics Boutique, and GamePlay all taken out in one fell swoop.
So what is the future for video game retail in the UK? Are there any specialists left on the highstreet now?
Will GameStop move in? :/

Re: Talking Point: Why Wii U's Image Must Grab Attention

JimLad

I think a good compromise would be silver, it's pretty neutral, but a bit more interesting than white or black. Just so long as it's not black only, I've got enough black devices in my room. Plus it wouldn't stand out from the other consoles at all.
Personally I'd want it bright red.

Re: Battlefield 3 and NES Sounds Are Finally Together

JimLad

I love 8-bit music. They were so limited with sounds and effects that they had to make sure the composition was awesome, and most of the time it was. There were exceptions though of course.

I think most people in the UK say the word 'NES', whereas a lot of people in the States say 'N.E.S'.
I agree 'a N.E.S' sounds weird, 'an NES' also sounds weird.

Re: Feature: Nintendo's Motion Revolution

JimLad

Tilt controls and pointer controls work well. Swinging motion controls not so much I think. They give you a unique experience, but it's nothing like virtual reality so just becomes a bit of a chore imo.
The Wii remote is a neat idea and very relaxing to use when you're using the nunchuck and not swinging it about. However it lacked certain things that have become standard for a lot of games these days. If I could re design it, I would have a small diamond button layout on the remote, a second stick (or thumbpad) instead of the D-pad, and I would rename all the buttons so they make more sense and give them colours.
Also I'd make sure each remote comes WITH a nunchuck. No more of this forced sideways remote crap.

Re: Keiji Inafune Gives Rallying Call to Japanese Developers

JimLad

Breaking into the mainstream is hard no matter where you're from. Brand power and hype isn't something you can program into your game no matter how good it is.
Personally I preferred Japanese games in the 80s and 90s when they primarily made platformers. Now it mostly seems to be RPGs and Beat em ups, which are my two least favourite genres. I don't mind quirky stuff, or mad Japanese culture themes, but it's got to have gameplay that is fun and not repetitive.
