Nintendo has confirmed its plans for E3 2017, which will include the first public playable build of the 'sandbox-style' Super Mario Odyssey on Nintendo Switch, a Nintendo Spotlight: E3 2017 presentation to start the show, tournaments with ARMS and Splatoon 2 and three full days of Nintendo Treehouse streaming.
You can see a broad outline in the image below.
The Nintendo Spotlight presentation will focus on Switch games, mainly those due in 2017, but 3DS games will also feature in the Treehouse broadcasts.
Nintendo’s E3 activities kick off Tuesday, June 13, at 9 a.m. PT with its Nintendo Spotlight: E3 2017 video presentation. Available to view live at http://e3.nintendo.com, this presentation will offer more details about Super Mario Odyssey and other Nintendo Switch games, with a focus on games launching in 2017.
Immediately following Nintendo Spotlight: E3 2017, Nintendo is once again bringing back Nintendo Treehouse: Live at E3, a live-streamed showcase of upcoming games for Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. Gameplay for all the featured games will be streamed from the E3 show floor June 13 to June 15 via http://e3.nintendo.com, as well as on Nintendo’s channels on YouTube and Twitch. In addition to gameplay, the livestream will include behind-the-scenes info and commentary from game developers and members of the Nintendo Treehouse.
When Nintendo’s booth space opens at noon on June 13, show attendees will be among some of the first people in the world to get their hands on Super Mario Odyssey, as well as other games for Nintendo Switch. Super Mario Odyssey is Mario’s first sandbox-style game since Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine.
In addition to all of these activities, Nintendo will also host game tournaments that will be live-streamed from the E3 show floor. The 2017 Splatoon 2 World Inkling Invitational splats onto the scene on June 13 and features Splatoon 2 for Nintendo Switch. Composed of four pre-qualified squid squads from the U.S., Japan, Europe and Australia/New Zealand, the tournament will find teams participating in the first-ever international Splatoon 2 competition. The second tournament, the 2017 ARMS Open Invitational, takes place on June 14 and will feature Nintendo’s upcoming ARMS fighting game for Nintendo Switch.
The start-time for Nintendo Spotlight: E3 2017 for different timezones is 13th June at 9am Pacific / noon Eastern / 5pm UK / 6pm CEST / 2am (14th June) AEDT.
As always we'll be live blogging the action (with live chat) here on Nintendo Life, along with all the usual coverage. So, what do you think of Nintendo's E3 plans?

All aboard the hype train!
FINALLY! I've been waiting all week for something like this to crop up! My god the wait was murder!
To be honest, I've been so busy with games and real life, I totally forgot about E3! HYPE!!
YES! HYPE!
Let the games begin!
Xenoblade2 this year, that is all i need
Nintendo Drop the Bomb!!! Metr...etcetera
No 2018 games is concerning but this could still be very good. This is either going to be E3 2014 pt. 2 or E3 2015 pt. 2.
Three days of Tree House live streaming is what I was hoping for. Thanks Ninty.
HYYYYYYYPEEEEEE!!
Pretty much all expected, but I bet its the "unexpected stuff" we're all really excited for.
Me? Virtual Console is what I want to see.
Extremely happy that we're apparently only getting Switch games in the digital event. I love my 3DS, but at this point I'm really much more interested in the new platform.
Looks fun! Still hoping they make several surprise announcements. More games please! ^_^
Waaaaahooooo
This sounds very very promising, especially the presentation focusing mainly on Switch games for 2017. Should be some nice surprises.
My hopes and (fools) dreams are: New Metroid, New F Zero, New Animal Crossing, Wii U selects for switch range including Xenoblade Chronicles X, Brand new single player adventure focused IP, and hell why not, a Luigis Mansion 3 reveal.
Yay! These E3 plans are looking good. Also looking forward to both the splatoon 2 and ARMS invitational. Can't wait!
Can't wait. I'm sure it'll be just as bad as the last 3 years.
@Grumblevolcano No 2018 games is excellent. There is simply no way that there are no games coming to Switch in 2018 due to its popularity, and I really hate the current trend of announcing a game two, three or sometimes several years in advance of its release. Nintendo should just concentrate on making this first year for switch a truky stellar one. Then worry about next year after that.
Long as I get some Metroid I'll be happy.
I won't get my hopes up, but I'm looking forward to it. The main things I'm interested in is more Super Mario Odyssey info, and new game announcements. We've already seen plenty of Splatoon 2 and Arms, so I'm not expecting to be wowed by any new information about those two.
I've not picked up a Switch yet and I don't plan on getting one this year, so I'm hoping that some surprise announcements might make me change my mind.
@Marshi My thoughts exactly. Save the 2018 Switch games for E3 2018.
Focus on this years games doesn't sound good.
This spells D-R-O-U-G-H-T for next year.
They should have gone Super Marioyan and tell about EVERY game that is in the development cycle right now. EVERY single game no matter if it's coming 2018, 2019 or even 2020.
That would have convinced people that they can pump games out. Right now I ain't convinced about next year.
Or for third party that matter.
Although if I get that Rabbids + Mario Tactical RPG I will be happy.
I won't be watching then. Not everyone can afford a Switch and all the news lately has been about the Switch. I'm glad that the people who got the Switch are getting taken care of. But why couldn't they have had a separate event for 3DS games other than the Treehouse live event. There is only two games coming to the 3DS come fall.
@Grumblevolcano It says "with a focus on games launching in 2017" in the press release, so they could announce a few (early) 2018 games. Their last direct said it was focused on ARMS and Splatoon 2, but they talked about a lot more than just those 2 games.
A little worried they won't show anything new, but very excited to see more of Super Mario Odyssey
If they put half as much effort into the games and their presentation as they did the puppet show, we might actually see a decent show from Nintendo.
@Timppis ... Erm, what?
You can't be serious.
Nice. Can't wait.
All aboard the hype train
@Desy64 AGREED! Xenoblade 2 please don't be delayed
@Pokefanmum82 Just be glad there are still games coming out for it, my Wii U was buried rather quickly by Nintendo while at the time I thought it could easily last a few more years.
I can't believe it's already that time of year again.
I can't wait to see the design and props on their floorspace.
A focus on games launching in 2017 doesn't necessarily mean they won't mention a couple of games launching next year.
Personally i'm hoping for a few more announcements for games launching this year...splatoon 2 and Mario simply won't be enough for me.
Fingers crossed for a pikmin 4 and animal crossing announcements.
Metroid or F-zero, something different than the usual
Smash Bros port, please
@Marshi @Grumblevolcano Exactly marshi and why pull people's attention to 2018? And possibly cause them to "wait it out" until the game releases. We want them focused on what the Switch can deliver now.
@Grumblevolcano Doesn't say no games for 2018, just that it's focusing on this year's games. If Nintendo has something big that will be ready in 2018 it will at least be teased.
Really, it's around Holiday time that the promise of 2018 games should really be pushed, anyway.
Edit: ninja'd more than once. lol.
Give us:
Metroid
F-Zero
Words cannot describe how much I'm looking forward to this game.
I still can't believe we never got a proper 3d Mario Game on Wii U
We were lucky enough to get 2 on the Wii so seems very strange
@ThatNyteDaez
Yes I am.
Nintendo is known for their absolute secrecy concerning game development. In fact it is astonishing how little leaks out from them compared to many others.
However this also means that we live in constant uncertainty regarding what and when or if anything comes up.
WiiU showed us that Ninty isn't capable of churning enough titles out to satisfy the customer base. They did produce absolute fantastic games, but they were few.
Having an E3 That is focused on games coming up this year means that we will not see what OR if they have stuff in store for the coming years.
WiiU had a decent first year, followed by horrible years afterwards. I don't want that to happen again.
After the last few E3s from Nintendo, my expectation meter is set to zero. No doubt they'll still disappoint me.
Please new Metroid...
@Timppis this is why I'm hoping they quit making 3DS games and focus all of their development teams on making Switch games. If they do that then they can sustain a console without 3rd party devs
Games i would love to see announced for the switch.
Ff7 remake...... The cloud amiibo could work with it
Kingdom hearts 1 and 2
Pokemon stars
Rocket league
Resident evil game of some kind.... Hoping earlier rumours about the re engine working on switch are true. Resident evil 2 remake would be very welcome capcom.
More information about xenoverse 2 on the switch is needed desperately
@Marshi
On a business that takes you several years to produce games, taking a mental attitude of making one year great and being concerned about the next ones later is probably the stupidest idea that I can think of as a stockholder.
They need to have games outlined all the way up to 2020 at this point concerning their major franchises. Anything else is sheer lack of good management.
I will be very worried if they don't give us any glimpse on 2018 or even beyond that.
@RainbowGazelle Last 3 years? Only 2015 was dissapointing, Last year and 2014 were good years.
@leo13 Exactly my thoughts.
They should also lure all the 3DS 3rd party developers into making "2nd tier" games for switch. Non-HD 3DS type games to be enjoyed in mobile.
Sounds to me like it's not going to have anything new to show for Switch other than the games we already know about--that's just the sense I'm getting from reading that blurb--which will be somewhat disappointing if true. At the very least it had better show off more of the online service and drop the details on a proper Virtual Console. And, how about giving us an English language version of Mother 3 too, FINALLY. I mean, come on, Nintendo, let's make this great!
Let's see if they could bring us more game surprise other than updating us on what they already announced in March 2017.
@Timppis What? @Marshi clearly isn't talking about internal plans. This is about what to show the public at E3. That is all. What they show is no indication of internal plans except through idle speculation from outsiders.
I think that showing nothing from 2018 and beyond would be a big mistake, but that's just not likely to happen anyway and that isn't being stated in this press release, either. Focus does not mean excluding everything else.
Focusing on the immediately upcoming games and growing interest in them one by one is definitely a better plan, though. Nintendo is seeing big returns on focusing one or two major releases at a time and I don't see that changing.
This is especially true with these games that are meant to be played with friends. Mario Kart is best when many people you know have bought in. Same with Arms, same with Splatoon 2.
@Azooooz you forgot the obligatory hype train pic...i'd insert one here but i have no idea how. For now i will "chu chu" with you
Enough Switch content for release in 2017 to fill the presentation sounds awesome for me.
To focus on games planned for 2018 would just make next years E3 lacklustre.
I can't believe it's almost E3 again. Time flies. Holy crap.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
I would've preferred the usual comedy video to announce this, but oh well.
@Sidon_ZoraPrince Here:
@aaronsullivan
No. Marshi said:
"Nintendo should just concentrate on making this first year for switch a truky stellar one. Then worry about next year after that."
That doesn't imply in any way that he spoke about what to show etc. If that was the intention then I simply misunderstood it.
You are absolutely right that focus isn't a synonyme for exclusively. And I absolutely do hope that you are right about this and they do show something. We do know already that there is a FE-game coming up in 2018 (unless delayed) and I am willing to bet an eshop title with anyone that Xeno is going to be 2018 release at earliest in the West.
Focusing on immediate releases is good when you have base of customers. What they should now do is go full fledge "This is going to give you all this Nintendo Super S**t in the future, BUY IT" as a console marketing. They need to sell the Switch, constantly and they need to make everyone understand that this isn't another WiiU when it comes to sales (which I don't believe it will be, but still)
This phrasing just takes me out of the hype train and gives me the idea that there is zero reason to even list games I would like to see, since we know most of the 2017 titles anyway.
edit: Im speaking as 95% Nintendo fanboy and 5% as a stockholder so I really don't want them to mess this up. It's been good for the last few years and I would like to keep it that way
The only thing that worries me is the focus on 2017 bit. I'd like to see at least 1 or 2 mentions of big titles for next yr. even if it is only a graphic.
It´s AWESOME to see they are showing us only Switch games!
It´s also great they want to focus on this year´s games, I expect to see a couple new big announcements for this end of the year (unless Xenoblade 2 is coming out this year finally, then with just 1 big game more I´d be happy, specially if it´s a new Metroid).
But I also want to have a little look at what they are cooking for the first half of 2018. Probably Smash Bros, Fire Emblem, and Animal Crossing are coming out by then.
It´d be nice to see Monster Hunter 5 on Switch as well, no matter when it comes. It would be a fairly welcome addition!
@aaronsullivan Well, yeah. It doesn't specifically say no games of 2018 and beyond will be shown. Just 2017 games will be a priority of the prrsentation.
What im getting at though is I want companies to only announce games when they are pretty much almost ready. Of course I want Nintendo themselves to have a deep and long term plan for the switch, but im certain they do so i figured that goes without saying...
Im just sick of games like final fantasy or zelda being announced and then waiting upwards of three or more years before we actuallyget to play it! It was wonderful when, two years ago, fallout 4 was announced with a release date of just four months away. Whycant more companies do that? Sure announce that a game is "in development" but leave it at that until near finished code is ready tobe shown. Dont give us three years of trailers!
@Timppis
Taken out of context, that quote sounds like something it clearly was never intended to be. We are all talking about E3 plans. He starts by saying "There is simply no way that there are no games coming to Switch in 2018..." talks about hating the 2 to 3 year in advance announcement trends and then ends with "Nintendo should just concentrate on making this first year for switch a truky stellar one. Then worry about next year after that." If you misread it, fine. But this is pretty clear, in my opinion, and quoting it that way is misleading.
Is what I had bin expecting Nintendo would do at E3. Still since they usually look about 9 months ahead during directs it makes sense that 2017 is the focus. Still want to see info about FE switch game that should be out 2018
@RainbowGazelle @GravyThief 2014 was great and 2015 wasn't bad either. 2016 was the only disappointing one, and that was due to the lack of a presentation and their full internal focus on the NX/Switch.
Also really hoping they lay off the ARMS and Splatton stuff. Seen those plenty. They can focus on their details in the treehouse. E3 to me is about new announcements not updates on games that we know are already coming. Although I get u will see some of both. Something original between Splatoon and Mario would be good. There seems to be a good 3 months of a gap there. Monster hunter and metroid announcement would keep me happy. But most importantly I want to hear their plans for the OS and virtual console. I want to use this as my go to device and not also have to have my 3ds or iPad with me . Resident evil 4 virtual console please .
Cool! Should be a good showcase
@Timppis As for what they need to do, so far it's crank up the production because they are still not meeting demand. Honestly, if all the previously announced games (some due in 2018) start getting attention and more detail that library is going to look pretty sweet. One or two advance peaks at big games will help, too, but I wonder if saving some of that until just before the end of the year Holiday sales might be more effective.
Knock out the haters with Xenoblade 2 and show something promising about FEWarriors. That's all I ask for here; Monster Hunter would be a bonus.
@Marshi I like a couple carrots out there, but I agree for the most part. In fairness Zelda wasn't meant to take that long. lol. Or maybe that's being unfair to fans and too kind to Nintendo.
@Marios-love-child Why does nobody consider Super Mario 3D World a proper 3D game? It was like Super Mario 3D Land, which mixed the gameplay of the 3D games with 2D mechanics.
I've never heard people slam 3D Land for not being a "proper" 3D Mario game, in fact, people praise it for being a 3D Mario on an handheld, but World get slammed despite being a refinement and expansion of 3D Land's ideas?
I get that people wanted a SM64/Galaxy style Mario game on the Wii U, but Super Mario 3D World was a pretty good game, and fun to play since it merges the 3D levels and gameplay with some ideas from the 2D games.
Its a proper 3D game. If its not a 3D game, then what is it?
@Grumblevolcano "focus on" doesnˋt mean "only"! 😉
Their E3 website is now open, by the way. It wasn't too long ago.
I really hope virtual console and switch My Nintendo rewards are going to be announced during E3 some info would be better than keeping us completely in the dark
About what I was expecting...the part about 2017 releases concern me a bit. Maybe there is a holiday surprise or 2018 teasers, but we'll see.
Honestly, if we get announcements for 3rd party 2017 games we didn't know about, this could be good.
Finally some E3 info! Chooo!Choo!!
And FANTASTIC to hear that the Spotlight will be about Switch and not 3DS. This is our first indication since launch that they genuinely are sunsetting 3DS and replacing it with Switch. I love the 3DS, and I'm glad they continue to support it, but this should put us all at ease, those of us that feared they'd milk 3DS too hard at the cost of building Switch momentum. Did you see that @rjejr? I'm sure you're excited to see that. You can eat your green wafers in peace now
@Timppis "Focus on this years games doesn't sound good.
This spells D-R-O-U-G-H-T for next year."
Not really, if they felt the need to showcase 3 years of games at this E3 like they did in 2014, THAT would scream drought to me. That would mean they've shown all their cards from the future just to make the present not suck. If they can fill an E3 showing only what they've got coming soon, that means they've got to have quite a bit more in the pipeline to show off in the future. And it means they've got a lot coming soon. Remember the 2014 E3 that they showed 3 years of games....and then the next 2 years they showed the same games?
If they showed everything from the future they would quickly appear static and unable to surprise after the initial E3 hype dies down, and then we'd be seeing endless articles of how Switch had a strong first year, but never amounted to much.
First rule of showbiz: Keep them wanting more.
@Grumblevolcano 'with a focus on games launching in 2017'. Focus implies there will be 2018 games. But they will probably just have vignettes for the bigger games of 2018, I would guess. Mario Odyssey will probably be one of the top games in recent years so that is likely going to draw most of the hype.
oh hell yes im off that day!
They could focus on one or two games, and I would give a flying hoot. They need to clearly outline their OS, online, and virtual console plans. Without that, E3 will be a failure to me. And they need to convince the Nintendo nuts that some of these third party games such as Skyrim and NBA 2K18 are actually worth the purchase. I'm gonna guess, and say they do none of this.
@NewAdvent The statement says "focus on".That seems to imply that not all of the games will be 2017.
Last year was clearly a transitional year between Wii U and Switch and it showed. It was basically just Zelda!
Hopefully now though they have lots of new content to show to dazzle us with like Prime 4, Wave Race, etc etc!
@Timppis Well, seeing as we are still just about a month away and no one from Nintendo has come out and said the focus will be only on this year, I say we wait until E3 before creating the narrative for the presentation or the Switch's potential game releases
For those saying about there definitely being 2018 games. Look at the image, it specifically says games for 2017. If there does end up being some 2018 games like Fire Emblem and an unannounced game then of course that would be fantastic, even just brief teases like how there was Star Fox in E3 2014's digital event would be enough.
@Timppis You would rather them pull a Square Enix, announce a game 6 years before it's ready to be presented, go through name changes, major updates, or even cancellations? Do you have any clue how game development works?
There's a reason devs are not completely transparent on development.
@Grumblevolcano Nintendo can always have a Direct later in the year that focuses on next year's releases. There is absolutely no rule that says that e3 has to be about next year.
In a way I feel like it'll be hard for this presentation to let me down, since I'm already excited to see more of Odyssey and Xenoblade Chronicles 2. That's even before they announce new games we haven't heard about yet.
Pokemon Stars would be swell though.
What's the point in laying dormant Eternal Darkness? (Apart from the actual phrase sounding quite reasonable)
There must be someone skilled enough to do a sequel. Come on Nintendo, either do it or sell it.
@Grumblevolcano Look what you started.
I'm w/ you, that 2017 comment caught my eye, but I'm also w/ @Marshi as waiting 3 years for Zelda - E3 June 2014 to March 2017 is nearly 3 full years - was really annoying (I'm waiting another 3 years to play it in protest). I'm a big FF7 fanboi and I'm half expecting to die of old age before the last part releases. I'm not sure Shemue 3 is ever releasing, and if it does we'll probably wish it hadn't.
But I'd like to think like @aaronsullivan does that 2017 games will be the focus, as they should be, but there will be 2018 games also. As much as I don't like to wait 2 or 3 years for a game, I do think E3 should cover 12 months, that is the time between the E3s, so they need to show 2 big games for 2018, one for Feb/March - probably a port of SSB - and a new game in May, probably Pikmin 4 or Luigi's Mansion 3. But the emphasis should be on 2017 games, 2018 just needs trailers and "Spring 2018".
@NEStalgia Well they said the, what are they calling it now, can we just keep calling it the "Nitneod Digital Event" instead of "Spotlight", too generic, I called my 'zine that in 1998, would be Switch focused, just like they said it would be 2017 focused, so we could get 3 days worth of Treehouse 3DS games.
Ok, I dont' think we will, but nobody ever stops to really think about the games for hardware gens. PS4 won't last another 6 years as a "new" console, maybe as an old one as PS3 is now past 10, but not as current gen. And 1 reason for that is games. People play CoD and FIFA every year, but they want new game also. And new games means new hardware. 3DS has had SSB, MK, 2D Mario, sort of 3D 2D Mario, AC, MP w/ FF and plenty of Pokemon. And several MH games. Unless Nintendo wants the 3DS to get SSB5, MK9 and 2D Mario 2018, it needs new hardware to start all over again. And that new hardware is Swtich. So 3DS could get games for another 5 years, Just Dance, Disney World 3, Pixar movie tie-ins - Frozen 2 is coming, and all of these - but not AAA games from Ntinedo and Capcom. It's had it's day as a primary console.
http://allthemoms.com/2017/05/08/frozen-2-release-date-and-plot-hint-reveal-plus-5-more-disney-movie-dates/
So I know 3DS is fading from the spotlight but we don't know the cut off date. And we won't until we know when and where the Pokemon games are. 3DS could end this holiday w/ Eclipse, or it could get games all of 2018 until they come up w/ a portable version of the Switch. But it won't get any meaningful games in 2019, I'm pretty sure of that. Just licensed stuff. Which will sell well, Frozen 2 will sell a million copies, but won't sell many consoles.
Wow I forgot that E3 was only a month away. Guess that's a good thing since it haven't give me time to get hype, which these days is good for my health.
Already people complaining about the no 2018 announcements. This is Nintendo. They do about around 10 Directs a year. There have been 4 so far this year.
@Grumblevolcano
I was concerned about that myself. But....maybe because the games they are showing are going to be huge, that don't need to worry about 2018 yet. Maybe that's when they drop the Animal Crossing bomb. I know a lot of people talk Metroid, but I would love to see Sega's Shenmue, and Skies of Arcadia. Even if Skies is the GameCube Version.
I miss the classic E3 press conference style but I understand Nintendo will never go back to this. Looking forward though to spending some quality work hours ignoring my duties and just streaming Nintendo E3 coverage on my iPad.
Exciting times = )
@TheLZdragon
I said up towards 2020. That is not six years.
But if they do have something coming up in six years, Yes I would love for them to announce it. I think Zelda was announced something like that and came up pretty good.
And no, I don't have any idea on how game development goes. I have not learned anything as a stockholder, game developer, gamer and enthusiast.
@UmbreonsPapa
This is the only time for us to create narratives. After the presentation it's kinda late.
Doesn't sound like it leaves a lot of room for new announcements which worries me. That is, if that first presentation really is just 2017 games. And the treehouse lives are great and all, but what real adult here has 3 days void of any responsibility to just sit and watch them? I'd rather have a full-blown Direct and call it good.
I love good news! If Junchi walks into the presentation, then i'll explode!
@Timppis I guess my point is to just wait for E3. Then we can decide whether or not the Switch is in trouble or not. With any form of entertainment, I try to let the content producers put their vision out there and then react accordingly
While I'm disappointed Nintendo isn't doing a live show this year, I'm still looking forward to this. People should remember that while this says it'll focus on two or three specific games, the Nintendo Direct we got last month said the same thing, and we ended up getting a whole lot more. I think that means we are in for a few surprises.
@Pokefanmum82 One thing I know for sure....as soon as RPG Maker Fes comes out on 3DS in another month, my Switch won't get touched for a looooong time. Haha
E3 Hype Mode engaged.
@Timppis Then you should know this thing called "cancellations", which usually leads to outrage and disappointment more than anything else.
@garydbz25 That's no rumour, the statement came directly from Capcom.
I'm really hoping that they show us as much footage as the did with Breath of the Wild last year. They don't need to give us any solid information, just some high quality footage would be nice. I kept myself entertained for hours watching that footage from the Treehouse Stream.
Can't wait to see Mario ... I sure as hell hope that's not all they show with splatoon and ARMS I'll be so disappointed... I speak for so many when I say... METROID!!! and F-Zero hehe xenoblade 2 and a lot more games! ... Don't care about DS, better not show anymore than a few games for it, needs 90% focus on Switch!
I'm going to have an epic Nintendo themed birthday this year (13th June).
I'm hoping for:
Virtual Console - Please let us keep our 3DS/Wii U purchases. Also, more consoles like GameCube, Master System, etc. would be nice.
SOMETHING worthwhile on My Nintendo. Some discounts, or a free game similar to Zelda Picross on 3DS.
Themes - add a theme shop, perhaps even put some on My Nintendo.
First big system update for Switch. Please give us folders, let us arrange our games (like 3DS), and add a web browser.
Also, I'd love a suprise download 'available after the presentation' for something.
Other than that though I'll be happy with what we're likely to get: Info and footage of Mario and ARMS and probably not much else.
@Caryslan 3D World was sooooo fun. Such a great game.
@rjejr You have to keep in mind the original purpose of E3 was primarily for the US market to gather investors, distributors, and retailers for the producers to demonstrate their content lineup, mostly for the Christmas shopping season so they can align their sales goals, finances, and distribution/stocking expectations based around that catalogue. I think there's a big emphasis on focusing on the Aug-Dec timeline at E3 by many companies (when they actually have products to sell in that timeline and aren't just making big presentations for the sake of bolstering their brand image while keeping partners in a holding pattern like Nintendo 2014 and Sony 2015) because E3 really is largely about that 5 month period, and traditionally the industry pretty much halted Jan-March expecting consumers to recover from that time period. It's only new that there are really winter game releases at all in any meaningful number. (Which I'm glad to see...the "only 3 months to sell games" cycle was choking the industry.)
And keep in mind it's the consoles first Christmas, meaning BotW and 1-2-Switch and Bomberman are as much a highlight there as Odyssey and Xenoblade 2 because for the mass market, those games become new in November and didn't exist until then.
Spotlight isn't that creative a name, though "Nintendo Digital Event" is just plain cheesy. In either case if we get spared some blowdried ninny puffing out his chest and saying things like "best place to play" in between over-dramatic orchestral introductions, we can just call it "win" (much as I loved the orchestra....)
I'll never understand who actually buys the licensed games. After one or two even a toddler can figure out they're awful.
@Aneira , I adore Eternal. Darkness. It's my favorite Nintendo published game ever. I don't know why it's taken so long to see this franchise again.
Sounds about right. A focus on 2017 games. Doesn't exclude 2018 games at all. I'd think there'd be 2 or so games for 2018 (coughRetrocough).
Not like we won't see new games announced for 2017.
@Cyberbotv2 @Aneira I can only assume Nintendo doesn't have a good replacement for Silicon Knights, who developed the game. Love him or hate him, that game was very much Dennis Dyack's creation.
@Caryslan
Super Mario 3d World is a brilliant game in its own right
I just believe it'll never be considered a true 3D game simply because it isn't....... Its basically a 2D game in a 3D setting. The levels are very linear and restrictive, and little to no exploration involved
Although its in a 3d setting its simply a case of getting from point A to point B (flag pole) within set time limit like you would in a 2D side scroller
Super Mario Odyssey is great and all but I hope they have more than this. They're most likely keeping them as surprises, they better be good games like Metroid and not naff crap like Switch Music 2. 3rd party support announcements(or lack of) too will be crucial.
@Marios-love-child I agree I'd call it a 2.5d game. The best thing about 3D world was multiplayer. 3D land was better. It had the best bowser final battle.
Just what I thought- an expanded model of last year's presentation, which for BOTW was very successful indeed. Mario Odyssey will be the main focus for the floor, ala Zelda.
I intend to watch much more Treehouse this year.
@Azooooz Toot toot
@Marshi we can all dream lol
Excited and kinda worried at the same time.
My worry is about what kind of "Country" in the game.
We already knew about New York City and Mexico. I believe Japan and other country inspired will be in the game. I'm worried if there is a place that I will not excited (but the chance is maybe 0.0001 % for sudden disappointment)
Eh, sorry for my mumbling...
@UmbreonsPapa
Then there is absolutely no reasons to speculate or go into hype train at all.
I refuse to do that, as a fan, as a gamer and as human being.
@TheLZdragon
Yes I know about cancellations. Did you know that cancellations actually cause quite little in the way of internet rage as long as they are handled well.
Most things in life can be solved with good communication.
I love seeing Nintendo build up hype for its competitive games with tournaments. Glad to see them do it again this year!
I think everyone needs to cool their jets. We got a Nintendo Direct a few weeks ago that was supposed to be all Splatoon 2 and ARMS and it ended up showing a hefty amount of content for both the Switch and the 3DS (albeit it in a separate video). I wouldn't be surprised if they go a similar route here with 3DS announcements.
It's blatantly obvious that they're going to push the Switch. It's a commercial success at the moment and E3 is the perfect way to keep that hype/money train running. With the New 2DS XL coming out extremely soon afterwards, there's just no way they won't be giving it some attention. But the Switch is the key here. A ton of people already want the Switch, and another ton of them might make the leap with a good showing at E3.
And for the love of all that is holy, don't get too worked up on this supposed "focus" on Super Mario Odyssey. To Nintendo, a "focus" is like 10 to 20 minutes of a 60 minute presentation, if that. There's plenty of time to make lots and lots of announcements, and this is by far the most crucial E3 Nintendo has had since the Wii U's post-launch one.
TBH for some people all Nintendo would need to do to get hype would be to show a Metroid title screen at the end of the Treehouse stream. Instant success loll
@NEStalgia "1-2-Switch and Bomberman are as much a highlight"
I'm sorry, but those 2 games were never "highlights" for anybody. "Filler" is the word you were looking for.
And those licensed games are probably bought by the same people who see the movies. Well not all the people who see the movie, but enough of them to justify the $38.23 to make them. Though that 2nd Disney World game looks better than some of Ntinedo's "games" lately. I'd take it over AC:aF, MP:FF, Mario Ultra Smash or HHD. Seriously, as bad as it looks, I would.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhLIRaHdcgE
@Grumblevolcano Why concerning??? You genuinely think there will be no games next year or something hahhahah...ha...ha...erm...oh.
Wonder if they'll use the headlines thing they did in the recent Direct to blast through some of the smaller announcements.
@Grumblevolcano They didn't say "no 2018 games". They said "WITH A FOCUS on games launching in 2017".
@NewAdvent after last year anything is an aprovement
@Moon That could be the Mario and luigi superstar saga DX game
I know I am a minority here, but please Nintendo... A new Metroid, please!
If they are going to focus of 2017 games, I hope they would at least provide release windows of games through March 2018 to get us through the first year of the switch and near the end of the fiscal year.
@BlueKnight07
If you ever meet him, say hello and punch him in the crotch for doing the same thing to the Legacy of Kain series.
@Malpais
Surely you mean majority.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE does this mean you'll be buying a Switch for Mario and others? 😀 I was worried you were going to retire to a mountain and play nothing but WiiU.
So no new announcements planed? Damn, was hoping for some news on octopath traveler and a animal crossing...
I completely forgot that June is just around the corner! I'm excited for E3, but will keep my expectations in check. I'm hoping at least for a Switch VC announcement.
Also, some need to remember that "focusing on games releasing in 2017" doesn't necessarily exclude games that will release in 2018.
An Animal Crossing announcement is all I need. It would still be a great E3 for me even if that's all they had to show.
It's Interesting that they are having a sandbox style demo for Mario Odyssey. Might they be trying to show Playtonic who is king in platfome games?
@rjejr One Man's "filler" is another man's "GOTY"....especially at Christmas when the masses are buying Those candy crush people need SOMETHING to look forward to (and ok, Bomberman is actually just retro fodder...and Japan fodder... )
Internet flaming aside Federation Force actually IS a good game, especially for a 3DS game....BUT if you don't have at least 3 people playing in person it kind of sucks. It does not scale for less than 3 players at all, and that is its critical oversight. But I was impressed with the cool stage design and such, and mission variety. If you have 3-4 real world people to play it actually is a great game. Translated: If you live in Tokyo, it's a great game.
so no 3DS games during the main presentation? that's good news.
@UK-Nintendo
Absolutely...... As I said it's a brilliant game in its own right. I just believe it's in a class of its own and despite the name it's not technically a 3d game.
Mario games are the reason I love nintendo so much and the reason I buy their consoles.
I'm not a fan of Zelda games, have no particular interest in metroid, star fox, pokemon, kirby, animal crossing etc, for me it's just all about Mario games in particular the 3d ones and I can't quite put my finger on it but super Mario 3d World just felt like something was missing. I played it and enjoyed it but I've no desire to play through it again and that's the first time I've ever felt that way.
Mario 64, sunshine and the galaxy games I will often revisit and play time and time again
I want Animal Crossing and a Pokemon title to make their way into 2017.
Huh, only Switch games to be shown. This outta be one to watch.
Though I wish that the Splatoon 2/ARMS tournament was shown before the Spotlight. Like the Nintendo World Championships or Smash Bros Invitational. Just to rev things up instead of starting off with the main event.
I'm more concerned about the emphasis on Mario Odyssey. That implies a 2016 situation where it's going to be Odyssey and little else. Definitely reeks of not much to show.
@Malpais The rumour is there are 2 Metroid games in the works!
@Marios-love-child I totally know what you mean. Just completed Mario 64 last week. Connected the n64 back on the tv. I know there's virtual console and I have that but I love playing it with the 64 controller
@UK-Nintendo
You can't beat it.
Mario 64 no matter how many times I play it always reminds me of Christmas day 1997 when I got my n64, I would have been 15 at the time
You simply can't beat a bit of nostalgia
I'm hoping in 20 years time I'll look back and think of Mario oddesy as fondly
@GrailUK Not at all, it's just that a brief look into 2018 (even say Fire Emblem and 1-2 unannounced early 2018 games) would help people on the fence about Switch to feel more confident that the Switch will have a good overall library rather than a good 2017 lineup followed by droughts which the Wii U was well known for.
@Marios-love-child haha true. I feel the same with super Mario world for the snes
upload images freecertificity.com
AH HA, AH HA, YEAH
@UK-Nintendo
Hahaha super Mario world is where it all began
My all time favourite game
@Grumblevolcano There main priority is to build momentum up for the holiday season. Mario Odyssey will sell bigger than Zelda. Splatoon2 is going to be a hit and Arms will need explaining to the media so E3 is perfect for that. Why spoil the hype for that direct that comes before Christmas telling us whats coming 2018 E3 isn't what it was for Nintendo. They demonstrate games as opposed to dangle CGI carrots on a stick for the next 3 years. More power to em for being genuine.
@RainbowGazelle
You mean last two years. 2014 was excellent.
Boy, for an announcement about their 2017 plans, there sure are a lot of "what about 2018?" posts. I get what those are saying, you want to feel like there's a good stream of games rolling your way. Maybe there is, but if you're hoping Nintendo is going to get all chatty about it then you may want to brush up on Nintendo's history of tight-lipped, close to the chest announcements.
The best way to help ensure a good roster for 2018 is to not treat 2017 like the Wii U. If they see a runaway hit with both the system and software, they'll start feeding the fire. You'll get more of those third party choices as well. The vague but accurate answer is there are TONS of good games in some stage of development, but you won't even hear about some of them unless the guys who fund their development believe they have a big enough user base.
What I want to know is why they're saying "first sandbox-style game since 64 and Sunshine. The Galaxy games are pretty much in line with that, too.
@GrailUK Where can I see that?
@Timppis
"Focus on this years games doesn't sound good.
This spells D-R-O-U-G-H-T for next year."
Adding 2+2 to get 437 there. I'm amazed to see some of the panic on here (not just you) when they very clearly don't say they won't show anything for 2018, just that such games aren't the focus.
"They should have gone Super Marioyan and tell about EVERY game that is in the development cycle right now. EVERY single game no matter if it's coming 2018, 2019 or even 2020."
Would be lovely but let's be honest, never going to happen. They don't want to be showing the same games for 3 E3's running, that whiffs of drought as much as anything else
Mario, Metroid , f-zero and pilotwings please nintendo
@Malpais Boogie 2988 (or whatever found it) on YouTube.
I am so looking forward to seeing what announcements they have for E3
There are still rumors that need to be confirmed, Rabbids x Mario, Pokemon Stars, SNES Mini, what the heck Retro Studios are working on etc. and games that need more footage like Fire Emblem Warriors with only had a CG trailer, but I think they could have some room for 1 or 2 2018 reveals even if they're just CG trailers. If they do have a Metroid or/and F Zero in development, it can create enough excitement for those still waiting on those kinds of announcements to ensure the Switch is a real hot seller over Xmas in excitement for those 2018 blockbusters.
They really can't afford to screw this E3 up. They have done so well so far with the Switch and they need to ensure those early and future adapters have lots to play in the near future. As great of a game BOTW is, not everyone's into Zelda or those types of games. No good just saying "too bad" if that and Mario is all you have to offer them.
Half the fun of Nintendo as King of Leftfield is trying to fathom what they're doing.
They seem to be hitting their stride with the Switch. Looking forward to finding out what's in store.
Well e3 is a bit of a wildcard for Nintendo.... sometimes AWFUL, sometimes AMAZING. I'm hoping for the latter......and pikmin 4. Please pikmin 4
@Timppis You're both right. I hope that's their path. I don't mind if they finish the 3DS games that are almost done, but if it's early in development transition over or make it dual release (like Fire Emblem Warriors) and definitely don't start any new 3DS games.
I fully expected people to panic over the phrase "focus on 2017 games", and I was not disappointed.
All my hopes are on Super Mario Odyssey being good and some Rayman Legends Definitive Edition news. I don't really mind the rest of the biz.. I have high hopes for Mario turning out alright after playing Zelda BoTW!
And 3D World wasn't really a bad game, but it sure felt as the most generic of all 3D Mario's. It stood out best for it's local multiplayer, which they translated to 3D very well!
EDIT: Oh I forgot, Ubisoft is rumored to show off Beyond Good & Evil 2, likely coming to Switch and maybe (yet unlikely) even exclusive. I'm interested in that game too!
Good, they're focusing seemingly almost exclusively on the Switch. Good decision. The 3DS is a good system, but at this point, I kind of feel like we've "been there, done that". Particularly since there's really not many really cool looking 3DS titles coming out- Fire Emblem was basically it for the year. I really want to see more from the Switch though.
Also, Mario Odyssey hype! Hope they show Virtual Console, I mean, they do have to at some point before their online service comes out. I just want to see VC...
@westman98 It's been great reading, you'd almost imagine Nintendo's going to pull the plug on the Switch (or Switch it off?) on Dec 31st 2017 by looking at some of these comments.
To be honest, would people rather see a CGI trailer with plenty of cutscene but zero gameplay for something that might come out in 2020? Or something that's real and will be available to buy soon?
H Y P E and "my body is ready" etc.
Means - I can`t wait !!!
@Jimsbo
No, they are not (IMHO)
@UK-Nintendo
Gimme all of them!
Definitely the Switch game I'm most excited for.
I need more than just Mario Odissey, Splatoon and Arms to get Hyped. GIVE ME MORE GAMES I DONT KNOW
Time for a new Pokemon stadium like game! or Xd gale of darkness for that matter, JUST DO IT!
Yay, I can't wait for it. I'm expecting some neat little titles to be announced for Switch or 3DS so I'll have plenty of games to play until the end of the year. Hoping for something amazing. Super Mario Odyssey is looking like a great holiday game! I sure hope Luigi is playable...
We've made it pretty far into the year without a new Pokemon being announced...
@Neferupitou I would let you borrow it
Hyped for both Nintendo and Sony's presentations. Between having just got a Switch yesterday a birthday gift and enjoying my PS4 a lot, there's a lot to be excited for.
E3 2016 for all three companies was a runaway success despite my very low expectations. Now this year I have high expectations. For better or for worse...?
I hope they aren't completley focused on 2017 titles only, I kind of wanted to see what Fire Emblem Switch would be like.
@Bolt_Strike I think it's more about capitalising on Super Mario Odyssey's hype. Its reveal trailer got more attention than Breath of the Wild and I've only seen 15+ million selling multi-plats(CoD, GTAV) get as many views on their reveals.
Regardless of what they've got to show, focusing on Super Mario Odyssey would draw the most people in. They're not going to underplay the game that could move them millions of Switches at Christmas because all the other games will benefit from it.
When you think about it, the last few years Nintendo usually has one game they really want to focus on, they make sure to talk about releases for the rest of the year, and they will tease something for the next year (or later). I'm sure something will be said about 2018.
Looking forward to it. I expect a great showing especially since the Switch is now on the market and is off to a great start. Really hyped for Super Mario Odyssey.
Well, my calendar is cleared for those three days. Any fool who bothers is getting an amiibo thrown at their face.
I'm surprised, though, at the negativism here. People are acting like Nintendo's doomed due to not having the complete release schedule of all games till 2020. You really think "focus" means they'll only show Odyssey? Last year, Zelda was the main point and they still showed other games in the treehouse. Plus, focus on this year's games doesn't mean they won't show 2018 games - probably there won't be gameplay for them though, just trailers.
On the plus side, Soraya Saga, Takahashi's wife, said in Twitter she was excited about June. Taking in account she always tweets about events in which Monolith will be present, we'll have some nice, juicy new info about Xenoblade. Let's hope it launches this year!
looks like Mario changed his shampoo
Sounds good. I'm not expecting new game announcements though, at least not for this year anyway. I hope ARMS is amazing.
I was so focused on finals week that I completely forgot that June comes after May. It's only a few days away! I came here expecting to wait another month, lol.
I love that Nintendo always does their E3 presentation while I'm at work.
I really hope they give Xenoblade 2 some real attention! I want that series to get the attention that it has deserved (keeping in mind that there are currently only 2 games in the series)
@premko1
They're very different feeling, but I recall a lot of the same formula (hub worlds, going through the same areas with different objectives each time, objectives that required the power ups, etc) The thing that set them apart was mainly the gravity hijinks and locations. Sunshine actually had more changes to the gameplay with all the nozzles and reliance on FLUDD. Really, none of them are what I'd call "sandbox", since you have a clear objective every time you go into any area. The main thing that makes them sandbox by Mario standards is the lack of a countdown timer.
I just wish that 3D World would get more appreciation. It's definitely not sandbox but it is the purest form of classic Mario gameplay in a 3D plane, as well as some of the best looking 3D graphics. Even if everything does tend to look a bit like plastic toys, which adds to its' charm for me.
Im hoping to see a bunch of new games announced. Especially Dargon Quest X and XI. If X is not announced at this E3 I seriously doubt North america will ever see its release. Presentationwise I really like what Nintendo does to with the Treehouse. Its simple but usually full of the info were looking for
@Caryslan SM3DW is not a 3D action-adventure title in the vein of SM64. It has 3D movement, but it's just a 3D version of the 2D platformers. It's not bad for what it is, but it can't be considered to be part of the true 3D Mario adventure series.
No funny anouncement video this? Anyway, If its mainly games that release this year, I don't expect much. Yes Mario, but will they have some other hardhitters under their sleeves? Maybe the new Retro title? We'll see!
To be fair, I think all the Super Mario games are great sandboxes to just play around in, including the 2D games in the series.
@Marshi Eh, you really are setting yourself up for disappointment. What you'll get [first-party-Switch-wise] under that "2017 games" banner is Splatoon 2, ARMS, Super Mario Galaxy, possibly Xenoblade Chronicles 2 in some form, and maybe a couple of smaller new eShop title announcements (hopefully we'll finally see the English version of Mother 3). We might and hopefully should also get to see more about the full online service and finally a reveal of a proper Virtual Console in some form.
@Caryslan
Oh and for what its worth I cant stand Mario 3D land.... 3D World is a much much better game
But neither are truly 3D games
I need at least a mention of something other than what's already known. The lineup for 2017 has nothing of interest for me outside of Mario Odyssey.
Definitely not enough to warrant buying a switch.
@NEStalgia You make MP:FF sound like Tri-Force Heroes. My kids tried to play that a few times 2 player but you really need 3 people. Or maybe we had 3 but needed 4. I think it was free, so whatever.
I do like some of their free offerings more than their paid games. Nintneod Badge Arcade is cute, Pokemon Rumble World kept me busy for hours. I'm fixated on price, just can't get past it. Well that and why they would call a soccer game "MP", why not just "FF"? Rocket League gets by just fine without calling itself FIFA: Rocket League.
I really dont' think there is a game in AC:aF though. This is the best review of it, starting at 16:10
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8VTZEsPOD0&t=1143s
@rjejr MP:FF is extremely similar to Tri-Force Heroes in its design philosophy, yes. I often group the two together. Tri-Force Heroes NEEDS to to really solve the puzzles, it can't actually be played without 3 (the game won't let you) other than single player mode which is brutally difficult because it's tuned for 3 players. You can add missing players by playing online though (2 local, one online player.) But I find that game frustrating as, online, most people seem to be doing speed runs and farming rather than figuring out puzzles so if you're doing online your first time through, people tend to just troll you and RQ if you're not speed running with them.
MP:FF isn't that bad, and you can play with any number of drop-in players, BUT the game does not scale difficulty for less than 4 players, so if you have 1-2 players, and one of them is not a really awesome player, you're going to get rolled hard in a game designed for 4 competent gunners. I think with 4 the game might be "easy" and with 3, the game might be challenging. With 1 or 2, it can be done but you'd better be expert FPS players. All they needed to do was scale enemy hit points or damage dealt with few players. But that was a design decision not to for whatever reason.
Badge Arcade with the little Yakuza Bunny? He'll rob you blind! That price fixation sounds like your average Wii/Mobile gamer. Why exactly did you buy an X1 again?
AF...yeah...I haven't played it. I try not to think about it. It's cute. It's probably a fun board game. But cant I play a board game on....a board? Like it was meant to be played?
@NEStalgia "Why exactly did you buy an X1 again?"
B/c of my price fixation, Rare Replay, 30 games for $30. I know they wont' all be great but I figured enough would be good. So far I've enjoyed Conker and Kameo.
I did tell you the story, right? Original Xbox One but w/ 1 TB HDD, Ori and the Blind Forest ($20 game), Gears of War Remastered (a retail game) and Rare Replay 30 for $30, all for $175 NEW at Target.
Oh, but before I bought it I checked Gamestop and they were offering $165 trade-in for it. So that's a $10 rental for a system and games. Now I have decided to keep it for longer than I originally planned - also w/ my 30 day free trial of Gold Live I've played Gainnia sisters Twisted Dreams and SW:FU2 and about 15 minutes of Ryse, which was all I could take - so maybe I only get $100 for it at Gamestop this holiday. That's still a good rental, $75 for 6 months and maybe a dozen games.
So yeah, price fixation.
Know what would be really funny, trading in my XB1 for a New 2DS XL. Not exactly sure why thats' funny, but I'm cracking up inside thinking about it.
@rjejr "SW:FU2"
I'm trying to figure out if that's an abbreviation, an otaku anime game from the makers of DoA, or just something made by EA.
Nothing funny about trading in a system with no games for a system with a towering library of more games than you could play in years.
@NEStalgia "Nothing funny about trading in a system with no games for a system with a towering library of more games than you could play in years"
Funny you should say that, my nephew has decided his next big purchase will be a 2DS XL over a Switch, his reasoning being the huge back catalogue, to replace his old 2DS and the SNES games available on it....
I'm just hoping the west gets xenoblade 2 and DQ XI this year. If either happens I'm pretty much set for the rest of the year. I'm still working on Zelda for crying out loud.
@WiltonRoots Yeah, I think they're even kind of aiming it from that angle now with the whole "great value" aspect. Granted, Switch will have a lot more games coming for it, bigger games, around Holiday so it won't look as lopsided as a brand new launched console, but....there's a lot of amazing 3DS games, and an OG 2DS just doesn't do them justice IMO.
@Ryu_Niiyama Well as of the investors meeting they explicitly doubled down on 2017 for JP AND the West for XC2. I'm not holding my breath entirely....but that's very encouraging so I'm no longer looking at it as unlikely, but at least very possible. DQXI OTOH....I'm not holding my breath for that or SMTV in 2017! Heck they don't even have DQXI dated for Switch in Japan!
@NEStalgia
@rjejr Haha, I knew what it stood for but you've got to admit "FU2" is an unfortunate abbreviation, though aptly fitting for an EA game
Mixed feelings about that game. The first was overrated, but at least it was Raven.....without Raven....I can't have high expectations for it.
It's really funny seeing the panic in here when the actual text of Nintendo's announcement leaves plenty of room for new announcements of games for 2017 and beyond.
@Bread-Not-Toast prepare for disappointment
Nintendo's E3's of the past few years have torally sucked!
I hope they bring the big games namely Metroid. Its been on the cards for the last three years and left nothng but disappointment, i dont think i can handle another year.
