Re: Nintendo 64x64: Bomberman 64

JimLad

This game was the only time they tried to do something different with their multiplayer mode, I definitely wouldn't fault it for that.
I've played a lot of Bomberman games over the years, this is still one of my favourites.

Re: Feature: The Nintendo 64 Controller and the Rise of 3D Gaming

JimLad

I won't have a bad word said about this controller. Sure it looks weird and clunky now, but without it there would arguably be no analogue thumb sticks, no rumble features, no triggers.

On a side note: Nintendo also standardised the D-pad, shoulder buttons and diamond face button layouts. They pretty much made modern controllers what they are.

Re: Wii U Minecraft Looking Doubtful As Dev Says They Have "Fulfilled The Need For Now"

JimLad

Putting Minecraft on the Wii U at this point would benefit Nintendo far more than Mojang. If the console eventually gets off the ground with Smash Bros, then maybe they'd reconsider.
The 3DS would make more sense for them, especially if it were bundled, kids would lap it up. But it would need an optimised version of the mobile version. Also the the current 3DS doesn't have that second analogue stick. The new 3DS would be a good match, but maybe it's still too much of a gamble for 4J. Third parties always have a hard time selling on Nintendo systems. Vita on the other hand has a pretty good attach rate for indie games.

If I were Nintendo I would do everything in my power (wallet) to make this happen. But because they live in such a bubble, they are completely oblivious to how massive Minecraft has become. It's now the third highest selling video game of all time, overtaking Super Mario Bros, and it's still climbing.

Re: New Nintendo 3DS Models Announced

So happy to see coloured face buttons. I know it seems like a small thing, but for inexpereienced gamers it makes learning the interface that much easier.

The next step is to get Minecraft on the system. Think how many kids would jump on that.

Re: Shigeru Miyamoto Confidently Outlines Nintendo's Move From Casual To Core

JimLad

I just wanted to add he is absolutely right about consumer attitudes.
Not just Nintendo, but MS and Sony are all fighting the same problem: audiences with multiple distractions at their fingertips. Entertainment is so readily available now and so cheap, consoles will become an obsolete item for many in the future I feel.

Nintendo will always have their awesome IPs. I just hope they don't get too distracted by hardware gimmicks and try to keep it simple in the future.
People will buy their games if the hardware is affordable.

Re: Shigeru Miyamoto Confidently Outlines Nintendo's Move From Casual To Core

JimLad

Casuals aren't looking strictly for simplicity in their games, they look for value for money first and foremost. They can get games now for $1 or free, it's a difficult thing to fight against.

Wii and DS were popular not just because of their casual appeal, but because they were radical new ideas with intuitive software to back them up. Word of mouth was their main driving force.
Also they were much more affordable than any of the current gen systems.

Wii U was an attempt to re-create that success which backfired.
I could list a number of reasons, but the main ones are: There was no killer app like WiiSports, and it was too expensive.

Re: Poll: Which Is The Best Legend Of Zelda Game?

JimLad

Ocarina of Time and A Link to the Past.
Not only are they both as close as you can get to the perfect video game, but they were so far ahead of anything out at the time it's not even funny.

From a purely gameplay perspective though, Twilight Princess remains the most epic and fun.

Re: Kotaku Says YES to the Wii U - Rejoicing Begins

JimLad

Like I always say, Nintendo games sell Nintendo systems.
They don't need gimmicks, or horse power, or even third parties.

Next time I hope they just make a standard video games console, and release the peripherals seperate, instead of trying to force them on us.

Re: Miyamoto Thinks That Nintendo Are in a Genre of Their Own

JimLad

This has been true throughout their entire video gaming history. Pretty much all of their rivals have used coolness to sell their products.
The Mega Drive, the Playstation, the Xbox... There's nothing wrong with coolness, but it gets boring after a while.

Nintendo have always been able to make quality games without trying to be 'grown up'. Because of that they have a huge segment of the gaming industry all to themselves. (kids and families) Right now they just need some cheaper hardware to capitalise on it.

Re: Talking Point: For Better Or For Worse, The Wii U GamePad Is Here To Stay

JimLad

The gamepad has always had potential, but potential is just a word unless it turns into something.
The cold hard fact is that Nintendo themselves are not even bothering to make use of it anymore in their games.
The only arguments I ever see for it's case are:
-Off TV Play
-Off TV Browsing (get a tablet)
-Navigating menus slightly faster (really?)
-Maps & Inventory
-"I'm loving mine!" (good for you)
-ZombiU/Nintendoland

I'm actually glad they tried the idea, it's what I love about them.
But enough is enough, it clearly HASN'T worked and they need to swallow their pride like Microsoft before it's too late.
