With Super Smash Bros. for Wii U just a little over a month away, we know that Nintendo is gearing up to reveal more details; Masahiro Sakurai recently stated that an upcoming announcement would reveal the game's "true potential". That sort of teasing comment certainly gets fans speculating, but now Amazon has added more fuel to the fire.
The amazon.com listing — at the time of writing — states that as players we'll be "creating stages on the GamePad", while also saying there'll be a "board game mode". This is given some credence as it then references "competing in challenges crafted by Master Hand and Crazy Hand", which certainly points to Masahiro Sakurai's partial reveal earlier this week. Below is a screengrab of the product description, as we expect Amazon to remove this information once Nintendo inevitably makes the request.
Amazon has leaked game details before, and they should always be received with a bit of caution. Such is the specific and feasible nature of this — Super Smash Bros. Brawl included a Stage Builder — that we'd like to think it's a case of an over-eager Amazon employee sharing information that's supposed to be embargoed, pending a Nintendo announcement. A stage creator using the GamePad would certainly help fit the bill of this Wii U release reaching its "true potential", especially if online and Miiverse sharing — for example — were also part of the package.
What do you think of this? Is it a genuine leak, or is Amazon making it up? Just how hyped would you be to have a stage creation tool and 'board game mode' in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U? Let us know in the comments below.

I would love this, I hope it's true
If it for some reason doesn't have a stage builder, that would just be crazy. A HUGE step back from brawl.
Awesome!
Someone's going to be very angry...
what a tease…but a part of me feels like there's so much more we dont know yet about SSB WiiU version and hopefully we are in for sum surprises because im actually happy not knowing everything right off the back…this, Bayo 2 and Captain Toad have really made this holiday season incredible for me
A leak....
Not to be picky; I'll believe it when Sakurai shows it.
And if Stage Builder is returning, hopefully it will include a truckload more builder parts and truckloads more customization. Brawl's one felt like it was still in its beta stages, in my opinion.
Board Game? If it's true, I'd like to see that
Oh boy. And the 3DS version keeps looking more incomplete with every news flash... (if this holds true, that is).
...From the site that had no idea what a Wii U was from the beginning. lol
I'd say this is an intended leak from Nintendo. This comes after the Sakurai interview saying that they're working on an announcement that will be available soon. What they need to do now is to create a buzz before the announcement takes place. What better place to do that than Amazon? They revealed the marketing text to Amazon after that, with only the board game as the big news.
@triforcepower73 Indeed, good point. I pretty much ignore the Stage Builder, to be honest, but would love to play other's creations! I've fleshed this out, anyway, as Miiverse and online integration with a Stage Creator could be terrific.
@triforcepower73 Except Brawl's stage builder wasn't that good..... Nothing at this point would be a step back from Brawl. No tripping, faster gameplay, more balance, better overall stages and characters, Trophy count, no more stickers(please oh please) an even bigger soundtrack, its already 10x better than Brawl and it'll roughly be 16x bigger than Melee. If stage builder is back and better "" if it's not even in the game "".
Yeah, Master and Crazy Orders being the new event mode makes too much sense now that I think about it... The stage creator was a no brainer, but I really hope they make it significantly better this time around. The board game thing is the one that really has me intrigued... I guess that one would be Smash World, but how would that even work... Maybe like chess but with smash battles to determine the winner of every encounter?
It will no doubt be more fleshed out, slightly more indepth and a lot better than the Stage Builder in Brawl.
I just hope that a course creator will be a future DLC plan for Mario Kart 8...
Poor Nintendo
im hoping for 8 player mode where players can team up and fight each other, i like that idea, but who else would like that, it doesnt have to be a mode that u have to play, only when u want to play it, it would have to be a big map and tell me who else would like that
There's another detail on the Amazon page: Look at one of the screenshots they have below the description. One of them is showing the character select screen. And there are almost no characters unlocked
I can imagine Nintendo not being pleased with this...
I guess @rjejr took my advice and continued making wishes for Sakurai to fulfill...
The board game can be cool if it ties to amiibo.
So the starting roster for the Wii U version seems to be (at most): Mario, Bowser, Rosalina, DK, Samus, ZS Samus, Link, Zelda, Villager, Pit, Kirby, Fox, Marth, Greninja, Pikachu, Olimar, Little Mac, don't know, Mega Man, Sonic.
So it's 20 vs. almost 40 in the 3DS version. I like that it's a lot smaller and a lot more characters have to be unlocked!
@manu0 You mean you don't know Shulk?!
Anyways.. These modes are welcome additions if this image is legit.
@B3ND3R How can you tell it's Shulk from Amazon's tiny image?
edit: Ahh now I see it: It's Wii Fit Trainer
@Tsurii897
I could be wrong, but his powers extend to Sakurai, not to Aonuma
You know, if Nintendo would just do something really crazy like announce the modes in a game that is being released 5 weeks from today then maybe they wouldn't have to worry about leaks.
OTOH maybe they are just being fashionable as this seems similar to the leak iOS 8.1 guide Apple had earlier in the week.
I think this is true, and pretty much pbvious, but as a cautionary note I bought Go Vacation on Wii just b/c Amazon had a line listng online mulitplayer. Turns out there is no online at all in Go Vacation and Amazon deleted the line AFTER the game released.
And "board game" mode seems like an obvious addition, Nintendo has always been board game crazy, MP 10 is coming out in 2015, Wii Party has several iterations as well. So yeah, I'll never ever use it but it gives the game something easy peasy to add that the 3DS version doesn't have.
If true, I definitely on "board"
That is great! Not sure I would personally design some but I'm sure there will be a way to download more popular stages like you can in Pushmo I think. I'm sure there will be some great designs that extend this games life out significantly.
@jariw Nintendo hasn't joined the intentionally-leak-something-to-stir-up-a-buzz party yet. This is just Amazon either breaking the embargo or making stuff up.
@sinalefa - Wishing. Begging. Pleading. Groveling. Whatever it takes.
@Tsurii897 - Zelda U? After we hear more about Splatoon, Mario Maker, Kirby's Curse and Wooly Yoshi will I even start thinking about Zelda. I can only obsess about so many games at 1 time. And XCX. So many Wii U games, so little Wii U news.
@jariw - "I'd say this is an intended leak from Nintendo." "What better place to do that than Amazon?"
Seriously? What better place to leak a Wii U game than on the biggest US retailers website that doesn't even SELL the Wii U? I hope you were being facetious and I just misread it.
@KiwiPanda
I'm pretty angry at this but I know you mean the staff at Nintendo. Esp over their excuse over not having a solo-player akin to SSE.
I still like what I hear though and as @StephenYap3 stated, I'll prefer to see it from Sakurai himself. I hope they release a NDirect soon. I have so much going on in my life now but I can squeeze in 15mins a day of SSB... I know I can. I have to!
@rjejr
I have always wondered about that. They sell all of the games, but not the systems themselves, although you can still get them via their other merchants.
@rjejr They do sell Nintendo games, and SSB U is a game.
Can't wait to play smash bros on wii u on a nice big screen been playing destiny non stop until smash bros comes along and jan 2015 is captain toad
@sinalefa - Yeah, the unverified conspiracy theory is that too many people returned their DS or 3DS consoles (I forget which) b/c of scratched screens so Amazon stopped carrying Nitneod hardware. But it's only ever been speculation, nobody knows for sure outside of Amazon and Nintendo. Maybe not even Nintendo?
Just an FYI - Amazon US has that listing, Amazon UK doesn't, yet.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Super-Smash-Bros-Wii-U/dp/B00B8QDNV8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1413568343&sr=8-1&keywords=ssb+u
@jariw - Yeah, and I would understand if Amazon wanted to leak it to generate sales, but you said Nintendo leaked it on Amazon, and I just can't believe that theory under the current circumstances. Why not Gamestop or Walmart or Target's website for a leak? Or just have an ND and forget the leaks? Not saying it wasn't on purpose, just can't believe Nintendo would purposely choose Amazon to leak it on, that doesn't make sense to me.
I do hope they improved the Stage Builder feature a bunch. The Brawl one was fun and you could create cool stages with it, but it was also pretty bare-bones with very basic tools and very boring backgrounds and all that.
Please make online a true element in Smash Wii U. I might have to get this at launch, it is turning out really well. Plus it comes to US first, I think.
See, THAT's what I want the gamepad used for. That's what it's perfect for. Forget about forced touchscreen controls - give me the opportunity to create stuff with it. This is why I'm immensely hyped for Mario Maker, and now my Smash hype has just blown through the roof.
Who knows, maybe someday we'll get a SimCity- or Civilization-like game on Wii U.
@rjejr @GregDavisBlows Perhaps you're right. It might be the other way around to what I thought: since Sakurai said the announcement would be soon, Amazon felt they could reveal the marketing material they've got.
Nintendo: "Damnit, Amazon! Not again!". But seriously, I would like to see the board game mode. Though I am a little disappointed that the Master and Crazy Hand modes probably won't let you play as them if this is true.
@manu0 I'm pretty sure that's just the E3 demo image
seems legit
@Kaze_Memaryu Wasnt it obvious from the start ?
The 3DS version alsways came of as some sort of experiment. Its the first handheld Smash Bros and also the first game to push the system to its very limits. And with that, it did a mighty fine job.
Its a fantastic game on its own and shouldnt be measured by the home console version.
I guess thats why they abandoned the subtitles, to have both games stand on their own, instead of being THAT one smash game, if you know what i mean.
Board game mode! I'm VERY interested to see what this entails.
@Einherjar Performance-wise, that's absolutely true. But I'm more concerned about the immense lack of options in general, and the comparably low replayability. The final nail in the coffin would be to keep stuff like coin matches, Adventure/Tournament Mode, and/or Special Brawls to the WiiU version - which are all easily implemented into the 3DS version, yet are painfully amiss.
Besides, Nintendo brought the comparison issue upon themselves by trying to sell SSB4 off as a dual-platform release instead of making it more apparent that SSB3D isn't just an early 3DS port. And by comparison, even the content of SSB3D falls much shorter than necessary.
Awesome!
OHHJSRHIDYKC!!!!!!
YESSS!!!! OHHH MY GOSH!!!! I THINK IT'S REAL!!!!
So I wonder if they are going to be snarky about the name of the direct? "Looks like we don't have a choice!" like they did with Shulk. I thought that was pretty funny.
Things like this are the reason I opted to wait for the Wii U version of the game seeing as although the 3DS version is excellent, I have a feeling this one will be better!
Board game mode? Sounds a lot funner than that smash tower rumor that was happening a while back. I can really see it being the 8-player smash option though (I'm hoping that isn't a bring your own amiibo tag team thing).
Interesting to see if this board game does come to light.
@ricklongo
This would be excellent. I can think of no better way to use the Pad than this sort of thing. But a real Civ game, not a watered-down console version like Civ Rev was ... ugh.
As far as Smash, the more I read about the Wii U version, the more disappointed I am that I got the 3DS version, because I very likely won't get both.
I'll believe it when I hear it from Nintendo.
Super Smash Party.
@Kaze_Memaryu I can definitly see your concerns. But like i said, for a handheld title, its offers enough content.
Its basically a pick up and play game, without modes that take an awfull lot of time to complete.
For me, the 3DS version serves as some sort of warm up tool, something, to hone my skills on the go, to be able to match friends wherever we meet or just to have a quick dose of fun at the sidelines.
I never expected the "full package" from it, and always saw it as a companion game to the console version. Therefore, i was not disappointed in the slightest.
Also, the fact that the WiiU version already takes longer to develop shows, that it will be more rich content wise by default, since both games use the exact same gameplay framework.
In a sense, its not the next Smash Bros, its the first handheld Smash Bros, and im more than happy with it, even though it does not offer as much content as other versions. It offers exactly what it needs to, and im perfectly ok with that.
The board game is a nice surprise. I'm probably gonna be disappointed because my hype is so high, but it should be great nonetheless.
@rjejr
Amazon UK sell systems. The thing is, I suspect they just haven't sold enough consoles in the US (wii u), and people just end up buying them from shops as they are about the same price as online. And so they haven't bothered to order another lot of shipping containers from Nintendo. Also, they're tax avoiders. They are evil, and the corpse-lord Jeff Bezos is their cruel cult master. Who knows the machinations of a despot's mind?
@Kaze_Memaryu The only thing with you that I agree with that I want back in Smash 3DS is Special Smash, but even then I'm fine without it for the most part.
If the stage creator is good enough for me to create the Smash 64 stages, I'm good.
This is a great leak. Hopefully it's hinting at a new Smash Direct and soon.
The hype is real.
I hope this is real.
@noctowl 30 hours really isn't much. Took me around 5 hours to unlock all stages and characters, and it already bored me at that point, and I sold it after finishing Classic on 9.0 with all chars except Mii Fighters, clocking in at around 50 hours (some All-Star and matches with friends in between, online was disappointing due to lag and no proper matchmaking).
Just keep in mind, my definition of "complete" will most likely differ from yours, and that's how it should be. I'm not telling anyone to stop playing with my stern criticism, just that what it offers is by far not enough for my taste.
My bro will love a stage creator. Interested to hear more about the Board game mode, if it's true. I recall hearing another rumor about a board-game style mode and it sounded pretty cool.
The board game mode is probably simply like 3DS classic mode just more dynamic so no one should expect it to make some amazing new mechanic
@Ryu_Niiyama The "Looks like we don't have a choice" line is reference to the line Shulk says in Xenoblade before a battle. But it did sound snarky given the recent leak lol
A board game mode sounds neat. Super Smash Party? Smash Boards? Haha, I wonder what it'll be named.
@ZenTurtle - "They are evil, and the corpse-lord Jeff Bezos is their cruel cult master."
I was going to make a joke about Bezos not selling Wii U b/c DKC:TF was too difficult for him, who knows what goes thru that guys head. I do know my tax money goes thru his company though, NYers have been paying tax for about 2 years now, maybe 3.
@Vash_Visionz LOL I know, but I always thought they picked that particular line because it would come off as tongue in cheek snark but they couldn't be called out on it. Companies try to put on a clean public face, but they are made up of people... some that know how to get stuff past the radar.
@ricklongo I was thinking the GamePad be used for MMOs and strategy games for me, but I agree with you.
Wait, seriously? The game launches in 5 weeks? Where have I been?
A more detailed stage creator, with online sharing ala the 'Trials' series.
I would literally die with happiness.
I want to say that it's probably true. Of course I don't know, but I really hope so. I dug Brawl's stage creator, limited though it was. I'm sure they'd bring vast improvements on Wii U.
To everyone wondering why Nintendo is pretty much ignoring SmashU, it's safe to assume that is to get as many sales of the 3ds version as they can before switching the hype to the WiiU version.
@KHaceattorney But that's exactly my point. They've already made everything so much better in this than Brawl that if they include the stage builder again, it'll most certainly be much improved. And the clumsiness of Brawl's stage builder could be overcome by using the gamepad to just tap and place blocks and stuff. There are a lot of possibilities. I was honestly baffled the first time I used stage builder that they didn't take advantage of the pointer controls to just point and click where you want to place things, so hopefully they don't not take advantage of what the console offers again.
Just what you were waiting for @rjer
@triforcepower73 I know, right? the stage builder was so bare bones, but that is also my point on why I'm neutral if its back or not. Since it's pretty much confirmed to be back though, I am happy that it is, and hopefully it will be a GIANT improvement from last time.
@KHaceattorney Agreed.
I'm ready for Super Smash Party
Amazon is full of lies. Just hoping that Nintendo let them in on it this time
This would be very cool, I'm interested in information about a board game mode to tide me over until Mario Party 10.
Hopefully we have a lot more customizations in this game's Stage Builder.
Just imagine if you could transfer your custom stages to the 3DS version.
Make it a better Stage Builder this time around.
This game looks awsome
@AlexOlney OMG YES.
Cant we just say that Amazon hates Nintendo so they leaked all this stuff. Can't we just get on with our lives?!
Cant we just say that Amazon hates Nintendo so they leaked all this stuff. Can't we just get on with our lives?!
@AlexOlney You took the words right out of my mouth.
Brawl had a stage creator if you dont remember but whats to be so different about this one ? Then we have board games, Mario Party FTW !
