Re: Sega Is "Evaluating" Its Own Netflix-Style Subscription Service

Jayenkai

Hey, Sega.. How about, instead of a monthly subscription, we pay upfront. I'd pay £299 for.. say.. a 4 year subscription to some Sega games. .. Maybe it'd come with a box we can plug into the telly, and a controller or two..?
And then start adding new games into the mix. You could even charge extra for those "new" games.. Like maybe £39 for a new game? Gosh, that'd be cool.

Re: Your 'Nintendo Switch Year In Review 2024' Stats Are Available Now

Jayenkai

I lost my Switch to my Mother, last year, during the house move. (Her ps4 was packed away, she "borrowed" the Switch, and now I don't have a Switch!!)
Apparently "I've" played 273 hours of Puyo Puyo Tetris, this year, and not much else!!
... All year I've been playing the "should I buy a Switch or wait it out for the Switch 2" game.

Re: Talking Point: Is It Time For HD-2D To Take A Break?

Jayenkai

There can never be enough of anything, ever.

I remember back in the SNES days when people grumbled about there being way too many Mascot Platformers, and journalists would give anything to kill the genre off, completely.
And then Donkey Kong Country happened.

Never stop doing anything, ever.

Re: Tetris Forever Switch eShop File Size Revealed Ahead Of Launch

Jayenkai

If the "Game", being made up of mostly 8-bit and 16-bit era games, is fairly small... Let's be generous and presume it's about 256Mb.

The file size being over 5Gb is roughly 20 times the size of the game.

On my Switch, right now, the top 18 games are over 1Gb according to the Data Management page. Some as big as 16Gb Golly gosh!!
But I have TONS of games under that threshold. And don't forget those NSO emulator bundles, each with loads of games in each collection. Compare and contrast those filesizes with this.

Now, imagine if all of those took up 20 times the necessary space.
Imagine that...

I'm not annoyed about having 5Gb games, I'm not "worried" about the storage space. I'm grumbling that the game's taking up WAY more space than the actual game itself should be taking up.

Five?!
.. it's got history videos and stuff, hasn't it...? The sort of thing you'll watch once and never again.
Could they not have just streamed those. Could've made a documentary and put it on Netflix. Heck, could've just dumped everything on YouTube so everyone can watch and you get bonus Ad-income.
But no..
Five gigs..
That's just stupid. There's really no good reason for that.

Re: Bayonetta Star Jennifer Hale On The SAG-AFTRA Strikes: "AI Is Coming For Us All"

Jayenkai

Over at AGameAWeek I've been making silly little mediocre mini games for the better part of 2 decades, now, and in an alarmingly small amount of time, I've seen the AI grow from "It can just about do Pong, barely", to "It can make a game better than I can, within the space of a few seconds.", to "It can make up its own Doom, now, on the spot, in realtime."

For a short while, that was the most disheartening thing I'd ever seen, and really put a damper on what I do. I kinda lost faith in it all, and though I didn't specifically say "Alright, fair enough, game over", I certainly did feel it at points.
But I'm a hobbyist, and at the end of the day, I still have the ability to hobby away and make my fun little projects.
That's what my mindset is, now.
I'll carry on making my little games, because that's what keeps me occupied. My extremely limited audience will likely decrease to myself and My Mum!!! Meh, whatever. It's still fun for me to do this, even if nobody cares about the end result.

But I don't do what I do for the money. And I REALLY do worry about those who do. If your whole livelihood depends on being able to do something that an AI can do with ease, you're going to struggle. And sooner, rather than later.
But the genie's out of the bottle. And there's no going back.
I think we need a better solution than "Let's try to stop it from taking our jobs." because.. I think it'll likely do that, anyway.

Re: An Unofficial 'Club Nintendo' Anthology Is Hitting Kickstarter Next Month

Jayenkai

Nice. I love in-depth content, and am an avid reader of all things retro. I wonder what the write-ups for each item will be like.
I hope it delves into things like "this promotional item was created to celebrate the x anniversary of y franchise, which happened on the nth of Monthary." and things like that. Maybe taking a peek into the designers, and maybe even proto-pics and things.

Re: Random: Nintendo Updates The Domain For Its Japanese Site

Jayenkai

I expect we'll be getting a similar one in other places. They're probably just making it so they can market a singular "Nintendo.com" and have a redirect take folk to the appropriate "/country", easier, without any browser security panicking about a redirect to a different domain.
