Re: Sonic's Co-Creator Yuji Naka Made A New Game, And You Can Play It Right Now

Jayenkai

@Clyde_Radcliffe Neither do games in the Apple Arcade. I've been sucked into that, head line and sinker. No ads allowed. No IAP's allowed. It's brilliant!!!
And most Apple Arcade games work with gamepads, though it's a pain to have to keep syncing my PS4 gamepad to the iPad and back..
Would be great if Apple released a proper gamepad, and bundled it with an Apple TV device.
Why are they so reluctant!?! I dunno..

Re: Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania Director Says He Wants To Make A New Game In The Series

Jayenkai

We've seen other Monkey Ball games, and there's a reason everyone rushed to get Mania, even though Mania is essentially a 20 year old version.
It's the same deal with Sonic games. Sega have this obscure thirst for adding new mechanics to things which definitely don't need any new mechanics.
"Old game, new levels" isn't all that bad, Sega. We don't mind.. Heck, make them add ons for Mania, and fix up Mania's issues whilst you're at it.

Re: Talking Point: Is There A Better-Looking 20-Year-Old Game Than Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II?

Jayenkai

They gave away that new Star Wars Squadrons game on PSPlus a few months ago.
I blasted off, rushed towards a good close up view of the nitty gritty of the main ship, and ...
... was severely disappointed, thinking to myself "boy, I'm sure that looked better in that GameCube Launch Title...

Because I couldn't remember if it was called Rogue Leader, or Rogue Squadron.
What I did remember, was that it looked better than the tripe I was playing on a PS4 Pro.
I closed the game, deleted it, and pugged in the GameCube, where I spent the next hour or so having infinitely more fun.

Re: GTA Trilogy Dataminers Find Missing Music In Code As Problems Mount For 'Definitive' Release

I picked up Saints Row 3 expecting to have a nice "Wander-em-up" game, where I could admire the scenery and views, without my motion sickness getting in the way..
How much did I play?
You know in the tutorial when you're on a giant pylon, looking down at tanks, and having to blow them up by swinging around and around and around and around and around and around..
Vomit-city!
Didn't get past that.

I was hoping to get this and have a fun wander without throwing up.. It's not looking good, folks!

Re: Looks Like Pokémon Brilliant Diamond And Shining Pearl Are The Exact Same ROM

Jayenkai

"But I'm old, now, and I know this is a scam. It's evil! RAWR!!!"
But kids are still kids. And if you were still a kid, playing Pokemon in the playground, and you had Diamond and your friend had Pearl, it'd still be awesome, right?

If they added a little more randomisation into the game, it'd be even better. Imagine a completely randomised landscape with random evolutions and more..
I mean, we ALL have exactly the same copy of Animal Crossing.. But with SO many differences between each player, it's fun to play and find the differences, meet up to trade fruit and furniture. Things like that.

Perhaps Pokemon oughta do that, rather than sticking to the simple A vs B approach.

Re: Soapbox: Can We Please Retire The Phrase 'Lazy Devs' Already?

Jayenkai

I definitely consider myself to be a lazy dev, this year.
Last year I managed to write 113 games. This year (so far) I'm only up to 59.
There's no excuse for such tardiness, Jay. You're just being lazy.
Don't give me that "oh, but I've been writing my own programming language in the background" excuse.
For shame.
Lazy Jay.

Re: Random: Unpacking's 14,000 Audio Files Make For One Hell Of A Polished Game

Jayenkai

Cool. Reminds me of the foley sounds I have at ShoeboxOfGames.com , for lifting, placing and shuffling the cards, moving playing pieces, dropping tokens, rolling dice and more.

Except mine's only a small library of about 40 or so sounds. I tend to rely on adding pitch and volume changes to those, to give the illusion of more variety and more precise range of taps/clicks/etc, rather than actually storing hundreds of such sounds.

I can't imagine how long that must've taken to record/capture/cut/slice all of those effects.
Most of my audio was recorded in the one single session, making use of a single box of Monopoly Gamer (Mario Kart edition, no less!) which happened to be by my side the morning I started writing the collection!!
