"News: $20 expansion will cost you $20 if you don't own it" is what you consider "very newsworthy"?
The game was never advertised as a complete edition. The box clearly states what's included (base game + upgrade) and the Nintendo Direct plainly articulated what was on offer.
This is about as newsworthy as saying Tears of the Kingdom isn't bundled in as a combo pack.
I don't mean to offend the author here, but I find it unfortunate how complete non-stories get a headline on every single site nowadays, because if others are running an article, so must EVERYONE else, regardless of whether its actually newsworthy.

Having (roughly) Steamdeck/PS4 power in a Nintendo handheld gets us to that point of vastly diminishing returns, where the perceived gap with current gen power consoles becomes fairly negligible.
Being able to run Metroid Prime 4 in 1080p handheld or 120fps with mouse mode... it's a dream come true!
This is an example of people latching onto every little thing to rile others up. Be it for attention, clicks and views, or a fanboy attempt to slander the system any way possible.
This is the LEAST offensive comment I've ever read. It's disgraceful how far some are reaching with this.
Don Mattrick caught flack because of his smug arrogance and condescending tone. This? This is just saying hey, we understand times are tough and some may not be able to swing it. So we're providing multiple other options at $350, $300 and $200 to accommodate consumers who are more price sensitive.
And theyre absolutely correct. That's a smart move. Keep Switch on the market as a lower priced alternative because some consumers may not be well suited to the $450 price bracket.
Criticizing a game costing $80? Absolutely justified. Criticizing Switch 2 Welcome Tour not being a pack-in? Also justified. But people are swan diving off the deep end to make controversy over the most benign statements or revelations.
I think some are just desperate to see Switch 2 fail and are doing everything they can to persuade others to not buy. "See! They're greedy! You should boycott! See! They're just like Xbox One- you should be so outraged! The extent some are going to in order to foment outrage is beyond anything I've seen before.
I won't defend $80 games. I won't defend an interactive manual being charged for either. Because those are legitimate criticisms. But this? This is ridiculous.
And it's not gonna work. It's just keeping Switch 2 in the spotlight and increasing publicity. Which is good for Nintendo. But somewhat aggravating for people like me who would like to go online to discuss all the other exciting aspects of the system and games but just sees headlines stirring up discontent day after day. YouTubers with 5 videos in a row with some lame criticism or rage bait title.
This is not directed at anyone in particular, but rather, is a general statement I need to vent about.
So tired of "Switch Killer" and "Steamdeck Killer". They're terms used in console war fanaticism. When endorsed and embraced by journalists it encourages the masses to adopt such language. And I think that's harmful.
As for being a "Steamdeck Killer", you can't kill what's already dead. And I don't mean that to offend. It's just a fact. Steamdeck is at 4 million sales after 3 years. You could TRIPLE the sales of Steamdeck and still fall short of the Wii U. It's literally a niche enthusiast device only the most avid handheld and PC gamers will care about. Switch 2 isn't gonna kill it, because it's not selling anyways! And Steamdeck couldn't even scratch the surface of Switch 1, a full generational leap behind the Deck- it certainly won't put a dent into Switch 2.
Yet I already know, once Steamdeck 2 releases people will be talking about it being a "Switch 2 Killer". It'll go on to sell 3 million units over its lifetime but everyone on the internet will act like the whole world has one and Switch 2 isn't relevant anymore.
Let Steamdeck owners enjoy their system in peace without using language that flaunts how Switch 2 could "kill it". It instigates animosity. Can't expect PC fanatics to tone down their rhetoric when Nintendo gamers use terms like "Steamdeck Killer".
And likewise, Deck owners should let Switch 2 gamers enjoy their console in peace. All the insecure "Deck > Switch 2" nonsense is childish cope. Stop letting ego drive you to attack and marginalize another platform, willfully deceiving yourself to hold onto the belief your purchased plastic "reigns supreme". Deck is cool and has a lot of benefits. Just enjoy it. No need to put others down to artificially build yourself up.
That's fine. After all, it IS imperative the game itself remains flawless. I wish the sharing was smoother but hey, it's functional. As long as I can look and make out where someone is and what they're doing, that's all I need. And frankly, I probably won't even use it. The CHAT I will use. For sure. But sharing video? Not so much.
Still, I'm glad the option is there. Maybe I will end up using it more. Who knows.
Combined with per game control customization settings you could even have different sensitivities set for each game stored on a system level.
@BigRed40 Thats a killer idea actually. Joycon just magnetically clasp into it and it has feet to broaden the gliding surface and a mound to fatten it on the backside of the joycon so it's rounded like a mouse for your palm to rest...
I guarantee some company will release such a peripheral.
@SillyG Seems it IS all on a NSW2 cart. The misinformation about being a Switch cart with download code came from 1 college age support rep who told a customer over the phone that was the case. Another said the opposite. But now Marvelous came forward and set the record straight. Its a Switch 2 cart including the upgrade.
And the box art doesn't actually say anything about having a download code. Plus the load times wouldn't be able to be reduced from a Switch 1 cart so that doesn't even make sense in the first place.
I'm very pleased with this. And I hear the NSW2 has extremely low latency. Potentially could end up the lowest latency version. But even if not, its apparently pretty low.
Switch 2 is a powerhouse. It's essentially a PS4 Pro that's also a portable PS4. But with 120fps, HDR, VRR (via G-sync), DLSS and 12GB LDDR5 RAM (same as PS5/XSX)
I am. And almost everyone who tried it said it feels amazing, and just as precise as a real mouse. The fact it instantly switches back and forth in and out of mouse mode without any button or system setting is incredible.
It's definitely going to be a gamechanger for me. But I get not everyone is into it.
@Ryu_Niiyama I had issues with joycon not working if they broke line of sight with the docked Switch, and download speed maxed at 35mbps while I get 500mbps on Steamdeck. Think Switch 2 is addressing both those issues.
@rjejr A legitimate question but ultimately I must ask, what difference does it make? Whether they say 5x or 50x it won't change the actual results on screen and the gameplay experience.
Zelda BotW and TotK were 900p at 25-30fps. They now run 1440p 60fps. Metroid Prime 4 is 1080p 60fps. It now runs 4k 60fps or 1080p 120fps. Yakuza 0 was 1080p 55-60fps on PS4. It runs 4k 60fps on Switch 2. Reports coming in that Street Fighter 6, Split Fiction, Cyberpunk, etc all seem very comparable to what's on PS/Xbox.
In the final analysis, that should bring more clarity than any "10x power" statement.
A guy from KindaFunnyGames demo'd the Switch 2 and he's a diehard OLED elitist and even he was impressed with the screen, and said actually, it's got an amazing contrast ratio and comes remarkably close to OLED. Said the HDR was quite impressive too. Speculated it may be mini-LED LCD.
@tedkiwi Not to doubt you but could you provide a source for me please? Everything I've read has stated its reciprocal. Granted, I was kinda shocked seeing 43% on Taiwan, 50% on China and 26% (I think?) on Japan. But then I was told those are the exact rates they are taxing us.
It's unfortunate but it's the reality we live in. Reciprocal tariffs which tax other countries the same amount they tax the US with tariffs, plus inflation ($80 game today = $60 in 2017 when Switch launched per inflation calculator), plus the cost of high speed cartridges... all this combined means the increase to $70 isn't necessarily enough. Ergo, some games cost an additional $10 above that. Other countries have to price in the same ballpark to avoid import scalping.
Understanding why doesn't mean I like it though. Price increases are always a bummer. I'll be avoiding paying $80 as much as possible. The Switch 2 bundle = $500 (so $50 for Mario Kart) and the 3 other $80 games are Switch 2 editions that have added features/content. All 3 of those have upgrade packs (and are free with NSO). And thankfully DK Bonanza is just $70. The $50 Mario Kart means saving $20 under $70 so I can swing x2 $80 games down the line and have them effectively be $70. After that I'll reassess my strategy.
For physical gamers, BestBuy will be offering $20 back for every $150 spent on Switch 2 games/gear, effectively making $80 games cost $70. Good info to know.
They probably won't include gyro aiming BUT with mouse mode, that would be a fine substitute. Anything besides solely using an analog stick to aim. That's like... cave man era method of aiming in video games.
@Ghaznavi convoluted system to encourage people to buy the same game on multiple consoles
With respect, I think you should rewatch the trailer. In no way does sharing games encourage buying multiple copies. On the contrary, it encourages not buying multiple copies. The whole point of sharing is allowing someone to play without them buying a separate copy.
As for being convoluted, I'm not sure how you'd make the process of sharing more simple than pressing a button to send a game from your console to another's. As for using on a secondary console, it offers a way to play without internet checks. But if you're fond of the current system, you can keep using it. This is an optional setting.
1) This is OPTIONAL and can be toggled off/on in settings
2) This is superior to the system we have now for lending games as you cannot currently do that
3) This is both superior and inferior to the alternative option of using a secondary system and having it check internet each time you play. If you want to play offline for long periods of time without an internet check, virtual cart is superior. If you're swapping back and forth games all the time, probably best to just use the current setup.
All in all, this is a W. You're not forced to use it, and it only adds the option to lend digital games to family members and adds the option to play on a secondary console without internet checks each time you launch.
Never cared much for 120fps. If others do that's cool (my brother being all about his 120fps) but for me I barely see a difference. To me it's halving battery life for little to no gain. I'd rather run 60fps and have double battery, or better performance or higher resolution.
If Switch 2 has VRR, even less of a reason to care.
Don't think there's any shame in an exclusive jrpg remaster not topping a brand new multiplatform AAA release, even more so accounting for the fact Nintendo only reports physical sales, if I remember correctly.
The fact it's right on its coat tails is actually quite a feat. Xenoblade X is clearly exceeding expectations, both in quality and sales performance.
@Damo If you hear of any sites selling preinstalled Lites with the Touch OLED please post to let us know. I don't have the skills to install (especially the touch version) and the only pre-installed units are going for $600 on Etsy atm. I want a Lite OLED but not at that price.
The release of Virtual Boy library on a new working emulator for 3DS that plays them in 3D and allows changing color from red to anything on the spectrum, is the biggest breakthrough in retro homebrew for the last 2 decades imo.
@UltimateOtaku91 Good catch. I'd heard the 158 number but I believe it's based on VG Chartz and tbh even Jim may not know the actual final tally. Either way he's for sure rounding up- unless there's an official sales release from Sony, we go by last official numbers, not rounded up to the even 10m. The odds of it being EXACTLY 160m are astronomically low so the number definitely either isn't accurate or is rounded.
We need specifics with precision accuracy.
Not that it matters. Switch is gonna crush 160m anyways so it makes no difference really.
"oh ya? OH YA??? Well we actually sold 160 million, not 156m so THERE. Beat THAT"
Lol I don't think that pittly little 4m is gonna make a difference. Switch is gonn smash PS2 either way. 156m, 160m... doesn't make a lick of difference.
@Ralizah I love games that look and run so well on Switch there's literally nothing I can do to improve it. THAT'S when you know you've done your job correctly.
Unicorn Overlord, 13 Sentinels and GrimGrimoire Once More are all exceptional Switch ports. Maybe 13 Sentinels had slight frame drops in certain battle segments but nothing major.
This game went from, "what is that weird looking game" to "oh this actually looks interesting" to "oh snap it's Vanillaware?" to "several ppl previewing the game are throwing words around like "classic" and "masterpiece" to "I just played the demo. Day one digital deluxe. Day one physical. How many hours are left til release again?"
I mean, ya. It's emulation facilitating piracy on a current gen platform. They don't just have the legal right according to the letter of the law, they have the moral right according to the spirit of the law.
I say that as someone who appreciates and supports emulation 100%. I don't pirate, unless you count English translated versions of Japan-exclusive releases from hardware dating several generations back. But I do value emulation and see it as an vital aspect to gaming as a whole.
Be that as it may, ya... what did you expect. For them to be like, "well this emulator is facilitating illegal piracy of our current generation video games we sell on the retail and digital markets, but ehhh, you're fiiiiine... go for it bro. We'll pretend we're not looking"
You don't have to like it. But it demands respect. And anyone who fails to respect it doesn't have the intellectual capacity for me to even want to explain why they should.
@GrailUK
Well, virtually every game is incomplete if the metric we use to judge is, "any content released post launch". If we never buy any physical game that falls under that umbrella, I imagine we won't be buying many games. But more power to whoever feels that way. I got no problem with it, to be clear. Just think it's a very stringent criteria that won't leave much to choose from, like a dollar bin at Walmart after Black Friday- you'll come in to find 73 copies of NBA 2k 18 and Just Dance, and that's about it.
I know you were being a bit tongue in cheek, and, this response is less for you specifically and more for others who may genuinely agree with your post.
I'd submit that a small shift in perspective can have a huge impact on how we perceive things. For example, the game is as content-rich as it was yesterday, and will be just as content-rich tomorrow. If the game was worthwhile then, why should additional free content that has nothing to do with the previous content-rich release have any impact at all on whether it's worth buying? Aside from a technical asterisk of no longer containing "all" content that's ever been developed for it on the physical medium, but that seems a rather arbitrary reason to determine whether a product is worth purchasing or not, especially in an age where day 1 updates, day 10 updates, day 36 updates, Ubisoft Connect content, etc exist. That cart never stood a chance of being "complete". Compared against games like Overwatch that contain a 250 MB launcher on the cartridge and require the game be downloaded, I'd count any game that can be played start go finish on the cart worth buying. But that's just me.
I guess some ppl do have that proclivity toward obsessive compulsive behavior, for lack of a better term, and owning a physical release of a game that launched content afterward may inexplicably gnaw at their peace of mind. For those such gamers, I do feel bad. Not just because of how uncomfortable that must feel and the aggravating need to constantly monitor everything before purchase, but how that seems to suck the joy out of the hobby, at least to me from an outside perspective.
I'm not sure it a more complete edition will release later. My gut tells me no, as this isn't some mega expansion, and even if it were, Ubisoft always goes with the "Gold Edition- expansion DLC code included in box" approach. But regardless, I encourage everyone to play this game. Physical, digital, whatever floats your boat. Heck, subscribe to Ubisofts monthly Sub for $15 and then cancel if you must. But play this game!!!
I agree more bosses could have elevated to perfection (I've only just started, but 3 isn't much).
Even so, I LOVE the Roguelite adaptation, and I usually hate this genre. It just works so well for Splatoon! And while Octopath Expansion certainly had its pros over Side Order, I was ready for something new and different for a change. The campaign of Splatoon 2 and 3 are excellent, and then Octo Expansion on top of that? It's SOOOO much Splatoon goodness!
But I didn't really want another group of levels like that. This is exactly what I needed to spice things up, and the insane weapon skills you get are so incredible it's worth playing for that alone.
I appreciate this as I fell in love with NitroDeck...
But then Mobapad M6 HD joycon released and I fell out of love just as quickly as the new king of joycon took the crown and has no intention of letting go any time soon.
Literally every official joycon feature except the IR sensor on right joycon, and 2x more extra. HD rumble, NFC, gyro, 15 hr battery, independent joycon wireless with system wake, HALL Effect analogs, mechanical buttons using Omron switches, swappable d-pad with rocker d-pad, swappable faceplates with round or octagonal gates, swappable analogs, macros, turbo, rear mappable buttons, best d-pad I've EVER used, no hyperbole. 6 Zangief pile drivers back to back. Yeee-aaah come get some!!!
At $80, same price as official joycon, but way more ergonomic, twice the features and feeling equally high quality in terms of materials and production assembly... I never wanna use anything else ever again. Even bought a 2nd pair to use as a Pro Controller with a disassembled charge grip. It's THAT good.
@rjejr The lineup is the final evidence Switch 2 is right at the door. For 7 years Nintendo has provided a consistent lineup of high quality new games. The 2024 spread includes a Mario vs DK GBA remake, a Luigi's Mansion 2 3DS remake, a Paper Mario Thousand Year Door GameCube remake, and Princess Peach Showtime. Not saying these aren't good games. Paper Mario TTYD has been one of my most desired Switch releases of the last 5 years. But it's clear they're putting the vast majority of their development into Switch 2 at this point, with a few easy remasters to fill the gap between now and Switch 2 launch.
If we're lucky, we'll at least get Metroid Prime 2 Remastered on Switch this year, maybe even Prime 3 Remastered. Beyond that, I'm really not expecting anything more. We're too close to Switch 2 at this point.
Switch will likely get a port of Metroid Prime 4 when it launches with Switch 2, and a year or two of light support from Nintendo beyond that. But generally speaking, Thousand Year Door is the last truly hype Nintendo exclusive for Switch, for me (unless Prime 2 and 3 get remastered). I'll still buy and play Luigis Mansion and Mario vs DK. But those aren't games I've got marked on my calendar. Paper Mario TTYD is a game I'll be taking off work for.
I'm ready for Switch 2 though. Btw, Prince of Persia Lost Crown, I just beat last week. Best 2D metroidvania I've ever played. Even tops Metroid Dread.
I hope Switch 2 is bc with joycon now that Mobapad M6 HD are a thing. They're the perfect joycon. No way Switch 2 joycon top these things. HD rumble, NFC, Gyro, split wireless with 17 hr battery, HALL Effect analogs, mechanical buttons using Omron switches like gaming mice, d-pad swaps with rocker d-pad, rear mappable buttons, faceplates swap with round or octagonal gates, anti friction rings, swappable analogs, turbo, macros, makes Switch OLED ergonomic as Steamdeck, and d-pad is best I've used in my entire life.

Re: The Switch 2's Battery Is Almost A Match For The Steam Deck's
Also consider games running 120fps in handheld. That's what will drain games down to the 2 hour mark.
I'll stick with 60fps to get 3-4 hrs. Just like on Steamdeck I always stick to 30fps
Re: Halo: Master Chief Collection For Switch 2 May Not Launch In Its 'Complete' Form
Even if it's 1-3 I'm all about it
They probably won't include gyro aiming BUT with mouse mode, that would be a fine substitute. Anything besides solely using an analog stick to aim. That's like... cave man era method of aiming in video games.

Re: Nintendo Announces 'Virtual Game Cards' For Switch, Unlocking Digital Lending
@Ghaznavi
convoluted system to encourage people to buy the same game on multiple consoles
With respect, I think you should rewatch the trailer. In no way does sharing games encourage buying multiple copies. On the contrary, it encourages not buying multiple copies. The whole point of sharing is allowing someone to play without them buying a separate copy.
As for being convoluted, I'm not sure how you'd make the process of sharing more simple than pressing a button to send a game from your console to another's. As for using on a secondary console, it offers a way to play without internet checks. But if you're fond of the current system, you can keep using it. This is an optional setting.
Re: Nintendo Announces 'Virtual Game Cards' For Switch, Unlocking Digital Lending
Re: Random: New Video Highlights 120FPS Gameplay On Modded Switch
Never cared much for 120fps. If others do that's cool (my brother being all about his 120fps) but for me I barely see a difference. To me it's halving battery life for little to no gain. I'd rather run 60fps and have double battery, or better performance or higher resolution.
If Switch 2 has VRR, even less of a reason to care.
Re: Best Nintendo Switch Open World Games
Sniper Elite 4.
Even though it's map based with chapters, each map is very large and completely open world in design, and it's exceptional.
Re: UK Charts: A Strong Xenoblade Debut Can't Escape Assassin's Creed's Shadow
Don't think there's any shame in an exclusive jrpg remaster not topping a brand new multiplatform AAA release, even more so accounting for the fact Nintendo only reports physical sales, if I remember correctly.
The fact it's right on its coat tails is actually quite a feat. Xenoblade X is clearly exceeding expectations, both in quality and sales performance.
Re: Rumour: A Switch 1 Direct Presentation May Take Place This Week
Probably better to do it before than after. Imagine interest would be lower after. But we'll see.
Re: Feature: Switch 2 May Be Imminent, But I'm Loving This Custom Switch Lite OLED
@Damo
If you hear of any sites selling preinstalled Lites with the Touch OLED please post to let us know. I don't have the skills to install (especially the touch version) and the only pre-installed units are going for $600 on Etsy atm. I want a Lite OLED but not at that price.

Re: Homebrew Games Summer Showcase 2024 - Celebrating 120 Titles Across 15 Platforms
The release of Virtual Boy library on a new working emulator for 3DS that plays them in 3D and allows changing color from red to anything on the spectrum, is the biggest breakthrough in retro homebrew for the last 2 decades imo.
Re: As Switch Approaches The PS2's Lifetime Sales, Sony Moves The Goalposts
@UltimateOtaku91
Good catch.
Re: As Switch Approaches The PS2's Lifetime Sales, Sony Moves The Goalposts
"oh ya? OH YA??? Well we actually sold 160 million, not 156m so THERE. Beat THAT"
Lol I don't think that pittly little 4m is gonna make a difference. Switch is gonn smash PS2 either way. 156m, 160m... doesn't make a lick of difference.
Switch is coming for that keaster
Re: UK Charts: Unicorn Overlord Makes The Top Ten And Sells Best On Switch
@Ralizah
I love games that look and run so well on Switch there's literally nothing I can do to improve it. THAT'S when you know you've done your job correctly.
Unicorn Overlord, 13 Sentinels and GrimGrimoire Once More are all exceptional Switch ports. Maybe 13 Sentinels had slight frame drops in certain battle segments but nothing major.
Vanillaware just knows how to optimize.
Then you look at other games like Pokémon or Rune Factory 5 and it's like... guys, what happened???

This game went from, "what is that weird looking game" to "oh this actually looks interesting" to "oh snap it's Vanillaware?" to "several ppl previewing the game are throwing words around like "classic" and "masterpiece" to "I just played the demo. Day one digital deluxe. Day one physical. How many hours are left til release again?"
Re: Reaction: Nintendo's Switch Emulator Fallout Is Shocking Only Because It Took This Long
Re: Prince Of Persia: The Lost Crown Devs Promise New Content & Free Updates In The Future
@GrailUK
Re: Review: Splatoon 3: Side Order - An Addictive Roguelite Just Shy Of Excellence
@Octane
Ya for sure.
Re: New And Improved Nitro Deck+ Announced For Switch, Pre-Orders Live
I appreciate this as I fell in love with NitroDeck...
But then Mobapad M6 HD joycon released and I fell out of love just as quickly as the new king of joycon took the crown and has no intention of letting go any time soon.
https://www.mobapad.com/products/mobapad-m6-hd
Re: Pokémon Legends: Z-A Announced, Coming To Switch In 2025
Oh this is for sure a Switch 2 launch window title.
And I'm glad. Legends is the ONE Pokemon game that really seemed to grab be. The gyro aiming and throwing Pokeballs at wild Pokemon was a big factor.
So incredibly glad they're continuing Legends. This is the direction I want to see Pokemon take.

For real.
I'd even go so far as to say it's my fave 2D metroidvania ever made. Even topping Metroid Fusion and Dread.
It's insanely good.

Patch notes for notable games are always news.

Re: Switch Sales Pass 139 Million, Will Be "Main Business" Heading Into 2024, Says Nintendo President
@rjejr
The lineup is the final evidence Switch 2 is right at the door.
