Re: Review: Wreckfest - An Absolute Banger (In A Good Way)

JaxonH

I got this physically and was actually surprised at how fun it was driving around on 4 wheelers ramming into everyone. Good rumble integration too. Looked decent in handheld. Not perfect. But not terrible.

I think I'm gonna grab this digitally. Wasn't planning on it but after how much fun I had, I've had a change of heart.

Re: Gallery: Take A Closer Look At Xenoblade Chronicles 3's Characters And Combat

JaxonH

Absolutely 🔥 🔥 🔥

This looks like a generational leap compared to Xenoblade 2, in the same way X was compared to 1. The sheer volume of quality of life improvements and refinements is astounding. I especially like the quest marker path, given one of the most common complaints in XC2 was players unable to find the objective.

The characters are stunning- massive improvement over the last game! And the theme is definitely more mature, which I love. They've taken the best elements of the previous games, enhancing what worked and dropping what didn't.

This very well could end up being the greatest JRPG of all time.

Re: Square Enix Reveals Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion, Arriving On Switch Later This Year

JaxonH

@rjejr
Seems KH caused some serious emotional damage to Switch fans lol. Now everyone's hyper-paranoid that any release beyond pixel indies are cloud, even when they're not announced as such.

Eh. People are gonna be people. Let em freak out, if that's what they wanna do. Once the game releases they'll realize they put themselves through needless misery for nothing.

Part 3 will be a 2028 release on PS5 and 6 months later will get a PS6 port, for $80 base version, and then 6 months later the whole Trilogy will get a port for $199 as a bundle...

Once I bought the first on PS4, then watched it become irrelevant as they released the Intergrade edition on PS5, that's when I was like ya, I'm done. I'm waiting for Steam, and for the full game to release in its complete form. And given that's so far away, it's hard to muster much excitement for it.

Crisis Core looks dope though. Being a prequel to the original game that's kind of self contained, and being available hybrid right off the bat, I'm down for that. It's good to see Switch get this game. It shouldn't have needed to sell 110 million units in 5 years to finally be treated with the same respect as PSP, but 3rd parties have a massive Sony bias, especially the Final Fantasy team, I'm just glad it's finally getting it's due. Persona 3,4,5 will solidify its place as a true PSP successor.

Re: Gallery: Square Enix Shares Brand New Screenshots Of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion

JaxonH

@KoopaTheGamer
Nonsense. There's only a small handful of non-native Switch games and they're all ground up 8th and 9th gen AAA titles (barring the KH collection but that was because porting a dozen games for $90 wasn't deemed financially viable). This is a PSP remaster using new models and voice work.

This looks right on par with other Switch games. Not to mention, cloud games are always announced as such immediately so as to not create disappointment. That didn't happen, ergo, it's a native Switch game.

Just like these

@KBuckley27
Of course they always show PC screenshots. But the Switch version will be the same thing, just not as high res.

Re: Square Enix Reveals Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion, Arriving On Switch Later This Year

JaxonH

@rjejr
Kingdom Hearts was double digit number of games. Not financially worth it to port almost a dozen games that had been out on other platforms for many years for a measly $90. Aside from that, every single game that can run native has run native. And this game obviously can run native. It's a PSP game with new models. There's zero reason to suspect cloud. From a statistical sense, only 6 games out of 4,000+ have been cloud. That's a 0.15% chance based on what the data tells us.

Besides which, cloud versions are always announced as such immediately. This wasn't, ergo, it's not a cloud version.

Persona is coming to Switch also. Confirmed by NateTheHate. Likely at the Nintendo Direct. Not sure if it's just 3 and 4, or 3, 4 and 5. But at the minimum 3 and 4. Nintendo likes to hold announcements for their own reveals for some reason. Though if 5 isn't coming it's possible 3 and 4 are announced later since they're not coming til next year. Really wish they'd just let Switch get announced alongside other platforms. It causes undue stress on the fanbase.

I doubt the remake is coming to Switch too, it was just a hypothetical example to convey the technical demands of games that actually would require cloud.

But by the time this entire game is released, it'll be basically 2030 (winter 2023 means 2024, which means the last will be 2027-2028, and another year for exclusivity to end), and we'll be talking about Switch 3 and SteamDeck 3 rumors, at which point the game likely will be released on whatever Switch exists at the time.

I'm glad it's optimized for SteamDeck, but I likely won't play until all 3 are on Steam or Switch 2. Will revisit in 7-8 years and reassess.

Re: Square Enix Reveals Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion, Arriving On Switch Later This Year

JaxonH

@PepperMintRex
I think people drastically overestimate the probability of games being cloud. Of the 4,000+ games on Switch, only half a dozen are cloud, unless you count the Kingdom Heart games separately. And aside from that collection of games, they were all grossly demanding. KH was just laziness, lacking the effort required to port that many native games for $90 total. Not to mention, every single cloud game to date was clearly specified as such at time of announcement.

The overwhelming majority of Switch games are native, even from Square Enix. Dragon Quest XI, Life Is Strange, Final Fantasy X/X-2, Final Fantasy XII, Neo TWEWY… No. I can confidently say this game will be native.

Now, if the FFVIIR gets announced for Switch, that would have a reasonable possibility of being cloud. But this? This looks right on par with what Switch is capable of.

Re: Capcom Announces Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak Demo, Out June 14th

JaxonH

Gore Magala! Espinas! Daimyo Hermitaur! Pyro Rakna Kadaki! LUCENT NARGACUGA!!!

I can't believe they're actually adding Gore Magala and Lucent Nargacuga! Lucent is a beast. It turns invisible, shoots poison spikes and is way larger than a normal Narga. I still have flashbacks farming cloudy moonshards from him in MH3U. But I love it 😀

And a Frontier monster?!! The flagship Espinas?!! This is the first time since Lavasioth and Hypnocatrice in Freedom Unite that we've gotten any Frontier monsters in the main series. This is nuts!

Re: Hands On: Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes Is Shaping Up To Be A Belter

JaxonH

Been playing the demo and I’m seriously impressed.

This is the best Warriors game I’ve played (not counting Persona 5 Strikers which I don’t consider a Warriors game). The strategy of commanding units adds that missing element of tactical depth other Warriors games lack, and this time they’ve actually streamlined it in such a way that it doesn’t come off as confusing.

I was always buying this, but now I’m hyped. 4 full chapters with save transfer to full game means I’ve got something to kill the time until Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak on June 30th. And assuming I finish the demo before June 24 I’ll have a full week to play the game beyond chapter 4 as well. I have no idea how I’m going to squeeze Mario Strikers and KOTOR II in.

Re: Surprise! Doom Eternal Is Getting A Limited Run Physical Release On Switch

JaxonH

I'll grab it.

Game is awesome on Switch with gyro.

@SenseiDje
I'm not sure where you're getting "artificial scarcity" from but that makes no sense at all.

Limited Run creates exactly as many copies as is preordered. Open preorder windows for everyone, and then they order exactly as many as needed.

I keep hearing people repeat this and its just wrong. That's not what artificial scarcity is.

Re: Switch Network Failure Prevents Users From Accessing eShop And Digital Games

JaxonH

@rjejr
Still employed at Switchworld. Though half the ppl have since left. It's only me, my brother, my programmer, a QE and a process engineer now, that I know of.

When Switch Sports released we had a bowling tournament in my office. And every year for Nintendo's e3 direct, I bring my programmer in and we watch together. When Monster Hunter Rise was announced I may have made a fool of myself, just a bit. I lost all sense of professionalism and started acting like a Packers fan with a cheese wedge on my head.

Re: Switch Network Failure Prevents Users From Accessing eShop And Digital Games

JaxonH

@rjejr
Tbh, I did mod my original model Switch but lost interest for two reasons. First being, no native GC/Wii support like Wii U, and since I buy all my games to support the devs there's really not much incentive through roms of Switch games. Secondly, you had to go through the sequence every time the system powered off, and I just didn't feel the juice was worth the squeeze. Hacking takes a LOT of dedication researching and keeping current on knowledge, fixing issues that come up, etc. I'm at a point in my life I'm too lazy to mess with it. Also, the original model has terrible battery life.

If the OLED could be modded, and I could get GC and Wii running, I'd look into it, but right now the only way is a specific mod chip imported from China, and it has to be a certain type which is rare to find otherwise it won't fit right or has issues with voltage due to being designed for the v1 model. It takes a lot of expertise in soldering and I'm just not up for all that.

But ya. Primary Switch for OLED, never have to worry about DRM for alternate systems, or connecting online via Hotspot when at work (which I used to have to do with my Lite to launch a game since it wasn't my Primary).

It's just easier with one Primary system, all games digital on that one system, no DRM checks, just play any game at any time wherever you want however you want.

Re: Switch Network Failure Prevents Users From Accessing eShop And Digital Games

JaxonH

Didn't this just happen with Xbox recently, too?

Except with Xbox you couldn't access purchased games on your main system. This seems to only affect secondary systems which need DRM verification, since you can play digital titles offline or in airplane mode on your primary system without any verification required (except the initial unlock for a preloaded game).

Explains why I didn't experience any issues. I stopped bouncing between multiple systems once I got my OLED. Now I just use that for docked and handheld.

Re: Soapbox: Chasing The 'Real' Monster Hunter Rise Ending Has Restored My Faith In Online Gaming

JaxonH

So good having writers here who actually enjoy Monster Hunter.

I'm actually surprised to hear you never play online. I was always single player only but eventually needed help in MH3U, and started joining random lobbies. I typically play with a friend in Rise, but the Join Request is super convenient.

Why not drop by the Monster Hunter Rise forum here after Sunbreak releases? Me and TeeJay will be hunting (as we have hunted together every generation for nearly 10 yrs now) and others will be hunting with us sometimes, too. TeeJay and I tend to voice chat over Discord while hunting, but most others don't. Either way is fine.

I'm HR230 and have a check mark next to every quest in the game. I'm more than ready for Sunbreak.

Re: The "Finishing Touches" Are Being Added To No Man's Sky On Switch

JaxonH

@SteamEngenius
Nonsense.

They've been working on it for well over 2 years, and that was as of time of announcement.

Furthermore, it takes far less work porting a game than building from scratch, and, we don't know team size for the bulk of the game. It's normal for team size to shrink as a game nears completion, since there's nothing left for many to do (art, voice work, story, etc).

From what we've seen this is a miraculous port, looks great and appears to run extremely well too.

Re: Splatoon 3 Will Support Cloud Saves For Offline Play, According To Official Game Page

JaxonH

I lost my Splatoon 2 save when I got my OLED, as I forgot to do a transfer and instead relied on cloud saves. Admittedly that was my fault.

But it was a blessing in disguise. I started a new save file after having not touched the game for 5 years, and am already Level 16, beat Octo Canyon and Octo Expansion, got all the amiibo gear, and am Professional 300+ in Salmon Run, with endgame gear for Turf Wars.

It got me back into the game, whereas I likely never would have played again otherwise.

Re: Nintendo Files Patent To Combat Online Cheating And Software Modification

JaxonH

@Yorumi
It's an interesting suggestion, but ultimately I think you may be overstating the effectiveness and simplicity of such a solution, while it's drawbacks also need to be discussed.

Per Bohemia Interactive on this very topic:

He says he and Bohemia Interactive operate under two rules in regards to cheating, that "anything on the client can be and will be hacked" and that "server side code is only as secure as the server."

"The best solution would be to run everything server side, which we cannot do for the most part," he says

Having all the files for a game on the developer's server would prevent most cheats, although Harton cautions that this method still leaves open the "possibility of packet injection and manipulation." If there's nothing to detect the manipulation of the encrypted packet data moving between server and client in place, cheaters could trick the server into thinking the character on the client has more health than it actually does. Moving everything server-side also brings us into the thorny bounds of heavy Digital Rights Management, of course, but Harton seems to believe that players have a while before they have to worry about that, owing to the current limitations of internet latency and speed.

So they acknowledge the benefits it could bring, but also point out its simply not a viable option. Furthermore, the player forfeits more control (and thus ownership) of the software. Doesn't seem like a very good tradeoff. If it was the magic bullet you suggest, and was easy and cheap without any downsides, everyone would be doing it. Yet hardly anyone does. Nintendo is not an outlier here.

Re: Nintendo Files Patent To Combat Online Cheating And Software Modification

JaxonH

@Yorumi
That seems a little premature to declare. We don't yet know how well this works because we don't know much about it. Clearly they believe it has potential or they wouldn't be patenting it.

As for dedicated servers, I'm not sure. I understand how a client side server allows them access to say, "I have infinite defense" or whatever, but that's on the PC side. On consoles things work a bit differently, since files are hacked first and then they join online. No hacking is occurring during play, so servers shouldn't make a difference one way or the other. I also suspect it's cost-prohibitive given how few games do it, and AFAIK those games still have issues with cheaters.

But it's something to look into

Re: Nintendo Files Patent To Combat Online Cheating And Software Modification

JaxonH

@Richnj
Your presupposition is faulty, assuming the two are mutually exclusive. Nearly every pirate will also follow hacks which come along with it. The overlap will be severe. And that's also not aggounting for the fact joining a subreddit for a known criminal activity isn't something everyone will do, so that number likely underrepresented the pirates as well.

Idk how many are ruining experiences, but I know it's enough that experiences do get ruined.

Re: Konami Is Reportedly Working On Three Silent Hill Projects

JaxonH

@Thaliard
I'm not trying to rile anyone up.

I'm just flabbergasted at how a few select influencers and media sites keep talking about this series, as if it's some kind of historical masterpiece.

Imo it's a dime a dozen horror game. Not bad by any means. But not deserving of the insane attention ppl are giving it.

I can appreciate the aspects you find notable, but I'm just growing tired of hearing ppl artificially inflate this series to be more important than it is. Same thing people do with Eternal Darkness. A minority praising it like it's the best horror game of all time, when in reality it's just yet another B grade horror game, decent fun but nothing more.

And that's not even accounting for all the killer multiplats and ports that are chef's kiss on the hybrid OLED, like Zombie Army 4, Portal Companion Collection, etc.

Re: Feature: Handheld Face-Off - Nintendo Switch OLED Model Vs Steam Deck

JaxonH

I bought both- here's my thoughts:

Switch OLED can't be beat. It's small and light enough it can fit in my back pocket in the Hori Slim Case, which is essential for bringing to work each day with coffee in one hand, keys or timecard in the other. The screen is WAY better and WAY more vibrant, it also has an amazing kickstand with removable controllers that make portable tabletop play possible as well as local multiplayer anywhere, and easily docks to the TV within seconds out of the box. Games have 5+ hour battery life, some as long as 10 hrs (Final Fantasy IX) and it never gets hot or heavy holding it. The price range of $200-400 for Switch is also much more reasonable than $400-650 + extra dock cost.

That's not to say Deck doesn't have a place at the table, but it does have a number of disadvantages. It's not a good option for Switch games (most run at worse resolution and framerate with far less battery life and even then, still have hitches, crashes and poor support for anything relying on joycon features), but it is a great option for games not on Switch- heavier games Switch can't handle. It's not as light, or portable, can't do tabletop, screen is far more dull, battery life is less than v1 Switch and the fan noise is annoying, and worst of all, half the games aren't compatible and of the ones that are, half of those still crash or have issues... but it's the best option to play those games portably that aren't on Switch. So until Switch 2 releases, it's a clutch handheld.

Truth is, I have a PS5, Xbox Series X and PC (2080 ti) and never use them, because Switch is just so easy to jump in and out of, and I struggle staying captivated by a game that's shackled to the tv. Deck helps make games like Monster Hunter World and Mass Effect Legendary Edition more viable, since they're not on Switch. It's not as ideal as if they were on Switch OLED, but it's a viable alternative given they're not on Switch.

I think it's a good compliment to plug some key AAA gaps- if anything, Deck has replaced PS5/Xbox. Since previously, those were the systems needed to play certain key titles not on Switch. Now I can play on Deck/PC as a hybrid version, with gyro aiming. I have no reason to really play anything on those consoles now. Except for Gamepass games playable with gyro thanks to XIM Nexus.

But ya. A good complementary handheld.

Re: NoA President Responds To Alleged Working Conditions At Nintendo, Finds Reports "Troubling"

JaxonH

I just don't care.

This isn't some scandal where a CEO was embezzling or refusing to pay workers, or offering promotions for sexual favors.

Some contractor didn't like that they weren't treated the same as hired ons? Who cares.

People make a mountain out of any molehill they can find nowadays, partly because the media is on a constant witch hunt for controversy, and doesn't care if it's overblowing a situation, as long as it drives traffic, and of course they'll claim they're just doing their jobs.
