@Dodger I know what you mean. Just from personal experience, my grades definitely would’ve been helped by not playing games so much as a teen.
That said, video games can also be a positive influence. I was heavily into JRPGs which definitely improved my reading skills. Also this is going to sound odd but the “making of” DVD extra of the Final Fantasy movie inspired what would eventually become my career.
Also, there’s a social aspect to gaming, especially when young. I used to regularly game with friends and family, and plan to do the same with my children. I think it’s healthy in moderation, similar to TV/movies. You can have too much of anything and gaming is just another thing to balance.
@Pojos98 I know what you mean. It feels like no matter where you look online there’s someone being hysterical over something. Sometimes it’s justified, and sometimes it’s about cute fictional creatures. Let’s just look forward to the inevitable review bombing tomorrow.
Pokémon for me. I don’t have to justify myself to anyone but I will anyway. I’ve enjoyed the last 3 gens, with Sun/Moon’s main campaign being possibly my favourite in the series. Even if they’re not pushing the hardware, I’m sure I’ll enjoy it. Also, that its region is based on England is really exciting. I’m looking forward to seeing how they take inspiration from my country. Yeah it appears that they lied, and the models still look stiff but I’m ready for another Pokémon game since I skipped Let’s Go. If it disappoints then I will skip the next one but I haven’t been disappointed in a mainline Pokémon for a long time.
Final Fantasy X HD... I was hoping to 100% before Pokémon day but I don’t even know if I can beat the monster arena in the next week, let alone the dark aeons or Penance. I think this might be a game I abandon for a while.
I didn’t go for nostalgia with the others, but I would feel like a traitor if I didn’t go for my first ever Pokémon, Squirtle. Honourable mention to Popplio as I love Primarina.
FFX HD and maybe some Crash Team Racing. It’s been a delight reliving this final fantasy, I think I’ve only played it through 2-3 times, much lower than the PS1 games.
2018 was a weird year for me as it was the first time I dug into indie games. Most of my playtime was on Stardew Valley, Hollow Knight, Shovel Knight, Gris and the Steamworld Dig games.
I’ll be honest, this is a dealbreaker for me. I have a couple of PC gamer friends who are into overwatch who I’d like to play with. At the moment it’s a no, but if crossplay is added then I’m in for sure.
I could play on PC but I spend all day at a PC for work, I want to be as far away from them as possible in the evening!
Edit: Just read comments. Can see the disadvantage Switch players would have but we could always have an option to turn off crossplay, and PC players could opt to avoid Switch players if they want. Personally, I love being the underdog.
Getting to grips with Crash Team Racing mainly. I’m also playing Forager but turns out I’ve triggered a bug which stops me from getting about 3 achievements. Kind of annoyed at that since it was patched out of the PC release.
In most cases I think review bombing is silly but here it seems justified. 1: because it’s essentially a reskin mod of the previous game. 2: because EA.
I lost my Switch charger while travelling so I’m slowly running it down on SNES Online until I can pick up a new one. At about 30% battery and playing Super Metroid for the first time, loving the Alien vibe.
Spyro is the one for meeee! Getting increasingly interested in Dragon Quest too. But also I’ve always wanted to play Ni No Kuni. And then there’s Untitled Goo— ARGH TOO MANY THINGS!
DQXI demo mainly... I feel mostly positive on it. It’s not an instant buy yet but I’m “only” about 4 hours into the demo so that could change. Also RPG Maker on the 3DS.
Stardew Valley, it’s sort of the screensaver of my life. If nothing’s going on, that game is on. Also will try out the Dragon Quest demo. Never played a Dragon Quest game before but big into Final Fantasy so I’m intrigued.
I think it visually it’s great. It looks like a lot of care went into it and the art style, even if it is so heavily inspired by DK. I’d say the jet pack mechanic it separates itself enough for me.
The platforming also looks fun and quite varied (that longish section with the spikes felt tense)
My only concern is that the camera jerks around a lot, especially when stuff explodes/on impact. Sometimes just moving around seemed to cause excessive camera movement too. I hope that’s ironed out or there’s an option to slow the camera down.
I owned Space Harrier 2 as a kid and absolutely hated it. Traded it with a friend for a licensed McDonalds Run’n’Gun game. You collected shiny M’s and Ronald McDonald congratulated you at the end of each level.
Fair play to them, improving based on feedback. I remember the feature you did with them on Castle of Heart but after watching the trailer wasn’t that interested.
This on the other hand looks great, it’s vibrant, got a charming visual style and looks fun to control. I’ll definitely be looking out for reviews.
Between this and the new Yooka Laylee we’re doing alright for new 2D platformers!
I can believe this. My partner and I have bonded while playing Mario Kart, same with my previous ex.
Outside of that we’ve also had a lot of fun together with Rayman Origins & Legends. Snipperclips on the other hand was incredibly frustrating, the puzzle solving was fine but the more physics-y stuff basically just led to arguing.
This was a fun fest! Sad to see them go but they went out with a bang. I’m a pretty average player but got in three 10x battles and won them all... to no avail as I was Team Order haha. Now to continue grinding out ranked and the Octo Expansion!
As annoying as the “release bad, fix later” culture is, I feel it could make a cool art exhibit.
Artist could produce a terrible painting and have it put in a gallery. In the middle of the night they go in and touch it up over the course of a month or so until it’s better. It would be a comment on patch culture in general, how games/social media/streaming are constantly quietly being tweaked.
@Luffymcduck These are my thoughts. Battles still look stiff and lifeless. They may be telling the truth about remaking the models but it’s a shame they passed up the chance to make them look nicer and improve the animations.
I’ll probably pick it up but I’m more excited for Yo Kai Watch 4, something I never thought I’d say.
This is the main thing that bugs me about the cull, I don’t mind them reducing the amount of available Pokémon in an effort to increase quality but it’s obvious that isn’t the case.
Battles still look very static, the Pokémon models are the same as Gen 6 (from like what, 2013?) and the attack animations are really stiff. The overworld looks nice but it doesn’t feel like a huge leap from Sun/Moon.
Compare that to how Yokai Watch on Switch looks. I know almost nothing about that franchise but the way it looks so dynamic has me sold.
There are things to be excited for with the new Pokemon but there are also plenty of bummers. There’s a semi open world, but a Pokémon cull! It’s set in England, but Megas have been dropped in favour of a bad gimmick.
The NES well is really running dry, I hope they’re leaning closer to SNES than Gameboy. The leak from a while ago suggested they are at least.
I’ve barely played any SNES games outside of Super Mario World and the Final Fantasys so would love to catch up on games regarded as classics like A Link to the Past and Super Metroid.
Speaking personally, as exciting as new reveals would be, I have the most horrendous backlog and there’s so many promising upcoming games too. I’d just be happy with updates to previously announced games. Boring answer!
@rhyeee3216 I’ve never had any interest in the Warriors games but my lord, a Final Fantasy one would have me on board. That or Pokémon but I can’t see that happening.
I love 2D platformers, kinda spoiled with so many on the Switch. This looks really good, the gimmicks look familiar but I’m not complaining, and the visuals are lovely. 3D puzzling hub sounds fun too.

Pokémon and Lego Harry Potter. I’m kinda underwhelmed by Pokémon but still enjoy the raids.

Pokémon. Having a lot of fun in the wild area...
That sounds like a euphemism.

If this is satire it’s quite funny.
If this is sincere it’s horribly depressing.

Re: Poll: Which Starter Pokémon Is The Best? Choose Your Favourite Grass-Type Starter
Man, Grass is the hardest for me. Gone with Snivy but so easily could’ve been Rowlet, Chikorita or Treecko.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (November 2nd)
FFX HD. Gradually making my way to 100%... it’s kind of overwhelming how much stuff (and busywork) there is to this game.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (October 26th)
FFX mainly, but will try out the Jet Kave Adventures demo, and maybe some Crash Team Racing.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (October 19th)
FFX HD, about halfway through the story. Despite the awkward voice overs from most of the cast it’s still an amazing game.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (October 12th)
FFX HD and maybe some Crash Team Racing. It’s been a delight reliving this final fantasy, I think I’ve only played it through 2-3 times, much lower than the PS1 games.

Forager for me. I bought this yesterday and have already put at least 5 hours in. Incredibly satisfying and quick gameplay loop.
Re: Manage Your Own Aquarium In Megaquarium, Coming To Switch Next Month
This sounds fun! I’ve got too many games in the backlog but I’ll add this to the wish list for sure
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (September 21st)
Spyro 2 on Switch. Really getting into hunting down orbs now. The challenges are fun, water not so fun.

Oh... “glitching.”
Well... I’m here if you need me...
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (September 7th)
Spyro! Waited so long to play this. Beat the first game this morning, excited to continue. Will also try out SNES at some point.

Lapis x Labyrinth on Switch. Might complete it this weekend. Will also be sneaking in a bit of RPG Maker on 3DS.

Lapis X Labyrinth for sure. Crazy, crazy game. I’m about 5 hours in and still not really got to grips with it.
Might play some Smash, getting an urge to try out the online.

Was totally worth it.

Steamworld Dig 2, going for 100%. Got 34/42 artifacts, starting to get tricky!
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (July 27th)
Steamworld Dig 2. Loved it so much last year I’ve decided to replay and aim for 100%.

There will always be other sales, I say through gritted teeth.
