Unbelievably stoked about this. I’ve gone off the core series but still like the designs and world of Pokémon so it’s nice to have a spin off that looks good. I also loved the original so this is kind of a no-brainer.
I’ve recently decided I want to Git Gud at Smash as I’ve only been a casual player up until now. Going to spend this weekend practicing my main boy Pikachu.
I first played this on iOS and now prefer those controls over the original‘s dual screen setup. Didn’t get Switch version but it sounds like handheld is good and docked not so good.
I’d personally be excited, if I didn’t get burned with the last announcement of an announcement SE made about this franchise. Hopefully it is a sequel, we’ll see!
I’m currently in the process of falling off hard, to the point where I’m actively disliking it each time I play.
I’ve spent about 90 hours in it since launch and I would say the last 20 hours have been a chore. The music is grating, characters are shallow, crafting and terraforming are tedious, fishing is mindless and everything just takes way too long to do. The tool breaking is also maddening.
It’s not even that I don’t like this style of game, Stardew Valley I love and that was made by one person.
A small bit of Animal Crossing but mainly Spyro Reignited. I’m feeling a bit burned out on Animal Crossing. The repetitive nature of it is just kinda adding to the repetitive nature of lockdown.
@BionicDodo I agree that she should have researched before buying but she only wasted £5 so it wasn’t horrific. I sent her a link to a decent article of best indie games to point her towards more quality stuff.
I do think however that Nintendo is responsible for what appears on its own storefront. Extreme example but if my supermarket was selling talc with asbestos sprinkled in I would be annoyed with the supermarket for not vetting the brands it allows in, as well as the brand. Unfortunately it’s a problem with most big online services though, everything from the Steam store to Etsy are filled with low quality guff to sift through. At least they have reviews on their sites to make things easier while browsing.
A friend of mine bought a Switch the other day and while waiting for Animal Crossing to arrive she went on the eshop to buy a cheaper game (like under £20 so not unreasonable). She doesn’t keep up with gaming news so didn’t know what was good and ended up buying some shovelware and was disappointed.
The eshop is a mess and has been for at least a year. I don’t even think reviews would help considering trash can be discounted by like 95% to look appealing. What frustrates me further is that in the sale section, rubbish will rise to the top and decent stuff will go lower in the list.
@KingBowser86 Personally, I find Blue Sphere more trial and error. I love Sonic Mania but didn’t have the patience for Blue Sphere, ended up preferring the UFO stages (I sucked at both though!)
I’d love a Sonic Mania 2 but instead of including old Mega Drive stages, including Mania style versions of more modern stages. Stuff like Rooftop Run and Seaside Hill but as 2D pixel art. A man can dream!
I can see both sides of the digital/physical thing and I’d say my library reflects that. I buy digitally for games I know I’ll be regularly returning to like Animal Crossing and Splatoon 2 or indie titles. But physical for games I’ll either have big gaps between playing or games I’m unsure about and may want to trade in.
Personally I like the setup we have now, I wouldn’t want to move to an all digital future but it’s cool as an option. If we do though, Nintendo needs a lot more onboard storage from launch.
This was a great game, I’m really looking forward to replaying it one day. Beautiful artwork and sound, incredibly atmospheric. Definitely deserves 1 million sold.
“This way, the game's focus on realism would be kept intact“
Are we talking about the same game? The game where you help a ghost collect pieces of himself and where you sell insects to your local convenience store? If I tried to hand over a bunch of butterflies and fleas to someone working at Tesco Extra I’d get kicked out.
@carlos82 I hadn’t even thought about that, crafting using materials in storage would be great. Or if that’s too easy they could go the Stardew route of having a chest next to the crafting station which you can fill with common crafting materials like wood, stone and ore and the crafting station takes from there.
@carlos82 yes! The eggs I’m more okay with as they’re going away soon (though I do wish the bunny day event was shorter) but crafting multiple baits is incredibly tedious. The crafting issue also extends to crafting lots of a hot item, or crafting weeds into a leaf umbrella. I don’t even bother with the umbrella.
@RupeeClock oh I see, I didn’t realise it had switched publishers. In that case I’m surprised they didn’t just patch out the offending songs but maybe they don’t have something ready to replace the tracks with.
Also I picked up the Mega Drive collection on Switch, mainly to play Toejam & Earl 2 so will give that a bash if I can tear myself away from Animal Crossing!
Great article. It’s easy to forget how alien game language and controls are once they become etched into your brain.
I’m about to be a father (the due date is only a few days away!) and am looking forward to introducing them to gaming in a few years. Hopefully they’ll like it but we’ll see.
Mostly Animal Crossing. I’m right at the end of Dragon Quest XI so I should finish it but can’t be bothered with the grind for the final boss so I’d be surprised if I go back to it this weekend.
Man, I wish I knew this yesterday. I smashed up all the rocks on my island before realising I could dig up trees to reduce my fruit energy. I now need iron nuggets and only have one rock regrown.
I’ll give it a watch. After hearing mixed responses I held off until streaming. While the updated trailer looked amusing, it didn’t look very Sonic-y outside of jokes about his speed. Really hope the Mario movie is set in the Mario universe.
I’m going to bite the bullet and get Animal Crossing even though I don’t really have the money. I’ve had a week of worrying health concerns (not Coronavirus ahah) and job troubles so a cheery little escapist fantasy is what I need.
More people like Vivi than Sephiroth, that surprises me a lot. I love FFIX so I’m kinda biased towards it but I would’ve expected Sephy to be in the top 3.
FFX deserves top spot in my eyes. Incredibly ambitious game for the time. It’s kinda depressing that of the top 10 games only 2 of them were released in the past 15 years.
@PikaPhantom haha actually, yeah that bit is quite intense. I found maybe 80% of it chill but then I could say the same for BOTW and that’s on the list.
Even with no possible death GRIS has a couple of stressful moments, and the Skull Cavern in Stardew can be a nightmare even for seasoned players. It’s a bit of a weird list as few games are chill throughout.
I’d like to throw the Steamworld Dig games into here. There is some occasional combat and platforming but for the most part you’re slowly digging and plotting your route.
I don’t have much time for gaming this weekend but I’ll fit in a little Dragon Quest XI. I just played a little more of the Switch bonus content (Erik’s Part) and it was great. I didn’t even realise this stuff wasn’t in the original game as it feels quite fleshed out (well, Jade’s felt like an anime filler episode)
@carlos82 oh cool, thanks for the update! Maybe it was just their console or that they were recording it messing with things. Sonic 2 is one of my favourites so I’ll get it at some point.
Just a heads up if you’re considering Sonic 2. I was watching GameXplain’s video playthrough of it and there were a few moments of noticeable slowdown. It wasn’t the recording as they mentioned it at the time. To be fair it might have only happened 3 or 4 times over the whole hour of play but if that’s something that bothers you it’s worth looking into.
Edit: Comment above suggesting otherwise. Maybe I’m wrong! Even if it’s only £6 I’m waiting until after payday as I’m completely broke so can’t verify.
If anyone only has £7.49 may I make a suggestion. Rayman is better than Monopoly.
I know it’s hard to believe that one of the best platformers ever made is better than one of the worst board games ever made, but they’re being billed at the same price so felt it was worth mentioning.
If the new Dragon Ball game ends up being good, I’d love that on Switch. A couple of DB games have come already and it doesn’t look overly intensive so fingers crossed!
I listened to the podcast earlier this morning and was surprised he made such a blatant and deliberate hint. Not complaining, I like Peer whenever he’s on. Wouldn’t be surprised if his 6/10 most hyped game would be 3D World too.
The first 2 were perhaps my favourite 3DS games. Definitely stoked by this announcement. It’s tempting to brush the dust off the old handheld to be honest.
Naming aside this is great news! Loved the first two games, a little disappointed it’s probably not featuring the original cast of characters but I trust the writers to think of new stuff. Really intrigued to see where this goes, and if an HD collection will also be coming of the original two.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl #46 - Sonic The Hedgehog 3
While America’s is great, to me the more abstract style on the Japanese box has aged better. Also, I don’t really like borders.

I mean, what even is a weekend anymore? I’m on furlough and isolating so it’s all blending together.
Anyway, Animal Crossing, Sega Mega Drive Classics (Toejam & Earl) and I started replaying Sonic Generations on PC, can’t wait to get to Rooftop Run.

Re: Cooking Mama: Cookstar Pulled From Switch eShop Amid Accusations Of Mining Cryptocurrency
I don’t see why the developers ripping their own music from an earlier game would get their game pulled. They still own the rights to their own music.
It says on the file names that it’s from Cooking Mama 5 which was on the 3DS.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (April 4th)
Animal Crossing, loving designing clothes for it!

Re: Poll: Animal Crossing: New Horizons - What Would You Like To See Added In An Update?
Batch item crafting my god please yes! Not just for bait, but also for crafting a batch of “hot items”
Also, would love to have another line in the inventory.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (March 14th)
Splatoon 2, trying to break into S Rank after a long break away. Dragon Quest XI, in the last dungeon of Act 2.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (March 7th)
Dragon Quest XI definitely. Man, it’s a long game! Runbow maybe with my partner.
Re: Poll: Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Is Out Today On Switch, Are You Getting It?
Nope from me. The art style is nice but the gameplay in the demo put me off and Pokémon was soured for me by how barebones Sword and Shield were.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (February 15th)
I’ve had a tough week so I’ll be chilling with Stardew Valley and wrapped in a warm blanket.
May also boot up Freedom Planet, craving 2D Sonic but played Mania to death.

Taking a break from DQXI to return to Stardew. I’ve decided to finally decorate my farm so it’s not utter chaos.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (January 25th)
Dragon Quest XI S because it’s awesome. Breath of the Wild because I want to draw something from it.

Definitely Dragon Quest XI S, possibly Splatoon 2. Dragon Quest is so good, I can’t believe I slept on this series for so long.

Re: Guide: Pokémon Sword And Shield Expansion Passes - All You Need To Know, Including New Pokémon
I found the base game so underwhelming and low quality (not just graphically, but also graphically) that paying for more of it is not appealing.
Besides, I swapped it for Dragon Quest XI S so unless I buy it again I wouldn’t be able to get it without rebuying.
The Mystery Dungeon game looks quite interesting though. I’ll give the demo a bash to see how it plays.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (January 4th)
I traded in Pokémon Sword this morning and picked up Dragon Quest XI S on sale for next to nothing with the store credit so I’ll be playing that.
I enjoyed the DQ demo more than I enjoyed the entirety of the new Pokémon so it was kind of a no-brainer.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Christmas? (Special Edition 2019)
Definitely: Stardew Valley, Celeste & Lego Harry Potter.
Possibly: Smash Ultimate, Shovel Knight, Puyo Puyo Tetris & Spyro 3.
I’m not really a Christmassy person but looking forward to having the time off to catch up on gaming!
Re: Stardew Valley's Version 1.4 Update Is Now Available On Nintendo Switch
I guess it’s going to be a Stardew Christmas for me! Like others here, I’ve put a lot of time into this. Such a charming game.

Playing Celeste for the first time, really enjoying it. Also will probably go back to the FFX grind when my brain dies from the tricky platforming.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (December 7th)
Stardew Valley because I’m addicted.
Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze because it’s probably not healthy to just play Stardew Valley ALL the time.
