Update (23rd July, 3:20pm): Developer PlaytonicGames has uploaded a new version of the trailer to truly show off its 60fps gameplay. That's right, the new Yooka-Laylee title will run at 60fps on Switch. We've swapped out the old trailer and inserted the new one below.
Original Article: Team17 has released a brand new trailer for the upcoming Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, giving us a good look at a cool new feature which adds a whole new way to play the game's levels.
If you need a quick catch up, the game has players setting off on a journey to rescue members of Queen Phoebee’s Royal Beettalion from Capital B. You'll explore a 3D overworld which lets you jump into 20 different 2.5D levels, each of which contains a member of the Royal Beettalion to rescue.
As you can see in the new trailer, though, these 20 levels can actually be entirely transformed. The titular Yooka and Laylee will discover new secrets and puzzles along their journey which will open up new, alternate versions of the levels already found within the game. This might involve flooding chapters with water or flipping them upside down, changing how the level itself plays, and (kind of) takes the total number of playable levels to 40.
We recently paid the lovely folks over at developer Playtonic Games a visit, chatting about the company's ambition to be more than simply 'ex-Rare' developers and finding out more about the new game's music.
The game launches in Q4 2019. Are you excited for this one?

Just put my pre-order in Amazon UK
I hope my phone is just playing the video at a poor frame rate, cos if that's the game, I'm gonna be really disappointed...
My son loves the first one (he's almost 4), i think he'll be able to play this one without making me as motion sick!
Sounds pretty neat, and hopefully more substantial than the flipping mechanic of Yoshi's Crafted World. All that did was make you run through the level backwards with reduced the scope of interactivity.
Wow. That looks so insanely fun. I can already tell that this will probably be one of my favorite game releases this year, alongside Crash Team Racing.
Frame rate makes me sick 🤮
Can we have 60fps this time please?
Team17: NO
This video is kind of a mess. What’s with that awful wipe cut? I’ll call it the “splat wipe” cut.
This launches too soon for this to not be close to final footage, I’m guessing. And I doubt this is even the Switch footage being shown. I dunno if I can vibe with Playtonic. I was seriously let down by their first title, and what I’ve seen of this title isn’t filling me with tons of confidence.
I don't get it, the video is playing at 60fps but the actual gameplay is not. Why Playtonic? Is it so hard to get framerates just right? Please take your time with this and make it run smoother, thank you.
It seems like the Playtonic folks saw DKC Tropical Freeze and said to themselves "yeah we can take a crack at that." Levels look great, music sounds great, love Capital B lovingly kissing his staff. Really excited for this game, and curious how it will fit into the lore of the Playtonic universe!
Looks a good game at a good price point to me! Pre-ordered as want to support the developers as despite its flaws Yooka Laylee is no way a bad game like many try to claim, it was saddled with a lot of expectation that it couldn't quite handle. Glad Playtonic didn't quit!
Having trouble getting excited for this. Would have prefered Yooka-Laylee 2.
@quinnyboy58
Quit what? Making 3d platformers? 🤣
Oof, that frame rate seriously needs some massive fixing.
Capital B really loves his staff.
Just playing the first game at the moment and can't believe the negativity surrounding this game. I'm freaking loving it so far - all of it (and dare I say – more than Odyssey!).
I know we have a patched version now – but just wow. EXACTLY the sort of game I wanted on switch. Can't believe I listened to the 'anti-hype' for the game for this long. And I'm going to be more cautious of 'professional reviews' going forwards.
I just wish the negativity hadn't diverted them from 3D for this one. It looks great too though.
Cool! Hope it's complicated with doing things in one version and then only being able to take certain paths after that etc.
Looks fine, but my biggest issue with the whole Yooka-Laylee series is, that it lacks an own identity. Character design, atmosphere, soundtrack, humor, etc. is just way to close to Banjo-Kazooie and DKC. And yes, this is actually the point of the series, but other series, that got inspired by others, could manage to develop their own style over the years. Shovel-Knight got inspired by Mega Man and Freedom Planet by Sonic and both series have got their own style in the end.
Yooka-Laylee still lacks this in pretty much everything. It misses its own unique identity.
Looks very nice. Picked up the first one in the sale a couple of weeks back and it’s very enjoyable.
Looks amazing. Im impressed
As much as I want to love these guys, and as much as it has been said before... Take the N64-style platformer out of this franchise and it's just... Nothing.
Looks like a better game for having a more fixed camera imo.
This looks really cool and creative but I hope that the game designers use this well and not too often, otherwise it will just feel like a cheap way to lengthen the game.
I don't usually notice frame rates but did in this trailer. Looks like a bit more of a laid back DKC game which could be nice. With only 20 levels (and the hub world) I'm not sure what to think, guess it depends on the price of the game as to whether it will be worth it.
thats nice and all but all we want is a release date
This is exciting! These guys have a passion for games that is just infectious. Can never say no to a David Wise soundtrack, either!
I wonder if they'll drop the price point for this one. I remember Ubisoft despairing the 2d Rayman games as a financial failure at $50
I have a hard time believing that's Switch gameplay in the trailer.
@tendonerd I believe it's $30 on Xbox and $40 on Switch.
@KayFiOS Yeah, it's not 60fps on my phone, but I believe that the game is. Can't wait to play this smooth 60fps game on Switch!!
Wow this game looks AWESOME! I held off on the original yooka laylee but this is shaping up to be a day 1 for me. Looks like the DKCTF sequel I need 😊
Looking forward to this!! Day 1 purchase for me
Everyone's talking bad frame rate, just watched on my computer and didn't notice any issues. Maybe I'm just not as sensitive to framerates, but this looks like it runs great to me.
@XBontendo
The original video Playtonic had uploaded had really choppy framerate, the article has been updated since then with a proper 60fps version of said trailer.
Sadly, most people here haven't seen the proper one...
Pretty nice trailer.
I’m interested. I love myself a 2D platformer so always happy to see another one looking so good. Will wait on reviews
OK! I'm sold! I've obviously seen the 60fps version and it looks smooooth. Also, the gameplay looks intriguing this time around (I skipped the first game) with overhead exploration combined with DKC-style sidescrolling. Assuming it's good, I'll buy it! 👍
So all of the bad frame rate comments were due to an improper video capture being uploaded? Someone probably just lost their job...
Seems like the devs should have started with the 2D game... then created for the 3D game.
Wow, this game looks butter smooth running at 60fps. I was initially disappointed by the reveal, but this does look a good deal more polished than the original. It seems like a new DKC-style experience.
Cautiously optimistic.
I for one am really looking forward to this. I really enjoyed the first and I love all of what’s going on here. Some people in these comments sounds a bit.... stressed. I dunno guys, I think it looks fun, perhaps a bit side-scroller Donkey Kong with some modern improvements etc.
EDIT: when I said improvements I meant ENHANCEMENTS.
@KayFiOS it's definitely your phone. upgrade yo shiz
I hope this is good! I love platformers. The gameplay here seems a bit run-of-the-mill so far, though, I'm not seeing anything too crazy.
