@SillyG I'm in exactly the same camp, I was saving for a Switch 2 but recent business practices have really put me off. I'm pretty convinced at this point the money is going towards a Steam Deck instead.
@Oldstalk ahah thanks. I completed Hollow Knight vanilla back in the day but I have so little gaming time these days to devote to doing it again. I'd rather spend the little time I do have appreciating the art, level design, lore and music instead. Besides, I haven't made Hornet invincible, the bosses just take like 5 tries instead of 30!
Silksong but I got frustrated with the difficulty so I've started again on PC with a couple of mods to ease the pain. I'm having much more fun this time around.
I'm gonna throw my recommendation in for a 4 year old: Untitled Goose Game. Very light reading, basic problem solving, no fail state or time pressure, easy to play co-op, encouraged to be as chaotic as possible. My daughter has played a few games but Goose Game has really stuck, and I think the low-stakes of it allowed her to pick up the controls naturally. Also Kirby is a hit.
Mario Kart has been the complete opposite. She doesn't like the modes where it plays it for you, but can't control when they're turned off. Little room for expression or exploration and harsh fail state. I love Mario Kart but I think it'll be a few years until that has the chance to click.
I wonder if they're holding off because the early gens depict gambling. I've heard that law changes around it in some countries would make them rated as 18+ these days. Maybe they don't want the weirdness of having to stick Pokemon in the Mature app of NSO next to actual violent games?
@Folkloner I would suggest crab cakes for the speed boost. They're a recipe you get later into year 2, you need a regular source of crabs but it's so good once you get it set up. I personally just have 3 fish ponds with them and fish a few out whenever they get too full. Each crab cake gives a speed boost that lasts the whole day, and it can be combined with coffee and/or a horse for an even bigger boost if that's still too slow.
I finished this earlier and echo it completely. I watched a bit of the cartoon decades ago but couldn't tell you anything from it but I loved the artstyle from the trailer so picked it up.
Very gentle on challenge, and the story is cute. I've actually been ill this week so it kind of came out at a good time personally. I did notice some frame stuttering from time to time, especially in the ending but never so bad that it ruined the experience.
I think I would've liked it a bit longer as was enjoyinv it, but on the other side it felt like it had pretty much no padding so maybe the length was where it should be. Even when you're doing similar puzzles there would be new elements or characters to shake things up and the world is very charming.
I liked Snufkin's occasional snark, the weird characters you meet and the visual style. I put in around 4-5 hours and I think I did everything. I'm sure I'll be returning to play through it again as it was so pleasant.
@Sonicka I'm playing at the moment and that's kind of where I land too. I had a soft lock literally within 10 minutes of booting the game up which was a sign of things to come. The targeting is quite annoying as there's an icon showing what you aren't locked onto right now but will be when you get closer, but it's similar at a glance to the icon showing when you're actually locked on. I've messed up so many times because of that. The penguins are also just an unfun mechanic to have to deal with, and it's quite hard to tell what's going on when they all jump you.
I don't mind the fixed camera so much, the momentum is fun and the levels look nice and interesting so far (a few too many bottomless pits though!)
Last weekend I played through a really good fan game called Sonic and the Fallen Star and I think I’ll do another run this weekend. If you’re a 2D Sonic fan it’s definitely one to check out!
Working my way through NEO: TWEWY still… about two thirds in. Kinda bored but ploughing through since I know if I put it down I won’t pick it up again.
NEO: TWEWY. I’m guessing I’m about halfway. The chapters feel much longer than the original, and sometimes not in a great way when it feels like padding. Still, enjoying it for the most part.
Gradually making my way through NEO: TWEWY and finally accepted that RPGs just aren’t my thing any more. I’ll see it to the credits just to see what the story is about but can’t be bothered with side content or post-game.
I’m doing a series of drawings based on levels from the classic Sonic games. I’ve gathered screenshots from 1 & 2 for reference so this weekend I’m going to play CD and 3&K to get screenshots for those too.
NEO: TWEWY. Enjoying it so far but not super far as I’ve been busy. I was concerned it might lose the magic of the original with such a big gap in releases but the series has still got it!
NEO: TWEWY easily. I’m a few chapters in and really enjoying it so far. I love how the way items, clothes and food were originally implemented has pretty much carried over as well as adding in a bunch of new stuff. It feels familiar but still novel.
If Mario Kart counts, probably Baby Park. My partner loves the chaos of it so we play it a lot.
Green Hill is up there, as is the opening part of FFVII. In terms of Mario, the first stage of Mario 2 I’ve played a tonne since I really suck at that game so had many a game over.
Yep, getting it. I’d pretty much decided about halfway through the demo to be honest but good to see the reviews are positive too. Still kind of hard to believe this exists after waiting so long for a sequel.
@RudyC3 I highly doubt it will be announced this year, if it’s even a thing. It would be silly to announce another Metroid while promoting Dread, it would just confuse things. I would just play it now if you want to.
I finished ABZU last night, was really great. It reminded me a lot of Gris (gorgeous colourful world, no death, artsy fartsy, vague plot) so I’m in the mood to experience that again.
Will first finish the NEO: The World Ends With You demo.
If I get time I fancy going through Sonic Time Twisted again, a fan game in the style of Sonic CD. I was reminded of it while reading the comments on the Best Sonic Games article and definitely worthy of another run through.
I gave the demo a go last night as I was also curious about performance. It was good! Literally the only thing I didn’t like was the way the map isn’t always facing the same direction as the camera. The writing, visual style, and music are all gorgeous. The combat is a bit button-mashy but I liked it still. Overall, excited to pick it up.
I feel sorry for the enemies in modern Sonic games who exist solely as a point to homing attack to. The poor things just sit there waiting for you to mow them down so you can cross a gap.
@Bentendo1609 I don’t understand why the Advance games haven’t been ported to a more modern system. I’m personally not a fan of 2 but really like 1 and 3. The sprites and animations are great, they have so much character.
@Toshiro_Baloney I couldn’t agree more. I’ve tried to enjoy it multiple times but visually it’s so chaotic and abstract. There’s a completed fan game called Sonic Time Twisted which is heavily inspired by CD but is much better, both visually and in terms of level layouts.
Sonic 1 on the Mega Drive got me into gaming so I’ve played pretty much the entire list for better or worse. Not sure which I’d pick as my favourite but the three I gave a 10 to were S&K, Mania and Colours DS. That last one is possibly unusual but I love it for some reason, even more than the Wii version.
I have no idea! I’m unsure what to do with my weekend tbh an it’s already started. I’ve just been wandering around in Breath of the Wild trying to get the Hinoxes and Taluses I missed for Kilton’s (so?) medal thing. Aimless wandering definitely fits the theme of this weekend.
Ovivo, a stark black and white, surreal, physics-y puzzle platformer. I’ve recently gotten into drawing surreal silhouette scenes and this looks kind of similar to what I’m doing so I’ll give it a go.
If I have the time I’ll either play some Sonic Generations on XBox or Sonic 3&K on my homebrew 3DS. A couple of Sonic announcements got me wanting to go back to some his classics.
@RushDawg heck yes! As much as 3K would be great to have, I’d love a handheld collection. If it was up to me, the Advance games would have the camera zoomed out a bit and the DS games would be rejigged to work on one screen. It would probably just be rom dumps though.
I always say the same thing, so here goes: Stardew Valley! I’m ready to put it down for a while but I’m at 99% perfection, I’m compelled to get that last 1% before taking a break.
I’ve only played the Dig games but absolutely loved them. I replayed 2 and 100%’d it, which is the only game this gen I’ve done that for so far. Obviously hoping for Dig 3 sometime soonish.
I had the same kind of thing for my Sega Game Gear. My dad used it to watch football at work, except the resolution was so low you couldn’t really see the ball.
My first shiny was Oddish in Pokémon Gold. I was playing on a standard gameboy so couldn’t see the colours and just thought the sparkle meant it would give me extra EXP or something. Swiftly defeated it. Gutted when I found out.
Next one was a golden Geodude in Alpha Sapphire. I don’t even like Geodude but I like this one.
Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair for me. Picked it up in a recent sale and really enjoying it so far. It’s early days but I think I prefer it to DKTF as it feels a bit lighter to control.
I say it every week but Stardew Valley. I’m not playing games so much at the moment so chipping away at Stardew is taking a while. Almost got the last obelisk!
@Perryg92 I noticed it too. I’ve not played the series but judging by these comments they’re held highly so I’d like to think the developer is good enough to optimise it well.
Aside from performance the art style looked really nice and I quite like an auto runner so I’ll be keeping an eye on it.
There’s a Stardew Valley Battle Royale mod on PC already. Since combat is already in the game it functions more similar to Fortnite than a “99” game. I believe you start at a random place in the town, find weapons and a circle gradually pushes you all together.
Edit: Also, a Steamworld Dig battle royale is my pick. The aim is to dig down constantly and the area beneath you is constantly generating. The further you go the better gems you collect. Every enemy you kill sends it to someone else (hence the automatically generating levels, that enemy will appear in their level beneath them like it was naturally there). Every gem automatically gives you money which you use to restore health or upgrade your tools on the fly (eg faster pickaxe/drill)
I’m like a broken record with these: Stardew Valley. I’m partway through tackling one of the challenges added in the latest update (the mining challenge). It’s hard!
NOTHING! Just finished Bravely Default 2 and I’m ready to not play games for a while now. It wasn’t the worst game but that grind did me in. I was level 50 for the final boss so I wouldn’t say I went overboard but it was still too much for me these days.
Bravely Default 2. I’m a bit bored but want to finish it as if I put it down I’ll forget what I was doing and never pick it up again. Partway through Chapter 3. It’s surprised me how dark it can get!
Mainly Bravely Default 2, I’m really liking it so far, it scratches an itch that few games can do well. Also I’ll fit in a little Stardew Valley I’m sure.
Stardew is by far my most played game on Switch, I absolutely love the game. Still going through the 1.5 update, kind of amazing how much stuff ConcernedApe added in as a free update.

Pokemon Legends Arceus, I finally picked up the game this week and it's great! Not really the best in any aspect but it all works together well.
