As part of Nintendo's E3 Direct presentation, it was revealed that Spyro Reignited Trilogy is indeed coming to Nintendo Switch.
This one has had a particularly confusing history; Switch rumours started to appear way back in February 2018, and then the game appeared on Nintendo's official site the following April. Strangely, the listing was eventually taken down, and the game released without a Switch version in sight.
Since then, we've heard nothing surrounding an official release. Until today, that is, where the game was shown for a matter of seconds in the Nintendo Direct. The game features remakes of the first three Spyro games - Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! and Spyro: Year of the Dragon - and will be arriving on Switch on 3rd September.
Our chums over at Push Square gave the PS4 version of the game a very solid 8/10 last year. Here's a quick snippet of what they had to say:
Spyro: Reignited Trilogy is another cracking remake from Activision. The purple dragon's original trio of adventures holds up brilliantly, with beautiful, colourful visuals and meticulously rebuilt levels. The controls are faithful to a fault; Spyro turns on a dime, but camera issues can frustrate occasionally, and loading times are perhaps a little too long. Overall, however, this is a remake Spyro fans can be proud of, and a threesome of old-school 3D platformers that a new generation of players will come to love.

All my waiting paid off!
It was worth waiting for it then.
Very neat. Hopefully it'll run well and not look to blurry. I bought it digitally on the PS4 a while back but might double dip for a physical Switch copy once it drops in price. Definitely recommend the game to fans of old-school 3D-platformers and collect-a-thons.
Great news!! I will get this providing its a good port. Interested to see how many of the 3 games are on the cart.....
This one is a no brainer for me. The only thing that'll put me off is a performance similar to Assassin's Creed 3. Otherwise, I'm just waiting for release day
I am honestly kinda dizzy from this E3. Nintendo just knocked it out of the park.
This is great news!
I'm going to get it on PC (store page is already up on Steam)
I'll be getting the Switch version as a later date for that on-the-go goodness
I'm worried the switch version we'll have to download the other 2 games though :-
Haha so glad I waited. Never played Spyro before.
Only the first game was on the disc for the ps4 release. Not too optimistic about the switch cart having more than one game on it.
Can't wait to get this on Switch
Yes! I'm gonna have to buy this a second time. Best 3D platformers ever made
@rdm22 : I agree. My brain is on fire after the Direct and the treehouse presentations are rocking right now.
I freakin' SCREAMED when they showed off the two seconds of footage. <3
Awesome news!
Loved the old Spyros. Buying this day one!
The reason it took so long, is because it came to Nintendo
@Rafke I too also want all 3 games on the cart
I've been doing well not needing an SD card for my Switch so far but I feel like my luck in that regard is going to end at one point or another
Not getting my hopes up though, it seems more likely we'll have to download spyro 2 and 3
Also Spyro has been confirmed for crash team racing as a future content update!
It's going to be just 1 game on card. If they did that with disc versions they're going to do the same here. Otherwise I'd buy it.
I've wanted to play these since I was a kid and never have; I didn't own a PlayStation.
If one had to pick between this and Crash, which is better?
I don't know how this was my favorite announcement at the Direct, but here we are
@Tyranexx Definitely spyro. I love both though
Nintendo won e3.
Nintendo is for the gamers.
It’s about the games, you to play them and how good they play.
The others are for the graphics and FPS crew.
Now the question is - Will it all be on cartridge
Awesome, now let's hope the best for a physical release.
Can't wait to play it! But I'll guess I will get it on PC 🤔
My switch is running out of space
I loved the GBA games, but never played these, as far as I can tell. Was waiting for this to be announced, but yeah, took them long enough. Glad I waited, though.
At least you guys should get subtitles out of the gate.
I love the Spyro games, but I may wait for a sale or price drop. I bought Crash Trilogy at full price and not too much later you saw price drops and sales.
If they put all 3 on the cart I'll buy, otherwise I'll stick with the digital trilogy I bought for peanuts on Vita.
My wife is definitely going to be interested
Spyro was lame when he was competing with Mario 64 and he's lame now.
Got my 3 platinums on PS4 and will GLADLY do it all over again 😁 just like with the Crash Trilogy!
@Tyranexx Spyro gives you more freedom to explore and collect different things. I've recently finished Spyro 2 and it was amazing, the areas you explore and beautifully done and there's side quests to complete too. Crash is a more challenging platformer where you're generally on a set path with the odd divide here and there.
I'd definitely say Spyro is the better game but it depends what your preferences are.
When I saw Spyro in action on Switch it didn't look too good from the footage. Hope it looks better in the future, don't want Switch fans being disappointed.
Another win for the Jax.
Knew not to buy it on another platform. We’ve been through this song and dance so many times before. Never buy a game on another system unless you’re dang sure it can’t run on Switch. Because if it can, chances are it’s coming, be it now or later.
This was always happening. Great news. Glad I avoided it on other formats now.
@JaxonH
“Never buy a game on another system unless you’re dang sure it can’t run on Switch”
If Witcher 3 works on Switch, that becomes even harder to judge in the future!
I imagine it took so long, because spyros world requires a lot more downgrading than crash for it to work on the switch.
I loved Spyro on the PlayStation and have memories playing it with younger kids. My boys should enjoy this!
@Fazermint, @wazlon Interesting. Thanks for the feedback! I'd like to play both, just trying to decide which to start with.
Yay, dragons!

This was the biggest thing to come from the Direct for me. September is looking pretty packed!
I am very biased since the original was one of my first games. I obviously love the game but it was very easy for anyone who cares about the challenge. At least the first one (never owned the other ones)
@electrolite77
Fair point, though in truth I do think Witcher 3 will be more the exception than the rule. Even Digital Foundry convinced themselves it couldn't be done.
Still, it does show that even graphically demanding, current gen open world games that dont have extra framerate to negotiate performance with, can still make the switch
@JaxonH
It’s a good thing all round. But yeah you’re right, a working Witcher 3 might even represent the peak of what this Switch can do.
Maybe they ran into some kind of a hitch when porting it to the Switch and decided to keep it quiet and fix it, rather than releasing it broken and patching it later?
Yeah, I got it for the PS4, but this won't stop me from getting it for the Switch as well.
Heck, I have Skyrim on multiple consoles: Xbox 360, PC (both he Legendary and Special Editions), and now the Switch.
Honestly, the only thing I'm worried about is the download size for the other 2 games. If it's something small like 5GB then I'm fine with it, but if it's like 20GB then I'll pass.
@Heavyarms55 That could be it, but then again, it's Activision so not getting my hopes up.
@N64-ROX Hate to break the truth to you, but Mario 64 is a mess in its current state. Like, what's with that camera? And trying to move Mario is like trying to drive a tank. Honestly, I can't believe so many people have rose-tinted glasses when it comes to 64.
The squeal I left during the brief moment we saw Spyro and lack of memory from what came after says everything about my opinion on the matter.
@DeathByLasagna better buy it digitally as only spyro 1 is on the cartridge and the rest are downloaded through an update.
@TheAwesomeBowser
Mario 64 moves like driving a tank? I think you need to get your analog stick fixed!
Cool. I go on a cruise in mid-September. Maybe I'll take this along as the game to play when I'm in my cabin!
@JaxonH Honestly, at this point, dang sure it won't run on Switch isn't even a guarantee. I couldn't IMAGINE The Witcher 3 running on the hardware, but, alas...
I'm done. I'll pick up FF7R for PS4 and maybe the Cyberpunk game on PC, but otherwise, everything else is Switch or Bust at this point (unless it's an exclusive financed by first-party money, of course).
@N64-ROX I don't even have an N64 so I can't get my analog stick fixed if it doesn't exist. I played 64 on the Wii U VC (R.I.P.) and it controlled awfully; like SpongeBob trying to drive. Sorry I don't have the same opinion as you, but it's true.
@The_ghostmen I'm a sucker for physical copies so I think I'll still get the boxed copy. Wanted to get the PS4 copy physically but the digital copy was 25% cheaper at the time I wanted to play it. But it is lame that only the first game comes on the disc/cartridge.
