Re: Soapbox: Zelda II: The Adventure Of Link Taught Me The Value Of Perseverance

FunGuy

@glaemay Yknow how in Ocarina, you can do more damage by doing a leaping strike at an enemy?

Zelda II never tells you this, but a leaping strike (admittedly a bit more complex to execute than in Ocarina) actually knocks enemy shields down, and the hit counts.

It doesn’t make it a whole lot easier, but just know that Link is a bit chunkier than you think with his sword-arm, here.

Re: Soapbox: Ocarina Of Time's Deku Tree Dungeon Is Still My All-Time Top Gaming Moment

FunGuy

I was 4 years old in 1985, when Super Mario Bros. came out. A year or so later, I was introduced to it when my sisters asked my folks if we could rent a Nintendo from a local video rental place.

I am not kidding, the first time I got to the end of 1-4, heard that "CHRRRRR" sound effect and saw that orange undulating flame sprite traveling my way, every neuron in my brain fired at once.

I'll never forget the first time I got to Bowser.

  • Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
  • Final Fantasies III (Famicom), V, and VIII
  • Mega Mans 4, 5 and 6
  • Everything but the first album in a rock band's catalogue
  • Everything but the first film in a series of films
  • U2
  • Rock music in general
  • Action Movies
  • Poetry
  • Just generally being chill about things
  • The original US translation of any video game released before 2000, no exceptions

Add "The Water Temple" to the list of things Internet Groupthink loves to moan about being the worst things ever, I'm guessing because screaming about how angry something makes you gets more clicks than just saying "Eh, it was alright"

Re: How Well Do You Know Zelda: Ocarina Of Time?

12 out of 15...and I don't think I've played all the way through since oh... 2003?

It's kind of hard to forget Ocarina. It and Metal Gear Solid slammed the door wide open on 3-D open sandbox adventure gaming.

Re: Poll: Mario & Sonic Face Off On Switch This October - Whose Corner Are You In?

FunGuy

Mario has not spent the last 25 years or so going off in 15,432 different directions with its brand identity, therefore Mario wins

I'd love for Sonic to sweep this but I'm just being practical; Sonic fans have been through a lot with Sega. Mario has been mediocre at times but never outright horrific (Sonic '06 and Black Knight come to mind). Or put another way, nobody is hoping that this Mario game finally gets Mario back to being good.

Re: Poll: How Many Of You Have Actually Visited 'Minus World' In Super Mario Bros.?

FunGuy

Yep, for sure. It's boring as a dog butt once you do see it for the first time, but hearing about Minus World and thinking it's a prank being played on you by the person telling you about it, and then finding out that it's real, is a rite of passage for any Mario player.

There were so many rumors about games flying around the cafeteria tables back then, this sounds right up there with the best of them, but no, in fact, it is real.

Re: Random: Some Square Enix Staff Really Want A Final Fantasy VI Remake

FunGuy

Consider that when you make a game inside a 3 megabyte cartridge, you allot for space.

Now, when you have about 3 terabytes to fill...

How do you stretch it out? Will it still run on a modern console if you do that? How do you animate the monsters? How many more townspeople are you gonna need to fill the extra space? What will they say? Do you expand the story? What if it offends the longtime fans who wanted you to do a Remake in the first place?

Yeah, it's difficult.

Re: Sonic Origins Plus Physical Listing Says New Content Is "Downloadable Via Included Code"

FunGuy

It’s really not that surprising. The Golden Age of Video Gaming has long since passed away. I wanna say that it began to decline around the time the PS2 came out, and JRPG series began popping up out of nowhere chasing the FF7 trend.

Since then, things have gotten more and more cutthroat and less and less creative. They are farming money out of hardcore addicts and pulling the wool over the eyes of naive newcomers, almost exclusively, at this point.

I think this is crap, too, but I am not that bothered by it, because as someone who was there and stoked when Sonic 1 released, I have kind of moved on from hoping for anything good out of the gaming world these days.

It’s just gotten so horrible…I gave up at a certain point. Not sure why I continue reading news sites for it, even.

Re: Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Series Launches On Switch Later This Month

FunGuy

If you turn off all random encounters, your characters will not gain levels. And thus, when you get to a boss, you are in real danger of being fried.

Basically, these ports are now giving you the ability to LLG any of these 6 games without having to run from every random battle. If you’ve never tried a Low Level Challenge, it’s pretty ruthless. The games’ boss encounters are designed around you being at a certain expected level. If you’re under leveled, it can be …interesting, the kind of tactics you have to employ to win.

Re: Wait, Did Square Enix Just Tease A Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster?

FunGuy

@Half-ShellHero The PSP port (and all subsequent ports of it) suffer from slowdown issues on the spell animations (patched out) and bad sound effects (hard-coded in, would be nigh-impossible to fix with a simple user-made patch).

To really get a nice, shiny remaster which fixes these issues and includes the phenomenal script and animated cutscenes of WotL, would be a dream come true for me.

Re: Review: Metroid Prime Remastered - A Long-Awaited And Stunning Return Of A Legend

FunGuy

Nice to see Metroid getting some love. We have plenty of great Mario and Zelda games, but for a long time, Metroid was kind of dormant. After Other M's weird attempt at world-building derailed things a bit, I was worried the series might never see the light of day again.

But we truly seem to be in a Metrennaisance here...hopefully its recalcitrant goth younger brother, Castlevania, will follow suit soon.
