Re: Early Tech Analysis Suggests Paper Mario's Thousand-Year Door Remaster Might Run At 30FPS

BodkinDQ

...yeah this is a non issue for me. Not gonna miss out on a great game cos lower fps. I don't understand people's infatuation with that anyways. As long as things run smooth and I can tell character models just fine, what I care about is the gameplay more than anything else. TTYD is a bonafide classic and one of the best RPGs of all time, so I'm not gonna bounce out over something so superfluous.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (September 9th)

@JohnnyMind I'm glad I could draw attention to Banner of the Maid, cos it's legit my new favorite indie SRPG of all time now.

It's way higher quality than the vast majority of indie RPGs or SRPGs, cos I end up shelving most of them for being too low of quality. The Fire Emblem series and Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor series have both set the bar for what I want in SRPGs. I was looking around online and Banner of the Maid may as well have been a critical flop, meaning the game wasn't the success it deserved, but it's high quality gave it a nice cult following and I was reading some really high praises on it. Since I see you're still playing Engage and Advance Wars, this game will absolutely be up your alley. It's a hidden gem that I seriously can't sing enough high praises for.

Banner of the Maid

Holy moly, what a ludicrously fun game! An indie SRPG based in the French revolution. Definitely Fire Emblem influenced in all the best possible ways. I think I may have found my new favorite indie of all time, I'm actually getting mad that I have to go to work, cos I'd rather stay home and play Banner of the Maid!

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (August 26th)

BodkinDQ

@JohnnyMind Awesome! I'm glad you picked it up!

I remembered people saying they wanted to pick up God Wars the Complete Legend on sale before it delisted in the previous Nintendo Life thread, but that's been a couple of months ago. I saved the date, cos SRPGs (and traditional JRPGs) are my favorite kind of games to play. I was genuinely hoping I would help remind some people who wanted it before it delisted get it before it was too late. Made my day to know I actually helped someone!

God Wars the Complete Legend

This game is being delisted August 30th from eShop and is on sale for 90% off right now. I definitely recommend it as a pick up if you like SRPGs. It's similar to Final Fantasy Tactics and Fire Emblem with elements of Japanese god mythology and comic book esque scenes. It's fun and tactical, so get it before its gone.

Re: Ubisoft's Cancelled 'Immortals 2' Project Reportedly Took Inspiration From Elden Ring

BodkinDQ

Immortals Fenyx Rising is one of the 2 games I'm tackling on my backlog right now and I've gotta say, the game is fricken fantastic. Love all the knee slapping humor and occasional innuendo. Zeus has no filter and I love it. The exploration, gameplay, combat, and puzzles are all quite enjoyable, very easy to immerse yourself and lose track of time in this game. I'm quite sad the 2nd game got cancelled, cos this feels like the action adventure and puzzle vibe I was searching for...

Re: Feature: The Rise Of 'Scam Games' And 'Keyword Bingo' Firms Flooding Switch eShop

BodkinDQ

I've noticed the influx of cheap, obvious rip off games of late and it's tedious to have to scroll through all the crap to find the established IPs or even the indie games that actually try and are good. It's giving a bad name to indies, I mean games like Sea of Stars still looks promising and I did enjoy my time with Undertale and Celeste, but it makes you just start ignoring indies, cos you know most of it ain't worth a dime. Getting sick of seeing all these lazy hentai games getting released lately too...

Re: Brand New 3D South Park Game Announced For Switch

BodkinDQ

The Fractured But Whole had no business being as good as it is was. The game was bloody hilarious, but oddly enough, the SRPG combat was very finely tuned and had great elements of strategic gameplay. Game was a lot more fun that expected and I am a fan of the show, so I am mildy curious about "Snow Day".

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (July 22nd)

BodkinDQ

I have entered Bower's Castle after collecting the 7th Star Spirit in Paper Mario 64. Time for the final showdown!

My favorite teammates are Watt and Bombette. The former for the strategic roles of buffs, paralysis, and ignoring enemies defense. The latter because I enjoy blowing crap up!

Wish Paper Mario would go back to being like this or TTYD tbh.

Edit: credit roll. Just beat it.

Re: Poll: Which Dormant Nintendo Franchise Would You Most Like To See Return?

BodkinDQ

Also, with the latest game being in 2015, I sincerely hope the Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor spin off series isn't calling it quits yet.

My heart did a flutter kick when I heard the news of Persona 5 Tactica. Just my opinion, but Fire Emblem is king of SRPGs in my book, but the only games I found that could compete for that title was the Devil Survivor series. I'm ready for a 3rd game.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (July 8th)

BodkinDQ

As of last night I got to the last chapter of Fire Emblem (Blazing Sword) on the switch before I had to put it up, cos I had to get up early for work. I've already beat this game before, but I couldn't wait to jump back in!

I'm planning on playing Ni No Kuni Wrath of the White Witch. I beat it a few weeks ago, but now I wanna tackle the post game.

Edit: Just beat Fire Emblem Blazing Sword again. Time to dive back into WotWW and explore the wonders of magic with Oliver!

Re: Talking Point: What Makes A Good Sidequest, Anyway?

BodkinDQ

@Lightsiyd You're in for a treat of a game my friend.

Ni No Kuni WotWW really, really makes side quests worthwhile, cos you get a ludicrous amount of rewards and the stamp card really opens up the more you spend your completed stamp bonuses on it, which gives the best rewards...

...also adding more fuel to the fire, it enriches the story more too. But I do side quests only if the rewards are worthwhile and if I enjoy it, which I did both immensely.

Enjoy!

Re: Talking Point: What Makes A Good Sidequest, Anyway?

BodkinDQ

For me side quests are only worth it if they have great rewards behind them, like some OP weapons, armor, etc.

For me personally, Nino Kuni Wrath of the White Witch rewards system for side quests was the best I've seen to date: great rewards like top tier weapons and/or armor as well as other rewards like guilders and items, had super bosses, (sweet exp) and last but most certainly not least, a stamp card that gets filled out upon completing side quests. The rewards from it were game changing: getting more experience per enemy killed, to getting more healing glims per battle/and coming to you automatically at the end of battle, to being able to ambush enemies easier, to Oliver bolstering his HP and MP both by 100. That's just some of the amazing rewards it gives.

TL;DR it's all about the rewards to justify my time. Otherwise super bosses are the only other thing I find worth my time for that sweet exp and enjoyment of it.

Re: Poll: What's Your Game Of The Year Of 2023 So Far?

BodkinDQ

Fire Emblem Engage

That game totally revamped my love of my favorite video game series. After breaking totally free of my gacha addiction, of which Fire Emblem Heroes was my favorite of the 3 I played, and FE Three Houses focusing too much on life simulation for my personal tastes, I had started to become wary of the series I held so dear to my heart. Played Engage and it reminded me why I love this epic series so much. The combat and gameplay loop just astounded me, it's my favorite combat system and gameplay loop of any game. It remained traditional in bringing back the weapon triangle and pristine tactical SRPG combat, but was innovative with the emblem ring/bracelet implementation, as that added so much more depth and complexity to the battlefield be that for your side or the enemies side. The graphics are pretty and the best of FE thus far, the battle animations were as tight as the GBA era, and the story didn't do a multiple path thing to make things overly convoluted, which was great in its simplicity. Loved Yunaka and Veyle as absolute character stand outs. Sommie cute AF!~ Anywho, I feel FE Engage is the absolute pinnacle of SRPGs for me. I genuinely can't wait for the next FE game.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of Today's Nintendo Direct?

BodkinDQ

November and December hitting my pocket book with sweet RPGs: gotta have Super Mario RPG, (again) Persona 5 Tactica, and Dragon Quest Monsters: the Dark Prince. Also want Super Mario Wonder. 2023 proving to be a worthy successor to 2022 in the Switch compendium of great games released.

Re: Video: Super Mario RPG Side-By-Side Graphics Comparison (Switch & SNES)

BodkinDQ

I immediately thought it looked faithful to the original, but with modern graphics just from the trailer alone.

I loved the original game and will absolutely be buying and playing the remake too. This was part of the golden age of RPGs and really proved that the Mario franchise as dynamic and malleable, in that in could do multiple genres and do it well. Let's a go~

Re: Soapbox: Pokémon Desperately Needs A Rival, But Who's Big Enough To Take It On?

BodkinDQ

Shin Megami Tensei always scratched the itch that Pokemon couldn't, especially with the difficulty and mature story and themes. It never replaced Pokemon though, Pokemon just has that special X factor that's hard to explain. Simple on surface and complex underneath comes to mind when it comes to battle mechanics in Pokemon...

... even as a big Pokemon fan myself, I felt very disappointed S/V with all it's several awful glitches and awful tera raids ATB +lag. Legends Arceus was such a fricken blast, the absolute best thing since the good ol days of Pokemon for me, but they knocked it out of the park only to whiff immediately after.

Re: Soapbox: If Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Isn’t Switch’s Swan Song, It Really Should Be

BodkinDQ

Video game quality>>>frame rates graphics

To me TotK showcases that the switch is still releasing phenomenal, legendary games and still has fuel to the fire. I hope the switch continues making great games for years to come...

... People always think they gotta get the next upgrades in frame rates and graphics. It's like the gotta have the current latest gen iPhone disease so many (addicted) people have. I can clearly tell locations and characters designs just fine. I'd rather have a machine that continually releases amazing games like the switch does than some new piece of hardware that looks pretty, but sacrifices quality. Long live the switch.

Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn

It's the only NA Fire Emblem release that I haven't beat yet, cos when I bought it I was knee deep in Fire Emblem Heroes gacha addiction, which I am gacha addiction free for 2 years now thank God. Catching up that backlog! I'm probably one of the only people not playing TotK right now, but I've got the same hype for Radiant Dawn as most people do for it. This game has aged incredibly well! Pretty game and a lot of fun right from the get go. Liking the immediate difficulty and the combat is glorious as always.
