Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (November 18th)

@JohnnyMind Happily added you to my friends list.

My buddies and I had a blast playing Engage, Smash, and one round of Super Mario Party. Felt like a nice unique mix of games. We chatted, ate pizza, and had a nice time. Hope in the future more RPGs do similar things to Engage or Sword/Shield so people can play RPGs together. Hope you had a blast with your friends as well. Catch ya later.

@JohnnyMind As always, impressed you can play so many games at once. I try to limit it to 1 at a time, sometimes 2 if I get easily led by my nose.

Speaking of friends, I have a few coming over today and we're probably all going to play Engage, Smash, and maybe Mario Party or Wonder depending on how long we play the first 2 games. Might seem a bit out of the blue, but I'd love to add you to my switch friends list. Here's my code: SW-6386-1793-1018.

@fire_emblem_girl

I've been playing this series for over a decade, played and beat all NA FE releases, some multiple times even. Sacred Stones is easier than most of the series and would genuinely be a contender for best entry point into Fire Emblem if it wasn't for the fact that it and other older FE games pre Awakening are hard to come by. Has all the trademark mechanics of the series, whilst still having its own identity. Even had Tower of Valni and Lagdou Ruins, which was essentially free dlc grinding at the time that nowadays would unfortunately greedily monetize in a heart beat. Really fun game. Fingers crossed you get to experience it for the first time and me for like the 1000th, haha!

I'm sure you've played Engage and Three Houses. I prefer Engage,(God tier SRPG IMHO) as it's closer to classic FE style and shines with gloriously polished combat and gameplay, whereas 3H was a little Persona lite for my personal tastes, still a good game though. If you've played and enjoyed those games, I suggest Banner of the Maid to add to your switch. Fantastic indie SRPG that wears it's Fire Emblem influence on its sleeves. Great art style and head scratching good combat.

I beat Super Mario Wonder this week on my own, but am doing a 2 player run with my wife and plan on doing a file with my best friend when he comes out. I haven't felt this strongly about a platformer since Super Mario World. I've played and beaten a lot don't get me wrong, but Wonder is pure magic that makes me realize why gaming is such a passionate past time for me. Just a beautiful, extremely fun game I can see myself playing for years to come.

Am currently playing Justice Chronicles. I got lured in by the banging anime intro, but mostly by the character art being as it has characters that look like Ike, Tiki, and Colm from the Fire Emblem series. The one that looks like Ike is named Kline, which is the name of another FE character ironically. Fire Emblem is my favorite series, so that's one way to get my attention, haha. Game is fun and I like it, not life changing or anything, but got it for free so ain't gonna complain.

Re: Round Table: Let's Talk Mario Wonder - Surprises, Badges, Difficulty, New Characters

BodkinDQ

Exploring world 6 right now and my only real complaint is life getting in the way of this game!

I like the special world for actually being a challenge. The rest of the game is absolutely 10/10 fun, but I'm glad at least for those seeking a challenge this game does have that. I really like the badge implementation, kinda makes me think of Paper Mario with Zelda execution for the abilities. Hope that feature makes a return in following Mario games. This game is so gorgeous too. Wouldn't have thought a back to form Mario game would be this darn pretty.

Oh, and Yellow Toad best Toad. Tis savage Toad. (Inside joke with my friends)

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Super Mario Bros. Wonder?

BodkinDQ

I think this is legitimately the first 10/10 platformer for me since Super Mario World. Wonder has put that stupid smile on my face that I had when playing All-Stars and World growing up. The platforming action is extremely enjoyable and well polished, even putting in some nice challenges for old vets like myself. I love the unorthodox effects of the Wonder seeds as well, which made way for some interesting innovations. The power ups in this game are a blast as well. Didn't know I was gonna enjoy being an elephant, but here I am!

I'd say the closest in recent years for platforming games I've played that are 9/10 on the border of being 10/10 for me were Super Mario Odyssey and Celeste. I can't decide if they're 10/10 or not, but Wonder there is no doubt it gets a perfect score in my book.

Re: Review: Infinity Strash: Dragon Quest The Adventure Of Dai - A Dismal Adaptation Of An Excellent Anime

BodkinDQ

@Ryu_Niiyama I know you said you already looked it up, but I'm a man of my word. I just beat the game. Was an overall pleasant experience. I actually got tired of grinding in temple of recollection cos getting memories is randomized... Anywho, game ends where you fight MystVearn and the Colossus. That was a REALLY fun endgame. Story ended abruptly, but man that last battle was fun, I felt I really accomplished something cos I managed to beat the final battle without dying. (At one point I had 34 hp!!!)

Definitely worth the pick up on sale. I stand by 7/10 for it.

Re: Best Nintendo Switch Strategy Games

BodkinDQ

Fire Emblem Engage is a God tier SRPG for that ludicrously enjoyable and refined combat, which is what a good SRPG should be about in my mind. The strategic combat is aces, the maps are finely tuned, and the unorthodox emblem ring/bracelet implementation, which offered innovative combat possibilities that ended up being better than I initially thought it would be. Beautiful art and OST and a few character stand outs are just the cherry on top of a delicious gameplay sundae. As a SRPG fanatic, it's become my favorite of all time.

I feel that Banner of the Maid should absolutely be added to this list. This was a surprise SRPG indie for me, cos being based on the French revolution is an odd, but fun choice that worked. Its one of the only indies that actually really took time to refine it's combat and was a genuine blast to play, which was like a left hook out of nowhere, cos most indies haven't captivated me the way it did. The character art portraits are beautiful and stunning. The game clearly had a lot of love put into it. If I can be candid, BotM needs more awareness.

Re: Review: Infinity Strash: Dragon Quest The Adventure Of Dai - A Dismal Adaptation Of An Excellent Anime

BodkinDQ

So far the game has ran smooth without bugs and/or slowing down. I only had one moment where it did, but that was because I had left the game on my switch menu for a long time so I could get a bite to eat and the issue solved itself.

Have a concert I'm going to today, probably be tomorrow before I get to play much. Almost to chapter 5 and I think I read somewhere the game has 7 chapters. What I've played I've enjoyed thus far.

Re: Review: Infinity Strash: Dragon Quest The Adventure Of Dai - A Dismal Adaptation Of An Excellent Anime

BodkinDQ

@Spinal Yeah, temple of recollection has been fun. It's fun collecting bond memories and upgrading spells and said bond memories. I could probably be closer to endgame if it wasn't for the fact I keep grinding there, haha. As for your comment, I can see that. The anime parts border on visual novel and just like you I prefer to play rather than watch, but I still have enjoyed the story nonetheless. Just have to know what you're getting into though, so I've been judging it based on what it is (genre) and not my expectations if that makes any sense.

Re: Review: Infinity Strash: Dragon Quest The Adventure Of Dai - A Dismal Adaptation Of An Excellent Anime

BodkinDQ

@Ryu_Niiyama Absolutely! I'll remember this thread and @ you when I'm done. I'm about 9-10 hrs in the game right now and I'm getting the idea I'm over halfway.

Agreed. Reviewers need to be objective, cos even if a genre isn't your cup of tea, you still need to consider where a game fits into the confines of its genre. It may be a few days, cos of work/life balance, but I'll let ya know where it ends.

Re: Review: Infinity Strash: Dragon Quest The Adventure Of Dai - A Dismal Adaptation Of An Excellent Anime

BodkinDQ

@Ryu_Niiyama Yeah, I figured I'd better give my two cents to not only try to explain what kind of game people are getting into, but 4/10 stars seems a little harsh to me. It's fun, but it's an unorthodox game with manga focus and lite action RPG combat. I'm not quite to the end yet, but I'm enjoying it and planning on finishing it. I'm the kind of guy that will just stop playing a game if I don't like it, cos there's too many games to enjoy before I die. I'm not putting this one down, so it's enjoyable enough to finish.

Re: Review: Infinity Strash: Dragon Quest The Adventure Of Dai - A Dismal Adaptation Of An Excellent Anime

BodkinDQ

I'm playing it right now and I'd give it a 7/10. It's not life changing, it's not as good as the bonafide classic DQ games we've come to love like DQ V, VIII, or XI nor is it as good as the Monster spin off games. (The demo of the newest entry is available and it has given me high expectations, as that was very enjoyable) It is however, very manga/anime filled (so think of it closer to a visual novel, great for those who wanted English dub) and has simple and enjoyable action RPG combat. It's not as strategic as the mainline series, but it is nice to play a simple game every now and then, cos if you're anything like me, I play SRPGs and ludicrously long JRPGS, which while the latter is fun, time investment can be a wear and tear and isn't conducive to family life. This game scratches that action RPG itch, but is considerate of your time being as the game can be beaten within 12-30 hrs, depending on core game focus or going for extras.

If you're a die hard Dragon Quest fan or watched the anime, then I suggest this game as it is fun for what it is. If you're a newcomer, start with Dragon Quest XI or V, cos those games are some of the best this series has to offer.

Re: 3DS And Wii U Online Play Ends In "Early April" 2024

BodkinDQ

Nintendo honestly makes the best games and put the goofiest of smiles on my face, but unfortunately they're completely apathetic to game preservation. I hate the concept of modding, but I won't frown upon it in this circumstance. A lot of my fav games heavily used online play, so I cannot defend this.

Re: Soapbox: What Do You Do When Nintendo Ticks Off Your ENTIRE Most-Wanted List?

BodkinDQ

I'd like Fire Emblem the Sacred Stones to come to the switch GBA online and for Fire Emblem the Binding Blade to get an official translation or get it's remake before the switch's life span is up. Intelligent Systems did say they wanted to remake BB, so it's just a hurry up and wait situation.

Like I really need to beat Sacred Stones for the thousandth time, but I wanna give my GBA copy a rest. As for BB, that's been my biggest request for years. People need to know why Roy is our boy!

I'm not super hard to please nor do I have a lot of requests. Keep it simple~

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (September 30th)

BodkinDQ

@Grail_Quest Super Mario Odyssey absolutely deserved all the hype it got! I really enjoyed the platforming, using the hat as a weapon and/or mind control, the exploration, and man, those graphics are beautiful! (Something I never thought I'd say about a Mario game)

If I can be candid, I got the game not long after it game out, but it got shelved cos of a debilitating gacha addiction I had at the time. I've been gacha free for almost 3 years now and I started tackling that unchecked backlog. This was one of those games I sadly missed out on at that time, BUT thankfully I went back and played it again without shelving it. It was a special game that had me smiling a goofy grin when I beat it--- final area and game itself was just that good. So glad you got to enjoy that piece of magic with me!

Re: 3DS Turn-Based JRPG 'The Legend Of Legacy' Is Getting Remastered Next Year

BodkinDQ

@SwitchVogel

Thanks! It's weird how I had heard the of Trinity Trigger, but didn't know it was also made by FuRyu even though that art style is a dead giveaway. Looks like instead of it being a spiritual successor to LoL and AA with traditional turn based JRPG leanings, it went action RPG based, very Mana esque. Still seems like something I may like, will have to consider getting it eventually.

Thanks for the heads up about it!
