Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (22nd June)

I just recently beat Redemption Reapers for a second time, this time on hard+ mode. Game is definitely going down as an all time classic for me. I've been gushing with praises a lot on here for the game, so I'm going to chill a minute on that, but man what a fun gem of a game.

Kinda on the ropes on what to play next tbh.

Recently beat Paper Mario TTYD and loved it.

I'm actually replaying Redemption Reapers on new game+ hard mode. It's great cos literally everything carries over, but the enemies lvl still scales to yours and has slight hard mode stat inflation. The game is certainly special to me, cos rarely do I do 2nd playthroughs in anything that isn't named Fire Emblem or old school Pokemon games. RR is going down as an all time fav.

As for mobile gaming, in the downtime in town, work, etc I've uh, decided to go play some fan made games, most notably Fire Emblem the Last Promise. I can really feel the love that went into the game. Has that classic and fun gameplay/combat that I can't deny I've missed from the GBA era a bit and liking generally everything about it so far. The story is a bit Shadow the Edgeh- lord, but that just makes me nostalgic for my childhood when everything was like that lol!

Happy weekend gaming everyone!

@Azura Being as you like Fire Emblem, Redemption Reapers is made by the same team that made Fire Emblem Path of Radiance and is essentially a dark fantasy Fire Emblem in all but name with very similar gameplay mechanics i.e. vantage, canto, chain attacks similar to Engage, grid based combat with PP and EP, Bexp, etc, etc. Also had a lot of notable FE voice actors/actresses and OST made by FE composer. It's a lot of fun highly recommend!

Redemption Reapers is an absolutely underrated gem of a game that I've yet to see in any physical store other than eShop. Super tight, strategic combat, beautiful animations, grim dark graphics, and a game with collective trauma that had me pulling for the characters and lamenting the end. This is a game that needs to be reevaluated on Nintendolife for review, cos the game is so much fun and deserves more accolades than what it got in the review. Prolly an objective 9/10, but I'd personally give it 10/10 cos it's rare that I binge play a game til its finished like I did with RR- it's that good.

We had a tornado go through our area this week, so it took out our electric and trees all around us. Thank God me and my family are safe and the house is still standing. We just recently got power back late the other night.

So while I'd probably already be done or getting close, I'm still playing TTYD. Enjoying every second of the game too!

Re: Soapbox: The Erdrick Trilogy Is The Right 'Dragon Quest' For The HD-2D Treatment

BodkinDQ

XI connects to the original Erdrick trilogy, so definitely makes sense. Honestly the first 2 games are good, but III (Seeds of Salvation) was where Dragon Quest first hit it's stride. This is the game almost all JRPGs are indebted to, as the game was was not only very finely polished and was just a pure joy to play, but became such a massive influence to JRPGs and video games as a whole. The game in particular is something of a zeitgeist in Japan.

I'd be happy with just III, but the first 2 games are a welcome addition.

@WhyYouLie You know, I've played some very adult feeling games with dark/mature themes and M rated content and then somehow be rated T. On the other hand I've played some M rated games that really just come across as being made by an edgy 12 old who just discovered cuss words and got the hehe haha's for nudity.

M rated essentially means nothing. Quality of the game is what matters.

Re: Soapbox: Fire Emblem’s Future May Not Be In Turn-Based Combat

BodkinDQ

@UltimateOtaku91 That's genuinely worth noting. Engage has absolutely sold more since then. I think the article was just primed to bait the exhausted 3H vs Engage argument. All of the games are great in this series, so I quicky tire of the argument for arguments sake. Just as long as FE doesn't go full on Sims then the future is bright for the series regardless.

Re: Soapbox: Fire Emblem’s Future May Not Be In Turn-Based Combat

BodkinDQ

Fire Emblem is my favorite video game series of all time, been playing since the GBA era. I will say this: I love every game in the series, but 3H was the lowest point for me, cos I do not like downtime (monastery segments) in games. Support conversations are fine, but straight up social sim just isn't my cup of tea. I was debating on quitting playing future installments of the series if FE decided to continue making social sim a focal point like 3H. I play FE for that glorious SRPG combat more than anything. Thankfully FE has shot back to its original premise for now, but I guess we'll see what the future holds.

Dropping the tactical combat would be cataclysmic for the series and I sure as hell wouldn't be interested. Social sim shouldn't be the focal point, leave that to Persona.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (18th May)

BodkinDQ

@Zaruboggan Redemption Reapers gameplay is absolutely the focal point of the game, as most SRPGs tend to be. I will say, the game is intentionally vague, cos there is some collective trauma shared between all 5 of your characters that the game hints towards and by the last few chapters all is explained and gives depth. You do have a screen where you can read up on characters backstories and read up on collected spoils of war to give story to the world around you.

It was made by some of the people who made Fire Emblem Path of Radiance. Has VA's from recent FE games and definitely has similar battle mechanics to FE.

The game is so much fun, it's worth it for the combat/gameplay alone. The animations are awesome too and love the whole gloomy atmosphere to it. If you're into games solely for story, then it probably won't be for you, but it's made that way intentionally. I personally loved it.

Man, I'm still on a high after recently beating Redemption Reapers. Game was ludicrously fun, so much so I'm debating on that new game+. It was a very unorthodox SRPG, but man that combat was fun. Definitely made you think. Graphics, animations, and depressive vibes were all up my alley too. Heavy recommend to fans of the genre cos it's a gem of a game.

As for now I've just been fooling around with Balatro. I've "beaten" the game with different hands, but it's always fun to try a different run with a different deck.

Will be playing games with my friends, so probably Smash, Mario Party, Demon Slayer Sweep the Board, and Stick Fight. Always a good time!

@ThatZeldaNerd Thanks for the kind words!

Not many people I'd do much for, but my wife and my best friend are both special people who I would do anything for. Also got the Super Mario Holiday ornament for my wife since she collects those. Have a few thousand points saved up, may as well spend em on the few people I give a toss about right?

Have a good one!
