Re: Talking Point: Which Games Were Just The Perfect Length?

BodkinDQ

One of the (many) big reasons I love the Fire Emblem franchise is they're the perfect length usually approximantly 30-40 hrs with my play style. Having my favorite gameplay of any series and being the perfect game length I'm more likely to do multiple playthroughs.

Persona games are another franchise I love, but I get burn out really bad micromanaging social links and having 100+hrs of an otherwise great game. Gameplay is fantastic, but the mind starts to drift well before finishing cos of all the downtime fluff.

I am playing Redemption Reapers and this game is an absolute gem. I fricken love it!

I don't know how this game went under my radar initially other than mixed reviews may have hurt it from being talked about, but I stumbled upon it and I'm having the time of my life. It's like a dark walking dead/souls esque game with SRPG combat much more liken to Fire Emblem instead of the usual Final Fantasy Tactics. The animations are so cool and the graphics dark and pretty. The best part is the gameplay. The combat is definitely well thought out. The difficulty is somewhat hard, (but not impossible or unfair) so it requires you to make excellent strategic use of skills unique to characters and their assets, positioning, and being resourceful. This game deserved way higher rating than poor-mid. I definitely get the impression these were people who don't expect games like this to be SRPG and would rather button mash. This game is a genuinely great game that I wholeheartedly suggest to anybody who is a fan of SRPGs, especially Fire Emblem, cos the game certainly took a lot of skills and game attributes from it. I'd say it's an objective 8-9 outta ten, but based on how much fun I'm having for me 10/10.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (4th May)

@imadeanaccount The story absolutely gets better. At first I was admittedly disappointed at the story to P5T too. Well I was wrong, cos it just has a slow start. After the early games parts are out of the way, the story really starts to hit it's stride and refuses to let up on the gas. The new characters Erina and Toshiro(I initially loathed him) really end up being interesting characters with huge character development and the phantom thieves themselves really feel like the same as ever with their charming quirkiness. Definitely ended up being a game that hits you in the feels. Keep playing, cos I ended up loving the story.

Recently beat Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker. Game was an absolute blast and was the last game of my focal backlog. I did both arcs and the first was a strategy king and going into the 2nd arc with NG+ perks I just rekt everything. Very fun strategic battles in general and the improved crack system was a nice QoL change.

My side backlog still has some games, but these games I either just wanna try out to see if I like or games I have to be in really specific moods for. My focal backlog is games I feel imperative to play and beat cos I know I'll really like them. Having just recently finished my backlog, it's a very fulfilling sense of accomplishment. Once TTYD comes out that's what I'll be playing and adding to my focal backlog quite willingly again for it.

Re: Poll: Are You Bothered By The Frame Rate For Paper Mario: TTYD On Switch?

BodkinDQ

@Dang_69 Ah, thanks for the clarification. Hadn't contemplated motion sickness myself. Guess I've just become apathetic over FPS and graphics over the years. I'm sure I would notice if I decided to really look, but it was never something I cared enough about to be bothered with unless it effected the permormance of course.

While I do appreciate say, good graphics and decent FPS, I came to the realization that games generally keep improving with those over time. That stuff will unfortunately date quick given the haste of modern tech growth, but man, good games (gameplay) or good stories stick with you for a life time, so that's where my mindset comes from.

Re: Poll: Are You Bothered By The Frame Rate For Paper Mario: TTYD On Switch?

BodkinDQ

@ikki5 From what I've read from review(s), none of the action based commands have suffered from being 30 FPS. Playing devil's advocate, I don't play on an expensive TV like everyone else seems to, so I don't get to see the FPS differences to the extent maybe others do. I'm sure that makes a difference to some people who are better off than me.

Putting that to the side, I still stand by my reasoning. It's not a game that should require super high FPS, cos being turn based and cartoon paper shouldn't suffer from it. Again, I read that even the action based commands were smooth. Guess it's one of those we'll see when the game comes out.

Re: Soapbox: During A Mental Health Crisis, It Wasn't Cosy Games That Helped

BodkinDQ

SRPGs and traditional turn based JRPGs (both my favorite gaming genres) have helped me during a lot of mental health crisis moments. Something cathartic about knowing I'm in control, can take as much or as little time as I want, and I'm pretty successful at it unlike ya know, life! Haha. Plus, I genuinely enjoy them. I like using my brain for strategy and I'd rather use said brain for something stimulating rather than wallow in the misery in my head.

Re: Poll: Are You Bothered By The Frame Rate For Paper Mario: TTYD On Switch?

BodkinDQ

Caring about frame rates is silly to me in a game with cartoon paper characters and (slow action command) turn based combat. As long as the game runs smooth and by all accounts it does, then I'm happy and especially after the glow up it got in the detail of the graphics.

FPS is such a silly thing to be so hung up on like some people are. I care more about the quality of the game like gameplay, story, or world building. Constantly wanting higher FPS is like thinking you've gotta have the latest phone and all it's latest tech, when in all honesty it's superfluous and I've seen it feed into major spending addictions for it. They're both gonna constantly generally improve over time, but decades from now after the FPS for all games this gen are outta date, what you're gonna remember is the game itself. As long as the game runs smooth that's all that matters.

Plus, it's the fricken TTYD. Hype!

Re: Hands On: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Unfolds Gloriously On Switch

BodkinDQ

@Synthatron_Prime What you said is fair when it comes to performance issues. I'm just saying it doesn't have to be high quality or best of the best FPS as long as the game runs smoothly and looks decent enough. I mean, it's a game with cartoonish paper characters, so wanting high class over this seems silly to me. Not every game needs it, people have become pampered/entitled about FPS and graphics in my opinion. As long as I can see things clearly that's all I need. The point you said I agree with is if it affects performance issues, of which I'd have a problem with that too...

...and yay I got congratulated~

Re: Hands On: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Unfolds Gloriously On Switch

BodkinDQ

I've always thought caring about FPS was pretentious and silly... It's like the disease where people think they need to throw hundreds-thousands of dollars every time a new shiny phone comes out with all the latest tech upgrades. Just like phones, gaming FPS and frame rates will generally keep improving over time. As long as I can clearly see what I'm looking at and it runs smoothly, I don't give a toss about that superfluous nonsense. I care about quality of the game itself like gameplay and/or story. Aside from FPS, seems like the visuals got nicer anyway. Not gonna miss out of a bonafide classic like TTYD just cos lower FPS.

Re: Most Stressful Nintendo Switch Games

Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne was my stressful little bundle of joy. The punishment really brought out the machochist in me. I enjoyed the torture and am a life time fan of punishmen- SMT.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (20th April)

BodkinDQ

Late to the party here, but I'm playing Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker. About break my jaw saying that whole title out loud, heh. Game is an absolutely great SRPG. It's like Persona meets Fire Emblem, so I'm definitely a fan. The first SMT DS is a classic for me, but some personal things went down and I never got around to the second one. Record Breaker is so fricken good, though. I genuinely wish Atlus would make a third DS game. We're long overdue~

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (13th April)

BodkinDQ

Shin Tensei Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker. I enjoyed the first game remake (SMT Devil Survivor Overclocked) so much, but due to my 3DS having a corrupt memory card that I bought used and my at the time gacha addiction, I never finished this amazing game. Overclocked remains one of my top ten favorite games to this day. With Record Breaker I'm already having a blast of nostalgia, strategy, and monster taming. The story so far doesn't seem quite as good as Overclocked, but everything else seems to be just as good. Magical game already.

Re: Soapbox: I Thought I'd Clear My Backlog In 2024, But The Switch Had Other Ideas

BodkinDQ

I'm honestly quite proud of myself. I have 2 backlog lists: 1 for focal points i.e. must plays/beat and 1 for wanna try out/have to be in particular mood for. As of this last week I beat the focal point of my switch backlog and the only must play I have left is on my 3DS with Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker being the absolute last of my focal points, which I plan to start today. I loved the first game so much, but never finished the 2nd one, so I wanna go back, cos the game was superb.

So thankfully my palette will be clean by the time TTYD comes out, which is definitely a must play. Feels good to finally have the backlog managed. It's been a fun wild ride and I look forward to just having a few games now and then pop up.

EDIT: Ugh, my 3DS didn't charge, so I guess I'll have to play it a different day...

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (6th April)

BodkinDQ

I beat Persona 4G about a week ago. Highly, highly recommend the game. I had so much fun playing it. Wonderful cast of characters, classic Megaten combat, addicting shuffle time, and thrilling story. I'll miss playing it.

Right now I'm playing Final Fantasy III pixel remaster. Enjoying the simplicity.

Re: Disgaea 7 Complete Is Coming To Switch In Japan

BodkinDQ

@Joeynator3000 I think the numbers were one of the things that excited me at first too, but it's loses it's charm after awhile. Yeah, the games are an absolute grind fest, which typically I love grinding in RPGs, but I feel like SRPGs shouldn't require it, but be totally optional. Strategy/tactics should be the focal point in my opinion.

Re: Disgaea 7 Complete Is Coming To Switch In Japan

BodkinDQ

@Joeynator3000 Respectable opinion and I'm of a similar mindset. I love SRPGs, cos I've always loved RPGs, but I especially love tactics and having to play strategically to earn my win, hence my particular love of Fire Emblem and Atlus spin-off SRPGs. Disgaea, while definitely being an SRPG, really doesn't require much thought to win in my experience. You can macro grind or whatever and it just becomes all about big numbers. Do ludicrous amounts of damage and utterly destroy. I still like the games, but they're nowhere near my favorite of the genre.

Re: Random: BAFTA's 'Iconic Game Characters' Poll Has Us Scratching Our Heads

BodkinDQ

This list will change in the next 10 years, if even that long. A lot of recency bias, but once the flame of those games die down a bit you'll still see the likes of Mario, Pikachu, Master Chief, Crash Bandicoot, Link, Sonic, Cloud, etc. An individual character still being heavily talked about a decade(s) later is proof of living beyond the honey moon phase and is the true definition of iconic.

Re: Best Final Fantasy Games, Ranked - Switch And Nintendo Systems

BodkinDQ

Can't say as I agree with this list... Dunno, localization of the number changes could be throwing me off too, but even then that top ten is still missing some pivotal entries. Should make games with multiple incarnations like FF VI all count as one entry and take the one with the highest score instead that way these lists have less clutter.

Re: Poll: So, Do You Prefer Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Or Tears Of The Kingdom?

BodkinDQ

I prefer more "linear" Zelda games myself. A Link to the Past and A Link Between Worlds were the ones that made the biggest, classic impact on me. OoT was special too. As for BotW and TotK, played BotW for quite a few hours, enjoyed it, but burned out and eventually shelved it. TotK looked like more of the same, but with Minecraft esque elements when I watched friends play it. Both games are beautiful and have a wonderful OST. Fun games deserving of the hype. Personally, I'm just feeling haggard of everything going fully open world and being 100+ hr grand adventures where you can get story out of order, cos you got your nose easily led too far one way and made the story confusing. They're good games that have my respect, but I prefer old school Zelda.

Re: Poll: What's The Best Final Fantasy Game? Rate Your Favourite Mainline & Spin-Offs

BodkinDQ

@OrtadragoonX I like Tidus for his character growth. He goes from being whiney, dramatic, and an absolute noob of a fighter to being quite mature at the end of the game and a conversation with Lulu reveals he has become perhaps the best guardian there ever was. He goes from being a snot nosed kid, to be completely understanding his plight and willingly sacrifice himself for everyone else's sake.

I feel like games need more characters like him, cos most games don't show character growth in quite the beautiful way FF X does and in particular with Tidus.

Re: Poll: What's The Best Final Fantasy Game? Rate Your Favourite Mainline & Spin-Offs

BodkinDQ

@Kiz3000 Amen! FF X was special to me with the innovative and extremely fun CTB combat, the graphics were far ahead of their time, and the first time FF ever got fully voice acted. Not to mention one my favorite, just gorgeous OST and a gut wrenchingly powerful story. Once the focal points of my backlog are finished I'd like to play and beat it for the like the millionth time all over again. Magical game.

Re: Talking Point: What's Your Perfect Sunday Morning Game?

BodkinDQ

SRPGs or traditional turn based RPGs. These are the focal point of what I play anyways, but I feel more relaxed playing, taking turns, and strategizing vs say playing button mashers or shooters. Gives me a cozy feeling to know that I can be in control of 99% of what happens and that I can take as little or as much time as I want. Ironically, I usually don't take long, but I do like having no time constraints just in case.
