Re: Japanese Charts: Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection Cleans Up

ATaco

I'm kind of curious how popular the PC scene has become in Japan. From what I can tell most are pretty content with just owning a switch and a PC for the most part. Sony's exclusives aren't really Japan oriented nowadays so they probably don't mind too much, especially if they can just play stuff like Resi 4 on their PCs.

Re: Video: Let's Discuss The Super Mario Bros. Movie

ATaco

@Cashews
I mean I can assume that since the person is a critic they HAVE to sit through the movie and would no doubt see it as a punishment if it's something they didn't enjoy. That's kind of just how critics think.

I don't think I'll get an unbiased opinion from people who frequent Nintendo websites though, we're all at least somewhat fans of the company and at least somewhat know about Mario. If I took my dad to see it (who knows nothing about Mario Bros besides the names) he wouldn't get the GameCube sound effect references or anything like that. I feel like that's kinda the point the critic was making, if you know the source material you're going to enjoy it. If you don't then it's going to be a kid's flick like watching Minions or something.

Re: Video: Let's Discuss The Super Mario Bros. Movie

ATaco

I liked one critic who summarized it thus: "The film is a reward for fans and a punishment for everyone else". It's a love letter to Mario and Nintendo fans but you're probably not going to find much to enjoy if you don't get any of the inside jokes.

Re: Feature: Atelier Ryza 3's Producer On Crafting The End And Shifting Away From Fanservice

ATaco

Of course NintendoLife has to be concerned about the fan service. Let's be honest, Ryza would be as niche as all the other atelier games that came before. Fan service still sells in this age, wether we care to admit it as a society or not. I say embrace it. Instead of being mad go play boyfriend dungeon or whatever that game was called. Fan service doesn't have to appeal to just men, it can be for everyone.

Re: Bowser Defends $70 Zelda Pricing, Nintendo Still "Very Bullish" About Switch

ATaco

@GoshJosh

I agree with everything you laid out. Modern consumers are so used to being abused nowadays that they just take it as "well this is just how it is." I don't like it. I guess it would explain why most of my time nowadays is either spent playing retro games and indies while buying any big games like a year or two out after they get major price drops. I just can't stand what gaming has become.

Re: Bowser Defends $70 Zelda Pricing, Nintendo Still "Very Bullish" About Switch

ATaco

Sony & Microsoft at least had the "excuse" that you were paying for a next-gen product. Nintendo is literally just charging more because they can. To be fair this crap is all thanks to Sony leading the charge and it's the reason why I don't buy games on release anymore. I may not be the majority because people just have no self control but I'll stick to the way I think it should be.

Re: Mario Movie Directors Explain Their Take On Princess Peach

ATaco

No offense but that just makes her more generic in this day and age. Every woman now kicks butt and has no physical weaknesses. Kind of hard to be excited when they all follow the same cookie cutter formula when it comes to designing characters so as to not offend anyone.

Re: Random: Shigeru Miyamoto Comments On What Nintendo Will Be Like Without Him

ATaco

I've watched a ton of developer diaries for various Nintendo games and the story usually was that Miyamoto often butted into development to try and shoehorn in some gimmicks that people were then forced to implement. The man seems to hate making sequels if there isn't some mandatory new angle. This is probably why we haven't seen a new Mario Kart and instead just more dlc. I respect all that he's done for the industry and gaming in general but I think it's finally time for the legend to step down.

Re: Talking Point: What Do You Name Link When You're Playing A Zelda Game?

ATaco

When I was younger I just used to use my name whenever I played games like this. Now I use a nickname/screen name that I like to call myself. I feel like Nintendo always intended Link to be you, that's why he tends to be a blank slate and almost robotic. The character is supposed to be filled with YOUR thoughts and emotions. If Link actually spoke and verbalized his thoughts it'd be a different thing but since he doesn't I just treat him as an extension of myself, my proxy into this fantasy world.

EDIT: Also, since I used to share games with my brother it was imperative that we both use different names so we don't actually play each other's saves.

Re: Metroid Prime Engineer "Let Down" By Exclusion Of Original Credits In Remaster

ATaco

If this were a remake I'd understand but they're only building upon the framework that the original team worked so hard to create and perfect. Just seems like a slap in the face to them to omit their efforts, especially since we don't even have an official way to go back and play the original. Almost as if Nintendo is content to bury their past and anyone that ever helped make them what they are today. Enjoy your time in the limelight remaster team, Nintendo will surely bury you too.

Re: Nintendo, Sony And Xbox Reportedly Skipping E3 2023

ATaco

@GrailUK Geoff does seem to want to turn into gaming's Emmys or something but I was pretty entertained with last year's show. If you only like certain types of games you might have been put off by it but saw quite a few things to be excited for and the big stage is just a lot more fun to me than the quiet and sanitized directs that Nintendo has popularized. It's just a glorified trailer showcase at that point which some people want and that's totally cool too. I'll just miss the spectacle of it all, I guess.

Re: Nintendo, Sony And Xbox Reportedly Skipping E3 2023

ATaco

They should unfortunately just retire E3 and put all the major focus on the Game Awards. Still, it's depressing to see gaming communities segregate themselves to their own little events. E3 brought the whole industry together for tons of announcements across various companies. Now we're just going to get like 30 minute directs and stuff that people will only talk about on the day of. What a shame.

Re: Poll: Do You Want Weapon Degradation To Return In Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom?

ATaco

I wouldn't mind blacksmiths existing in the world allowing you to both upgrade and repair your favorite weapons. They could even do it so that upgrading a weapon to it's final level unlocks a new aesthetic look for it, I know I always find it cool to try and see what all the weapons look like when at max level.

This way it makes it more meaningful to earn a weapon after a quest besides shrugging because it will just break after a couple uses

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Fire Emblem Engage

ATaco

Not chasing the game of thrones style storytelling doesn't appeal to western reviewers, go figure. I'm not saying that previous FE games were amazing storywise but I wouldn't say that 3H was a major breakthrough. Go back and play path of radiance (if you can) and you'll see that the story can still be great without a major western influence.

Re: Round Up: The Previews Are In For Fire Emblem Engage

ATaco

@FishyS if you can remember that swords beat axes, axes beat lances and lance's beat swords you're already well on your way to understanding fire emblem. Of course there's a lot more there than just the basics but you'll find that FE games tend to play like a game of rock paper scissors, everything is always strong against something and weak against another. While I'm not sure if this will be the best game to start with, I think it would be a better introduction to the franchise than 3H, which almost felt like it was chasing the whole "Game of Thrones" craze at the time.

Re: Best Of 2022: How Stardew Valley Grew The Farm Sim While Harvest Moon Went To Seed

ATaco

I feel Stardew is just a very competent version of the farm sim. It didn't really do anything to alter the farming formula, they just added uglier (to me) sprites to the games with modern gaming conveniences. I still played the heck out of it like I would any good SoS game...but Friends of Mineral Town really set the bar and I feel like it's a bar that SV did its very best to imitate.
