Wii Sports Officially Inducted Into The Video Game Hall Of Fame

Wii Sports ABSOLUTELY deserves a place in the hall of fame for what it did for the gaming sphere. It opened up a previously inaccessible hobby to the masses in a fun and intuitive way.

Wii Sports deserves to be there the most in my opinion.

Also, Angry Birds, really? You can't even display the actual game in the museum.

@Tourtus why not Angry Birds? It was humongous, and if we’re saying that Wii brought a lot of new gamers then mobile gaming has continued and surpassed that legacy.

Also why are they counting NBA and FIFA as a franchise rather than an individual game? Then shouldn't Wii Sports Resort/Nintendo Switch Sports be up there too?

@Breeze23 Just above MW4 is Wizardry. It is a classic RPG, one the first along with Ultima and Might and Magic.

Wii sports got my parents and family who never touch games to get in on the fun. While I felt that the Wii's lineup wasn't the greatest, nothing has ever come close to the experience of having the whole family and relatives playing Wii Sports together.

Oh yeah. Dance Dance Revolution really deserves a spot.
People don´t remember Dance Dance Revolution that much because when it came and became a worldwide trend, we didn´t have Youtube and social media services were still small and not really popular

I remember foundly the years when DDR was huge. I´d even that it was a cultural phenomenon at the time. There were competitions all around the globe and tons and tons of player communities organized in web forums, some were even international. Freestyle videos were shared extensively through videologs and/or by file-sharing websites. Sometimes, physical educators, teachers or even doctors came with research on DDR as a potential activity to exercise and help people lose weight.

In certain countries, like Norway, at some point it was even considered a sport. Championships in Europe and Asia were huge deals.

I myself met and even made some friends with people from all around my country, despite the low availability of DDR (PIU were more popular here due to its lower cost)

Fortunately, there´s still an old Supernova at a shopping mall here in my city where I can play once in a while. The "dance machine" trend has long come, but the impact it had on the game market and the creation of online gaming communities was really huge at the time.

From a historic point-of-view, DDR should be considered a essential game, just like Street Fighter 2, Super Mario Bros, Pac-Man or Tetris

I don’t see why it shouldn’t be there. But given how some of these organizations overlook Nintendo they probably have every edition of Madden and CoD there instead

I’ll admit I scoffed at the Barbie game, then a quick google search showed me that it was the first commercially successful video game aimed squarely at girls. Was even the 9th best selling PC game of ‘96. Very impressive!

I'd like to see Guitar Hero up there along with Half Life some time (unless I missed it), but definitely voting for Wii Sports on this one.

As "best of" lists go, this seems like a pretty solid one. Considering how much gaming-related media I've consumed, it's a bit odd I haven't even heard of a couple of the older games. But the rest all make sense, so I'll assume their influence justifies their position. There are still plenty of Nintendo series that deserve a spot, Metroid and Smash Bros. especially, though adding the latter to a hall of fame feels almost redundant.

Awesome. Wii Sports HAS to get in. That game encapsulated a cultural shift in the entire industry.

@Hero-of-WiiU The Strong Museum has plenty of Nintendo games, they’re company agnostic and know what’s what. If anything they over emphasize Nintendo b/c of Mario and the Game Boy. Ocarina of Time went in last year.

Wii Sports obviously deserves it but I could see them adding TLoU this year b/c of the show. Goldeneye should be there as well. And Angry Birds is practically its own universe so yes to that one as well.

Highly recommend a visit if anyone is near there. Don’t know why anybody would be but it is only about 90 minutes from Niagara Falls if you’re going there. Definitely kid friendly. They also have a small room of vintage pinball machines which was kinda cool.

Was happy to see Wizardry as a nominee, this year. I played that when I was a kid. It was released in 1981. My dad played through all the Apple ][ games. That box looks just like the one we had with the foil inlay - it was impressive at the time!

From wikipedia: "The game was one of the first Dungeons & Dragons-style role-playing games to be written for computer play, and the first such game to offer color graphics. It was also the first true party-based role-playing video game."

One absolutely had to map the dungeons square by square to succeed (no Internet back then!) Etrian Oddysey carries on its tradition, nowadays.

@aaronsullivan My kid is currently scheduled to be graduating from RIT early - 3 years for a 4 year program in May - and my other kid is thinking of starting a 5 year program there in August, which if that happens, I'll certainly be back to Strong. And the Genesee Brewery. 😉
(Hoping for Binghamton though as the RIT net cost has gone up $7k in 3 years. And that's w/ the youngest getting $3k more in scholarships and the same in grants. 🤑)

I mean, it did introduce a whole new generation (both younger and older) to video games, so I can see why it belongs in the Hall of Fame. The first knee jerk reaction is to say that Wii Sports Resort deserves the nomination, but even though that game is far superior, Wii Sports is what started it all. So I feel like this nomination is fitting.

Wii Sports is fantastic. So is Wii Sports Resort. But for me, the definitive Wii game is Super Mario Galaxy 2.

All of the choices should really be there considering the impact they had to be honest.

Well deserved where Wii Sports is concerned. It was the perfect pack-in title, ensuring that folks of all ages, gamers or not, got hooked. And while not a proper substitute for exercise, it should be commended for getting people to move.

I'm glad barbie is a nominee, after seeing that video on games for girls I think it's important.

Fun Fact: There have only been two years where a Nintendo game was NOT inducted into the Hall of Fame, those years being 2018 and 2020. At the same time, every year has had at least one inducted game from a series that is represented in the Super Smash Bros. series.

Pretty cool. Wii Sports is still one of my favorite games to play and I was happy to see Nintendo continue this line of titles on Switch, though it could use some more events to choose from.

About time I say, the game is a classic, that brought both gamers and none gamers to the table.

@aaronsullivan Etrian Odyssey (and the Persona crossover spin-offs) is an amazing series. But I'm really sad that it really does require a (3)DS to work, so I'm not sure whether its remakes on Switch will be enough to say it lives on beyond the 3DS... I hope it will convince me (and drop in price soon enough, because I played them before, 2 out of 3 of the remade games in 3 versions as they have already been remade and included 2 versions in the remake...)

Wii Sports was part of the Wii Series. The other games in the series were Wii Play, Wii Music, Wii Sports Resort, Wii Play Motion, Wii Fit, and Wii Party. Nintendo Switch Sports is not part of the Wii Series, although it serves as a spiritual successor to Wii Sports Resort, which in turn is also a spiritual successor to PilotWings (takes place in the same world).
