The latest charts from Japan are in and it's a strong showing for Capcom this week, with Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection coming out on top for the Switch, selling an impressive 52,375 units. The PS4 version, meanwhile, entered the charts at number 5, selling 7,871 units.
Elsewhere, Dokapon Kingdom Connect came in at number 10, selling 5,411 units, while the PS5 version of Resident Evil 4 has fallen out of the top 10 altogether. Interestingly, the lesser PS4 version is still maintaining a strong presence at number 7 with 7,189 units sold.
We'll also be keeping a close eye on Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe over the next few weeks, as the persistently popular platformer closes in on a total of 400,000 units sold.

Over on the hardware front, it's a solid week for both the Switch and the PlayStation 5. Sony's flagship console comes out on top with 39,799 units solid, while its Digital Edition brought in 7,241, making a total of 47,040. Meanwhile, the combined total of all Switch SKUs this week comes to 48,794, so while the PlayStation 5 made significant strides this week, it still remains a success for Nintendo. Just. Still, it's pretty good going for a 6-year-old console.
Here's the Japanese hardware charts for this week:
- PlayStation 5 – 39,799 (2,866,126)
- Switch OLED Model – 33,351 (4,214,700)
- Switch – 8,681 (19,270,032)
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – 7,241 (463,152)

- Xbox Series X – 147 (184,583)

I know it doesn’t happen every time but it is cool to see multiplats do better on switch with a simultaneous launch. I do feel bad for Nintendo’s marketing team (or whomever decided console reveals). They don’t wanna wait until sales dry up but when you have a hit it is hard to know when to introduce the new shiny.
Healthy hardware numbers from both sides (sorry XBox.) No need to fight, it's practically a draw.
If Switch 2 can release for a similar price as the og Switch, then it's going to clean house (again).
Wow when you combined PS5 sales to Switch sales, PS5 came pretty close. If Nintendo had a new console coming, they better announce it soon cause it looks like everyone is moving to next-gen in the next few months. Seems like they had enough of the low quality on Switch now. Also it's obvious why Mega Man Battle Network: Legacy Collection sell so well on Switch, the series started on portable so it'll sell better on portable.
Love to see Mega Man Battle Network sell so well especially on Switch, looking forward to getting a copy myself!
Also, nice to see Dokapon Kingdom in the top 10 even though barely!
@Serpenterror I have been a nay sayer over the last few years, but I think later this year would be lovely after Mario and Zelda (provided the price is right and they have games. Otherwise they would be comitting suicide. A new Mario game launch title would be perfect timing to be honest, this Christmas.) That said, it depends what they have planned for H2. Who knows,, maybe folk won't be that bothered about a nwe console lol.
I don’t mind switch sales starting to drop off now. Bring on the Switch 2 (aka UltraDolphin).
@Ryu_Niiyama You introduce the new shiny to have the most impact on your competitor. Sony is absolutely reeling from huge mistakes over the past 5, 10 years and it is paying off big right now - by the complete and utter disaster the PS5 is. I can only imagine the market share they are losing on a year by year basis.
What I would do: Wait a bit longer for the PS5 to get some legs - anticipate a big Sony announcement - kill them with your own announcement that same week. Bushido Code.
Doesn’t really matter if the PS5 outsells the switch these days, because the switch is both 6+ years old and it’s been sold to everyone who has wanted one worldwide (135 million+ people). PS5s are selling now because after two years of scarcity and brutal scalping, you can finally find one in a store for purchase at its base price
PS5 has no games, it's like sony isn't even trying
@valharian total lie...
these statistics are getting a little bit samey, but new data underlines PS5’s impressive rise to dominance. The console’s sales increased 369 per cent throughout the first quarter of 2023 in key European countries like France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Switzerland, and Portugal. That’s even more than the 180 per cent increase observed during the same period in the UK.
Obviously these numbers are influenced by just how supply constrained the console was 12 months ago, but Sony has set some pretty aggressive sales targets for its new-gen system, and it looks like it’s going to meet them. It’s particularly amazing when you consider that in the same European countries, both the Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch registered significant declines year-over-year. In fact, the PS5 single-handedly powered the hardware market to a 67 per cent increase.
I ordered the PS4 version of Battle Network cause I couldn’t find a Switch copy for the life of me. Looking forward to it!
"And Switch just about outsells PS5"
^ the Switch outright outsells PS5 (33351 + 8681 + 6762 > 39799 + 7241) despite having been on the market for six years now. FIFY.
With charts like this, there is no need to launch a new console. Nintendo barely makes any profit on its hardware, and Switch games continue to dominate the top ten (even though there hasn't been a major release in a long time). Only 4 of their 7 home consoles have actually been successful, and there’s still no need to lock all new Nintendo games behind a 400$ box that does the same thing as the current Switch.
2026 or later.
@Euler
Pretty sure Nintendo has been making a profit on every Switch console since day 1 so by now must be making a pretty penny on each console sold.
@johnedwin Look at the PS5 list exclusive wiki and laugh at how pitifully small it still [even includes games not even out yet with no ToD and Astro Playroom] is after all this time.
PS5 indeed does have very little games to sell you on the console to move on from a PS4 [they are still making games for it] or just having a PC release in general. People are still really only getting a PS5 just to upgrade their PS4 HW since it can play PS4 games anyway to still treat it as a glorified PS4 machine, but barely anyone grabbing the PS5 SW in Japan.
Even the RE4 Remake on this list was still a 50:50 split between PS4/PS5 sales showing ton of people still haven’t upgraded their HW let alone getting PS5 SW in Japan
PS5 won’t have any real life again until FFXVI drops and even then I’m not expecting high numbers at least in Japan for the series.
Usually 3rd party titles sells most on playstation even in japan, but now it seems japan already abandoned playstation and go all in on switch.
@SBandy1 It's not very much. They get more per game than per console. Other manufacturers sell their consoles at a loss.
@Euler
Not much money made per console is definitely better than losing money per console!
Anyway Switch is still selling brilliantly for a console in its seventh year so Nintendo are in no rush as you said.
They just better not do a Switch U type mess with its successor!
The pS5 and Switch aren't competitors. Not sure why that's still a tough concept to grasp. No one is trying to decide if they want a PS5 or Switch. They either own or intend to own a version of both, or they only care about the respective things one console does that the other doesn't.
Good sales for the Mega Man collection on Switch. Also, Splatoon 3 closing in on 4M sales in Japan alone, good to see.
@Cashews reeling from huge mistakes? They may not be selling massive numbers in Japan (though still trending ahead of the ps4/3 for the same time periods) but they are killing it in Europe and North America. Record sales and profits! And that's after a pandemic and huge semi conductor shortage.
Pretty cool to see both PlayStation 5 and all Nintendo Switch models neck and neck in sales. Both great systems in their own right. I am honestly kind of getting to the point where I am wanting the next Nintendo console to be announced so I can see what I have to look forward to.
@johnedwin It's nothing to be proud of dominating a console in it's 7th year lmao. Dominance! (Come on, it's not about that these days.)
@johnedwin I think the PS5 increase is a huge story (as you said, heavily driven by scarcity last year to abundance this year), but i think a story that should be getting more attention is how down the Xbox Series is. I haven't seen a Series X in stores in a year and a half at this point. Meanwhile, Wal-Mart regularly has PS5s in stock.
Nintendo being down isn't really a story in its 7th April.Only down 18% is actually really good for this point in its life, as others have noted.
@Arawn93 and yet the ps5 is now tracking ahead of the ps3/4 for the same time frame in Japan so can't be doing too bad. Plus since it's breaking records in North America and Europe which are now Sony's biggest markets I don't think they'll be too bothered.
And we all know why Sony has continued to support the ps4 for so long. They couldn't make enough ps5's because of a global pandemic and tech wide semiconductor shortage. Without that happening they would have dropped the ps4 a lot earlier. But if you look at the amount of games Sony have released since the ps5 launched its a much stronger lineup than most consoles get.
@Coalescence No one is saying the two platforms are direct competitors. However, by comparing a 6-year-old console to another that has, by all accounts, only recently become readily available, it gives us a good indication of how popular the Switch still is.
I'm kind of curious how popular the PC scene has become in Japan. From what I can tell most are pretty content with just owning a switch and a PC for the most part. Sony's exclusives aren't really Japan oriented nowadays so they probably don't mind too much, especially if they can just play stuff like Resi 4 on their PCs.
Wait, Dokapon Kingdom is already out ??
@Olliemar28 in what way are they not direct competitors? Because a forum poster said so? They may not be in gamers circles but I bet everything I own that a vast majority of those 135M sales are to single console owning families. I know normies who are still playing on their Wii. Not out of nostalgia but because that is their family console.
Of course they are absolute in every way direct competitors. They are in the exact same industry in the exact same country!
@Serialsid The PS5 is getting destroyed in the US/Europe in every meaningful sales chart. They are getting more console sales. Yay, you lose money on each sale. Winner. Look at RE5.In one week and out the next. Where is Gran Turismo 7? Any other evergreens? During the ps2 era Gran Tursimo was on the top list for basically 5 years.
Meanwhile the switch has 4 titles that literally never leave the top 10. You give away the razor to sell the blades. Console sales are great for long term - the money is made in software.
Who cares why Sony couldnt sell during the pandemic? You think the CEO is begging for an asterisk because sniff covid happened It is business you must be prepared for everything - and then you need luck. No one cares why you failed.
As soon as Sony hits their stride BOOM Nintendo releases another console. The killstroke is there I hope they entertain me and take it.
@valharian
I'm sorry, PS5 has a lot of games.
There are a lot of kids games on PS5 that I can get such as Kao the Kangaroo, The Smurfs Mission Vileaf, Instant Sports Plus, Time on Frog Island, Bunny Park, Lemon Cake, Spirit of the North, etc.
a year ago many people were saying the ps was dead in japan .. japanese gamers no longer play home consoles they all have been proven wrong..
Do some here really need to be number one to enjoy their gaming? I owned a Wii U for crying out loud...
@Cashews what are you on about? Sony just had their highest ever 3rd quarter revenue in their history. Failing???
They've just sold more ps5's in North America during Feb and March than any Sony console before it. First quarter in the UK up 180%, over half of all consoles sold were ps5s. Europe up 369%. What you think, people are buying all these consoles and not buying games?
78% of Sony's software sales are now digital. The ps2 charts were all physical!
GOW ragnarok 11 million in 3 months. Gt7 6-7 million, and it's still charting now, especially after the free psvr2 update.
And 3rd party games, Sony get a cut of. Hogwarts legacy, 12 million sold, in one of the first weeks 83% were ps5! First 2 weeks of res evil 4 remake sales, 65% were ps4/5, and that's against xbox And PC.
If you think Sony are failing when they plan to ship 31 Million ps5's this year, the highest in their history, then 🤷♂️! Nintendo can go BOOM all they like, still not going to stop the massive success that the ps5 has become.
Oh and I do hope Nintendo does release a brilliant switch 2 and amazing games, I'll buy it day one. Because unlike you I have no weird loyalty to a billion dollar company.
Oh and they've been selling the disc version for a profit since Aug 21.
@GrailUK
Some peoples are not really smart.
They thought being number one at sales = must play games.
By my logical sense, games labeling doesn't always equal the best games to play.
Everyone have different interest and different gaming skill.
Do we have to play games that called the best by other peoples but it doesn't look good from our perspective ?
Where did the PS5 games go?????
@Anti-Matter Kao the Kangaroo, The Smurfs Mission Vileaf, Instant Sports Plus, Time on Frog Island, Bunny Park, Lemon Cake, Spirit of the North, etc.
Those are also on the Switch already? Not sure where this is coming from. But pull the PS5 plug and the game is dead-undock the Switch and you can play til 15% shows up. So what is going on here? Did someone get miffed or something.
@SwitchForce
But those are also PS5 games even they have Switch version.
And those games are played better on PS5 than Switch after some investigations.
And that's the reason I pick those cartoon games on PS5 version for having better performance than Switch version.
PS5 still has games, from those titles also.
@GrailUK same, plus I owned a Saturn and a Dreamcast. All of them had brilliant software.
@Anti-Matter Only in Japan, in Europe and North America Dokapon Kingdom Connect is coming out on May 9.
@GrailUK Really don't get it either, I'm happy to see the Switch still selling well in particular just because it's the console I have and enjoy, but I'm happy PS5 is selling well too for those who only/also have and enjoy that!
And yeah, I got a Wii U back in the day too, sad it didn't do particularly well, but that doesn't mean I wasn't happy for those who only/also had a PS4 and/or an Xbox One!
@WiltonRoots I wish I had a Saturn and a Dreamcast, I've heard so many good things about their libraries!
@JohnnyMind Yep I dunno what it is, I do like an underdog
There's a guy on YouTube called Sega Lord X who covers both the Dreamcast and Saturn extensively (as well as the MD and Master System), he's worth checking out as they're great level headed shows without any try-hard posturing.
@WiltonRoots Thanks for the recommendation, I'll check it out when I have the time!
@JohnnyMind
I see.
Still need to wait for Dokapon Kingdom English version until May 2023.
@Cashews
Where the hell are you getting 135 million Switch sales from? It's currently at ~125 million.
And how is Sony failing in the EU and US? They're crushing it in sales. Outselling Nintendo by 2:1 and Xbox by 4:1.
Just 1-2 more weeks until Pokémon SV hits 5 million physical in Japan! Congratulations!
